18:15 Dixie wades across the creek two more times to get her camera and go down the trail again. Bringing us along is not easy. But, we appreciate the effort. Thanks for all your work.
What makes you think she was the one who had to go back?
That's what I was thinking. I think she should send him across to get the shot of her crossing, to prevent the extra work.
You are spot on. She is really good at her craft and very likeable. I started watching her before I quit solo hiking when she started the PCT. She handled the whole Dollar General deal with poise but concern. I'm glad she still tests products.
My dog Indie is even drawn to her voice and waits for a glimpse of one of her dogs.
@@fyisense9312 what happened with Dollar General?
@@donkeysaurusrex7881 You have to go back and watch it. Those of us that watch her or know her assume everyone knows her character. If you haven't seen it go back and watch it. I'm laughing right now.
That ground ice is neither hoarfrost nor rime ice. The ice crystals on the ground are known as needle ice and are formed when ground temp is above freezing and air temp is below freezing moisture is drawn out of the ground and freezes into those crystalline needle like structures. I agree, those structures can be very beautiful. As a kid I used to love watching frost form on the kitchen windows at home. It is really intriguing to watch it creep across the glass. Rime ice is essentially frozen fog.
Ice nerd.
@@kublakhan2342 👍 Naturally inquisitive and enjoy learning about the natural world around us.
“Like you’re gonna steal something from a Dollar General” LOL still so sorry that happened to you, loving the content :)
She has 2k in gear on her back, but yeah she’s stealing rom the dollar store lmao, that was really dumb
Jordan obviously we all know Dixie isn’t a thief... but a lot of people who steal have plenty of money...
JOSEF BORG I believe Biden’s niece (the daughter of his very wealthy brother) was busted for shoplifting a few years ago as well... they feel entitled and sadly never have any real consequences...
@@jordan2042 I understand the point, but the average store clerk can't tell the difference between $400 of gear and $2000 of gear. Why would they unless a hiker themselves.
You of course handled it like a champ Dixie, with dignity and grace. I’m sure it was upsetting to be falsely accused. Nothing but kudos to you 🤗
It was fanboy dream come true to randomly get to meet you while you all were hiking by our house. I am only sorry that my better half wasn’t there to keep me from being so awkward. If she had been there, she would have reminded me that I didn’t have to yell you from halfway down the driveway and you would have gotten hot chocolate and homemade cookies. 😂. I hope you both enjoyed the rest of your adventure!
A few hammock tips. You can use a ridge line with slip knots on it so your tarp can slide back and forth and be taunter and sag less between the trees. You can use soft shackles or carrabiners at the tree end of your straps. This way you can clip your strap and pull out your strap and Hammock and walk to the other tree. Welcome to hammocks I am glad you gave it a second chance. :)
Lol....all the shade you were throwing at the Dollar General had me cracking up. So sorry about your ordeal at the store! Love the video!!!
Fer real.... imagine, a Dollar Store, worried sick over a potential shoplifter! It's a fricken dollar! Of course, we all know you would never do something as to steal allergy meds... what cracks me up, is when ya hear about someone actually robbing a Dollar General... if they do get away with it, their haul is not gonna be any more then a handful of one dollar bills and some pocket change...
That shot coming up from the frosted trees was absolutely gorgeous.
The waterfalls are exquisite. I'm 66, and I always wanted to hike the trail, but not alone! You are AMAZING
You, more than most women, must appreciate the women who were part of the early pioneers who made up the pilgrimage of the Oregon Trail. They survived the wilderness with no REI lightweight camping gear, had babies and there were no periodic resupply opportunities. High tech water purification systems... what's that? Satellite GPS emergency devices... not even in your dreams. You could have been one of them!!! One positive, they didn't have Dollar General stores :)
I think about them ALL THE TIME ♥️🙌🏻
So true. The original gangsters of thru hiking. Talk about some tough cookies 🍪.
@@kdavis4910 Well-spoken and great command of the English language
@@manfredseidler1531 thank you.
It's called "needle ice". There's also Hoarfrost, Frost Flower and Hair Ice.
