I totally agree!! I love it that they are close by and work together multigenerational. He married a hard working, tough lady and got a bonus of a hard working father in law!!! What a blessing!!
I'd use the barn, at least a couple " kennels " to raise the turkeys. It has a outside run you could put shade cloth over top to keep them from flying out.
Dorm rooms/Arbnb for workshop attendees to stay in when they come in from out of state! Or, a she-shed for Lorraine! I'm pretty sure that the room with the metal was for grain/feed and the metal deterred the rodents...I can not tell you how extremely happy we are that y'all found this property! SOW much potential!! 💝🌟🙏👋🤩
OH Jason please don't knock it down. I am 71 years of age & keep watching beautiful old buildings being demolitioned- RESTORE & RE-CREATE. That is Heritage & I only wish I owned it. Cheers Denise- Australia
Jason, please take the roses to Lorain!!! These are beautiful and native to NC. Please don't kill them all. Loraine can root them and then put them where you can all enjoy them. P.S. Your MIL would love them, too.
Set up a water capture system from the roof run-off. That will give you time to think about what else you could do with the barn, while still having the barn be useful.
Jason I don't know if you have thought about getting some goats but they sure would help in getting all of the growth under control and keep it under control plus you could keep them housed in that old barn...
AirBnb for agri-tourism opportunities was the first thing that came to my mind. I happen to work in the vacation rental industry so that's just how I'm programmed to think. :) It's nice to have options and I'll be looking forward to whatever you build out of the barn. All the best to you, your family and your viewers, from California.
From what I can tell, the bones of that building are in great shape. Put up some new siding, gutters, and keep the roof leak free and you’ve got another very nice and useful barn! I’m super jealous! Would make great winter accommodations for your animals
that barn seems well worth fortifying to keep long term, using such buildings make great workshops ot wood working places plus storage of course and setting up areas for plenty of uses. definitely secure, support the structure possibly solar and batteries to provide basic lighting, if you want to have it as a work area the needs considerable electricity and water plus sewerage of course.
Hey Jason ; High ground ; Roof that doesn't leak. Perfect scenario for equipment, implement/vehicle storage. PLUS, rainfall capture with gravity fed irrigation.
TFS and taking us along. Just love your channel. ❤ would love to have a space to get my garden tools off my patio. I love the idea of water catchment as well. Many blessings and much love.
I like the idea of a garden storage place for tools, equipment etc. Maybe even to store garlic and onions that are drying to cure them. Catching the water would definitely be a blessing perhaps even to water some livestock. Just don't tear it down...please. Y'all have a Blessed day.
I found out on Just a few acres on you tube that when you first get your turkeys don’t feed them for two hours and they do better Pete said he doesn’t have any problems.😊
Dog kennels could be put to multi use. Broody chickens and her eggs moved here to hatch in safety(free chicks)👍☺️. Meat birds or baby turkeys. Sick/injured animal cages. We multi use our dog kennels that way.
Is that sheet metal on the wall of the small room??? If yes, it probably where they stored the feed and grain and the metal is an attempt to keep out mice, rats, skunks, racoons, snakes and/or other varmints. ???????
Limewash paint the whole thing first, then Half animal /half storage. Very good multiple purpose building. The distance away from the house would dictate to me what uses it has... Good video as always.
RE: Barn. It should be one great big chicken coup and breeder barn for other animals. Also can keep garden supplies, etc. Get water and electricity to it.
Hi Jason, native Angelino/Californian turned homesteader here. Love your channel! I Binge watch it all the time with my wife and 3 small kids. You have such an engaging way of telling your story. Keep up the amazing work, we are following your journey and applying it to ours out here in the outskirts of southern California. Idea for your old barn. Turn it into a harvest host dedicated to your subscribers who want to stay for an extended period of time (a month or so) to learn directly from your experience. There would be a predetermined fee for room/board, possibly RV hookups for folks like myself who travel on wheels, and included in the package would be a one on one "program" that would involve you and your wife teaching first hand the guests at your harvest host.
