Regarding "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the mainland to the Isle of Anglesey where Ren and Joe lived. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs. "How to Be Me," "Freckled Angels," "Su!cIde," and his latest release, “To Joe,” are specifically dedicated to Joe. Some people have claimed that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, that is misinformation according to some residents in the area. Ren recently posted some background on his relationship with Joe and the tragic suicide. Ren explained that he got a call from his friend Ella around 3 am saying that Joe was on the Menai Bridge, He’d been on the phone with her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. Ren went out on foot attempting to get to Joe while trying to reach him on the phone. Just minutes before Ren got to the bridge, his friend's cell phone went out of service. The Coast Guard started a search to no avail. The lyrics in this song are so beautiful. I'm asking myself and I don't have an answer: among all of my favorite duets I've ever heard, I can't think of another 2 songs by the same duet as beautiful and powerful as Chalk Outlines and How To Be Me. I'm sure that you know there are actual psychologists doing reviews of Ren's work for UA-cam and I wanted to share a though from one that I think really resonates with me. While reviewing this song, he said that certain events impact us so deeply and profoundly that we are not the same person afterwards, as we were before that event happened. We can't go back and be who we were before that event, that version of us is gone now. It blows my mind how wise Ren is, for someone who is 33 years old. I'm an old man, and I've know many, many people much older than he is who aren't as self-aware as Ren is. I'm sure that much of his emotional maturity comes from dealing with his physical and mental health, and the years, literally years, of isolation that his health imposed on him. In his song "Blind Eyed" Ren's lyrics say: "I've learnt so many lessons from depression But in essence I'm just wishing that these bad thoughts were gone." It's difficult to think about what Ren has gone through. There are songs Ren wrote before he got really sick, and the talent and musicality are evident in those, but I'm convinced that Ren wouldn't be the artist he is today if his medical history was different, or if he hadn't lost Joe so horribly. One of my favorite lines of all the Ren songs that I know so far are these from Blind Eyed: "But I rhyme 'cause when I rhyme it's like my rhymes they set me free And I shine so bright, I shine those times these rhymes come out of me. Enjoying your reactions. Before Ren's band The Big Push, he had a band called "Trick the Fox" on their YT channel there's Ren material from 11+ years ago. Add some of those videos into the mix for a really deep dive. Everythings good, I like "Living Room Poetry", "The Mash Up", "Run Away". But honestly there are no bad choices.

Exactly. Ren wants his music to be interpreted by each individual in their own way. He will not say what any of it means. It means what it means to you. That being said, do not miss the musicianship the fun of The Big Push - busking and videos. "War Pigs" juxtaposed with "Praise You" (Fatboy Slim cover) would be a great place to start

Agree that There are layers to this that can have more than one specific meaning. Ren is good at doing that. But primarily, I've always felt this song was about Ren dealing with his illness, and losing his friend. The "talking to the dead" may be conversations with Joe in his mind after he was gone. The last verse definitely directly about Joe IMO. Really enjoying your channel.
To me the whole thing is about the anguish of loss. His kingdom was his (Ren's) life. His riches, his friendships. His Midas touch, his ability to see joy. The halls are his mind, bruised walls his emotional damage, bodies in the floor are memories and thoughts he wishes he could suppress, but can't. Lots of spiritual references, that culminate in him begging God for help to make it through.
I always wondered whose perspective was being given in the main part of the song - was it about Ren's grief, anguish and despair after the loss of Joe? Or was it Ren trying to put himself in Joe's mind, describing Joe's thoughts that led him to that bridge that night? Then someone suggested that it is actually *both* - and that's how I see it now, it's equally applicable. The last section is clearly Ren talking directly about Joe. By the way, if anyone suggests that it was recorded on the same bridge - it wasn't. It looks like a roof terrace or a balcony if you look carefully. And it definitely looks nothing like the Menai Straits Bridge. Their harmonies and synchronisation are sensational in this, they really are perfect together. Even on the staccato parts - 'And it su-fu-cates me' - they hit the syllables perfectly in time with each other. You said something about Ren dropping a bomb into your soul, especially with the line 'I forgot how to be me'. That's the perfect description for how he can affect us. Lovely reaction, Roni. That's really interesting, I'd never considered it being from the perspective of Joe, or the considerations of someone wanting unaliving. I think you might be right about it being both. Another reactioner i saw recently mentioned how the haunting effect they hum a couple times in the song kind of sounds like they're saying "who", and I think that lends a lot of credit to your theory as well. My Nf friend! Ooohh.... this one hits me every time ma’am!! The wreck took my identity away in so many forms, lost job, lost house, separated from family, stuck in a bed. No longer the provider or the man of the house that has the answers when there’s no house left. My point is this..... Ren and Chinchilla are my favorite lyrical duo. Ren called Chinchilla his 'sister from another mister' on a live stream and he commented that she is his lyrical sibling. Their voices together (and separately) are just so powerful and never without a thought provoking message. They are wonderful artists and I am so happy to see them rising. The Big Push has a song called "Sweet Little Lady" that I really think you'll like. It's a light hearted Rock jam with a little bit of Cajun/Creole sprinkled in. Comes in two versions, Studio and live one-take, both are bangers, and both videos are fun, so it really doesn't matter which one you pick. I know Ren has quite a few heavy songs, so I thought you could throw this in the middle somewhere.
Those who mourn forget how to be themselves without the dearly departed once you've been a spouse, a father, a mother, a brother, sister... what are you without that spouse, that sibling that child? you forget how to be you. Without Joe he forgot to how to be himself Joe was like a brother since they were children but Joe had a bad break up with his girlfriend he went to a bridge and jumped into the sea. After that Ren has often thought without you my brother "i forgot how to be me".
I can see how one can forget one self due to grief and loss. There's probably a reason why it's called "Loss". It's not only a person's energy that is gone. It's a part of you that is lost.

