Fernando Sor.

    Sor
If all you have is the etudes of Fernando Sor, you are missing a lot of wonderful music. Music for Two guitars, Recorded on LP vinyl by Angel records, (out of print for many years) featuring Guy Lukowski and Philippe Lemaigre. Is an amazing performance of some of the best guitar I’ve ever heard. Divertimento, Les deux amis, Lepremiere pas vers moi, Fantaisie, Souvenir de Russie. All performed flawlessly. But the recording didn’t stop there, it included some of Carulli’s work that I have heard nowhere else. Serenade, Lapolacca.
“Perhaps no single composer is due more credit than Fernando Sor for raising the guitar to its most glorious heights of expression. Even during his own lifetime, he was described as legendary, both as composer and instrumentalist. The respected nineteenth century critic Francious Joseph Fetis called him “the Beethoven of the guitar” in recognition of his phenomenal contribution to the literature and expressiveness of that instrument.
Sor was born on February 14, 1778, in Barcelona. Very little is known of his childhood, but at the age of 11 he became a student at the school of the monastery at Montserrat, not far from his home. There he studied with Anselmo Viola, and at 19 he produced and opera Telemaco Nell isola di Calipso, in Barcelona.
At about 30 years of age, he went to Madrid where he became court organist to the Duchess of Alba and guitar teacher to her daughter. During this period, he composed prolifically- string quartets, orchestral works, and songs, and also began making appearances as a guitar virtuoso.
It was at this point in his life that Napoleon’s army waged its Peninsula campaign, and young Sor was drawn to Bonaparte’s cause. Joining the French forces, he quickly advanced to the rank of captain, but with Napoleon’s defeat, Sor was forced to flee Spain, to which he was never to return.
He sought refuge in Paris in 1813, and there he became acquainted with Mehul and Cherubini. The persuaded him to continue his career as a concert guitarist, a novelty in France. His appearances met with great success. He also continues to compose, and his works were well received, he produced ballets at the Paris Opera: Cendrillon and Le Sicilien, ou I, Amour peintre.
Sor’s fame spread to England, and he was invited to London to join the court of the Duke of Sussex. Here again, he became a fashionable teacher, and was the only guitar player who ever appeared at one of the concerts of the Philharmonic Society.
The next stop on his international peregrinations was Russia. While in St. Petersburg, he was commissioned to compose a funeral march in honor of Alexander I, certainly a remarkable honor for a Spaniard and unquestionably a commentary on the regard in which he was held.
In 1828 he returned to Paris, and decided to settle there, although during his absence he had been replaced in public favor by new performers. Eleven years later, in 1839 he died there, in relative obscurity and poverty.
Sor’s frequently performed twenty studies hold a place of honor in the repertoire of every serious student of the guitar. At once, these studies reveal the enormous potential for beauty locked within the instrument, along with the poetic soul and inspiration of the composer.”

A wonderful performance of the Sor studies. I appreciate the fact that it was played and recorded in the frequency of that period which was 432 Hz. Really brings out the romantic harmonic tones. Sounds ok in standard 440 tuning, but it looses that warmth and melodic harmony.

I don't Like to Play 440 Hz , It's so High, too Stiff, too hard, too bright.
      But IT depends on strings...
You can't Play nicely with Gut Strings at 440 !!!

For those who are not aware, Sor didn't regard any of these pieces as qualifying for his definition of being studies. He was quite adamant about the differences in intent between Studies, lessons, exercises, method (and progressive pieces). You can read his definitions in his method.
Opus 6 and 29 are the only sets (not heard here) that he published under the title of studies.

Hi Liza. Fernando Sor is a fundamental piece in the development of the classical guitar. He lived more in the romantic era, but composed more in the classical era style. Himself was a guitar virtuoso, and composed for the guitar, that is une of the reasons his music sounds so natural. The "Lessons" or "Estudios" are mandatory for all the guitar beginners, he also composed complicated music.

If you want to play Classical Guitar, you have to play all of Fernando Sor's Etudes and all his compositions. There's no way around it. If fact, all of the "founding fathers" including Carulli and Giuliani and the rest. The Great Grandfather of all, of course, is Francisco Tarrega.

    • @Cabbycabbage
      @Cabbycabbage 5 років тому

Have to agree with you on your first sentence. What more could one want to learn to play. But to me the Great Grand Pa of your list would be Carulli. Such melodic simplicity at times and perfect manners with everything that he wrote that has come down to us given that he was not a product of what was later to be called romantic music. Having said that Sor does sure rock the ears even to this day! And what a great win we had in the Rugby today! I know it was at home but little ole Wales beating Italy to love was a great start to the six nations!