Ich finde es toll wie ihr mit den Tieren umgeht! Sie sind zwar zum Essen, aber sie haben ein tolles Leben vorher. Danke dafür und lieben Gruß aus Deutschland.🤗
Jason, A barn roof that doesn't leak is a GOLD MINE!!!! Shore up the foundation where needed...Run Electricity if needed...I would use 1/4 for Rabbit Growing, you can never have enough rabbit manure...then I would use 1/2 of hay loft for water capture and use gravity feed to exterior long term storage center...Cheers from Maine.
I think this would be a wonderful wood shop for you. You need a large dedicated space for all of your projects, and this would be a great place for that. But I've got to say, I also LOVE the idea of a general store! Regardless what you do, I know it will be well done and cared for. You do such great work! And Randy is such a good help!
I think maybe a wood shop/people barn would be super sweet. That way you could use it for your projects but also to host the occasional butchering or other class you guys put on
Reinforcing the structure and make it a cute cottage, especially since you said it has a solid foundation…possibilities are endless, take your time and the vision will unfold
Fill center with concrete, fix wood, clear out and around. Tool shed/ Greenhouse plant starting shed. That what I would do. Whatever you do it will be great!!!!! Your Father in law is a keeper❤❤❤❤❤
J , As you knock down the overgrowth around the building and add gutters and holding tanks for rain water catchment , you will be thinking of the highest and best use of that building , and I think you should name it.
Capture water from the roof with water tanks, Convert half to a green house, to produce vegetables, the rest would be storage for equipment & hay storage. It you thinking of raising sheep that would be a great area or a large turkey area, which you could enclose with netting so the turkeys will not fly away.
I am late watching this, but was overly excited to see the barn once again. Jason you have definitely been working around it nicely as well as Randy . Since it’s not a priority, clean it out during the winter and haul away the junk . Maybe think of using a portion of it to maybe sell some of the items you make , also produce, maybe eggs , and canned goods to processed chickens and a place for workshops that’s more permanent. I guess the ideas are endless. Maybe after cleaning it , you can get a more visual idea . I loved seeing it again, there’s just something about an old barn that resonates to a period gone by !
It would take A Lot of work to get it fixed up enough, but i think you should convert that space into a proper budgeting/meat processing facility. Maybe even with a walk-in cooler for dry-aging meats, or a full smoke room.
For your turkeys have Ben build you one of those metal pens he made for someone else's goats, but put a wire roof on it. You can also make it taller with built in roosts too, and it's still mobile so you cam move them everyday and they will have plenty of room to roam around.
Erect guttering and connect to water butts to collect plenty rain water. Inside construct an area to dry things you have grown or plan to grow and dry them there such as onions.garlic.potatoes. herbs. Make an indoor work space area for seed sowing on rainy days . put shelving units in for bags of compost and fish bone and blood meal .plant pots.small tools. Seeds.vermiculite. Build a tool storage area . Have a dedicated area for animal feeds .
I love yalls videos but always remember as humans we are stewards of the land.. and everything you doing is what everybody should be doing and it is a blessing that you share it for all to see
I would definitely make repairs to it and keep it, it has all kinds of potential .... No telling what it would cost to build it back new with the cost of lumber now ....
Omgoodness what a lovely barn! So much you can do with this! Several things popped into my mind. You said storage for garden supplies….I would use the dog kennel side for that and the other side an outdoor kitchen? Sounds nice to harvest, put your tools up, and clean produce before taking it inside. OR even making the dog side into a brooder for chick's looks like you have a fence already so they can get accumulated to being on dirt/ grass before putting them out in the pasture or even have your laying hens there. The other side half tool storage half outdoor kitchen. If you have chickens on the other side and an outdoor kitchen it would be useful to give them scraps. Having the middle open I would imagine it would be an easy clean up in the stalls and create compost kind of like Justin's pole barn? The room with the metal paneling I would install a cool bot and use it as a cool room or root cellar.
