The man, the legend. Ronnie James Dio. Such a vocal talent. Before forming his own band, he was in Black Sabbath(after Ozzy Ozbourne left them), and before that, he was in Rainbow in the mid 1970's. Unfortunately, he lost his fight with cancer in 2010, but he could still sing, up until the end. More Dio songs: Last in Line, Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, for starters. Heaven and Hell, from his time with Black Sabbath.
Not only was Dio one of the best metal vocalists ever, but his voice never seemed to age... It just got better, and live in concert sounded just as good, if not better than the stuDIO stuff! Great choice and great reaction.
Can confirm (not that I need to since there's a glorious amount of video out there but I digress...) as I saw him in either 07 or 08 with Heaven and Hell (AKA Black Sabbath 2.0) and he was unreal. Had that arena in the palm of his hand the whole show.
Dio is considered one of the metal vocal gods. This is one if my favorites of his, but it really didn't stretch his talents any. I think it has that classic 80s feel because everyone wanted to be like Dio.
I recommend listening to the album made in Dio's honor, it's "Ronnie James Dio: This is your life" a whole lot of bands and artists collaborated to make it, including Metallica, Killswitch engage, Motorhead, Corey Taylor, hell even Jack Black pitched in. It's a fantastic listen and a worthy tribute to one of the most influential musicians in metal
I was in High School in the 80's when I first heard this, loved it, I was OBSESSED with this Album, I remember listening to it from the first song to the last without stopping, many times over.
You can hear Dio in early Rainbow, Black Sabbath after Ozzy left the band, and in his own band Dio. 'Stargazer' from Rainbow is a classic. 'Mob Rules' off the second Black Sabbath album with Dio is killer. For something a little different, 'The Last in Line' off Dio's second album as a solo act is wonderful. Another suggestion. You have reacted to several Metallica songs. Will you react to some Megadeth some time soon? Some classic 80's Megadeth would be great. 'Wake Up Dead' or 'My Last Words'. 'Wake Up Dead' only has a dozen or so lines of lyrics, but the song has like a dozen different riffs and some kill cool soloing. 'My Last Words', off the same album, is a song which rocks with one of Dave Mustaine's best solos.
I was 11 when this came out and didn't know who Dio was. My best friend Roberto, his older uncle Freddie was visiting from Texas. One night we were all 3 in my backyard listening to music. Freddie put this cassette in the boom box and, as the music started, proceeded to roll the biggest joint I've ever seen to this day. Roberto and I did not partake and it was truly impressive how fast Freddie smoked that whole thing by himself, but I loved Dio's voice and that album so much I think we listened to it 4x before changing to something else. There are a couple other debut albums that are as good, but none better. To me, Dio is the best male singer of all time. He's the 2nd best overall. Only Doro Pesch, the Metal Queen, is better and I've always thought of her as the female Dio.
my favorite songs by dio are last in line and stargazer by rainbow. both of these songs have incredible vocal performances by dio. the best one is probably stargazer
Ronnie James Dio (vocals) born Ronald James Padavona... formed Dio (the band) after stints as the singer of Black Sabbath... and Rainbow... He was an iconic hard rock/ heavy metal singer before 'Holy Diver' became a hit in 1983 from Dio's debut album (also titled 'Holy Diver') ... Sadly, he passed away in 2010 from cancer at the age of 67. Ronnie James Dio had to be great for to catch the attention of Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and form the band Rainbow... and then, hired to replace Ozzy Osbourne was the singer of Black Sabbath in 1980. Despite Dio being recognized as an iconic heavy metal band from the 80's... Ronnie James Dio started singing in the late 50's in his teen years and then spent the 60's performing do wop/ R&B tunes in outfits like Ronnie Dio & The Prophets... Some of those recordings can be heard on YT... He became a rock n' roll singer in 1967 singing for the band The Electric Elves... and they became known as the band Elf in the 70's. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore hired Ronnie Dio and members of Elf to record the 1975 debut album "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" ... Ronnie Dio was fired from Rainbow in 1979... Ronnie Dio joined Black Sabbath after replacing original singer Ozzy Osbourne in 1980 and brough Sabbath back to prominence... Differences led him to leave the band and formed the Dio band... Their first album 'Holy Diver' was a hit... 2nd album 'The last in line' in 1984 was a platinum+ hit.
I saw him with Rainbow more moons ago than l want to admit. What was amazing was the sound and power that came out of this small guy was unbelievable. He did own the stage.
Dio began his musical journey, playing the trumpet. His 1st metal band was ELF, with Ritchie Blackmore, & then with him in RAINBOW. Then in 1980, BLACK SABBATH, & then Dio. Ectra. His hand jesters came from his grandmother. Called the Moloik. Warding off the evil eye. Also giving the evil eye.
Ronnie James Dio was the best vocalist ever, not only with his own band Dio, but his work with both Rainbow and Black Sabbath is phenomenal. Well worth checking out. If this was your first ever exposure to RJD, then you’re in for a real treat as you delve deeper into that illustrious back catalogue.
@@simplyhuman3982 One of the best, for sure. That title of 'the best' can change often throughout the day, however.. depending on what style of vocals one wants to hear. Also, since opinions are subjective.. the 'best' may vary from one person's perspective to another person's perspective. For me.. the best includes Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickenson, Rob Halford, and King Diamond.
Man, when I was a kid (like 10-11) my parents would take us to some of their work friends house, and one time I SPECIFICALLY remember music like this (maybe not the exact track) being played down in the basement and the kids of these friends (older than me, so I was SO excited/impressionable) sitting around a table playing D&D - of which I had no idea of at the time - eating pizza and laughing. Such a clear and distinct memory that I've always cherished. This song is a PERFECT match for that whole D&D vibe. (BTW, another prefect D&D type track is Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys. HOLY AMAZEBALLS)
Listen to Dio in his earlier days, the group Rainbow was his big break to stardom. The song "Stargazer" is a must, but other great songs like "Tarot Woman", "Gates of Babylon", "Temple of the King" and a bunch more. Plus his days in Black Sabbath are awesome as well. "Heaven and Hell", "Children of the Sea", and "Sign of the Southern Cross"
Dio is the best. There is a new family band called Liliac that loves Dio and has done a cover of this song and it sounds fantastic. A young family band that shreds heavy metal is a big find these days.
If you want more "Holy Diver" - watch the cover by the family group Lilliac - and really, all of their covers. All brothers and sisters from a young age to late teens. Older sister sings, you'll never imagine how good.
Last in Line, Rainbow in the Dark for his solo career. Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules , Children of the Sea when with Black Sabbith. Gates of Babylon and Stargazer when with Rainbow.
THE VOICE of Metal ! Very unique that all metalheads share their opinions. There are many other great rock vocalists, but Dio is the greatest. So sad that he had passed. 😢 For his softer side try "Catch the Rainbow". ❤
Heaven and Hell from Black Sabbath, Man on the Silver Mountain from Rainbow, and Rainbow in the Dark. The guitarist is Vivian Campbell who replaced Steve Clark in Def Leppard....I also say check out the cover of Holy Diver by Killswitch Engage.
80s video games? Gotta go for GAUNTLET - the beast of an arcade game that allows 4 players at once : The Warrior (dubbed Conan, He-Man, etc), The Wizard, The Valkyrie, and The Elf. Wandering castles and other enchanted realms fighting hordes upon hordes of ogres, ghosts, demons, and even Death himself. Collect treasure, use potions, and gobble down food while trying to survive. I guess people argued too much over who got to play which character, so they put out Gauntlet II where you can choose any of the 4 characters, according to color : red, yellow, blue, green. They should have just done that from the start, lol. All those medieval fantasy adventure games were fantastic : Rygar, Rastan, Joust, Ghosts & Goblins, Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair II : Time Warp, etc...
As others have suggested I'd recommend Rainbow - Stargazer and Heaven & Hell from Dio. Heaven & Hell is actually Black Sabbath's song from the time that Dio was in the band.
When i was in like 2nd grade is when i discovered dio, still have the same cassette and i went to catholic school so i drew that holy diver cover on all my folders and the teachers prob thought i was the devil incarnate : P dio is legend : D

