Another series well defined by its music, and is also noted to have been a major source of inspiration for many well known composers these days when they were kids, is music from the first seven seasons of Thomas and Friends. Most of its music from that seasonal range is iconic, and has its own motifs you can hear amazingly well. Even as the music evolved to be, I guess ‘shorter’, you could still hear much of the original theme inside the shortened newer themes. It is really sad when, season 8 onwards, they changed the music (while still catchy as the original) sounded more ‘kid-friendly’ than the prior tracks. Certain themes that many say is iconic enough to be known without prior knowledge about Thomas, are the following; - Thomas and Friends opening theme - Thomas the Tank Engine’s theme - Edward the Blue Engine’s theme - Henry the Green Engine’s theme/The Flying Kipper - Gordon the Big Engine’s theme - James the Red Engine’s theme - Percy the Small Engine’s theme - Toby the Tram Engine’s theme - Devious Diesel’s theme - The Breakdown Train’s theme - Runaway theme Look up and listen to any one of these pieces of music, and they themselves tell stories about what’s going on about either the scene or the characters themselves. Thomas’ character theme is joyful and gives hints that he makes mischief like a young child (hence why most kids gravitate towards him). Edward’s theme has a nice bounce to it that hints he’s very kind and helpful (practically defining to who he is). Gordon’s is fast paced and has a kick fitting for one who is said to be “the biggest and proudest engine of all of Sodor”. James’s theme is very jazzy and smooth that tells you he’s quite vain and arrogant, but reliable when it counts. Devious Diesel’s theme has a slickness to it that immediately tells you he’s not someone you should trust. Anything from Thomas and Friends seasons 1 to 7 you can pick apart, and there were certain cues from Dragon Ball Super I’ve noticed could be traced back to our little blue tank engine on how to tell us what’s happening or who this character is through music alone… Plenty of UA-camrs have made plenty of covers/remixes of music from Thomas and Friends that sound incredible, so it should tell you the power that music has on people…

I'm not one for OSTs, but Dragon Ball is the one franchise that I consistently come back to the soundtrack for. I think that's pretty indicative of something.
Naruto also has a great soundtrack. Although I do generally prefer dragon ball over Naruto, Naruto's soundtrack is indisputably greater and has more variety.
One of the great fusions of leitmotif was Piccolo's Theme X Makafushigi Adventure in Dead Zone which got interwoven so well pumping up Goku and Piccolo's teamwork.

Honestly, I love this video, as I love music theory. That said, I would be curious to get your impressions on the overall Faulconer score of English Z and the Menza score of English GT. I feel going into the Faulconer Score would tie back to what you stated in this video, with music early on being "placed throughout" without tying into anything, but having actual leitmotifs used later on, particularly in the Buu saga.
This is officially my favorite video of yours Mark, which is saying a lot. I would LOVE to see more dragon ball music analysis videos from you in the future!
DBS has an amazing soundtrack. Don’t forget some of the early soundtracks either. Some great ones are Golden Frieza’s theme, Time to Strick Back, Birth of a God, and Earth’s End.
I am actually pleasantly surprised that you focused on most tracks of the ost without mentioning Ultimate battle or Unmei no hi(Day of fate). It truly shows that this video was about the subtle music that people almost always forget. Great job.
I won't lie. The ending of DBGT makes me cry. Hell, just seeing Goku, who's been a hero to me, a black kid who was bullied by both family and friends growing up, saying goodbye makes me cry.
All I want is Falcolner back. That’s what made Z such a phenomenon for me. Every bit of that score resonates with me deeply and I listen to it regularly while exercising. Some of my favorites being Perfect Cell’s theme, super sayian 3 transformation, and especially Hells Bells. I’m also a fan of the Heavy Metal soundtracks they put in the DBZ movies. I guess I’m a product of my age/environment but I wish we’d get some of that back as Dragonball just doesn’t feel the same to me without it
In all fairness; it’s an insert song. The video focuses on themes that share motifs with eachother and, by nature, and as is certainly the case with Ultimate Battle, insert songs don’t really do that most of the time

The over the top voice acting and phenomenal sound design, not to mention the great artistic choices by David pro. all reflect Araki’s vision on the series perfectly. Hell, the old part 3 movies explain perfectly how boring JoJo could be if treated like a generic shonnen. So yeah, the manga is good, but beginning with the anime will always be the better option for this series. (Not to mention the tragic case of confusing ass paneling and scenes that affect parts 5-7.
@@danielz-v4083 Yeah I love how in the old part 3 movie they skip all the bad to average/boring episode.
ikr jojo has more total chapters and over 100 of them are monthly
@@theflashgordon193 maybe, but that’s not what I meant. Like, compare Iggy and Polnareff vs Vanilla Ice in the movie to the anime ver.
Both are good and interesting, but they have a VERY different style and vibe, and the anime’s version is definitely the one that is more loyal to Araki and to what makes JoJo so unique and bizarre.
I can't hear leitmotif without hearing Sideways voice saying it tbh

Dragon ball music is probably the main reason why such a show is able to stick with us. All those moments that are linked to music. You hear one chord and you instantly know what moment that linked to.

Certain themes that many say is iconic enough to be known without prior knowledge about Thomas, are the following;
- Thomas and Friends opening theme
- Thomas the Tank Engine’s theme
- Edward the Blue Engine’s theme
- Henry the Green Engine’s theme/The Flying Kipper
- Gordon the Big Engine’s theme
- James the Red Engine’s theme
- Percy the Small Engine’s theme
- Toby the Tram Engine’s theme
- Devious Diesel’s theme
- The Breakdown Train’s theme
- Runaway theme
Look up and listen to any one of these pieces of music, and they themselves tell stories about what’s going on about either the scene or the characters themselves.
Anything from Thomas and Friends seasons 1 to 7 you can pick apart, and there were certain cues from Dragon Ball Super I’ve noticed could be traced back to our little blue tank engine on how to tell us what’s happening or who this character is through music alone…
Plenty of UA-camrs have made plenty of covers/remixes of music from Thomas and Friends that sound incredible, so it should tell you the power that music has on people…
Pokimixr is so damn talented, he deserves more recognition as a musician
Yee that fused zamasu theme was badass
I really gotta take a page out of his book
Dan Dan always was a sad song though. It is in major scale but it still has a sad/emotional subtext. That's why the last scene in GT hits super hard.

Naruto also has a great soundtrack. Although I do generally prefer dragon ball over Naruto, Naruto's soundtrack is indisputably greater and has more variety.
Personally, I'm really into the title sequences from GT. Dan Dan and Don't You See! are two of my favourites from the DB anime.
One of the great fusions of leitmotif was Piccolo's Theme X Makafushigi Adventure in Dead Zone which got interwoven so well pumping up Goku and Piccolo's teamwork.
The Dragon ball video games also have criminally underrated musical scores which surprisingly mesh really well with the anime series itself

I want to observe that Piccolo's Jr Leifmotif already plays a lot during the King Piccolos arc, and its meant to be used as the high tension combat music. Mark: "the jojo series will be much shorter than the one piece"
