Any time “Andrea moda” Is mentioned, you know there’s quite a story there, especially with the drivers
Roberto Moreno the specialist of extracting performance from terrible f1 cars made it on the grid in monaco but raced that race 11 laps
AFAIK Sasseti’s the only team owner who got arrested in the paddock. It was for fraud, but he’s lucky it wasn’t manslaughter given how dangerous the car was.
"Highlights": Mc Carthy had to do the training in Silverstone on wet tyres in dry conditions, because the team saved the slicks for Moreno. And in Spa, they sent him out with a damaged steering knowingly without telling him and risked his life that way.
or no story whatsoever...
❤aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa the TR 5tt😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Amazing work, but you did miss the best Senna/Berger story.
Berger retaliated to a Senna practical joke by releasing several frogs or toads into the Brazilian's hotel room late at night. Senna enraged rang his teammate to complain that he had gone too far and he'd been up for several hours trying to catch them all.
Berger's response? 'Ah but did you find the snake?'
Genius... what a legend!
Great story indeed!
I can't overstate how surprised I am every time I hear a hilarious Gerhard Berger story. He was gas! Sure didn't give off that impression. Always liked him as a driver
I think Berger's reputation as a "hilarious" practical joker depends on whether you think sub-Michael McIntyre "that thing shouldn't be in that place" humour is funny.
@@StuartGarlickTo be honest… “did you find the snake though?” is hillarious you gotta admit.
His other pranks I’ve read of… pretty mid tbh. But the main source of entertainment was probably Senna’s reaction rather than the act itself.
And after ranking videos like this i can declare your channel as one of the most super underrates in the F1 youtube world... Amazing job Peter!
It was nice to find factual F1 info without a silly title (that never gets discussed in the video). Thank you- this was excellent!
Honestly, those controversies were what made Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Mansell and others into legends they are today. Those men were true warriors: skilled, brave and determined to win. As far as I'm concerned, any one of them could've been number one and no one would be able to disagree.
That said, you did Moreno dirty. Man managed to qualify with EuroBrun, Andrea Moda and Forti. How many other drivers can say that they accomplished such a feat?
Anyway. have you ever considered doing a video like this for all the constructors from each decade? Would like to see you making fun of HRT (again), Life and similar fodder.
Moreno was kinda really underrated.
Love mansell, only one who could play senna at his own game, he ragged the hell out of every car he was in for good or bad
I can't stand Mansell but you're dead right. Took it right to Senna.
@@RobJaskula mansell was an amazing driver. He got into f1 without help from money from his parents, he had to fight for every drive he got. Brilliant talent, brilliant driver, brilliant person, and he is the only british driver to win an f1 title and then move to indycar and win it in his rookie season. I loved watching him drive, and he was a great advertisement for the sport
Jeez, three hours? this must have taken forever to put together. Massive respect 👍
as a Brazilian all you said about Senna is pretty right. Even Decades after, He still a legend in Brazil in a even more intense way. Thank You.
And what a Awesome work You did! Congratulations for such a complete vídeo, i've never seen a footage like that on UA-cam. Such a complete job.
Watched this in one go last night - really enojyed it. The level of research that must have gone into this is immense. Really well done, Peter. Great work
Interesting fact: the andrea moda chassis was one of the better chassis on the grid so the car handled very well, it was just that every other component of everything else was holding it back, to say it lightly
Was a simtek prototype
@MatuteSantiago 465 Well it was a Simtek project for BMW that was supposed to participate in the 1991 season but was abandoned. There was another team that used the same design but I can't remember who.
@@PEPSIMaxMusic Bravo F1, which was supposed to start in 1993.
It prompted Worth to start Simtek outright and in 1995 they were threatening to really go places.
Zanardi a complete legend , not just for his racing, but for his fotrtitude!
As a newbie to the sport, this is some of my favorite F1 content on UA-cam. But if I could offer some constructive criticism, you state the driver's name once at the start, but then often only use "he" afterwards and I sometimes forget who's being talked about. Could you show the name/position on screen, or use their name more often? Thanks for the videos!
100% agree about the need to add the driver's first or last name somewhere at the end of the individual narrative. I've been watching this video while in the Garage, mod distracted, and then had to rewind, thinking, "Which driver is this again?"
Great video! Also Senna not only excelled in qualifying and wet races but also street circuits! A Legend indeed.
Another great video 👍🏻 Sadly I missed most of the 90s, my first year was 1999. My first formula 1 memory is Schumachers crash in Silverstone
Mansell!!! Balls of steel, no nonsense, British coolness and a big moustache. A sort of non alcoholic James Hunt, which is also one of my top hero's in F1. Puke the alcohol out of your system of the party last night, jump in a F1 car and win the race. A bloody fast partyboy that didn't give a damn about money but only the thrill and the adrenaline of going fast.
