- If you want to experience and feel the Shinkansen's speed and power from the outside, the best way is to observe it from a smaller Shinkansen station that is not a stop for the Nozomi Super Express. At smaller Shinkansen stations, the two middle tracks will be used as passing or car pool-like lanes that the Nozomi can fly through because it does not stop at the smaller Shinkansen stations. I was at Shizuoka Station where only the Hikari (semi-express) and Kodama (local) Shinkansens stop, so the Nozomi Super Express could fly through the station at speeds up to 280 kilometers an hour (175 mph). I could literally feel the vibration and intense energy coming off the Nozomi as it passed by in a blur. Experience for yourself, the true power and speed of the Shinkansen!

I love the whole train system in Japan, but rather than the Shinkansen, I really enjoy all the diversity of all the other rail services, with the varied special lines, sightseeing panorama cars, and all the small private regional train and subway companies. What's cool is that if I remember correctly, you can also buy tickets that just give you access to the station itself, to visit the platforms for trainspotting or just shops and restaurants inside.
The more times I visit Japan the more I get excited about the train system. Love riding the Shinkansen 🚄

Love the shinkansen! I remember when I had my back to the tracks while talking with friends. Suddenly a shinkansen flew by! Scared the heck out of me!
My friends joked that I had to hold on to my heavy backpack since the suction almost dragged me away. It was one of THE most memory experiences standing there when the Shinkansen goes by & doesn't stop at the platform you're on.
Japan rail system is the best in the world . Shinkansen is so special , everyone who visit Japan should get the Jrpass to travel around japan with Shinkansen .

11/10 for enthusiasm. One thing I miss now I'm a resident and not a visitor, the Japanese Rail Pass. Can be great value if you are doing a lot of travelling around the country. We used it on a small ferry once.
And the thing is you don't even need to have an expensive ticket to ride the shinkansen in order to see them wizz by. Just get a station platform ticket that lets you go to the platform to take pictures. This is what train otaku in Japan often do.

Having made numerous trips on the Tokaido Shinkansen, mostly using Hikari trains, I have to agree. The timings are tightly choreographed. I remember reading somewhere that the tolerance for timing is 9 seconds between Tokyo and Osaka. Being on a Hikari and thundering past a stationary Kodoma is interesting. Even more so is when you meet a train coming on the opposite direction; you can feel the slight sideways shift due to the air pressure. The JR pass is brilliant. On one trip it cost me around $500 Australian. I clocked up well over $2000 dollars worth of trips. I'm hoping to get back next April. Your videos have been informative, thanks.
High Speed trains in Europe are pretty good.
My first experience of a shinkansen speeding past a station blew my mind! I love Japanese rail transit. I wish we had something like that in the USA.
Hello Mike, I know that maybe you will not see this comment but I'm very grateful for your videos, thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinion on so many interesting matters regarding Japan. After saying this I'm going to dare to ask you for something , I'm from Mexico and visiting Japan has been my dream for like 5 years now, I'm planning to go in December but since your last video on the topic (when you mention that the borders will open on October 11) I have been looking for all the details about how to enter Japan after the reopening of the borders, I checked in the Ministry of Health webpage that you shared with us but I think that the information there might be a little bit outdated (since many of the documents mention early September dates) and I have gotten even more confused or insecure about how to enter Japan after the borders open, do you think it's possible (if it's not too much to ask) for you to upload a video after the reopening (or before if possible) explaining a little bit about what Japan is requesting from tourists to enter the country and how to present it? (I saw that there is an app where you need to upload documents but again I'm not sure if that information is outdated) I know I might be asking too much but I don't know where else to go to request for help on this matter, I hope you read my comment and if not it was worth the try, thank you again Mike for creating such amazing content, lots of love from Mexico!
The first shinkansen in the USA should be 2035 or it was 2045 and that will be in Texas unless the contract fell through.

You will still have to wear a mask anytime you are indoors. I think if you have pocket wifi, that should be fine to connect with your phone. Yes, do download and complete the MySOS app before you get to the airport. It takes a few hours, sometimes days to have the color change from red to blue. You want to be sure to have it all done and the color change on the app before you leave.
