I’ve heard a lot of people brag about this backpacking pillow, but let’s just say I was unimpressed… I’ll tell you why I was excited to try the Nemo Fillo Pillow, how it let me down (terribly!) and show you my budget backpacking pillow system that is SUPER comfortable!

I just got mine and it’s true what people say.
The first time you fill it up, you’re gonna put too much air in it. It’s going to feel uncomfortable.
Let out enough air that you can pinch the valve between your fingers through the pillow without putting pressure on the pillow
It feels like “this couldn’t possibly be right”, but in use it feels far more like a normal pillow when you do that.

I love that you make sure to mention that the same gear does not work for everyone. I actually have 2 of the Teton pillows. They're very comfortable, but I've noticed mine have flattened out quite a bit after a while. I recently got a fillo and really like it, but I normally sleep with a foam pillow, so for me, it's closer to what I use at home. I would like to add that some gear is more expensive because of the quality of the materials used and, at least in Nemo's case, the lifetime warranty. Sorry it didn't work out for you, but glad you've found something that does work.

I found a 2 pillow setup best. A cheap inflatable (a flattish design) and a pillow case from home (sewn across to make it narrower) with my fleece and spare clothes stuffed inside. You can experiment with how much stuffing works for you 👍 also, the empty pillowcase weighs next to nothing, and takes no room in rucksack.

I've been using the 2 pillow idea for awhile. Not the same 2 but one with straps to stay in place and the other without. I am a side sleeper with broad shoulders and they just don't make a pillow tall enough. I used to pile clothing on top of a pillow but I really don't take very much "extra" clothing with me. 2 pillows is slightly too tall for me but easily fixed by letting out a little air from one does the job perfectly!

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Рік тому +4

Sounds like you and I are very similar! Also a side sleeper with broad shoulders. 2 pillows is a definite game changer? I have found I often let a little air out of the bottom pillow, which honestly makes the entire setup even more comfortable!

I love the Thermarest compressible pillow! (Before the updated design). I am a back sleeper and I actually don't like tall pillows. So that one is my favorite because of how much it compresses under your head. Also! because it compresses so much under my head, I am able to keep in inside of my sleeping bag and still cinch the hood around my face no problem. My bag does not have draft collars and I'm sure it would interfere with those but mine doesn't so it's perfect for me

Excellent video. I came to this conclusion on my own a couple months ago. I was about to buy one because the channel "my life outdoors" recommended it. But I couldn't get myself to justify the price tag.
So I decided to use a klymit luxury large X pillow and a thermarest XL compressible pillow on top, both inside a fitted pillow sheet...all things I already had! Supper comfortable for me, so much so that it was able to replace my pillow at home for a couple of days while testing this set up with no problem.

My Life Outdoors is one of my favorite channels! but I've fallen behind so hadn't seen his recommendation of this pillow. Goes to show that different gear for different people. But for me, the fillo just isn't good.

As you said, different gear works for different folks - this pillow is the absolute best thing that’s happened to my sleep system in a couple decades..! One - don’t blow it up all the way hard, and it is much more comfortable. Two - push in the valve (with your tongue or your teeth) and airflow stops - turning it locks it closed. Three - I also take 2 pillows. My second pillow is the one from Outdoor Vitals. (Before that it was a Big Agnes.) I keep using it because it's there, really. My personal pillow system involves the best camping hack I have ever known- stuff an old thermal vest over the top of your mattress and put your pillows inside that. I have the fillo on top, and then put my day clothes underneath it to make a good solid and comfy pillow. I now don't wake up with an aching neck after an unconscious game of 'chase the pillow'!

I’ve got chronic pain and a lot of that pain surrounds my neck/back, so good sleep systems are a *must*.

The size will still be an issue - it isn’t large. But my older foam camp pillow was the same size, so that wasn’t a problem for me. The valve doesn’t let air out unless you set it to, which would cut down on that issue. Also, it doesn’t have a strap, but I haven’t had any issue with it moving on my sleeping pad (Big Agnes Air Core Ultra). It really doesn’t feel like a balloon like others do either.
For me, the size is critical. It’s about 3oz, and less than half the size of a Nalgene. For my 55l pack, space is super important. I totally agree with you that sleep is a critical part of backpacking, and I’m glad I found something that packs down small but still is comfy! I have the fillo elite so it is actually smaller than the regular size. I actually like that there is no strap as even at home I move my pillow around a lot and periodically decide I don't want a pillow at all. I think the Nemo pillow is more comfortable if it is just shy of being fully inflated. There is more give to it then. Regardless there are different products for different kinds of sleepers.

@@DoseofDirt I think you may have similar thoughts on it. The only difference I know of is that it is a little smaller than the Fillo. It just depends on the type of sleeper you are I think. With you using 2 pillows it seems like you like a thicker pillow. I prefer a thinner one. I don't think any of the balloon style pillows are comfortable when fully inflated so I always leave them just shy of that to help. I don't bother rolling up the pillow in a stuff sack when on a trip. I just throw it in flat in my pack liner with my quilt. I think it takes less space that way. It can mold to what is around it.

I have arthritic neck issues that make it difficult for me to be comfortable even home in bed with any normal pillows. The Nemo Fillo Luxury solved the problem for me, though it took a few tries to find the right inflation level to be comfortable. I ended up making it my at-home bed pillow as well as camping. I also added a silk child-sized zippered pillow case (ultra light) for a better feel against the skin. Been using it a few years now. IMO the key to comfort with inflatables is under-inflation so your head centers as the air displaces. The problem is there are all these ultralight pillows that delaminate and crack and lose air-tightness, whether that's cheap chinese versions or even the Gear Doctor you advocate for. Either the technology isn't there yet, or they're not thick enough to prevent failure. I have tested cheaper pillows, finding that they work for at least 3 months at home until they start losing air tightness. But that's without rolling and compressing the pillow in a travel situation, which in my opinion would escalate the failure rate.
I love the comfort of the ultralight with a slight under-inflation, but the failure rate concerns me in terms of how quickly these go to the landfill.

I noticed that you seem to have focused on the cons more so than the pros. Yes you described what the features are but the way you did so was "this is it?" kind of thing.
The Fillo does have one con that I do see that makes people not get it, the chemical smell. This con can be fixed by washing your pillow in the wash or spray the pillow with Febreze. The con that you had where you were chasing your pillow tells me you had it filled too much, when you made mention that the padding wasn't as noticeable or comfortable does tell me you filled it up too much. Maybe you like your pillows to be super firm, but the Fillo doesn't need to be filled all the way. Because of the valve, you can fill it up as much you want to get that soft comfort to it.
I know this is your honest opinion and everyone has the right to give one. But... when your two major issues can be easily fixed without modifying the pillow itself and by just adding less air into it makes me feel that you didn't do a proper test to see if you would like it. Not saying you will once it gets fixed, but you never know.
Much like how someone who sets up a tent improperly and it breaks so they give it a one star review, you could try to figure out how to make it work with what you have.

First off - be specific about which Fillo you have? - there are sif different model all of different sizes and heights, weights etc. You then say that you use 2 different pillows - like any ordinary person would take 2... If I don't like something that is readily recognised as one of the best, because hey, it doesn't work for me, I would say OK, doesn't work for me and move on with my life. I wouldn't make a video in a click bait style saying don't buy this! Not a single competitor would work, as you went with a two pillow solution....
