That Startling Terror Tales 11 is tough as nails and Baffling’s colors look amazing. My highest Golden Age is a 9.0 Looney Tunes. Heritage has it but I still have an 8.5 Looney Tunes
Great haul with the Baffling leading the way. It sounds like it all worked out, and those finds really helped cushion the blow of losing the other book. Plus you get the bragging rights that come with that copy of Baffling.
Very good question. Do I save money for a big grail or buy other less grail? You are blowing my mind. Did not think about earlier or golden age comics until your show. Really opens up my eyes. To each their own. Thank you for your content. Amazing purchase.
I acknowledge that I am different from most comic book collectors in that I pay less attention to a book being a "key" or having characters who are to appear in an upcoming movie and focus more on the art of the cover and the story inside the book. Personally I would rather have a number of books with covers that I appreciate and absorbing stories that a single copy which is deemed to be a "major key". But that's me. I do enjoy your videos and get a kick out of the enthusism you display when showing books which will be added to you keepers list. Happy Ho;idays to you and all your subscribers.
I absolutely love these Golden Age books. What a haul. I like when you enlighten us on the history of these special books. I like getting a larger haul of lower keys than getting that one big key. More comics to enjoy. Getting Luke Cage Hero for Hire #1, Marvel Premiere #15, Amazing Spider-Man # 101 and 129, Detective Comics #369 and Batman # 181 were much more satisfying than getting incredible Hulk #181.
Great haul. I own a Cosmic Aeroplane Super-Mystery Comics Vol.3 No.6 with one of the most bizarre sought after covers of the GA. Graded 6.0, I've been meaning to get it pedigree labelled as well. I use to own a Weird Science 13, 2nd edition, from the White Mountain ped. 9.4. Graded it myself. At the time nobody wanted it. Took forever to sell. EC's weren't popular.
Can't go wrong with collecting EC Horror titles. That Vault 17 is a real cool. I want to pull the trigger on a vault of horror 26 when the right one comes around.
In answer to your question; I tend to gravitate to larger runs of books rather than the one monster key. For instance, I have the complete Vol 1 run of ASM except for #1. I do have a CGC 9.0 copy of the GRR and I’m happy with that. I also have a run of FF issues 37 to 73 that I could no doubt flip for a very big book but I enjoy having all of those classics rather than one standalone major key.
Wow. 3 LB Coles. Awesome pickups. My favourite Catman cover is 31; the wolves circling Catman, also with Dr. Macabre on the cover. But that skull cover is definitely up there. I also love Pedigrees. The history associated with the book is like a time capsule. That Captain Aero 26 would be on my keeper list. Right up there with Contact 12 as my favourite LB Coles of all time. Oh, and I had never even heard of the Baffling run. That book is impossible. 9.6 wow wow wow. Congrats on great pickups. Definitely prefer that to just a Suspense 3 in a 1.0
Hey Ryan great to see you. Happy Holidays. Some more fantastic books. I finally got one of my biggest Books X-Men 14 CGC 5.0 I thought I’d still have to wait a year or so but I found it for a good price & another one to the list. :)
That's a question I'm sure many collectors have asked themselves. I know I have, especially in recent years. I dropped a video on the subject of quantity vs quality maybe earlier this year. My stance has shifted a bit towards the middle as I've gotten into more expensive books. A decision I wish I'd made years ago. Also, it's always cool to see you show off Golden Age books. I'm curious about a lot of the crime, mystery and thriller anthologies. I'd like to read some of those to see how they told those stories back then. Happy hunting!
i had to send a golden age book back to cgc last week - error edition, entirely different book (title, etc) vs the cover. no notes, wasnt called out. lol, and the case was busted. yay.
Great haul my friend! Love those early golden age batman books in any grade! One day I'll have to dip my feet in that pool. My focus lately has been to own the top Marvel Silver age keys and I'm very close to that goal. I'm about 10 books away. To do that, I have to pass on a lot of books that I would typically want in my collection. My thought process is I can always get the mid tier books later. Happy Holidays to you and the family! Miss the Christmas tree in the background! 😃
Great topic and a remarkable haul! To your proposed question: massive key or multiple smaller keys.. I’d say it heavily depends on the keys involved. I’d take a mid grade Punch 12 over a few SA keys of the same value, but I’d also prefer that same stack of silver age over a massive high grade FF5.. love the book but not a basket I’d want to put all my eggs in when I can get the same book at a lower grade on almost any day of the week and be just as satisfied (if that makes sense?). I’m terrible at living up to this practice, but it is my preference 😅