Schumacher rear-ending Coulthard in Spa '98 is a very interresting way of viewing things
He's British it's just the way they are
That's why coulthard was nothing more than a number 2 driver for his career.
@@MooncricketsInc Coulthard massively overrated here. Never rated him
Always a good day when Peter uploads
The no wins, no fastest laps, no podiums, no points became too funny after a while
No. 43 Martin Donnelly received more than twisted ankle when his car broke up at 180mph, mika hakkinen got his opportunity when Martin's injuries ended his career.
Wendlinger was on his way up, performing well and was on the candidate list of top teams. But after his life threatening crash in Monaco, he could not overcome his fear in an open wheeler anymore and had physical problems, too.
But later on, he was successful in the GT championship.
Ranking every F1 driver in the 1980s please
Yeah, wanna see one too, but it'll be even longer than this one lol
I was at college and met perry and say “that he world the drivers tiles” along side Schumacher. Great guy and great book a must read
Book is ok. Bit pitiful and pathetic really.
@@DexDrives Pathetic and pityful? It’s written with humor and self-distance. Perry is’nt complaining about him not having an F1-career. The only time he’s kind of complaining is about the Andrea Moda-team sending him out in dry conditions with wet weather tyres. Or when they send him out with a flexing steering rack at Spa. And hey; who wouldn’t?
The book is a great read and Perry comes through as a top bloke with a large chunk of self-distance and a great sense of humor.
I recently have read the book of Perry McCarthy myself and i can confirm it is a great book about how perseverance, determination and improvisation can be rewarded in the long term.
I disagree with ranking Senna above Schumacher for the 90s, although I do understand why he is ranked 1st. Great video!
Yes I totally agree.
Nobody should be above supersub Roberto Moreno imho. The man literally was the Solskjaer of formula one😅
I'd argue that, if we look at the numbers, Senna won 31% of his races to Schumacher's 27% and even though he had half the amount of races, he got more poles. That's crazy when you think about it. And even when the numbers are close, all the stories that made Senna an iconic figure end up as tie-breakers in his favor.
@@gabrielsena704 Plus the fact that Senna obvoiusly only drove for 4 seasons in the 90s, and died at the prime of his life and career. Imagine if Hill could give Schumacher a very competitive fight, imagine what Senna would´ve done instead.
I love the dry joke about Jacques having the big boots to fill of his uncle 😂
Got goosebumps around Zanardi's story....already know all of it, that man is still a legend to me. I started following F1 in '99 by the way. To bad the paralympics weren't mentioned about him.
Fun fact: if Irvine finished higher in Europe, he would've set the record for most consecutive points finishes in one season
Funny to see Mika Salo, my relatively near some-time neighbor here in Tallinn, so low down the list, for 90s alone, I remember him being more prominent than that - but the figures do not lie.
Mika Salo bottled it when the going got tough. Yes, Hockenheim was impressive but that track fell into Ferrari's lap in 1999
Two legendary f1 drivers who prank each other, not for pr or support, just for shit’s and giggles.
Yayyyy. The greatest of all time to feature on this. The great Taki Inoue!
After watching a 3 hour video about 90s F1 all I want is a cigarette.
I did some racing driver lessons back in the 90s and met Andrea Chiesa. He spoke about the car he drove where he hardly fit in standing on his other feet as it was too short for him. He said he never took more risk than in this car and still he remembered his head pushed beside when one of the top cars just smashed by on the straights.
Thank you. As a 50y/o and life long F1 fan, I really do appreciate your work!
Thank you for this overview video. Started watching F1 in 1992. So many memories...
Fabulous video. I especially love seeing all the photos you've collected for each driver. Equal parts calming and captivating. Thank you.
Super cool of you to put this together!!!! Some serious history/info within this huge list. Your narration stating all of the drivers and all the corresponding history is excellent. Thank you for all of your hard work and it's much appreciated! Keep up the awesome content.
This was fantastic, I was only going to what for a few minutes but what the whole lot in one go. A lot of very good work went into this. One of the best informative shows on F1 I have seen. Thank you.
"Plotted around as if 2 snails pushing 3 snails." Best. Metaphor. Ever.
Jan Magnussen had a ton of potential, shame it never clicked for him in F1. Always sad to hear Ukyo Katayama had health issues. Many people sneered about him being a mobile chicane but there was a reason he was always hired.
Always interested in the stories of the guys at the back. Grew up with Minardi and Rial as my favourite teams. Great content.