Hello Rachael Please check out a band called Liliac. They are siblings that do great covers of bands like Dio and Metallica and have also their own music also which are great.
It is interesting, the term "ride the tiger" is both a drug reference and a Kung Fu Longfist movement. Every time I hear or see the video, I'm reminded of my time in martial arts.
welcome to the greatest Rock Metal Singer in history no contest was lucky enough to meet both him n lemmy more than 11 times over 30 years , check out either mistreated by rainbow or stargazer or Heaven and hell Black sabbath , dio last in line live Any Dio Material really

masterpiece
Oh yeah, that one is amazing.
Please do the STUDIO version first!!

Shame on the Night, Turn up the Night, Mob Rules, We Rock, Stand Up and Shout
"Losing my insanity" is a favorite track of mine.
He was also in the band elf.
Ain't It All Amusing was my fav from them @@Templarofsteel88
Sunset Superman
From Dio:
Last in Line
Rainbow in the Dark
Man on the Silver Mountain (Rainbow)
& Mistreated (live)
& Sign of the Southern Cross
Dio also wrote this song by himself both music and lyrics before he even put the Dio band together.
RJD was a legend. Only stood about three apples tall, but still somehow managed a towering voice and presence in early Metal
Talking through the Guitar Solo....Are you Evil ?

For 80's metal, it's a cardinal sin to talk all the way through the guitar solo
This. And the official video version cuts most of the solo off, too.
😂 so true.. people react and blab when the people aren't singing during the 80's solo's
Dio is considered one of the metal vocal gods. This is one if my favorites of his, but it really didn't stretch his talents any. I think it has that classic 80s feel because everyone wanted to be like Dio.