I know as hoar frost
@@rembrandtshadows hoarfrost is the stuff that forms on the outside of a surface. Needle ice is the stuff that forms the long crystals just under the surface of the ground.
My son uses a red carabiner on the head end of his hammock. RED rhymes with HEAD. So it's easy for him to figure out which end should be higher. You could also use red paracord or even a red hair tie to tie on that end. 🙂
The color coding definitely helps with setup. My Blackbird hammock has two different colored drawstrings on the stuff sack for that differentiation. I leave my stuff sack bunched up on one end of the hammock once deployed.
Not sure about Warbonnet, but Dream Hammocks will let you pick your colors for the continuous loops at each end of the hammock. That's how I distinguish head end from foot end. A buddy of mine uses whoopie slings of two different colors. It's all about getting it right. :-)
Generally you want your head slightly lower than your feet.
Yes! My hammock has a red drawstring on the head-end of the double stuff sack. Red rhyming with head is exactly how I remember it too 😂
Sounds like you were enjoying the hammock! You are correct, if you ditch the sleeping pad, you will sleep more comfortable. Hope to see you continue learning with the hammock!
Sleeping pad is definitely not made for hammocks, it tends to wrap around me in single-layer hammock and slips to side in double-layer one. I think a full-length underquilt will be more comfortable. Of cause, you cannot use underquilt when sleeping on a ground, but in a woodland good places for hammock occurs more often than a good place for tent.
My hammock has a built in bug net, too...when it's cold, I turn the hammock upside down, so the bug net is between the hammock and the underquilt...it's out of the way, like that, and not as vulnerable to wear and tear so it's intact when I need it in the summer time.
I'm going to have to try this! I was contemplating a new hammock because the bug net just gets in the road in winter, good shout partner!

I've been enjoying the classical music recently - nice twist, Aaron! And it went well with the beautiful views and the classy mimosas :)
Kudos for getting your hammock set up in the dark as a newbie. Many folks see tons of trees along a trail and assume you can set up anywhere. Site selection in a hammock can be tough as well.
You know Dixie, I think that was the best hiking, hiking with a dog, gear test, aggressive dog, hammocking, and tent exposure video series I've ever seen, it was fun, well done, loved it. Happy trails.
Nice Logo Green...
Dixie, your cinematography is always outstanding, especially given you’re always inflight and have limitations of what you can carry. Just watching your scenery with music is always so enjoyable. You just have a very good eye and perspective on the nature that surrounds you.
well said
Totally agree with you
The hair on the bottle at the end made me shed a tear... good furry friends are always with us even when they've passed on
I had the exact same reaction. I’m having trouble seeing the screen to type from getting all misty-eyed. 🥲
Thank you for putting out such great content Dixie!!
Such good timing! I just bought my first hammock setup and now I’m even more excited to get out there and take it on the trail! Thank you so much for letting us watch you go through the learning curve.
Awesome! I can't wait to see your FT videos, I'm excited to see you hiking my 'home trail'
I see you're out there axe murdering chipmunks and robbing Dollar General's again then making that getaway at water crossings to throw the hounds off the scent 😊
Great move by the way Dixie!!!
Yeah, I was thinking that's what water crossings are for. When my net worth got close to a mil even though I still hiked, I thought if I could just get away with a $4.99 bottle of Alerest ...
lol
I heard that Dixie and company are on the F.B.I's Most Wanted list for her attempted Dollar General heist. Ha Ha Ha
Totally enjoyed your adventure on the Pinhoti Trail, congratulations on ticking off another hike and look forward to more adventure from you throughout 2021.
Great video! I'm glad that I could experience it thru you! Thanks!
I love that you are still taking the time to highlight the winter forest. It can be just as beautiful as a spring one! Thank you for sharing your journey!
Congratulations on this accomplishment! Thanks for sharing all the tips!
Congrats on completing your journey! And thank you so much for sharing your adventure. This was your first trail I got to watch you week to week rather than binging the entire trail you'd already completed. Makes me excited to watch your next one, and also to try backpacking myself this year! You are an inspiration.
