This has been so helpful! I went ahead and bought Sibelius after using the free version for awhile--your video helped me finally make the decision! My question now is--I am having a really hard time with the layout when I'm creating music and writing text--like paragraphs. I see you have a document open with pictures, paragraphs and music--do you do all that in Sibelius or do you use another program? I'm trying to create a PDF document with explanations, directions, imagery and music...kind of what you have. I am so lost about where I should be operating from. 😅🎻📚 Thank you so much for any suggestions!!🙏🙏🙏

Glad you found it helpful! It’s a pain but I did all that in Sibelius! BUT I first wrote in word and copied it over. Now you mention it I might actually do a video on creating a “front page” in Sibelius

@@Joe-blogcomposer thank you so much!! That would be a great tutorial!! I just watched something about exporting the music as a graphic and then using that in word or pages...anyway, thank you so much for your reply!!! Looking forward to seeing a tutorial :)

I agree with you. For a concert piece, I’ll write solely in Sibelius with Noteperformer as a reference. If I’m going to use a DAW, I’ll write the piano sketches on a number of staves in Sibelius and then export them into Logic. Then build up and layer in Logic. Sometimes I have to use Italian instrumentation. Sibelius easily allows me to edit the instrumentation. Dorico produces weird results by adding English tags at the end of Italian nomenclature.

I was happy with Finale when I was composing in the software (v26 and v27). However, I did switch to Dorico 4, and love it even more! I think Sibelius and Pro Tools will be standard for a while. Dorico and MuseScore have potentials to really shake up what we all think of as the "industry standard notation software," especially with the younger composers. I've noticed a lot more younger composers use a mix of finale, sibelius, dorico, and musescore, where older composers are almost completely split between finale and sibelius.
    Video was great and informative!

Do you need a plug in to do that explanation/illustration on your first page (entitled Mechanical Space with a picture) of Sibelius or it come standard with the software?
And Can you do the same with other softwares?

That can all be done within Sibelius, can be a bit awkward but it is possible!

I started out on Dorico and love it, plus it doesn't have a subscription. The iPad version integrates really well too. I have a friend who uses it for arranging with NotePerformer and he can't praise it enough (he conducts at the Royal Albert Hall so know's what's what). Dorico works with Cubase pretty well as both are from Steinberg. I'm sure Sib is good too, along with Muse Score and Finale, but given the amount of time needed to learn new software, I'll be sticking with Dorico.

@@Trensharo You're right, but Steinberg own both Dorico and Cubase, so the opportunities exist to bring them *much* closer together as time goes by. Logic Pro and Sib are on different planets. (I have Logic Pro and Cubase Pro - love both of them)

You've never had Sibelius crash on you?

Dorico is better than Sibelius. I switched 3 years ago, and was the right decision.

People who are vociferous in their support of Dorico and Finale don’t necessarily love it more than Sibelius. Some of us just loathe Avid.

vociferous, great word! Why do you loathe AVID? I must admit though for my line of work (mock ups) I’m enjoying Dorico a lot more then Sibelius

@@Joe-blogcomposer I'm surprised you need to ask. How about: (a) sacking Spreadbury & co in 2012, (b) refusing to sell Sibelius back to the Finns, while doing very little to improve it, (c) introducing a subscription model which effectively priced us perpetual licence owners out of the product (I mean hobbyists, not professionals like you). Compare that with Steinberg's amazingly generous crossgrade price on Dorico Pro. Even if Dorico were not a superior product, I would refuse to give Avid another penny.

@@zorkmarble after I bought the perpetual licence during my degree I haven’t really looked into AVID until I started on UA-cam. I agree with the whole pricing issue, really don’t like the subscription model, I bought it and see no need to update it even though mines 3 years out of date. For the amount you pay updates should be free until the next big number and even then get a discount if you have the perpetual licence.
