I too love it when gun manufacturers arm the pawns of the state with tools they don’t allow us to have. If every gun manufacturer took BCM and Barrett’s stance on selling guns to law enforcement and not arm them with guns the citizens can’t own, you’d see real change in gun laws. But I guess money is more important.

No reason cops can't rock 9mm carbines these days. They can be the size and weight of a water flask, just about. The visual alone will deter many would-be bad guys.

No new firearms can be added to the CA roster unless they are capable of microstamping. This has been the case for several years now. The issue is with CA law and not the manufacturers.
I'd add the FN America quit making the entire FNS line in .40, 9x19mm calibers. They had so many fails, LE agency 🚔 complaints, FN-A just said, that's it! 🚫 ....
Keep in mind the LAPD nor FN prohibits CA citizens from buying one of these - that is the fault of the idiots that CA voters elect.

Well with the hit ratios of most LE I'm surprised they weren't looking into the 30 Super Carry. That way they wouldn't have to deal with all that nasty excessive 9mm recoil...
The new 30 doesn’t recoil a lot less. The main advantage is +2 rounds compared to 9mm.

It does make me less likely to buy a 509, certainly.
Unfortunately this was negotiated at the city level, not the state.
In the realm of "never gonna happen", FN could use this opportunity to provide an exceptionally good deal to all CA law enforcement agencies based off the LAPD model, and in exchange, could negotiate having the 509 added to the CA roster without all the usual required nonsense. They would save the state money by offering discounted pricing to such a large number of agencies, and in turn be the only modern pistol commercially available to the general CA civilian market. Everyone wins.
Unfortunately, CA wants an unarmed population, so they'd never negotiate something so obvious.
So, this is what 'defund-the-police' looks like. Who da thunk it.

The owner of my favorite FFL carries one after trying every polymer handgun under the sun.
I have a FN 509 tactical. Best optic mounting system of any manufacturer, doesn’t even require thread locker on the screws (an O-ring keeps the recoil lugs tensioned against the optic). I will however upgrade the trigger.

I have this pistol and it has been excellent so far. The pistol comes with a "right hand only" mag catch, which I swapped out for a factory FN ambi mag catch. Easy swap, and the part is less than $20. I thought it should have all ambi from the factory, which is the case with the slide catch, but it is a minor point for this southpaw.
The pistol is quite affordable, coming in under $700 with excellent suppressor height night sights. On the other hand, spare factory magazines are pricey. Around $50 for the 17 round mag and $65 for the extended 24 round magazine. They are well built, but a real PITA to fully load when new.
Overall, great pistol.

Not only are they exempt, half of them buy off roster weapons and resell them at triple mark up. Go look up how much you can get for a Gen 4 or 5 glock in CA

This looks like a great pistol, and surprisingly affordable, at least in areas where you can legally buy and own one. I have a couple FN pistols and they are solid. I would expect more of the same here.

Yeah the trigger on the 509 is pretty bad from factory.
The trigger on that example was pretty decent. Short, positive reset. Reasonably crisp trigger. Not match by any means, but reasonably good for a production gun.

Wow. I learned so so nothing about this gun. Oh, I did get the slide go back and trigger pulled 43 times. That was totes amaze!
The regular MRD compact is the same thing. I bought one and replaced the striker assembly with a better assembly and firing pin that will not chip as well from APEX and a Lepould Delta point pro. Shoots good. The trigger sucks but it's now starting to butter up a bit after five hundred rounds.
Shocked the striker didn’t break when you dry fired it. Did they put an apex in it for the show?
Yeah, the striker shattered in my 509 while dry firing with a snap cap. I put an Apex in it and now I can trust it again.
@@nickcivis mine broke in half at the range. A FB poll showed it broke 10% of the time and that was with 50% changing it before it broke.

When the MRD Mid gets this trigger, boom, new favorite. I applaud FN for being truly optics ready out the box, BUIS already installed, as is M&P 2.0. Everyone else makes us scramble for aftermarket sights or better mounting plates, annoying as hell.
Honestly this gun feels amazing when you shoot it the only thing I would do personally is take the scope off and just use the iron sights 🔥

If you get this specific model, there is NO need to upgrade to the APEX trigger or APEX firing pin (this model is already upgraded). Now LAPD just needs the Scar 17.

The California Prosecutor and ATF need to get on this! The LAPD with an off roster pistol and more than a 10 round capacity! The LAPD had money to burn with these fancy new guns, and I see the firefighters begging for money at street lights to guy basic supplies.
Bottom line, if you're not a Cop, a Peace Officer more specifically, you can't get an off-roster gun. So instead of complaining, be a Cop. Lol

Would’ve been nice had you spent some more time on the trigger since that seemed to be the only difference between the civilian model. FN is not known for their triggers unfortunately so hope they put in a better flat face trigger than the LS Edge.

Its FN’s flat face trigger with the striker from the LS Edge. Those are the only 2 changes.

My Brother in-law had (has) a fn 509...it blew up, for the most part, and fn has done nothing but stone-wall him on replacing it...good luck to the LAPD.
Very happy to see red-dot equipped pistols becoming standard among LEO agencies. Because users do not have to take their focus off their intended target, this technology can prevent many civilian and otherwise-unnecessary deaths. I predict this will become as common as mounted lights within 10 years and we will see a deluge of LE-trade-in non-optic-ready pistols.

It seems like law enforcement personnel are always in a position to acquire the most high-priced, and superior firearms at tax payers expense while, as we have seen, the constituency scrambles to obtain enough money to purchase arms that are less desirable amongst those employed in our 3 branches of government. If we are mature enough to place them in positions of public trust then we, as the public, should be mature enough to own the type of firearms that they have become privy to.
Only one minor detail missing - the pull weight of the trigger.
Should we assume it is the expected "solid, battle proven 7+ lbs, right out of the box" or for lawyer reasons it was improved to 12 lbs, to match the good old, double action revolver pull of revolvers the real policemen had in the past?

Spoke to an FN CSR the Rep in the video gave misinformation. The LAPD 509 will not be made to the public and all 509s will continue to use the same striker and trigger.
This is unacceptable as LE are civilians as well. This shows who FN America seems to favor in the US. I would recommend Sig Sauer or Glock as the support the 2A

I think FN is a good company that makes high quality stuff, but they need to NOT mention LAPD at anytime, ever when promoting their pistols and firearms.
