So sorry this went up a day late! The editing ended up taking much longer than I expected. I hope you enjoy & I’ll be back Friday with a new video! Not sure what it’s gonna be yet 😂
I cannot wait for our local pet store gets in more mantids! My son raised a Chinese mantis afraid from the egg and he had a ghost mantis that sadly passed 2 molts away from adulthood and we don’t know why! His Chinese mantis, Sam, lived a year and laid an otheca.
It’s beautiful! Not overcrowded like some I’ve seen. Not sure I would enjoy feeding bugs, but it is what it is and as long as it brings you joy that’s all that matters 😊
Get an inkbird humidity controller paired up with a reptile fogger. That's what I do for my ikea cabinet. It's all automated and I fill it like once a week with water. Turns on at 70% and under, and turns off at 80%, rinse and repeat.
Girl. Put your grow lights stuck along the inside middle part of the cabinet doors where they come together🙌🏼 do 2 or 3 going up and down. Everything will be getting good light but it won't be right up against everything plus you wont be able to see the actual light. It will look awesome in there. Use tape or sticky tab things to hide the light cords and keep them aligned around the edge of the doors out of the way.
Maybe a small fishbowl as a water reservoir in the bottom with a nylon rope wick (paracord might work if you have it on hand) one end jabbed into the moss wall and hanging into the water. The sphag should wick the rest of the way up to the top. My own (similar idea) setup uses a 20 gallon fish tank as a reservoir but I won't suggest a whole new, expensive, hobby to solve your problem lol 😂 (although I think you'd love fish keeping)
I see isopods I click. I'm a hobby isopod breeder so I have a shit ton of them but I still think I dont have enough haha. I love them so much and seeing other people get into them fills me with incredible joy!!! The are such underrated pets!!! Please also do make sure to have leaf litter in your terrarium cuz that's what they will eat most of the time and it keeps them from nibbling at our live plants. Plus they will hide underneath it and feel more safe!! (and it makes it look more naturalistic in my opinion) Also: Funfact: Isopods are crustaceans and breath through gills!!! even the fully terrestrial ones!! They need high humidit because of that and will die if the enclosure is too dry!!!
Adding weather stripping to the inside of your doors, then inside of your cabinet to match would seal the cabinet better and you wouldn't need to water as often
Super cool 🦋🦋🦋 I have a praying mantis that has been guarding my garden, he is huge and I absolutely love him and his funny appearances when he starts cussing me for watering the wrong areas😂
These guys are so cute! Fun fact terrestrial isopods are detritivores meaning they break down decaying material and turn it into soil. Bugs are incredibly important! Be kind to bugs people and support your local bugs❤🪲 Ps. This includes centipedes, arachnids, and roaches too (I know a lot of people hate them but they are very important).
I have all my carnivorous plants along the top of my terrarium (which also helps with any fungus gnats) and small succulents (string of pearls and turtles) which cascade beautifully down. I also splurged on a few rubber ducky isopods (which I never see! 😅) along with my dairy cows ms springtails.
Hello I'm experiencing the same issue as Harlie along the top of my cabinet. Everything is dying due to the heat and humidity. I'm curious about the carnivorous plants you planted on the top. Thanks
@@ramzirais4988 Hi! I have nepenthes, pingucula, and drosera with moss/perlite soil in small pots. I put these in similar sized deep clear plastic drip trays to keep it filled with (only) RO water so that the plants are always water-logged. Then I pin miss to cover the pots. They love the bright light conditions and the moss helps to retain humidity up there :-)
@@cyagurldo you think you could post a picture? Haha. Or explain how the pots are mounted? Did you just attach them over the original moss with silicone?
Yea you can totally buy an automated reptile mister, mine even connects to google home haha. Speaking of reptiles, in my greenhouse cabinet I have a crested gecko running around, if you enjoy the bugs maybe consider adopting a low maintenance gecko? Obviously do your research but crested geckos are awesome for this, they dont eat any of the plants and they eat fruit, super cute and loves to be held at night. But of course if you add any larger critters, like your mantis make sure the humidity is at safe levels. I added a small computer and it keeps the humidity at good levels, plus plants love air flow.
I’d say just get a less intense bulb for the cabinet! Lol. Or, maybe just to fill that space at the top, try some good old fashioned… Tradescantia zebrina, or any relative of that! I like it, idk if everyone does. It fills a space in no time, makes flowers and can likely handle that lighting you have. Or you could try some sort of succulent that is ok with more moisture? Of course there’s string of turtles, but I’ve always wanted to try string of pearls in a vertical or wall planting. They do make aerial roots after all… or when in doubt, just fill a space like that with creeping fig! Preferably the cute oak leaf ficus. That will definitely fill it up… Or Marcgravia, Pellionia, tons of different vining and shingling plants to choose from.