Katayama was pretty good in 1994.
@@SharDarksoulThat car was really good though. One of those cars that were incredibly good aerodynamically. An Alesi type level driver in that would've put it on podiums at some races. It was like the 1990 car in chassis level again the competition. Ken Tyrrell was very annoyed that year in how wasted that car was.
I saw Ukyo race a few times live in that Tyrrell Yamaha. Great sounding car. Great livery. It was Kenny's last ditch effort. I loved Uncle Ken.
I attended over 50 GP in through the 80s and 90s. Such a great time. I never went back to an F1 race once they went to Hybrid. Noise and smell was the rush.
I was at the Canadian GP in 1995. I was sitting 3rd on the grid, front row. Alesi was right in front of me. It was his birthday. I started singing Happy Birthday and the crowd all joined in. He tossed his gloves over the fence to me.
The Ferrari 412 T2 was probably the best engine I ever heard in F1. Montreal just bought new metal grandstands. You could literally feel that Ferrari coming up the straight via your A..hole.
I've been playing these driver ranking videos over and over, and I can sincerely say, I can't disagree. These are the most accurate driver rankings ever. This kid has more knowledge about F1 than most Sky sports commentators.
1:59:27 Poor Barichello "As this continued for the rest of his career" lol
Too low position for Rubens, he was much Better than Alesi for example.
He was rated 11th as fastest driver ever.
This guy is not very Smart.
@@SuperDavidGnomo Let me guess: you are from Brazil(?)
@@SuperDavidGnomo way better than Coulthard
People should really see this video before saying “Schumacher only had weak teammates”
Barrichello never lost to a teammate in his career before Ferrari…
At 2:14, the narrator says something funny: "Jacques Villeneuve Jr. had big boots to fill as the nephew of Jacques Villeneuve Sr.". No mention of that fact that Jacques Jr. is the son of F1 Legend Gilles Villeneuve. Just a passing reference that he is the nephew of Jacques Villeneuve Sr. Jacques Sr. is a bit of a Legend in Québec due to his daredevil snowmobile racing. However, he has always been in the shadow of his older brother Gilles that held a seat at Ferrari for several years prior to passing in an accident at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.
Indeed, that's the joke.
Uncle Jacques had a win in Indy car too!
Brilliant video and a great knowledge of the 90s drivers!!
Nice vid man! Loving the longer ones 😅
Another amazing masterpiece the video's are getting better snd better every time
Great piece of work. Well done 👍🏻👍🏻
BIG and great work, mate. Congratulations!!!!
Hakkinen and Schumacher were in the completely different league than others (if you consider Prost, Senna and Mansell as mainly 80's drivers). Hakkinen had a competitive and reliable car only for three years. He took 2 WDC's and 26 pole positions from that.
Jacques was that level of driver but totally fucked his career with the move to BAR. You're right that Mika and Schumacher are a clear top two
The difficulty is that Mansell, Senna and Prost overlapped 80’s and early 90’s. So it is hard to rank.
If it was ranking mid 80’s to early 90’s - you got Senna, Prost and Mansell. In that order.
@@wiscious Mansell got beaten by Elio De Angelis at Lotus 5 years in a row. Mansell got beaten by Keke Rosberg at Williams 1985. Keke was light years faster and both Mansell's wins in 1985 came from Keke's misfortunes. Mansell had the best car in 1986 and 1987 and couldn't beat injured Piquet in 1987. Then Prost demolished him at Ferrari 1990.
Mansell was fast and talented but as an overall racing driver he shouldn't be discussed in the same sentence with Prost and Senna. Very error prone guy. The only teammate Mansell really ever beat was Patrese and in 1992 Patrese couldn't get along with the active suspension car. It was much closer before that. Mansell needed a superior car to win the title.
But I agree that Hakkinen/Schumacher era was way less competitive than the 80's.
@@detonator2112 respectfully I disagree with you. Mansell got to F1 because Colin Chapman liked his driving and suffering with a broken back (F3 crash with Elio) Colin picked him to race for Lotus and was Test Driver while Elio got the second seat at Lotus.
In a Silverstone test, he held the Lotus Teams lap record. Beating Elio, Andretti, Reutemann, etc.
He wasn’t slow, just less experienced than Elio - eventually he was able to get faster and by the mid 80’s he was a match for anyone and in 86 he had the title stolen by bad luck.
But original point. Mansell was in the same ballpark as Prost and Senna, what he lacked in pure talent he made up for with his determination and ability to drive the balls off a car. He was absolutely mental and had a heart of a lion. He was aggressive and was brilliant to watch.