Very tough decision, I guess it would ultimately come down to which books. As a Batman collector, love the ones you picked up but I have to say the covers on the other golden age books are amazing!
Very difficult to decide between one amazing grail or multiple great books. I’ve gone middle ground and only have 10 slabbed books in my collection. The problem is there are so many amazing comics to collect. One week I want bronze keys, then silver Spider-Man, then X-Men and loving the Silver surfer at the moment 🤦🏻♂️. That’s what makes our hobby amazing….
I am always of the mind of “buy everything.” Grails will always be there, and if you happen upon one at a great price of course pick it up. That being said I just bought Web of Spider-Man 118 and Inhumans 5….
I dont really have 30K for that big book, but the way I collect is I will spend $1000 on $2-$4K worth of comics sell off what I can that I dont want to break even then keep what I want. At the end of that I hope to have my $1000 back, hopefully some profit to pay some bills. 1-3K worth of comics for my collection. And then I repeat. So not 100% sure I will ever get that big book, but what I will have is many times the value of the grail in my collection that paid for itself.
That’s a great way to go. I know you had been selling through some of your pops as well to go after some grail comics. Been looking forward to an update video from you when you end up getting some of those comics you’ve been looking for.
I too like the pedigrees and the history/stories behind them. Picked up a Famous Funnies Edgar Church (Mile High) pedigree in the last ComicConnect auction. I'm also a fan of leopard seat covers. Then again, who isn't?
You realize the argument laid out “will I get bored with that early Captain America” is the same when I was in my 20’s thinking about marriage….Great vid though, loved it!
What's weird is..I just sent a book in with a spine split seal....I've seen some books as restored and others as a conserved grade, notating a spine split seal. I wouldn't mind a conserved grade on the book I sent in...but would not care for a resto grade. Not sure whats the difference in those cases.
Buying a grail or many keys depends on your objective. I buy books for the art and appreciation , I probably have not read a book for a very long time. When it comes to buying a book I look at the past four years of annual appreciation. I look for books that have appreciated between 25-30 % a year and art that I really like.
You have so many great books on your keeper list already. Will you ever extend the number of books on that list? It seems like the decision of which book(s) to drop would be nearly impossible when a new keeper arrives in your collection.
I found a Creepy #92 at a comic store for $50. I didn't see anything wrong on the cover. But didn't inspect the rest of the mag. Should I be looking for anything in particular for why it is so low in price?
I don’t really know the value of that comic off hand so it’s possible that’s simply what it’s worth. But first thing would be to use a pricing service like CovrPrice or GPA to get the approximate value. Then determine the grade. I have some grading videos that might help if you check my playlists. Eta Nick has a channel as well that has very extensive grading videos.
I would buy just the front cover of Suspense comics #3..That's about all I could afford. Lol. Grading question for you Ryan.On Vault of Horror #17 could CGC ever grade that as story incomplete on the fact the paper loss affects the wording. What if the paper loss were on the inside pages affecting the story? I always look forward to your vids.thanks.
When you send the Catman book in, does CGC keep the same ID number. I guess I am asking is this true for any book they reslab? I know they cannot keep the census accurate if you crack a slab and send the book in to grade it after cleaning and pressing.
Great googly moogly man!! How the hell do you afford these books man? Are you like a trust fund kid or something? Im just curious love you're channel 🤘
Definitely not a trust fund kid =). Most of it comes from selling comics at this point. That’s why I can’t keep everything. Most of the books I buy I have to sell to then buy other books. Something I’ve built up over a while of dedicating a lot of time and effort to buying and selling comics.
I have most of the major grails of the Silver and Bronze ages but I would trade them all for a mid-grade Action Comics #1 or Detective Comics #27.
years ago i found over 300 or more golden age cleaning an attic and you better believe there are more hoards out there to be found
I always love those big logo books especially detective and that astonishing is way cool! Nice pickup
That Startling Terror Tales 11 is tough as nails and Baffling’s colors look amazing. My highest Golden Age is a 9.0 Looney Tunes. Heritage has it but I still have an 8.5 Looney Tunes
Issue numbers for your Looney Tunes would be useful in this discussion.
VERY, very cool haul and some amazing Keeper books :)
Thanks!
Great haul with the Baffling leading the way.

