That worked well. I did the same thing years ago with a goose who didn't have a mate but built a nest every spring and sat on her eggs for weeks. As soon as she heard the goslings in the box she got all excited and as far as she was concerned her eggs had hatched.
I think you did something very sweet for this hen. I know some people are bashing you for the comment about the chicks being cheap enough that if they don't make it, it's ok. I get why you did and said that. You can't be spending premium dollars to give a hen babies to take care of. I loved this story. And the chicks were adorable!
I’ve found that popping one of those frozen gel packs underneath her will break her in minutes. You can wrap it in cloth if you’re afraid it might burn her but they’re smarter than you think and will get off the nest in a hurry.
So cute! We thought our Banty Cochin x Ameraucana was taken by a hawk. But she wasn't, turns out she was sitting on a clutch of eggs! Lol. She's our first broody.
I like to take my broody hen and chicks and lock them in a stall in the barn so the other chickens leave them alone and I can set up a cage just for them. :) Very cute. I may order some silkies just for this reason...
Good question. I am not sure. This hen was trying to mother some chick last year which was before she stated laying eggs. So my best guess would be it depends on the hen, buy some chick and find out. Thanks
So educate me on this! Will the hen quit laying now that there are chicks? or will she keep laying, but pay more attention to the chicks than the eggs!! Great Video by the way! ;-)
@ByNatureFarms Thank you for taking the time to educate me... This is good stuff my friend! Thank you! As I have told you before.... I am learning so much from this UA-cam!! lol ! ;-)
That just makes them moe broody(i have some)you should do "chicken jail" by building a seperate coop and locking her in it for the day until night time but make sure she goes out once a day :)
@ByNatureFarms Ahh okay, I haven't heard of that breed before. Well if you need a broody to raise future chicks, she is a keeper even past her egg laying time.
@skidmorehappyhouse Where we live now if we had a rooster our neighbors would not be very happy with us, but if I had a rooster I would let her sit on her eggs.
what breed is she and also the chicks breeds please. i love chickens. i have 20. im zoned for 25. i actually live in the city. west valley city utah. i live near the border of taylorsville. please answer.
@BillGoudy Think of a hen like she is a woman, A woman does not need a man to cycle, when she is pregnant she does not cycle, after birth she will start to cycle again. When a hen goes broody she will lay her clutch and then stop laying. She will start laying again while raising the chicks unless she molts. I am not sure when she will start laying again. We will be able to find out since she away from the others.
No. If you don't want chicks you shouldn't. Personally, chicks need more care and I don't think I know enough or have enough experience to raise chicks. Don't want to lose the chicks on account of ignorance. To break a hens broodiness, You got to keep pulling her away from the nest and keep away from it. Try giving her treats and distracting her from going back in. Cool her off by maybe holding her it some cold water, not freezing water. I had to break a broody hen this year and when the above didn't worked I sectioned her off in the run, make sure you have sufficient water and food for her, and i usually let her go to sleep back in the coop. This was my version of the chicken jail. She did tend to try sit on something again in the night but after 2-3 days she gave up and went back to laying a week after. If you hen is really stubborn, you can lock her in a cage with food and water and hang it up from the ground. Make sure the cage has a wire bottom and not solid, no bedding either, this is what most people use it seems when their hen is a stubborn one.
@countrybabe561 Yes I do the same kind of, they are living in the area with access to the rabbit droppings. I have thought about putting them in one of the light weight chicken tractors I built. Thanks for watching
Is that what happens to you when you approach a small, flightless bird who is sitting on some eggs? If so, you might want to get a helmet on before messing with them. (BTW, before you go calling people stupid, remember that it's "you're" and not "your")
Looks like she will be raising you some nice rooster dinners. But maybe you lucked out and one of the chicks will be a pullet. Is she a Brahma or a Delware hen ?
Exactly! My eyes are hurting after watching a minute or two of this video. He was filming the wall and the shoe and everything else other than the chicken. SMH
looks like I have broody hen; been sitting on her eggs for about four days now. I don't have rooster will those eggs actually hatch? Should i just stick golf balls underneath her? or figure out a way to break her out? Thanks!
MamaaaPerdue Your hen is just like you. Your eggs wont get fertile with out a man, your hens eggs wont be fertile with out a rooster. You can buy some fertile eggs and stick them under her or buy some chicks and stick them under her or put her in a wire cage for a week a see if that breaks her. Thanks for watching.
"Move it goddamit Charley. Fuck it Charles! Hold the fucking camera!... Sorry Char.... Sometimes daddy gets upset about stuff. It's not your fault. GOD DAMNIT CHARLEY! Hold still!! (Said every dad ever)
Why the chicken is not in the video? All I can see is the wall, a shoe and its tail!! That made my head dizzy. I watched this video in order to see the hen and the chickens not the wall !!! I stopped watching after a couple of minutes of disappointment.
