Happy 4th of July!! What's the best 4th of July story you got?

I was never much into all the fireworks and stuff so not many stories really. Oh, this one is a little "R" rated. In the 1980's when I was in my 20's, a certain "white powder" that people loved to sniff all the time was the rage. One of my buddies sold this powder as sort of a side gig for his regular job. So are little group never had to pay for it. So, I was a truck driver in Manhattan this 4th of July and I delivered candy, soda and cigarettes' to all the bodegas and convenience stores. I had a delivery to an upscale deli near Central Park south on 8th ave. Ironically, not too far from the Bubba Gump store. But it wasn't there at the time. It was around 100 cases of soda, candy and cigarettes' that took more then ten trips to bring all that into the deli. The owner or manager was this youngish wise ass dude and he watched me bring all that soda in. Then when I was done, he told me it goes in the basement around back so I needed to pick it all up again and bring it there down these rickety old cement stairs. I was pissed because he clearly waited for me to bring it all in before he told me I brought it to the wrong place. He thought that was funny. I basically told him I wasn't going to do it and he could go f... himself. And I don't care if you call my boss or not. Well, one of the workers was his buddy and he told me he would help me bring it to the basement and then he would make it worth my effort. So I reluctantly agreed. Because my cheapskate boss would make it a royal pan for not kissing the customers butt. When we got it all downstairs, the friend took me into a back room and he had I have no idea how much coke laid out on a table. We had a ball the next 45 minutes or so and then I had to finish my rout. But It went by so fast it felt like I didn't even do it. LOL.

I think Jenny always loved Forrest, but because of the trauma she suffered from her dad's abuse, she never felt good enough for anyone, especally Forrest. So she spent her life always gravitating to abusive relationships and destructive behavior. It wasn't until little Forrest was born that she finally saw self-worth, but unfortunately a little too late. Her story is a tragic one.

It's an extraordinary toxic trait of narcissists to blame past abuse for their personal life decisions. Jenny was a terrible human being. I dislike that the movie tries to make it seem that she isn't responsible for every destructive choice she makes. At no point does she take any responsibility for her actions and she is never held accountable for the wave of destruction she leaves behind her. Forrest deserved so much better.

Let's be brutally honest here and not kid ourselves: what normal woman would be attracted to and choose to spend the rest of her life with a low IQ man-child like Forrest? Nobody will admit this to themselves or to others, but the answer is very very few if not any. The best Forrest could've hoped for is either someone like him or, if he were unlucky, a sociopathic gold-digger that would make his life a living hell.

Tom Hanks is such an amazing actor. The way he delivered that line when he found out he had a son "is he smart or.. or" and the facial expression he had.. it was one of the best moments of acting I've ever seen. I'm not even sure if the writer and director intended for it to be that way, or if Tom Hanks just made it so.

One of the best facts I learned from this movie was that Gary Sinise (LT. Dan), after playing a disabled veteran, dedicated the literal REST OF HIS LIFE up to the present to help Disabled Vets with the Gary Sinise Foundation. Vets seriously don’t get the respect and help they deserve. There’s a huge difference in the brain of a vet compared to that of a civilian. They’ve been wired differently and most who’ve served combat tours have a hard time adjusting back to normal life. Why can’t we be more connected as a society to the people who risk their lives to protect us? In my opinion, we should bring back the draft. Way too many 🐱 in our younger generations of the west.

I am officially an old guy. A lot of the historical references here will be lost on you. You caught the Elvis thing pretty quick. The football coach at Alabama was BearBryant, one of the greatest. When Forrest shows his wound to LBJ it is funny because there was a famous incident where LBJ showed the press his scar from having his Gall bladder removed. When China was closed off to the West, the process of opening things up began with Henry Kissinger and “ping pong diplomacy.” Hurricane Carmen was a real event. John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Watergate, the running craze, there are too many to list.

A great movie and a great study on how people deal with trauma. Jenny, Forrest, and Lt. Dan. The biggest battles we will ever fight are with ourselves. Forrest never had that internal chatter and second guessing. He took everything literally and didn't assign negative connotations to what he was experiencing.