The voices being heard and spoken to are those of lost loved ones. And without them, possibly our saviours, we forget how to be ourselves, because we are no longer whole, as we've lost a part of ourselves. For Ren that's Joe. But the beauty of Ren's writing makes it about anyone😢.

Context is important right, the setting, where you were when you first heard a song.Im revisiting this one, from the first few bars - both unsure of the right pitch, Rens voice is oscillating a bit and its jarring,(i got a good ear for pitch, you have to, if your a guitar player, you have to be able to play with other instruments) - anyway to cut a long story short- it starts of pretty badly for a pair of now ,pro singers - they redeem it a bit later, -hate her Nails anyway , a statement is Ok, but are they meant to be lethal weapons wrapped in Angst.? I really want you to do well at this. You are obviously intelligent, self-deprecating (we Brits appreciate that - it's our kinda humour) and very appealing - but PLEASE stop with the closed captions. It distracts you AND your audience, and more often than not they are poorly timed, inaccurate and woeful in quality - and surely unnecessary for an English (ok, American 'English') speaking person? Agree that There are layers to this that can have more than one specific meaning. Ren is good at doing that. But primarily, I've always felt this song was about Ren dealing with his illness, and losing his friend. The "talking to the dead" may be conversations with Joe in his mind after he was gone. The last verse definitely directly about Joe IMO. Really enjoying your channel.

To me the whole thing is about the anguish of loss. His kingdom was his (Ren's) life. His riches, his friendships. His Midas touch, his ability to see joy. The halls are his mind, bruised walls his emotional damage, bodies in the floor are memories and thoughts he wishes he could suppress, but can't. Lots of spiritual references, that culminate in him begging God for help to make it through.
I always wondered whose perspective was being given in the main part of the song - was it about Ren's grief, anguish and despair after the loss of Joe?
Or was it Ren trying to put himself in Joe's mind, describing Joe's thoughts that led him to that bridge that night?
Then someone suggested that it is actually *both* - and that's how I see it now, it's equally applicable. The last section is clearly Ren talking directly about Joe.
By the way, if anyone suggests that it was recorded on the same bridge - it wasn't.
It looks like a roof terrace or a balcony if you look carefully. And it definitely looks nothing like the Menai Straits Bridge.
Their harmonies and synchronisation are sensational in this, they really are perfect together.
Even on the staccato parts - 'And it su-fu-cates me' - they hit the syllables perfectly in time with each other.
You said something about Ren dropping a bomb into your soul, especially with the line 'I forgot how to be me'.
That's the perfect description for how he can affect us.

That's really interesting, I'd never considered it being from the perspective of Joe, or the considerations of someone wanting unaliving. I think you might be right about it being both. Another reactioner i saw recently mentioned how the haunting effect they hum a couple times in the song kind of sounds like they're saying "who", and I think that lends a lot of credit to your theory as well. Fascinating.

It was clear to me that the last verse was about Joe. I was just not sure if the rest of the song was about himself, or the POV of Joe. Either way, it was beautiful to watch.
This song ends with the heart wrenching dedication to Ren's close friend Joe Hughes who jumped from a bridge. His body was never found and it still haunts him. His newer songs is even more about it. It was recorded from a bridge similar to the one Joe leapt from..

My Nf friend! Ooohh.... this one hits me every time ma’am!! The wreck took my identity away in so many forms, lost job, lost house, separated from family, stuck in a bed. No longer the provider or the man of the house that has the answers when there’s no house left. My point is this..... I believe I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be for a reason ma’am, and I just have to let go and understand why. Ren and Chinchilla are my favorite lyrical duo. Ren called Chinchilla his 'sister from another mister' on a live stream and he commented that she is his lyrical sibling. Their voices together (and separately) are just so powerful and never without a thought provoking message. They are wonderful artists and I am so happy to see them rising. The Big Push has a song called "Sweet Little Lady" that I really think you'll like. It's a light hearted Rock jam with a little bit of Cajun/Creole sprinkled in. Comes in two versions, Studio and live one-take, both are bangers, and both videos are fun, so it really doesn't matter which one you pick. I know Ren has quite a few heavy songs, so I thought you could throw this in the middle somewhere.

Without Joe he forgot to how to be himself Joe was like a brother since they were children but Joe had a bad break up with his girlfriend he went to a bridge and jumped into the sea. After that Ren has often thought without you my brother "i forgot how to be me".
I can see how one can forget one self due to grief and loss. There's probably a reason why it's called "Loss". It's not only a person's energy that is gone. It's a part of you that is lost.

The voices being heard and spoken to are those of lost loved ones. And without them, possibly our saviours, we forget how to be ourselves, because we are no longer whole, as we've lost a part of ourselves.

Context is important right, the setting, where you were when you first heard a song.Im revisiting this one, from the first few bars - both unsure of the right pitch, Rens voice is oscillating a bit and its jarring,(i got a good ear for pitch, you have to, if your a guitar player, you have to be able to play with other instruments) - anyway to cut a long story short- it starts of pretty badly for a pair of now ,pro singers - they redeem it a bit later, -hate her Nails anyway , a statement is Ok, but are they meant to be lethal weapons wrapped in Angst.?