The trails spray with 41% glyphosate and 2-4D. That will help reduce the growth on the trails and prevent saplings to grow in. May need to do in early spring and beginning of summer, but after that you will be good until the next spring. Give it at least an hour of drying time. Just saves blades for the mower and time. Works wonders. Best to invest a pull behind sprayers with boom spray and extension hose sprayer for a few hundred dollars to pull behind the mower.
It has a lot of potential. Definitely worth investing in. Find a local sawmill and use rough lumber to restore it. Clean it out, plumb it up and decide how best to utilize it. What a blessing.
Any viable roof and firm foundation is always a potential. Watercatch roof, tool and equipment storage living quarters for poultry or livestock, hay storeage, craftshop or even living quarters.
I like the way you think, there are many uses for a structure like that! I learned with my chickens, to only trim ONE wing, it puts them out of balance.
It's great you have that. We have two barns here on our property. Both from around 1928. One was a tobacco drying barn and the other is where they stored hay, milked cows or whatever else. But at least you can access yours and each room. But our hay barn, we can't. Each room is separated by stem walls, making it difficult to navigate. If you can keep it, restore it. Plenty of space to do things. General store would be cool.
If it had power and water it would be ideal as an all-weather chicken processing classroom or demo space for your farm builds; as a space for farm-to-fork events; you could convert one of those side rooms into a large cold room and another as canned food storage; accommodation for WWOOF workers. If you got it really beautiful and you were up for the work, you could rent it out for events like dinners or country weddings. There are so many possibilities.
Clean the barn up, use the top for a hay loft like it is intended to feed any beefy boys you get in the future. Bottom with the cages you can start breeding chicken to sell!
I would tear it down and use all the wooden & metal pieces to rebuilt in the concrete areas 2 different smaller barns. One as a greenhouse and one as a storage for all the gardening tools & machinery 😇 definitely you’ll have leftover pieces to fix any problems you might have with your main barn! 😊 love y’all guys, y’all so creative and hardworking, great job 👏🏼! Xoxo, Marios from Greece 🇬🇷
Rain catchment would be HUGE! No doubt you already know that 1" of rain from 1000ft² of roof = 600gal(approx). No matter what you hold it in, whether it be daisy chained IBC totes or a free or cheap bulk water tank found on CL, etc, you could have a LOT of water stored along the side of your barn. And that means an incredible source of gravity fed water 😎👍 I'm really looking forward to seeing what becomes of this barn! Keep it up, Jason! And please, please don't hold back on the projects No matter how they turn out; referencing your podcast with Al and Ben. Your transparency, all of you, shows others that you aren't perfect or a pro, and that sometimes things fail or go through a number of revisions before they work like you want them. All of you, and your families, are an inspiration to a great number of people. Some of them get stuck in the analysis paralysis or just don't get out of the gate from self doubt or fear of "failure". Edison was quoted with saying "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." And regarding the lightbulb, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Through it all we're here with ya man! Many blessings, Keith in OR 🧔🏼👋🏻
Air bnb would be super cool especially a few years from now when you've tamed the land with like whimsical/fairytail hike through the Forest maybe relocating some of those Blackberry patches put them in your Forest along the nature hike as well as viney like plants with flowers that create canopies and all this could Shadow the front porch of your Airbnb I think it would look super badass
Wow, another barn! I like the look of it. The hay mow upstairs is kind of cool. It would be cool to have kids sleep up there like Little House on the Prairie if you did an Air B & B. I'm glad the roof is sound and collecting water off the roof would be a good idea. It sure got overgrown. Thanks for this video Jason.
Keep it clean & clear. Next year figure it out. It's relatively close to the house I think. Storage for items you don't want in the other buildings for the time being.
I’d give anything for a barn like that to raise all kinds of farm animals! Chickens, turkeys, etc… in the dog kennels. Goats could go in the other side. That’s a dream barn!