I'm so stoked your doing the Pinhot trail. The skyway loop is going to be my first planned overnight back pack trip coming up. I've been so motivated and have learned soooo much watching your channel. Thanks so much for the fantastic info ... whoop whoop for the Alabama hiking ladles. 🥳🏕
Same here! not a lady but I’m excited to take my lady friend out there too!
Great video!!! Thank you for always putting out superb content!
Thanks for sharing its good to see you out again!
Salute - thanks for bringing us along.
I loved the digs on DG 😂. I still use a pad and underquilt for winter camping. Another awesome adventure!
I’ve been trying to be sweet 🙃
@@HomemadeWanderlust Dollar General sucks! There, I said it for ya.......😉👍
@@HomemadeWanderlust Well bless their sweet hearts! *grin*
@@HomemadeWanderlust where was the dollar general store that gave you a hard time?
Lastly, although I love having four seasons and each being beautiful in its own way, there is something special about the snow and ice that I love most. Beautiful stuff Dixie! And I love the music! Thank you for sharing.
Great video production - love the classy music! Glad you had a good experience in winter.
I don’t sleep in a regular bed at home, just a hammock. I’ve never liked using a sleeping pad in the hammock. I love my full length underquilt, and on really cold nights (the nights I sleep outside) I use a sleeping bag as a topquilt rather than my usual Thermarest Honcho Poncho... one day I want to buy a hammock-sleeping-bag (it’s a sleeping bag that goes on the outside of the hammock).
Loved the video. I find the trees that look right, then hang the tarp. I use the tarp as a guide to center the hammock under, and then stake the tarp out. Backpack clipped at the foot end by the carry strap, then I pull the bottom of the pack up and clip the hip belt over the ridge-line. It keeps it up out of the rain and stops it from swinging around in the wind at night. It took a couple of years for me to leave my full pad at home. Now I have a small torso pad (hips to shoulders) that I use as a foot pad with my partial underquilt. If its cold out, I double up my partial 20F underquilt with my full length 40F - toasty into the teens. I haven't slept in a tent in years.
Congrats!, also on you finishing this trail and another fine vlog. Inspired music choices, the attention to visual detail, insertion of more static landscape vision to complement the travelogue.
Yay! Finished! I start the Pinhoti in March. This was really helpful!
It was a great hike, lots of fun to watch. I'm glad to hear you'll have another hike soon.
Something that really helped me picking two trees far enough apart for hammocking is to know how many paces between trees work well for a good hang. Now when I get to a site I find two good sized trees 6 paces apart I know the hang is going to work well.
I measure the distance between trees in 'foots' (my own shoe's length). 14-17 'foots' is an optimal distance for my hammock setup. YMMV.
So nice you still had a little bit of Hank with you.❤️
He pops up at the best times 😭♥️🐾
Really enjoy your content and so glad that over all these years its still true to you. Really appreciate thats it's still raw footage of you on trail with in the moment comments. Love your work! Keep it real, not fancy! 😉
Thank you Dixie for sharing another great hike!
Lovely video Dixie. I especially enjoyed the music.
Keep hiking!
Lovely video, especially the last day in the rain. Thank you for posting this.
This is the first time I've been able to follow your hikes as they are posted. This is so exciting! I look forward to seeing the Florida trail adventures.
Congratulations on another completion! Great trip.
What a great little adventure! Thanks for letting us join in with you, if vicariously. You make such lovely choices of music - they're perfect. I'm looking forward to the next thing, but in the meantime I'll watch the PCT and CDT movies!
Been watching a heck of a lot of your videos. All 3 thru hikes several times. I'll say this. You're an amazing woman. So many out here aren't but you give me hope a few are left. I've bought a lot of the gear I think I need although it's cheaper and a bit heavy. But the idea of going for it is stuck in my mind like hair in a biscuit. And you're a big part of the reason why. So thank you
Once again it is soooo nice to watch content void of politics, talk of viruses and other icky things. I appreciate how wholesome your videos are. I know you won’t be cussing a bunch, will leave us with some good “wisdom nuggets”, and (I see that you have been given grief about this:) but I do appreciate that you didn’t share a tent with your boyfriend even if it might have been unintentional. I can recommend these videos to anyone from my teenage daughter to someone’s grandma!!!