@@wiscious Definitely great to watch. And mental too. But way overglorified by the UK F1 press. And Murray Walker too.
But I respectfully disagree. He was not at Senna / Prost level. In one lap occasionally, sure... but not even close as a complete driver.
80's rankings: Senna, Prost in the league of their own. Piquet, Rosberg in the second basket. You might think Rosberg's reputation was hampered because of 1986 McLaren year where he couldn't drive the understeery car. Long story but that guy won WDC with a 200 hp underpowered car and 4 1st place DNF's in 1985 alone. He was crazy fast in his prime. Monaco 1983 and Dallas 1984 win with that pig of a car were amazing and Mansell was no match to him 1985. Stupid move to leave Williams when the car was just getting good.
Mansell, Berger, De Angelis in my opinion in the third basket.
All great drivers though. Cheers.
Was going to catch up on other series, but put this right at the top when I saw it in the algorithm. Well done!
Woah! I sat through the whole thing. Well done, very informative and nice pictures to match.
Just found this channel and I love it! Great work Peter and best of luck for the future!
Love this channel!! Always solid content.
Very informative and well-researched video. Thanks!
Many thanks for this video. Hearing the names of all those long-forgotten back markers made me smile with every mention. And congratulations on your research on pronouncing the drivers' names correctly, at times you did better than Murray Walker ever managed!
Andrea Montermini was my guy
Slowly moved from "Who?" to "Oh yeah, I remember him." to "Not sure I agree." finishing with "Well that's just plain wrong!" Perfect F1 video. (I jest, hell of a job.)
Great video. Couple of small notes, Damon being "joined by his replacement" doesn't make sense, and I think Jacques' Dad's shoes were perhaps bigger to fill than his uncle's.
The replacement line was he was joined by his WILLIAMS replacement.
But fully 100% agree on JV.
Respect. That was interesting. So many information about all the drivers I have seen
You are incredible, Extremely underrated!
I salute you for this production
You nailed the order of the drivers, I held my breath after mika at no3 :) (prost 80s, senna 90s, schumi 00s)
2:18:31 the FW14B started with active suspension yes and traction control (not allowed by Renault), but abs and launch control were introduced late in the year
Missed you Peter great video
Haven't yet gone to scroll through your videos yet, but this one alone is worth hitting the sub button. The amount of research and work that had to have went into this 🤯 👍
Great stuff. Tremendous. Superb. Thank you. 🤙🤙
Absolutely superb. This bud was so good it actually made me a bit late for work today!! So much work gone into this bud and as a lifelong F1 fan I enjoyed it tremendously. Bravo!!
I meant vid, not “bud”!
A sensible F1 channel, thankyou
I subscribed
Very nice. Waiting for the cars next:)
Fantastic video. Great narration. I agree with the Top 10. Although Eddie Irvine at 14 in your list should be about more like 22
Great video. You forgot to mention that in addition to winning Le Mans, Jan Lammers went on to win the 24 hours of Daytona (twice) as well as the FIA Sportscarchampionship in 2002 and 2003
Giggity! 😂 This is perfect for someone like me who remembers a lot of pointless drivers! One of them was totally new to me though. Superb video as usual.
Incredible documentary ❤️💪
PB, thanks so much for the video, brought back tons of good memories! I'm a HHF fan, so it was great seeing his career recounted again
I'm a big HHF fan too, his appearance on the F1 podcast was such a delightful surprise! He's been coming out of his shell on social media too
I've been waiting for this!
I‘m seriously think that Diniz was one of the most underrated drivers in the 90‘ even M. Schumacher said ones, that it was interesting to study the driving style, and the line that Diniz choose on track
Excellent video. Sarazzin “spun off” was actually a massive shunt
Awesome video!
incredible video
That’s one hell of an alternative ending to Rubens’ career.
i love how we can sense the despise he has for jos verstappen and ralf schumacher 💀💀
Ralf just always seemed to leave a slight distaste in the mouth. Zero charisma.
Nice work, as a child of 90's, this wakes up some memories... MIKA!! MIKA!!! OI!!! MAHTAVAA!
Respect for your effort, good work!
I am one of the few weirdos who see 90's Schumacher better than 90's Senna mainly because of his audacity to join Ferrari knowing that it would take a few years to become competitive.
Very few drivers would have dared such a move.
with all due respect I highly disagree
Damon Hill feels a bit low. On 90s performance alone, he feels on a par with/above Mansell (1 title, 2 2nd places, over 20 wins, almost winning in the Arrows, Jordan first win)
Very sharp decline though. Majority of his 1998 was average, the Spa win flatters his season. Whilst for 1999 the less said, the better. IMO Mansell and Villeneuve had bigger impacts on F1 in the 1990's, JV pushed Hill to the brink as a rookie to start with. I suppose it depends on how you look at these things. On statistics alone Hill should be higher, more wins than Hakkinen. But is it that simple?