When you and your father in law start working. You both turn over grown to workable space. Just laughed about the snake comment. Just saw the clip of the snake in barn video yesterday. It's wonderful to have extra barns to be useable. Weather will be cooling off soon. Be ready to do plans then. Blessing
Was a great video Jason. That building is definitely worth keeping for the future. Give it time clean it up and you will find a good use for you in it one day. Storage for sure for now. High and dry
I’m sure you’ll find plenty of used for the space; it’s great to have multiple covered spaces for equipment. Please wear a mask when cleaning out sheds or bedding. I’m still not completely recovered from double pneumonia caused from cleaning out a shed. It occurred to me while stirring up lots of dust, that I needed a tight fitting mask.
'They grew some stuff in here', bahahahahahahahahaha Note that while not all parts of the barn are made of hardwood that termites prefer soft wood. Termites may start on hardwood but will move onto the preferred soft wood. The reason you still see many of the old time barns standing is because they knew to use cured hard wood for frames and such in order for the building to remain standing for long periods. Looking forward to see what you do with the old barn. You are very lucky to have your family helping out. My husband and I have been doing all the work ourselves on our homestead for 16 years and it is hard work, ecspecially as we get older. p.s. try to carry a walking stick when exploring old abandoned bldgs so that if you have to knock or flip wildlife such as snakes, etc... you can do so safely.
If it was mine then I would start with cleaning it out and around it. If it is close to a power and water source then maybe run them to it or just put gutters and collect rain. I would probably fill the center area with wood chips or gravel(depending on dip size) so its level with the concrete or close to it. I would probably use it during the winter for my animals since it can store hay and is already set up mostly to house animals.
Props to Randy!! Always helping out!!!
Great idea
Using it to capture water for a garden or orchard is a great idea.
👍 right on!
Use old barn for garden tools and wood working shop
@@SowtheLand Air B&B that captures water and passive income
Dorm rooms/Arbnb for workshop attendees to stay in when they come in from out of state! Or, a she-shed for Lorraine!

Huge potential in the building. Getting to it, cleaning and making general repairs can give you a better idea.
yes, I think so too
Its good to just get the basics done for now, lights, repairs, power and fixing damage. Once you grow into it I'm sure you'll find uses
4:41 "They grew some stuff in here" 🤣🤫
Jason, I love your persistent work at improving your property. You have amazing in laws BTW amazing
Yes the in-laws don't get enough recognition. Her dad works so hard
Use half of it as a green house! Store all the gardening equipment in it! A potting shed in part! Once you run water and power it will be golden!❤
Yes, awesome!
Set up a water capture system from the roof run-off. That will give you time to think about what else you could do with the barn, while still having the barn be useful.
excellent!
Jason I don't know if you have thought about getting some goats but they sure would help in getting all of the growth under control and keep it under control plus you could keep them housed in that old barn...
Goats are a good source of milk and meat and they are good landscapers.

Milk cow !
I love it when a new Sow The Land video pops up. Great content. 🤗🥰❣️

Hey Jason ; High ground ; Roof that doesn't leak. Perfect scenario for equipment, implement/vehicle storage. PLUS, rainfall capture with gravity fed irrigation.
From newby homesteaders chasing around feeder pigs to present day homesteading mentors, you've guys ROCK. Love your channel.
Definitely save it. It's gonna come in handy for something in the future.
I believe that utilizing the roof for water capture to plumb to an orchard is an excellent idea. Those brown turkeys are looking good !
I love that you never whine about anything. You just get er done! Great sense of humor.
That would make a great butchering center!
A shop for butchering, kitchen looking room for preparing foods, I love the barn 👍👍
TFS and taking us along. Just love your channel. ❤ would love to have a space to get my garden tools off my patio. I love the idea of water catchment as well. Many blessings and much love.

I found out on Just a few acres on you tube that when you first get your turkeys don’t feed them for two hours and they do better Pete said he doesn’t have any problems.😊
While I saw that as well I think Jason's real problem is the poor genetics of his turkeys. Those leg problems are not normal.
