Fan-fucking-tactic show. I cant believe i never heard of Elliot. I’m 60 years old and music is super important. I love all genres of music and this is one musician I have not heard of. I loved Good Will Hunting and the music was great. I am loving your channel, i know I sound like a broken record saying this on every video but the way Mark is able to remember facts to a story is like he’s reading a book. It’s incredible story telling. Mark and Eric play off each other perfectly, Mark story tells while Eric takes care of corresponding photos etc. super great fellas. Thank you for great entertainment.
Imho Elliott smith was, hands down, the best performing singer/songwriter since like, John Lennon. His artistic ability is stupefying. Watching videos of him perform his songs is entrancing and magical.
You either get it or you don't i guess. For me, easily the best singer songwriter of his day.

I think he stayed relatively underground or misunderstood because he made music that musicians and artists loved, he didn't make commercial tunes for fame or money. I like that about his music. His art is so pure and full of passion.

Most suspicious is when she says he came to the bathroom door to tell her 'I love you'. I watch a ton of true crime and the perp very often will lie that the person they killed said something nice to them or about them like that. They were fighting when he ended up stabbed. Ahem.
Most suspicious to me is that he was (aside from antidepressants) sober. The only times I have heard of someone stabbing themselves in the torso is literally on heroin. He would have to be undiagnosed bipolar or something I would think to work up the manic fury to stab himself twice in the heart.
His toxicology showed him as clean other than a couple low levels of prescription medications.

This guy wore my cd player out in high school, Paschal High School, in the late 90s. In Fort Worth, TX.
My friend and I tried to learn every song of his, so difficult to do. But we all loved him. We bought every album the day they dropped. I’m touched y’all are making this. He was huge in our lives. I wouldn’t know how to play guitar if not for him in the mid to late 90’s. The most incredibly sad and beautiful music. Got all his albums on vinyl now that I’m 40. I’m so impressed y’all are walking this road! Brings a nostalgic tear to my eye.

I knew about Elliott when he was up for an oscar but I never got into his music. A while later I heard he had committed suicide. When Peaches Geldof passed away, I heard that she was listening to his music before she died. I dabbled and found out that I actually liked his songs. His music made me feel happy instead of depressed. His music is usually labeled "depressing." I heard about the strange circumstances in which he died and was lucky to find Alyson's group. I recently bought her book 'A Question Mark". Thank you for going over this, there's a lot of information to unpack. Elliott Smith has a really interesting "rabbit hole."

The USA does not have access to meaningful NOOTROPIC drugs - those that boost brain function - And frequently used in the world to treat ADHD in cases wherein the brainstem, etc., is not providing enough power for the rest of the brain.
In the USA, I have found a decent work-around by deploying Wellbutrin; sometimes adding Modafinil.
In the case of ADHD, the first step is to OBJECTIVELY document brain activity. It will enable us to observe, for example, whether or not low brain energy is CAUSING the problem; and, to form a baseline measure upon which to observe treatment efficacy.
To my knowledge however, in the USA, they don't seem to give a sh^t. Physicians merely administer a questionnaire, and dispense whatever the shareholders of some drug monopoly want him to prescribe. The end.
Mark knows everyone and has done everything, everywhere! :-)

I love his music and though I don't see myself as any kind of fan-girl, it really saddened me to know he'd died under such suspect circumstances. He was one of a kind, and that this video is introducing so many people to his work, is just awesome. Sad it had to be in this context.

I love hearing first hand accounts of the music scene of that time. People like to see pictures and imagine it, but i love to hear from people who were there or who knew people who were there.
Elliot Smith holds a place in my heart bigger than even Bob Dylan. Bigger than Kurt. He brought something so colourful and so beautiful to music. I feel like people hear his name and instantly think 'sad music', but i hear his music as colourful and full of a range of human emotions and experiences. He explained it himself as 'i just love music its simple as that' (paraphrasing) and i think that comes through his music more than anything. Love of music. I dont think he cared much for anything other than music and i feel in the end that he was surrounded by people (jennifer) who didnt care about him or what he wanted. Didnt care about him at all. He didnt deserve that.
Imagine instead of him dying, that they broke up. Imagine the music, poetry that he'd have made while processing it, rather than him not being here. His death feels like the worlds biggest robbery.
Im too deep down the rabbit hole at this point to even apologise for so many paragraphs and Elliot smith related comments. 😂

Edit: Jennifer talking about those last moments is the most suspicious thing ive ever seen or heard. She came out, he said i love you, he turned round and she 'knew it was real' (whatever the hell that means). So she proceeds to pull out the knife, and chase Elliot to the balcony where they...'fall together'? Why would they both end up on the floor? How was did she fall 'with' him unless she was trying to grab him? Why would a man with a knife wound to the heart, be running? Why would she need to chase him? If someone had stabbed themselves and was bleeding out and then they proceeded to run, surely, you'd be dialling 911 long before you thought to chase him and tackle him to the ground. She chose to call 911 after falling 'with' him and 'noticing that he was gasping for air' ...WHAT. So before calling for help she stood there and she watched him stand with a knife in his heart, listened to him say 'sorry Chiba i love you', proceeded to pull out the knife, and chase him down?
Is Jennifer Chiba in hiding rn because i feel like she should be, i don't think this case will be open forever.
This 2 part story was absolutely brilliant, you guys are awesome. I've been an Elliott Smith fan since around 2001 and always thought the story around his death was so weird. I really want to read this book now that the girl wrote about it.