I loved, loved, loved the slow rise through the frosty trees! The only thing I couldn’t seem to find was the well-placed “Homemade Wanderlust” title. Aaron hid it real good this time! A great way to end my birthday today.
Love that you found a Hank-hair on the bottle as you celebrated the finish🥰
The music in these videos are just fantastic. Thanks for sharing your hike Dixie!
Yay 🎉 congrats on finishing another trail! Tackling it during the Winter is just another element of adventure to add to your list of adventures.
2:40 🤣
Omg, tearjerker alert! Congrats on another success and I look forward to seeing you, (maybe) on the Florida Trail.
Incredible images in this video...thx Dixie!
Yay!!! So happy that you were able to do these miles! And I’m sure Hank was trotting along w/ you the whole way😇 Can’t wait for the Florida trail footage!!!
Congratulations Dixie! I just love your videos and will patiently await your next adventure. Big love from California.
I love watching you on the trail. Keep hiking your hike!
I just love the winter scenery and the piano music. Looks like a great time in spite of the cold.
I have always enjoyed hiking in the winter, especially in the snow. Glad to see you out again. All the best.
Congratulations on finishing the Pinhoti trail. I've definitely gotta get out on the trail.
Keep on with hammock camping, the more you do it, the easier it gets.
Y'all are amazing...beautiful video....thank you.
Here you go making me all nostalgic. I spent many weeks training for my canceled 2020 PCT hike out at Dyer gap on the BMT and Pinhoti. Love that area! It is so beautiful!
Legit burst into tears at “Hankey’s here to celebrate too.” 😭❤️ What a sweet way to finish, congrats! 🎉🍾
GREAT videography, beautifully framed and giving one an absolute Spiritual feeling; excellent close-up shots; great whimsical ad-libs, giving it the signature "Dixie Touch," and always GORGEOUS music (including, your singing)! Like all of your videos, I LOVED it! Thank you!
Nice job with the hammock set up. I switched to hammocking last spring and there is no looking back! Best night of sleep I've had in the woods in along time!
Thanks for the reply..makes sense!
Congrats! Enjoyed every minute. It's so beautiful out there
Completely different editing style for this trail. Really loved how you and your editor mixed it up and seemed more comfortable with silences and just music (but still made time for YOU and your personality). Seriously great work you should be proud of. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! ♥️
Congrats on the pinhoti trail Dixie! Thanks so much for taking us along on the adventure and the many gear reviews along the way. The hammock does take some time, but once you get things dialed in the comfort is sure worth it. As you all passed on the dollar general, I half expected to hear Aaron edit in "foggy mountain breakdown" (escape music from bonnie & clyde). I really enjoyed the trip. Thanks again for being there fir all of us, stay safe & best wishes as always!
Awesome, congrats!
Thank you so much for giving us a different and beautiful view of our planet. Nice editing, too. One of my favorite channels.
thank you for sharing your journey on the pinhoti trail. it's a abousutly beautiful trail.
I'm hoping you give the hammock a good testing. It's taken some time, but I can't go back to ground camping. I'm sleeping in my hammock at home at this point. It has cured my back and neck pain issues. Also, trail mimosas? That's a baller move. Thanks for showing me the Pinhoti.
I've only tried hammocks for a few minutes. Even with advice on aligning myself diagonal to the guy lines, I could not find what felt like a natural sleeping position. But you must have. Why do you prefer the hammock? What tricks are used to attain a comfortable sleeping position? And, what brand/model hammock do you recommend?
@@gregparrott The cross lay is the key, which it sounds like you've tried. There are a few factors in achieving comfort in this position. First is hammock selection. I personally use a Dutchware Chameleon, 11-foot. But, other cottage companies like Hammock Gear, Dream Hammock, and a few others are very good and preferred by others. The second is "the perfect hang" In fact, there's a book and website by that name. You want enough sag in your suspension to provide a 30 degree angle from the ground. You also need a ridgeline, set at about 83% if the total hammock length. This provides the proper sag to allow the cross-lay. Third is just practice. It helps if you can do this at home under ideal conditions to get everything dialed in just perfectly. Trail and error.
