This is so helpful! I just started gardening in Victorville and the challenges have gotten the best of me. There are very few online resources about growing in our desert. I have four tomato plants and it feels like everything is working against me. Thank you for the advice!
I live in the desert north of Phoenix, where it is a tiny bit cooler, but saw my peppers get fried about 2 weeks ago, when it was about 110 for a day or two. Because I’m pretty new to this, every time I see “full sun” on the planting instructions, I never realized they’re not talking about the kind of sun we all face, out west, so full sun they got! I’m heading over to Amazon to look for some shade cloth. 😂. It may be too late for the peppers, but hopefully I can save the tomatoes! Thanks for the video!
I live in Northerrn New Mexico and you wouldn't believe it but it's raining like crazy ! And I'm currently cuddled up under pile of wool blankets trying to keep warm. It's amazing! lord knows we need it. hopefully it's heading your way
We also got some rain last week,it rained for almost 3 hours straight with lightning and thunders,it was pretty scary,I was able to harvest 3 full drums of rain water ,that's what I've been using on the plants I'm growing in pots....happy gardening!!
Your garden is beautiful! I have a mixture of shade cloth and wooden shade structures, a mix of 30%-60%. I also have a few gazebos with probably 80%-100% shade. I think growing in the desert in summer requires shade. Definitely the plants stay greener and produce much better.
I live in Extremadura SW Spain where July and August can easily reach 110 - 113 F. Although this year we had a freak week in early June where temperature was 113F already.. this caused so many of my plants to bolt or simply die. I know I need shade but I've not got my act together yet. Thank you for the video and your excellent solution. 👍
Secure that shade cloth well for when the occasional 50 to 70 mile an hour winds hit. I am 60 miles south of you in the Morongo Basin. We use 80% shade cloth about 7 ft. above the ground. It gives shade part of the day and is very effecrive.
Hi Angel, thank you for this informative video. I lve in the Morongo basin and I will surely take your advice on the covers. My question is, is it windy in Lancaster, as it is here?
Hi there! Love your videos! I live in Rosamond and have started a garden this year! I appreciate this video and plan to put up shade cloth but was wondering how it does in the winds??
Hi Angel. The garden is looking fantastic! Always an inspiration. Thank you for the great tips!
I lost my beets over the weekend from the heat here in Reno, I think I have to do this asap for my entire garden ! Thanks for the tips 👍

Your pepper plants might be able to recover if you supply some shade

Thank you. I have a 6x12 piece of shade cloth. I think I'll get it up this evening.

Yes ,extremely windy at times but the shade cloth works excellent even in windy days, just make sure it's properly secured
@@MyHighDesertGarden wonderful! Thank you!
Did you opt not to use 50% shade because of the wind?
No,is just that in my opinion 50% is a little too much shade

Yes of course, winds are really bad uphere but the shade cloth holds up pretty good, make sure it's pretty secured
Leave me out in the sun I wouldn’t be very happy either. Your plants must appreciate the shade, they look so well. Thanks!
What about winds coming and blowing your shade cloth? I have high winds here from time to time.
It doesn't happen because I secure it to the structure