      @Istanbul0687 Рік тому +1

Yet Forrest didn't have the same trauma as Jenny or Lt. Dan. I feel like Forrest, though he had trauma, was poised to do better because he was able to overcome them more easily (i.e his legs as a kid) yet Jenny can't have her SA removed and Lt. Dan couldn't get his legs back (until wayy at the end when prosthetics finally were viable).
I feel like if the moral of the story is some sort of pro "grit" or "hardiness" aspect to life then I think that isn't very helpful given the uniqueness of each character's path in life. I think of course the message is that, throughout history, everyone goes through trauma, and people respond to it in different ways. Not one is necessarily better or worse (because each character didn't live the life of the other so we don't know how they would have responded), but we all walk around with our own baggage and our own history.
We really should walk away here with an empathy for people's experiences, whether they have bad outcomes (Jenny), mostly lucky outcomes (Forrest), or bad-to-good outcomes or finding peace (Lt. Dan).

Hey Jon Engqvist! Forrest Gump is 1 of those movies that never gets old for me! Whenever I watch it, I just find that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long. And despite it being a fictional story, I still find it to be very inspirational, and it has moments that I think most people can relate to on an emotional level. And Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (Even though Forest might not have Autism, I think him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my UA-cam channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique.
If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to that video: ua-cam.com/video/Or-sIiNANYg/v-deo.html
If you don't check it out, no worries at all! I won't be offended! But Thank You So Much in advance if you do see it! I hope you Have a great day today, Jon Engqvist! Please Stay Safe and Stay Awesome! 🙂🙂🙂

Actually caused a lot of terror and fear in society as a whole, people would get fired from their jobs, kids expelled from school. I can honestly say, this is one of my all time favorite movies. It just has so much in it and it is very well acted. Before I watch, I just want to comment, Jenny either died from AIDS or Hep C. I hear in the book it was Hep C but I never read the book so. Also, I feel Jenny wasn't being bad to Forrest by leaving him. I think she was trying to save him from her own "F..ed up" Life. She felt Forrest was too good and pure for her and didn't want to drag him down with her. So thats why she kept leaving because she clearly loved him. When I was about Forrests' age when he got hit with the rock, a kid hit me in the ear with a rock during a "rock war" once too. I ended up getting an infection cause you didn't take your kid to the doctor in the 60's for every little bump and bruise. I lost like 5% hearing in that ear but to be honest I don't even notice much unless I pout ear buds on. But it's better than what my much much older brother did. he shot his best friend in the eye with a bee bee gun when they were like 12. It hit the white part of his friend's eye so he didn't lose all of his site. And no, you didn't sues people back then very often either. Vince, thats suppose to be Bear Bryant at the football games. So glad that you did get Jenny. I think Jenny was the second most important person in the movie. The movie showed her life from basically the same time as it started with Forest. [some reactors get Jenny wrong, allot of reactors love Forest so much they don't like Jenny] She truly loved Forest and had the same deep down kind nature as he. She was the only one to befriend him on the bus at the very start to show her good nature. [and continued to be his good friend through high school, imagine how hard that was with all the bullies still on Forrest's case, so to speak] Others will comment on the trauma she would have had to deal with [an obviously very deep wounding of her] so I won't go into that, just point out that they [as the two main subjects of the plot] were basically two kind hearted and worthy people from two different upbringings. She talks of how their lives are so different. [recognizing her flaws] She repeatedly lets Forrest know she Does Love Him [always in a sad tone, knowing she could hurt the one true constant good in her life if she let him into hers then] And not wanting to hurt the only true one she did love would say "You don't want to marry me" [imagine how it must have hurt her to have to tell him that!]. She had to fix herself [with no help from anyone in those days -totally on her own to heal herself] before worthiness could take place. Forrest helped everyone! And the way he helped her was finally to let her find the first true lovemaking she had ever done after she recovered at his house. [her choice finally to see it's OK to have a good man watch over her as she obviously made the best decision of her life to "clean up" -with all the sleeping that was needed] When she agreed with Forrest that he would make a good husband on those stairs it led to the final "fix" that happened when she would have felt so badly when he thought she didn't love him. She finally allowed herself to express to him [and herself] the lovemaking she had never known and was always afraid to accept. It was real. It was good. [for both of them] And it was time to leave [yes, once again] but this time Not Running. It was time to make herself a good clean life without his help to be sure she wouldn't hurt him to be with him. [remember she was really new to the clean life, with just those few weeks or so clean so far] She proved it to herself and It isn't clear in the movie but she may well have written the letter for him to come before she found out her condition [he was running for years] and either way I believe she would have contacted Forrest about his child even if she had not come down with Hepatitis C. Remember when she left the last time she would not have known she was pregnant yet, just that she needed to be sure she was worthy to live up to the love she felt for him that night of her first true loving. Two deep down Good People, with very different lives who none the less helped each other throughout their life's even as differently as it went for them. One finding it very easy to let the deep-down good person show, the other struggling greatly to let that nature show. Together it showed in both of them easily. It was a true love story from beginning to end. That's all I got to say about that.

