He's correct, in taking points away if it isn't perfect. If there are design details that don't live up to basic expectations, then they should be brought up. Reviews are only useful if they are transparent. The overwhelming majority of sailing channels just gush over all of the free stuff sent to them, because they don't want to rock the boat at all. If they bought it, then they gush over it, in the hopes that the company will send them free stuff in the future. It's obvious and cringey. I appreciate the honesty.
Thanks guys and welcome to 2023..! Good to see the long-term reviews, and as you know only too well, you can never have too much power, water, or refrigeration on a boat, so great to see your upgrades are working for you. The shoes...maybe trophies for the local serial killer (sorry)..?
another beauty - the camera work is superb and Judy is so photogenic!!. Its so good to see your continuing adventures. Looking forward to follow you through the next year 2023. Take care xx
To be honest I have subscribed for sometime only for your technical information about living in a boat, but honestly I am learning a lot about how to frame and do videography from you. Your previous video about mic setup was so good and the more I focus the more I realize how good you our at filming.
That a nice comment, thank you. It's a strange thing in that a good video shouldn't really stand out as being good in many ways. By that I mean it's the things you don't notice that make it flow and be seamless ( unless what you're going for is a punctuation at that point ) It's particularly true of sound. Mostly clean FX (general background noise) and music as well, should go relatively unnoticed. The thing is you will notice if they are not there, it will make it seem like a rough quality film, but when things are right it should almost go unnoticed. Thats why it's difficult to put your finger on what makes a well produced video.
@@svfairisle When it goes unnoticed is why you have a great expertise in the domain and a good eye to frame it. I am going to continue to learn more from you.
Thank you both for updating your product reviews- very helpful for us who are refitting boats! Spectra H2O was a needed confirmation, the Super B's seem to be Europe only at the present time,... can't wait for a Winter sail (inspires me to stop complaining of the cold & getting back to projects!) I & many others appreciate your cinematic efforts more than we gush over it? Must be that British reserve...Haha😄
Also a happy owner of a Tru Kit Discovery 330 and I’ll second your endorsement for the design and quality. Funny but we also had the Velcro keepers degrade pretty quickly and I figured it was just the harsh Florida sun. A quick note to Rod Dawson and Fergus was on it with free replacements within 10 days. Fantastic customer service from Tru Kit! Great episode.
Thanks for the video - enjoyed. Should it be 9.5/10 or 10/10? 10/10. Very much looking forward to sharing your New Year with you. I hope you have a really great one. P.
Happy New Year to you guys! Have to agree with the Digital Yacht WiFI/4g system; we inherited one from previous owner, ripped it out, replaced by a MikroTik non-marine system for ~£120 which has worked brilliantly for two seasons but sure it'll fail eventually.
The system I had before this (Wirie) was mounted outside in a little pela case & it lasted longer than the Digital Yachts system! There's no reason why a properly built bit of electronics shouldn't last 20 years on a boat, all the rest of our boat electronics has. But you may be right if the quality of everything is so low these days going for a cheaper option that you just keep replacing might be the way to go.
The underwater drone is great, in fact I was impressed with the quality of the PowerVision products so I have just got a couple of other items from them. A drone that goes on top of the water with a camera that can go above or below remotely. And most exciting of all (since I recently lost another drone to the sea, a waterproof flying drone) I will make some test videos as soon as I can.
We have mentioned it a couple of times in episodes, but you’re right I should have included it as it’s been a year now. It’s done a great job, the gel coat was going chalky within a couple of months even after careful cutting and polishing, now all the lower sections where it was really bad have lasted perfectly. I just have a couple of little spots where the fenders go, it obviously been worn off with the rubbing. But a half hour job to put right rather than several days! It’s expensive stuff but the alternative was a respray so much cheaper than that!
Just want to make a note accordingly to your sound input in your vlogging. not sure what it is, but cut over voice sound seems bit muffled. not sure if you use Rode mic? Sounds like a mic with double dead cats/mufflers ontop. Generally I´ve seen many of your videos and they all seemed to be bit sound dampened, compared to other channels. Maybe increase/adjust the treble level a bit. Example Sailing Uma, has a good sound level, and thats one of 80 sailing channels I follow. While listerning to your channel its dampened. Rode mics and gear is one of the top gear as an addition ontop of vlogging. But i noticed in your previous eps when you covered some of the mics, which is a good choice. Hence thou. as I said, i think its about the editing that makes the sound dampened. Compare a few raw scenes to edited scenes, and see for your self how the sound is different. I tried a few examples my self, while using headphones and then not, and switched output methods such as PC, standalone smart tv, and pc to TV, and Google home, even the iphone & ipad had it, but still the same difference. Imageing is super, just the sound. /Fair winds.
I cut some treble from the voice over as there is noticeable hiss otherwise. Actuality sound isn’t altered from its recorded tone, we use many different mics. You may find our level lower than others as well, it’s become the done thing to upload massively over modulated sound, I can’t quite bring myself to do it but I do generally have it 3db higher than it should be just so it’s not massively low compared with everything else.
Would appreciate some info on the boat STAMP mentioned. I sail in the med (on a US registered boat)… do not have one. I was asked once on a form to stamp a document with boat’s stamp… and I mentioned that I do not have one. Was not an issue. So, is it really need? What for?
It’s generally not needed, but in some places where they authorities are more used to working with commercial boats (here it’s the super yachts) you definitely need a boat stamp. We managed to fill up with fuel here a couple a years ago when we came through without one ( it used to be tax free fuel here, sadly no more) but it was a lot of hassle. We would not get packages in through customs here without a stamp they used it seven times on multiple forms to get that one small package in!

Several years ago there was a shot of your ship's bell, and I was puzzled by the name on it. Now you have shown the bell again would you please explain why "Isle" is spelled with a J?
To be honest I'm not entirely sure. The bell was forged especially for Fair Isle by the yard that did the final fit out in the Netherlands when she was new. My guess is they've used and old San Serif type font that often has I's as j's. It's only the second I that is that way though so it's probably from the way Latin and Greek were translated into Germanic type languages where they often changed around i's, j's and y's to aid pronunciation across different languages and dialects. 'Isle' is a pretty difficult word to pronounce in some places, here in Montenegro if we say we're from Fair Isle they don't know what we're talking about, we have to say Fair IS - EL! There, you're as confused as I am now!
No I just try to have cameras & lenses that are weather sealed, as long as you store them dry salt air shouldn’t be too much of an issue. The main thing salty air will do is corrode connectors. I regularly give them a spray with contacts cleaner, you’ll find the mic jack will go glitchy first if you don’t. Humidity is the biggest problem, especially for lenses, a dehumidified box is the only way around that.
No we don't. I've talked to people who want to fit them, I suppose it could be useful, but most of the cameras you get for those sorts of situations have a very wide field of view so up the mast you would see anything small or any detail in anything so limited to how useful it would be I think
Just did some research about the women’s shoes. That lone monk who was the last occupant was a cross-dresser. When he died, and because he suffered from smelly feet, nobody wanted to inherit the shoes, simple as that. 😂

as the bosan said to me when i was deck boy , Its not the amount of brasso you put on the cloth Its the amount of Rub you put in to the polishing ?
