Excellent tutorial. Really useful. Just finished restoring a Dansette Viva that will not switch off. Thanks to you I now know how to fix it. Many thanks, much appreciated.
That is just why i watched this video as a deck turned up with a spring in the bottom of the player i didnt have an old deck so i watched your video and now know were it goes back on. big thumbs up.
@@boblordylordyhowie The drive wheel spring might be weak, not pulling the wheel against the turntable. Or the stepped pulley might be set incorrectly on its shaft. Just a thought.
Your recomendation for the speed selector to sit in the middle of the stepped piece of metal, would adjusting that screw slight up or down on theory change the speed?
@@g4nsj the motor spins freely, and I've re oiled the top bearing section. I will say, the bottom bearing carrier plate for the motor, when I removed it, didn't feel like there was a bearing in there. I could see a small brass insert that the motor shaft sits in, but that didn't look like it spins in there.
BSR was originally ' Birmingham Sound Reproducers' I believe they adopted the 'Better Sound Reproduction' title some time later which I always thought was quite poor the former being far better. They had two factories which employed a huge amount of people one at Stourbridge and the other a few miles away at Cradley Heath, both being in the 'Black Country' miles away from Birmingham, perhaps the original concern started in the City, I don't know. They also produced a more expensive range of transcription decks under the 'Mc Donald' name named after the founder of the company.
Hi Ray. I was just wondering, was the idler wheel in good condition? Some early record player users would leave it engaged when not in use. This would form a 'dent' in the idler wheel, causing it to make a noise while rotating. This would, of course, mean replacing the rubber idler wheel, if you could find a suitable replacement.. 🤔
really enjoyed this and learned loads. Now have the confidence to tackle one myself. One question though, could one of these old cartridges be replaced with something a bit more modern
Beware of using WD40 near plastic, used to use it on volume controls on tv's,week or two later the plastic around the volume controls changed composition and broke apart.
Hi firstly thanks for the great video. I’ve got a dansette conquest and I’ve tried to take off top of turntable. I’ve removed c-clip but turntable doesn’t come off I’ve also removed bar in middle but can’t get it off. Am I missing something. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
thanks for this helpful and informative info. Having trouble with the speed control on an old BSR MA65 (Ferguson) have been following and cleaning as your video, but unable to remove the deck from the casing due to the transit screws staying in place. Have you any advice?
Comments have been disabled on your recent rf interference video. I believe it's computer interference. I get a very similar sound when my Pc is on and it stops when I unplug it.
Hi Andy, clean and lubricate the motor bearings and all other moving parts. It's probably the idler wheel that needs replacing. I have seen them on eBay from time to time. Cheers, Ray.
Hi Ray thanks for the video very interesting, I have done a few decks in the past but some time ago bit i have a BSR deck of my own in a old germanium transistor record/radio/tape deck what was handed down to me (not working of course) but i have repaid it now though mind you i am looking for a couple of 4mm metal capped wire ended dial lamps 5v (if you know what i mean haha) Regaurds paul
So, are these decks meant to be springy? I saw another video of a Dansette Conquest as I'm planning to buy one and it did the same. My guess is that its springy for the vibrations and it doesn't damage the record?
hello radio workshop,I was wondering as im trying to re lube my bsr turntable and my question was,do you use wd40 for everything,or do you use a different grease or oil for certain parts. And for the ball bearings do u use wd40 for that?I have wd40 and was wanting to ask before i used it for everthing.Thank you very much and love the video!☺
White lithium grease works wonders on BSR record changers, especially for the thrust bearing assembly, underside track of the cycle cam gear, and various linkages, nooks and crannies underneath the turntable. You just have to clean off all the old grease (you can try WD40) with rubbing alcohol and a qtip or liquid wrench with a paintbrush. 3-in-1 or sewing machine oil is best for lubing the middle and lower motor shaft and bearings. And there is Rawn re-grip rubber cleaner/rejuvenator for the idler wheel.

No doubt I am going to be back and forth watching this as I try to get one to work again.
Good luck with the job.
@@g4nsj I'll need it, I can't fathom how it is supposed to work and don't want to start dismantling it and make it worse.

@@g4nsj I keep trying with this but the drive wheel won't keep hitting the mark, if I change speed it stops running.

Restoring a BSR RP40 and I'm about 2-3% too slow after re greasing and oiling

Hi Bobby, most of my videos are in the members' area of my web site. I do hope to be adding some more public videos soon. Cheers, Ray.
before I oil the upper motor shaft I wrap saran wrap[or something similar] around the idler step[s]

Hi Ray Good video. I prefer to remove as much of the old hardened grease from the parts and regrease , WD is fine as a quick fix though.
Glpi lpi If I recall correctly, we used to use Molyslip grease.
we have something along those lines called superlube

I don't know the tracking force. It's been a long time since I worked on them.