It's so sad... the babies taken away from their mother, a lot of cocks slaughtered just for being males, females slaughtered once they stop producing eggs... Egg rearing is serious business. I have to admit, I have struggled to become a vegan/vegetarian, and right now, I'm eating meat... but that doesn't stop the industry from being a sad one.
I WANT TO SAY NICE JOB TO THE 5 YR OLD CAMERA PERSON ! ! ! GOOD JOB WITH PUTTING THE CHICKS !
That worked well. I did the same thing years ago with a goose who didn't have a mate but built a nest every spring and sat on her eggs for weeks. As soon as she heard the goslings in the box she got all excited and as far as she was concerned her eggs had hatched.
That's so sweet! What a good mom!
I would love to have that hen...She looks like a great mom....
I think you did something very sweet for this hen. I know some people are bashing you for the comment about the chicks being cheap enough that if they don't make it, it's ok. I get why you did and said that. You can't be spending premium dollars to give a hen babies to take care of. I loved this story. And the chicks were adorable!
how is that chicken so fluffy looking? it looks like its just hiding a bunch of air under its feathers. its looks so fluffy.
how awesome that you went to that length for your hen.
Cool baby chicks are so cute and watching the hen and chick relationship is very cool. Hope you have a good hatch.
I’ve found that popping one of those frozen gel packs underneath her will break her in minutes. You can wrap it in cloth if you’re afraid it might burn her but they’re smarter than you think and will get off the nest in a hurry.
Awww, how sweet! I love the sounds a broody chicken makes! She's so happy to be a momma!
Yes I did, Thanks for asking. She is a wonderful mother hen.
good video i like your way shes great hen with chicks
So cute! We thought our Banty Cochin x Ameraucana was taken by a hawk. But she wasn't, turns out she was sitting on a clutch of eggs! Lol. She's our first broody.
Beautiful hen.
I like to take my broody hen and chicks and lock them in a stall in the barn so the other chickens leave them alone and I can set up a cage just for them. :) Very cute. I may order some silkies just for this reason...
Great tip. I had thought about doing that but I want to see how good of a mother hen she was.
The hen is a Light Sussex, the chicks are mutts I bought from Orscheln, all ended up being boys.
Good question. I am not sure. This hen was trying to mother some chick last year which was before she stated laying eggs. So my best guess would be it depends on the hen, buy some chick and find out. Thanks
How cool is that ! The hen became broody almost instantly ... :)
That is a good Mommy hen.
Cool. Sounds like a great plan.
Also awesome job with the video
I think she will go back to where she wants to brood, if she can't get there she may or may be stop being broody. Thanks for watching.
So educate me on this! Will the hen quit laying now that there are chicks? or will she keep laying, but pay more attention to the chicks than the eggs!! Great Video by the way! ;-)
@dalecalder2003 Thank you. Did you wait a while after she had been broody before you added the goslings?
@ByNatureFarms Thank you for taking the time to educate me... This is good stuff my friend! Thank you! As I have told you before.... I am learning so much from this UA-cam!! lol ! ;-)
Hey :) can't wait to see your finished knife :D
Nothing was wrong with her. She was never in pain. A broody hen does not like to be messed with.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
@ByNatureFarms It was years ago but yes I think she had been sitting for a week or two.
beautiful hen👍
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Rustic By Nature WOW!!1,892 subscribers and you replied back, that is so cool and humble. Now im your 1,893rd subscriber👍
Thank you.
I wish you hold the camera stable
That just makes them moe broody(i have some)you should do "chicken jail" by building a seperate coop and locking her in it for the day until night time but make sure she goes out once a day :)
I don't know. The tag on the cage at Orscheln said something like "pan fry".
A long time ago I ordered from McMurry. They ship to the great plains states. Now I find a breeder and buy from them.
I did that and it worked thanks for the tip
+Sniper squad gaming Cool, Thanks for watching.
LOL had not thought of that. Thanks for watching.
Thank you
Just curious why you don't want her to be broody and raise her own chicks? She does seem to be such a great mom.
Can I move my broody hen to another spot or will she stop being broody
oh ok, thanks. is there a mcmurray in.... what state are you in?
@ByNatureFarms Ahh okay, I haven't heard of that breed before. Well if you need a broody to raise future chicks, she is a keeper even past her egg laying time.
@happymimi16 I was not sure what she would do that's why I bought cheap chicks. Sorry to hear your was an angry bird.
It is a good feeling when you find out your bird is still alive. Good luck with your hatch. Thanks for watching.
@skidmorehappyhouse Where we live now if we had a rooster our neighbors would not be very happy with us, but if I had a rooster I would let her sit on her eggs.
I've put ice cubes under my broody hens. That works sometimes.
what breed is she and also the chicks breeds please. i love chickens. i have 20. im zoned for 25. i actually live in the city. west valley city utah. i live near the border of taylorsville. please answer.
sussex chickens are the best :3
I have heard of something like that, Thanks.
She is a great mother. Thanks for watching
I agree,