@@rupertpupkin9630 that 1999 Jordan was wasted on hill. I'd never liked him and his terrible attitude that year wasted Eddie's best ever car. I love HHF but you have to think Hill might have been an even bigger championship contender.
@@rupertpupkin9630
“Sharp decline” he was 38 in 1998, and honestly unlucky to be forced out of Williams after winning the title
90s politics was another level man, everyone hated everyone
@@RobJaskula
Imagine if Jacques Villeneuve was in the 99 Jordan 🔥
Mansell was miles better than Hill. Mansell is one of the all time legends.
Amazing video sir! You've gained a new sub that's for sure! That little joke you put in on #69 had me laughing my ass off as well. Keep up the smoking hot videos! Dinner's in the Oven...🤣🤣
The 90s being my loves area for f1, it was the best era. 👌
Should've of seen my face after you mentioned that that fact about Gary Brabham
OH MY GOD IT GOT WORSE
At minute 22:27 you are wrong. Toshio Suzuki and Toyota hadn't won the 1999 Le Mans 24 hours. They got the 2nd place behind the BMW of Winkelhock, Martini and Dalmas.
MAGIC MANSELL my love of F1 was all down to Mansell and Red 5 . A true out and out Racing Driver
Me too. Grew up loving watching Mansell. “Mansell Charge” always gave me goose bumps - even to this day.
Shame he has a bit of a ‘victim’ mentality. But to be fair, he worked hard for his career and he was fearlessly brilliant.
The 96 season showed the difference between a world class driver and great drivers.. the benetton would have won the title in shumachers hands..
Woah, what a video! So much substance and knowledge. Sub without questions.
What an awesome video, the details and stats. Gonna watch this fully in bed tonight... sorry for finding this a bit late :)
Schumacher nº1. He absolutely owned 90s F1. Saying he had the fastest car in 94 is simply morónic, it was an outstanding performance by Michael fighting for a championship with a car that shouldn´t be on that. The same goes with saying that the 94 year was close by his fault, when it literally was the FIA artificially manipulating the season to give a chance to Hill.
I do think the Benetton was the best car that season (and that they, and several other teams were cheating - no big deal, truly) but it was Michael's early masterpiece. Driver and car were both excellent and deserved the World Championship.
@@RobJaskula It wasn´t. Not even in 95, but the change to Renault´s V10 was surely a good push
@@Don_Ramiro maybe I'm misremembering, then. Truly I didn't watch much F1 for years after Imola 94.
@@RobJaskulaThe Benetton was definitely better handling car at the beginning of the season
Very good video, top effort to put something together lasting ~3h!! Just one thing - your first-corner crash picture for Marco Apicella is from the 1994 race, not the '93 race he competed in.
Some of the quotes that can be pulled from this are bloody hilarious
great video, what a banger. This bit in particular made me lol. "...retired from racing, entered the family businerss & is now a billionaire". If you ask me not a bad fallback LOL
I mean, he only went racing because he was a pasta heir: Barilla was born a millionaire.
@@ChristianGiaconiBonaguro
Just learned he’s THAT Barilla
Just seen your ranking video Peter and totally agree with your top ten and Senna at No.1. I was devastated when he died and my passion for F1 dwindled accordingly. To me he was a winner with passion, determination and above all charismatic. I have not seen a driver since with those qualities. I’ve now subscribed and thank you for the research involved in producing this video. 😇🙏🏿
Garry Brabham was the middle, not eldest son of Jack Brabham. Geoff, Gary, David, in that order!
He's the paedophile son.
I really like this video, which is so well researched, and unlike lots of other creators, you seem to have spent some time checking the pronunciation of driver names. I think, though, that if you could get a pop filter for your miocrophone, it would help a lot - that or running the sound file through Audacity or GarageBand before uploading. That said, again, a great video.
This is exactly what I like in a ranking video
Many thanks, Ben!
Mauricio Gugelmin has 1 podium which he scored at the 1989 Brazilian GP
Stefano Modena was Brabham's teammate at Brabham in 1990
De Cesaris scored 5 podiums
1989 wasn't in the 90's.
very underrated channel
Early 90's was like the early days, playboy heaven
Alonso at Mclaren be like: “no wins, no polls, no podiums, no points”
Adelaide 94 is a sliding doors moment. If Hill has stayed behind Schumacher when he hit the wall then that season would be remembered as an all-time choke by Schumacher…