Rainbow Stargazer, Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell and Dio Don't Talk to Strangers are top notch from this iconic singer.
Woman, this was 80s metal!
Thank God I was an 80s kid!!!!!!
I saw him with Rainbow more moons ago than l want to admit. What was amazing was the sound and power that came out of this small guy was unbelievable. He did own the stage.
"I could have been a dreamer" was my favorite... But Last In Line is a close second. ALL Dio songs are gold to me though

Love the artist, love the song, I've always hated this video though. I hope you have an amazing journey with his music.
Great video, in my opinion best voice of metal, another great one is the last in line .....and yes play more D &D!
Pushed my way to front row at Monsters of Rock 86 in Cotton Bowl! He can sing live too! "Shame on Night" is awesome too!
Now you have to do the Killswitch cover. So good!
Dio was the ultimate...Nice job.
Did really was the ultimate
I’ll go more out of the box on recommendations and say We Rock. Always loved the energy on that song.

Gotta love great 80’s classic metal with cheesy as frig videos lol.
Loving the purple in your hair!
You should check out The Last in Line. That's another good one

Gary Gygax love Dio's music so much. That he created D&D, based entirely on the lyrics of Dio songs. Which is a thing I just made up.
Dio is the best. There is a new family band called Liliac that loves Dio and has done a cover of this song and it sounds fantastic. A young family band that shreds heavy metal is a big find these days.
Last in line
Rainbow in the dark ,,, you won’t be disappointed
82 was his solo career. Before that black Sabbath and before that rainbow. A band before that and b4 they he was just a musician.
I’d also recommend Catch the Rainbow By Rainbow which is sung by Dio. Amazing performance from him
If you want more "Holy Diver" - watch the cover by the family group Lilliac - and really, all of their covers. All brothers and sisters from a young age to late teens. Older sister sings, you'll never imagine how good.
Ronnie James Dio...proof that dynamite comes in small packages.
In the early yrs of Dio, Ozzy and Iron Maiden the album was a story from the 1st track to the last is a story, and a message.
Rainbow- Mistreated Dio in vocals, Live in Munich. One of the best rock vocal rerformances of all time.
Definitely recommend checking out Last In Line by Dio. It's my personal fav.
Last in Line, Rainbow in the Dark for his solo career. Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules , Children of the Sea when with Black Sabbith. Gates of Babylon and Stargazer when with Rainbow.
The mighty midget. Yes, we call him that with all due respect. He was incredible. An absolute legend.
THE VOICE of Metal !

There's a Famicom game that's based on this song. It's also titled Holy Diver. It's a good game too, like Castlevania and Faxanadu.
Black sabbath Dio is a must too
Yep, the whole Mob Rules album is awesome..
As others have suggested I'd recommend Rainbow - Stargazer and Heaven & Hell from Dio. Heaven & Hell is actually Black Sabbath's song from the time that Dio was in the band.
Neon Nights, Heaven & Hell & Dont talk to Strangers are Epic DIO songs
Classic metal has a “Dio” sound not the other way around
I think doing your conclusion at the end rather at the start would be a bit better :) Otherwise love the videos!
Also worth a listen is the Killswitch Engage cover of this song. I mean, really anything by KSE is good, but the do a nice job on the cover.
All hail the king!
If you’ve never checked out Liliac, I swear Melody is the female reincarnation of Ronnie James Dio.

"Gates of Babylon" also by Rainbow would be another suggestion.
A three song sampler for Ronnie James Dio
Gates of Babylon by Rainbow
Sign of the Southern Cross by Black Sabbath
Don't Talk to Strangers by Dio
Try "He's the King of Rock and Roll"
The video reminds me so much of the original Diablo. Tristram Cathedral, as well as the Butcher and the Blacksmith in particular.
He's great live too.
I recommend Heaven and hell
This is when he joined black sabbath
If you liked Dio then you have to listen to him on
HEAVEN AND HELL
"I"
and THE MOB RULES
THE BLACK SABBATH DAYS..RIP RONNIE
Killswitch Engage covered this maybe 7-10 years ago, you should listen to that next!
Killswitch Engage did a phenomenal cover of this song. Howard Jones is great 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻💯 I loved RJD as a teenager so different from what was “popular” at the time
Rip Ronnie 😔 wish I had seen him live
Best singer ever
love Dio, 80's kid. Lost it at "3 peeps" lol
I saw Dio, mid 80s, holy diver tour, Hartford, Connecticut….. crap I’m getting old
should react to the Killswitch Engage remake of this song and video a true hommage to the original
You also really need to try Queensryche Take hold of the flame (Live in 84) Plus Judas Preist ( Take a vote on which one) Plus Iron Maiden Hallow Be Thy Name.
double tracking has been used since ABBA in the 70s.
Now, the Killswitch Engaged version
Hell[y] Diver [2]
