Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology and known for the Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma”, draws parallels between the rise of social media and the current AI boom, warning of the dangers of unchecked technological advancement.
“It’s so brave… that you have that battle cry of, ‘Guys, let’s let’s be mindful of what we’re doing!’”, Jacob Burda (Hubert Burda Media) observes in his introductory remarks.
In this powerful DLD Munich 2025 presentation, Harris argues that the “race for engagement” that drove social media’s negative consequences is mirrored in the current “race to recklessness“ in AI development.
Speed and market dominance are prioritized over safety and societal impact, Harris argues. Using the analogy of a Jenga tower, Harris illustrates how AI simultaneously builds incredible capabilities while destabilizing the foundations of society.
That doesn’t mean Harris is blind to AI’s potential to do good. He highlights that AI is capable of both groundbreaking advancements like drug discovery and harmful outcomes like the creation of new toxins or the spread of disinformation.
This duality presents a critical dilemma, he notes: how to harness AI’s potential while mitigating its inherent risks?