Love it and love the bugs too! I’m thinking I’d like something like this someday. I totally get your point about watching the bugs versus just looking at plants. If a mantis would be happy, that would be pretty sweet.
I really enjoyed this video. It was informative for those who have or want a cabinet, and cool to hear you share how much you enjoy watching the insects. Thanks.
I have Onychiuridae in both of my Rudsta's. I guess they came in on a plant and have multiplied. I love watching them was they move around. I've shipped in ladybugs and put them on my plants for mealy bugs and an infestation of spider mites. I love watching the good bugs go to work. I have hopes to have a terrarium cabinet someday but for now, I have smaller terrariums that I need to work on. Loved the update.🐞
Would some smaller bromeliads be happy with the higher light and less moisture? or air plants? I think Hoy are a great idea though. Overall it looks so great!
Wow amazing. I really love that hairy ficus villosa i wonder if they can grow out of the terrarium too. The bugs were interesting too. Can worms also live in there i think they make interesting burrows. I love to do a terrarium with lady bugs i love those.
Girl let's go with the bugs!! I don't have snails or anything like that but I have 5 different species of isopods and of course springtails and they're the most lovable Lil buggies. Now I want to combine them with a large terrarium so bad hahaha
Absolutely fascinating, I enjoyed this video so much. I think a praying mantis would be a great addition if you decide they could survive/not devour the other wildlife. I'll bet some more ferns would fill in those spots nicely. I've thought about getting an Ikea cabinet just for ferns. Thank you for sharing this video, would love more updates!
Love the bugs! I have a few terrariums and am wanting to add some critters. My husband is a bit squeamish at the idea, but I think I have him more or less on board. I was the little girl that collected bugs and made bug houses, so it’s really the logical next step for me 😁
Harli, use rhipsalis or some other jungle cactus that can handle higher light! They love getting sprayed and high humidity but hate their roots staying constantly wet. Misting once a day would be fine for them. They'd love the light, be able to handle the drying of the moss, and they'd add fun texture!! Like honestly, a Sedum morganianum would do very nicely in there! :D
I love this cabinet!! I built my cabinet with some inspiration from your cabinet and added a waterfall. Posted a video on my UA-cam of mine. I would loveeee to add more bugs like isopods but I’m afraid since I have a water tank. I have released springtails to address mold. I appreciate the bug feed rituals you mentioned because I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that if I do decide to add more bugs to mine. I added lights on the sides because I didn’t think the one light on top was enough. I am having a dry patch on top too, but I think it’s from the fans I have up there. I have a misting system from reptizoo installed to keep up with the moisture and I love it. Grateful for your cabinet since it inspired mine and happy to see that it is doing so well and holding up thus far!
Cool ! Been following your cabinet since you started it. Have the same milsbo, just with the modified shelves etc.. like your setup with the terrarium. A reptile mist system tubing may fit through the 2 holes on the top of the cabinet. Very cool! 😎
HARLI you got me with the plants, then you decked me with the anime, and now you curb-stomping me with the BUGS??? The way we would've been absolute best fucking friends if we knew each other growing up 🤣🤣
Thanks for the update and info!! I’ve started my cabinet/terrarium builds but life got in the way after silicone and blacking out sides. I’m also scared to start the expanding foam part (afraid I won’t like the outcome). Hopefully next week I can tackle it.
Harli have you tried growing baby tears or creeping fig on top? Or if it’s too bright at the top would you consider putting a small square shade cloth underneath the light! 💚Natalie
@@katiewilliams9273 Yeah fungus nat's will be eaten and maybe some springtails, all the other bugs will be too strong to get stuck on the sticky leaves.
Ouuu yay!!! Perfect timing ❤️ I’d love to get a cabinet someday. I’ve gotten so many alocasia varieties in the last month, because I’m pretty sure I need higher humidity now going into fall (east coast of Canada). Yours is such nice inspo!! I also just finished placing a speed order for super white juvenile monstera Albo’s and my adrenaline is through the roof right now 😂😂 a couple of the ones I really wanted went out of stock before I could place them all in my cart, but I’m super happy with the 3 really white ones I’ll have coming to me in October 🤍💚 *edited for spelling*
Hello Harli and thank you a lot for this video. I watched your terrarium-building video, which inspired me to build my own terrarium. I'm experiencing some humidity issues after completely sealing the terrarium with weather stripping. There's constant humidity and drops on the glass, making it difficult to see inside the cabinet. I'm wondering if you've had this issue and if you sealed your cabinet entirely from top to bottom or left gaps for air exchange, like between the doors vertically. Thank you.
Why not make a weeping waterfall? Use a small pump at the bottom, run a tube up to the top, and let it drip. Lots of ways to customize the top part. I'd probably do a narrow piece of PVC with holes drilled every inch or so.
So sorry this went up a day late! The editing ended up taking much longer than I expected. I hope you enjoy & I’ll be back Friday with a new video! Not sure what it’s gonna be yet 😂
Great job