She is a great hen. Thanks for watching.
When I get mine I will raise one hen, then when its older I'll get three more for her to care for.
She looks like she is in pain. Have you ever found out what's going on?
I dont want the chicken to go broody cause I dont want more chicks, so your solution is buy more chicks?
No. If you don't want chicks you shouldn't. Personally, chicks need more care and I don't think I know enough or have enough experience to raise chicks. Don't want to lose the chicks on account of ignorance.

What breed of hen is that?
@jmkm88 Getting very close to finishing it.I will post when I am done.
Cool I have a chicken siting on eggs and its been two weeks but I'm going to let her ha tech them because I have just 1 chicken

She is a Light Sussex. Thanks for watching.
@86mustang07 Thanks, she is wonderful.
what state are you in?
@JaxRL Thanks Jackie.
We moved so I sold her and her chick to a guy and his kids for a 4-H project.
@kitmarlowescot2 Thanks for watching. She is neither, she is a Light Sussex.
cool trick!
what breed of hen is that? she is so pretty
Light sussex
I have the same bird and was told it was a white Sussex. Out of all my hens, this hen is the most broody and hardest to break.
So, basically your advice on breaking a broody hen is to buy more chickens?? Not a very practical solution I have to say.
You could just eat the chicks later when they reach a decent meat size.
This video made me dizzy...some people just don't know how to take videos!
Exactly! My eyes are hurting after watching a minute or two of this video. He was filming the wall and the shoe and everything else other than the chicken. SMH

r u asking if he ate them?!
For the moment Kansas.
Adopted chicks
Cool
nice
@JRSKICK1 Thanks
What type of chicken is that
She is a Light Sussex. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much
@modoc42 Thanks Modoc
So if something happened to the chicks it doesn't matter because they only cost a couple dollars? Shame on you, Disgusting attitude.
the 5 year old did a better job with the camera than you
Prety
azul
Why buy chicks and "BREAK" her? Why not just let her hatch her own since she s a good mother anyway?
are they sexlinks of any kind?
"Move it goddamit Charley. Fuck it Charles! Hold the fucking camera!...
Sorry Char.... Sometimes daddy gets upset about stuff. It's not your fault.
GOD DAMNIT CHARLEY! Hold still!!

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get in the camera frame. Ba-dum-dum

Exactly... You should go vegan its so easy
If it was, Johanan, I would be vegan right now.
Delightra Cardeanne I have an idea you should get a lot of delicious stuff that's vegan, like fruits, soya bean, tofu... Idk
Johanan Micaiah I do LOVE soya and tofu, but nobody around me does. When I am able to live alone, I'll do it.
Thanks