Hey Jon Bruton! WOW! You make many great points in your comment here that I had Not considered before, and it was ended with the perfect last sentence ("That's all I got to say about that"). LOL! Forrest Gump is a movie that when I saw it at a younger age, I definitely didn't understand how Jenny was also "running" but Not in the literal sense like Forrest did. I guess the contrast between Jenny's path and Forrest's path is what makes this story so special! And Yes, the people who hate Jenny should really direct the monster label to her abusive father instead....As for this movie itself, I often connect with it personally because my brother actually has Autism (Even though Forest may not have Autism, I think him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled).

When you think of Jenny as the feather that opens and closes the movie it changes how you think of the film. This isn't a story about Forrest but rather about Jenny told through the eyes of Forrest. Forrest kept the feather in the book so he could look at it, admire its beauty, and touch it from time to time, just like the passing moments that Jenny came in and out of his life. When the feather comes into the story so to does she and when the feather flies away, never to be seen or touched again the film ends. That's not because it's a logical spot to end because a biopic would see it through until Forrest dies, but because Jenny is gone.

One of my earliest memories was in 1st grade, and it was veterans day- so we were watching a video in class about a mom and son going to a war memorial, and seeing a war veteran with no legs at the memorial. My teacher started talking to us about the video, and when she asked who the man in the wheelchair was (expecting “a veteran” or something like that) I said “ITS LIEUTENANT DAN!!” All excited and happy because I love this movie and always have apparently- and she was SHOCKED that a kid that age would have watched that movie and comprehended/paid attention to it enough to remember a character by name and appearance. I think that’s what’s so special about forrest gump (both the character and the movie) he knows so much and he teaches such important life lessons, but he says it in a way that makes sense to anyone and everyone- no matter their age or iq. It’s really special that there’s a movie like that, so everyone can learn from it and grow through the lessons they learn.
I know for a FACT this movie will always be a favorite of mine.

I don’t know if you noticed something; few if any do.
When Dorothy picks up Forrest for school, she’s smoking a cigarette. Such was the way in the 50s/60s.
When she picks up Little Forrest, she’s chewing gum. I’d bet it’s smoking-quitting nicotine gum.
I think Zemeckis put it in there purposely. A nice touch.

A similar moment for me was when they were in DC with the Black Panthers, and Jenny’s boyfriend hits her. When the zero in on his face and show him slow-motion going to confront him…. The fury you see in his eyes is almost palpable. THOSE couple of seconds alone earned his Oscar…. Plus the film editing Oscar.

Hey General-Cromwell! Forrest Gump is such a special movie for many reasons, but I think it is VERY impressive how it balances many different genres of film! Fun reaction! Def one of the greats! This movie is even more interesting when you view it through a historical lens, a narrative that is really a love letter to American culture and American exceptionalism. Forrest and Jenny are conduits used to move along the major cultural and social events America went through in the 20th century. It starts in the Jim Crow south moving through the civil rights movement, the war in Vietnam, hippie and counter culture, China opening to the west and through to the dawn of tech. Forrest and Jenny are also metaphors. Forrest is American values personified, with a pure heart and a tough work ethic he'll always triumph, the ideal "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" kind of guy. Jenny, on the other hand, is a metaphor for Americas rapidly changing society. Jenny is restless and unbound to tradition. She quickly moves from one counter culture fad to the other (hippies, the Black Panthers). Never stable and never wanting to settle. In the end Jenny dies of AIDS (according to the films screen writer). Jenny and Forrest are two sides of the same coin.

I think because of her childhood trauma, Jenny not only internally thought less of herself (the only man who likes me isn't smart enough to realize). It's also that she was afraid that after sleeping with Forrest, that she had become an abuser like her father-- taking advantage of someone unable to consent. It wasn't until the last months of her life that she realized that Forrest really could and did love her.