But, I know hammocks are not for everyone. I didn't get them at first either. But, I stuck it out and did some research and I will never go back to ground sleeping. I used to toss and turn, waking up frequently and just praying for sunrise. Now I can sleep in as long as I want. I get into full, r.e.m. sleep with dreams and everything. I was never able to quite accomplish that on my air matress.
@@timlois Thanks for the detailed reply. I searched for 'The Perfect Hang' and found 'The ultimate hang'.
@@gregparrott Ha!!!! Yeah, you're right. It's been a few years. It's a great resource. The Ultimate Hang.
@@timlois Thanks for the tip. I've ordered a used copy
Congratulations on completing the trail. I really enjoyed your trip. Can't wait until you start the Florida trail.
I’m glad you had a under quilt as well as pad, they make a big difference. I learned a lot from watching shugemery videos on setting up hammock. Good tips on keeping rain from dripping down into your hammock from lines as well as great hardware connections to use. Love your videos.
Woooh buddy!

Congrats Dixie! Can’t wait to follow you on The Florida Trail. Stay safe and thanks for sharing. 👍😊🏕
dixie, i am so pleased to see you working with the learning curve of learning to use a hammock. it's different, yeah, but i think you'll get the hang of it just fine and then you'll have a whole other choice for shelter that will be comfortable.
i love that you are not afraid to be a learner on camera.
Thank you Dixie I needed that very much CK
Shots and editing are amazing! Great work 👍 editing.
The music combined with the winter scenes was amazing!
I've been following you since the first day on the Appalachian. Always a fantastic video for us that are stuck in the everyday grind. Thank you for your videos. From someone that is part of the machine. Maybe one day, I'll be able to put my backpacking gear to good use. Please keep filming!
Hi Dixie it was good to see you hiking with someone on the trail with you. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for the hard work that goes into making these video's!
I smile every time I see you using that same old aluminum pot that you've had since you first started hiking on the AT almost 6 years ago. You probably wouldn't know how to cook if you ever lost it or it got a pinhole in it, LOL ! It amuses me to see that you still have it and use it for your trail cookwear. Like a worn out favorite teddy bear some adults still sleep with.
I often clip my pack on my hammock suspension at the head end. I have the Blackbird XLC and found about 18" higher on the foot end gives me a consistent departure to the Land of Nod. Great videos!
I have never had my foot end suspension more than slightly higher 9 a few inches) than the head end except perhaps if the trees are really really far apart. I also always have a tarp several feet longer than the hammock when all is "pitched" to insure good rain protection on those soggy days. There is a 5-10 night learning curve for hammocks in general.
@@geraldhenrickson7472 I always pitch my XLC foot end about 18 inches higher. Have done so for about 6 or 7 years now. I have a couple other hammocks that are less differential though. As you said, you have to invest in the experimentation to find what gives you comfort. Hsppy Hanging
Congratulations, Dixie. Another adventure completed ! Well done.
One word: HENNESSY. Best hammock on the market. Models from backpack to Expedition.
I was wondering how that hammock would work out. I'm kinda thinking about trying it myself now. Thanks for having us along on your journey. It's been fun. Great finish with mimosas. So 1980's.👍😀🍹
Congratulations Dixie and MarDe! Thanks for sharing your videos!

As someone that uses a hammock, it's good to see you getting experience using your hammock.
Omg your merch is awesome!! Gotta have the green tye dye landscape layers.. that's so harmonic with nature ..happy campy💚🏞️🌲🌄🌿
Love the frost shots !
I love the sound of rain on a tent. I think the secret to a good hammock pitch is doing it in sunlight.
I've set mine up in the dark at least as many times as in the light. Probably in the learning curve phase daylight is helpful, but so is patience and a willingness to learn from mistakes and laugh at yourself.
This is so inspirational.
Beautiful. Love the piano too. I need to get out there!
CONGRAT'S TO YOU BOTH!!!