Hey. I told him about that in the last video! I even included the link! 🙄 😉😃👍✌
Also you should make the chicken coop their for your egg layers and use the roof to collect rain water for chickens and for the orchard.
or at least bird brooding area...
Excellent advice!
Yes limewash to sanitize and protect it.
Whoa. How did you keep that gem quiet? A whole new chapter. Cunning. Umm.. The Cider House? 🤗
The playful POV's always make me chuckle. ❤
If you don't already own a chipper, it might be a good investment as you clear your homestead.
I think it would be a great community barn for your butchering classes.
Shout out to your help he's always there for you
First thing to do with both barns is put up gutters.
Guide the water to where you want with some piping.
GO with Gravity...
The metal sheetfed room was a wash room for dogs. It was a puppy mill
You could raise rabbits in the barn. The use the rest to store your tools and equipment.
You are so Blessed to have your father-in-law always helping you!
Ich finde es toll wie ihr mit den Tieren umgeht! Sie sind zwar zum Essen, aber sie haben ein tolles Leben vorher. Danke dafür und lieben Gruß aus Deutschland.🤗
Indeed... Our food animals should ALWAYS be treated with great respect. It has been said that traumatized animals pass that trauma on in their bodies.
Pheasants & rabbis in the dog cages.. definitely solid for smaller animals in the winter while serving as a hundred other things!
💚 Great that you're still figuring out all the areas of your property! Randy is the Man..for the job! 💚
So good to see you saving that barn. You’ll fine just the right use for it. 😁❤️🌹
Woodshop would be cool. I've seen some of your woodworking projects, you're good at that.
That would be cool!
Water is life. Good idea for the orchard.😊
the biggest project on that building will be leveling it and finishing the concrete.

What a hidden treasure! I'm sure you will decide on the future of the building as you are cleaning it out! You always have really good ideas!
What ever you decide, please show step by step. I would love to see that. Thanks for sharing.

cut the fence from the barn it will make it easier to get into that area to clear. and you could use the tractor to pull it out or your little truck.
Looks like a great home for sheep. 😉 Then they can eat the overgrowth and help clear the land for you.
Air bnb would be good. Especially for ppl who wants to start homesteading. Much love to y'all.👍💛🙏
I love yalls videos but always remember as humans we are stewards of the land.. and everything you doing is what everybody should be doing and it is a blessing that you share it for all to see
I think tools and your workshop makes sense to me
me too! thanks
I would definitely make repairs to it and keep it, it has all kinds of potential .... No telling what it would cost to build it back new with the cost of lumber now ....
Omgoodness what a lovely barn! So much you can do with this!

Workshop for sure. I’m thinking a wood chipper would be a great investment for your homestead
can't wait to see what it looks like when you get it cleaned up. Your best use will become apparent when you get it clean.
@5:18 That old barn should be your workshop flower ✊🏾 I love seeing the progress of the homestead! Wishing you luck on the new batch of turkeys.
The trails spray with 41% glyphosate and 2-4D. That will help reduce the growth on the trails and prevent saplings to grow in. Edison was quoted with saying "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." And regarding the lightbulb, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Through it all we're here with ya man! Many blessings, Keith in OR 🧔🏼👋🏻
Water catchment, equipment storage, and permanent butchering shop depending on square footage.
Breathe and think about it. Looks like a cold weather project to me.
🤗💞🤗 Blessings 🙏 Good to see Randy as well!
Nice set up you got! Those turkeys look so healthy. Your farm is looking SO good. All that rain causes so much growth lol.
I would love to watch a series about restoring those old barns that’s what I need in my life
Let it be two things. An experience for people to see and purchase produce and products while working on projects a living art.
Brooder, a place for chickens, I would use it for animals. I love it!
In and outdoor garden/greenhouse/water collection/tool storage and a couple hives in loft