Tough books to get. Cool LB Cole covers. Thanks for sharing
Wowie-Zowie! That is one great pile of paper and plastic. Thirty grand for such impressive comics is a bargain. IMO
I acknowledge that I am different from most comic book collectors in that I pay less attention to a book being a "key" or having characters who are to appear in an upcoming movie and focus more on the art of the cover and the story inside the book. That startling terror 11 🎉 bravo mate. One of my favorites all time. Very frickin cool 😎
Great cover for sure 👍. Thanks!

Wow so many books. I picked up a Cap #21 and ASM #50 in last comic connect auction. I bid on a bunch of marvel mystery but lost
They had a bunch of those marvel mysteries in that one.
My local comic shop has that Batman #12 right now raw for 4,000… I can’t do it. But really cool book for sure!
Nothing more fun than the hunt and acquisition.
For sure. Buying and then seeing for the first time in person is definitely a lot of fun.
Can't go wrong with collecting EC Horror titles. That Vault 17 is a real cool. I want to pull the trigger on a vault of horror 26 when the right one comes around.

Great collection of books. We have very similar tastes.

31 is my other favorite from the Catman run for sure. Love the detail on that cover.
That's a cool Catman book.....awesome.
Detective and E C. Comics would be my keepers.

really nice books. I completely understand the appeal of the Cole covers.
great video Ryan. Super interesting intro.
i had to send a golden age book back to cgc last week - error edition, entirely different book (title, etc) vs the cover. no notes, wasnt called out. lol, and the case was busted. yay.
I don’t think I have enough years left on this earth to ever become bored owning a Batman 1. 😁
I prefer fewer grail-level books for the PC but try to stick to $500-$3000 as the sweet spot for anything I'm planning to resell.

The tree is up again =). Just in a different room. 🎄
“Competing For Eyeballs“ sounds like a story William Gaines ok’ed
Awesome haul Ryan! Congrats!

A comic isn’t the same as a person =). A static piece of paper, art, car, etc are relatively easy to get bored with over time.
@@AutomaticComics very true. But I was 24. Not much thinking going on back then. 22 yrs later and I’d say I made the right choice.
Man, I think I was bidding against you for that TMNT 2 9.6. If so you got that book for a great price (Heritage).

Maybe, never know 🤷♂️. I like trying to keep it small though.
If it’s me I would grab the big grail book by the horns and call it a day.. It’s about quality not quantity when I collect.
Nice books! Any estimate on what the Suspense 3 will sell for now that it’s (correctly) a green label?
Gonna keep my estimate to myself incase I decide to go after it =)
Does Turtles say 2nd print inside as well?
I found a Creepy #92 at a comic store for $50. I didn't see anything wrong on the cover. But didn't inspect the rest of the mag. Should I be looking for anything in particular for why it is so low in price?

CGC doesn’t designate books as incomplete anymore. But regardless, no they would never grade that as incomplete with a tape pull.
@@AutomaticComics I have several seemingly high grade comics with tape pulls and was wondering..Thank you for the help.
Is there a website for all Marvel Comics print runs. I collect ASM
Sidekick named Kitten? Kitten? Doesn’t exactly strike fear in the evildoers.
Not much different than Robin =)
Ha! That is true.
When you send the Catman book in, does CGC keep the same ID number. I guess I am asking is this true for any book they reslab? I know they cannot keep the census accurate if you crack a slab and send the book in to grade it after cleaning and pressing.

I’m selling all my slabs now for one major key
So they pulled the book from auction and now it’s coming back with a green label. Are you going to bid on it now?
Probably not. A little outside my budget at the moment.
The very first CGC labels were red, right?
The modern tier were red. So same style but red if they were moderns.
AF15 or bust for me
How did it get a 1.0 grade that should have been a .5 !!
A 1.0 is the correct grade for the book as a green label. It’s a complete married copy.
@@AutomaticComics You would know ! Have a great holiday
I thought I was going to to see an AF15 unboxing :(
🤔
Batman and robin beat up the rail workers bc they are non union! Lol
🤔 Union busters. Makes sense since he’s a billionaire 🤔.
sara daly comic book nerd girl she knows her comics
For sure 👍
CGC is a scam IMO.
Awesome books!