Legally, Tech Companies cannot stop free speech - In short, because they benefit from a preponderance of the public traffic, they are subject to 1st Amendment Free Speech Rights.
The issue is whether the Constitution and the Bill of Rights can limit the actions of private actors. The issue has been tried: the court in Marsh v. Alabama (1946) ruled that a privately owned company town was subject to First Amendment principles even though it was technically private. “Ownership does not always mean absolute dominion,” wrote Justice Hugo Black in recognizing the free-speech rights of a Jehovah’s Witness to distribute literature on the company-owned streets. “The more an owner, for his advantage, opens up his property for use by the public in general, the more do his rights become circumscribed by the statutory and constitutional rights of those who use it.”
In recent times, courts recently found in dicta that social media spaces were akin to the ‘public square,’ and access to them could not be blocked by the state.
In short, the internet is a public forum, akin to a public street or park [aka it falls under the Public Forum Doctrine in law]. Some Supreme court justices, like U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, in an opinion on a 2017 First Amendment case, said as much. [Packingham v. North Carolina]
Under the public forum doctrine, the government is affirmatively obliged to dedicate property to the public's use for free speech purposes, and within such public forums free speech rights are accorded their greatest protection. [1]
Because Facebook, Twitter, etc., hold a substantive public forum, they fall under the Public Doctrine Law where by self-interested tech companies cannot unilaterally govern online discourse. Simply put, online platforms are constitutionally held to First Amendment standards.
I find it ironic that Trump was shot down in the courts for trying to block a critic on his Twitter account, (see Knight First Amendment Institute for Columbia University v. Trump). In that case the justice determined that this interactive space - Twitter - was a DESIGNATED PUBLIC FORUM and that the president could not discriminate against speakers because of their viewpoints. The Appeals court concurred.
If tech companies want to argue for protections under Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, they have to meet a pretty high standard, (e.g., their free speech code cannot be vague; must be constituent in rule and implementation; must not be intrusive; and, must achieve legitimate public interest objectives when infringing on speech).
How about hate speech or those invoking violence? According to Shannon Martinez, program manager for Free Radicals Project, a group that provides support for those seeking to leave hate groups, “In America, however, we do not have laws which govern or define hate speech per se”. Under the First Amendment, hate speech is a form of protected speech unless it crosses the line into narrow unprotected categories of speech, such as true threats, incitement to imminent lawless action, or fighting words. Controversy abounds over what actually constitutes hate speech.
In Whitney v. California (1927), Justice Louis Brandeis wrote that the preferred remedy to harmful expression is “more speech, not enforced silence.”
So why hasn't the DOJ sued the tech companies? Because the limitation of free speech is precisely what government wants! [Recent News story shows US Government funds Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. See story at [2]]
Additionally, Corporate bribery of politicians is legal in the USA.
According to Federal Lawsuits & discovery proves the US Government ordered Social Media to block anyone that contradicted their COVID propaganda. The blood would absolutely show if he turned around to face her with one bleeding wound and the knife still in his heart - they would know exactly where she pulled the knife out and if he took off running away-

We know nothing about the blood from the forensic report. The police don’t want to release info because the case is open. All I know is that people who went inside after his death said there was blood everywhere

When I heard her talking, it sounded to me like she put the knife in, pulled it out, and then he ran from her and she knocked him down and stabbed him again.. She wiped prints from the knife and didn't go with him to the hospital. I hope one day she has to pay for what she did

Wonder if Mark Groubert was in Park City for Sundance the year Odwalla brand was a sponsor? I was sitting next to someone that seems like it was Mark and I asked why literally everyone that came wore black all the time. He said, "I wear it because I drink a lot of coffee and when I spill it, black hides better than white." We talked for a bit and he was witty and irreverent.
I didn't even know about him in the nineties he was already dead and gone. My little sister is the one who introduced me to his music. I moved her up to Colorado when we listen to A CD over and over again.

Lifelong Elliot Smith fan. I have to say I disagree with his analysis. I agree with Gavin's observations of the behavior's that she's exhibiting but not his interpretations of those behaviors. It seems like Gavin's interpretations of Jennifer's behaviors and her description of Elliot's behaviors are inappropriately based on neurotypical models. People can be very committed to harming themselves or dying. Witnessing someone attempting/committing suicide is traumatizing and trauma can manifest in different ways. She might not remember everything and also feel like she has to defend herself because she has already been blamed by other people. Having a flat affect doesn't mean that she lacks emotion. Flat affect is found in multiple mental disorders like autism and schizophrenia. Gavin says, that if this had happened to him he would have reacted in a different way, but he is probably neurotypical and he also wasn't there. I obviously don't actually know what happened, but the analysis needs to be more thoughtful and nuanced. This type of behavioral analysis would only be used to elicit a confession and would not hold up in a court of law. Of course, Mark and Eric probably just asked Gavin to give his first impressions since Gavin can be seen wearing a wife beater shirt in the glare of his device. Lol

@@wassupwithlordbuckly1218 There's no way for me to know but I think that it should at least have been considered. All of the self-harm behavior was already mentioned so it is a possibility that she has a diagnosis that includes flat affect.
@@holdensanders2858 as I have met her several times and talked to many people who know her, I can tell you that she doesn’t fit in the autism spectrum at all. Bipolar? Maybe.
She is currently working as an art therapist for unstable young girls in the UK. I tend to think that institutions like the one she is working at do not hire schizophrenic people for that kind of job? It’s something difficult to hide.

Did you anyone else hear her say at 1:04:38, "WE just heard this awful noise in the kitchen?" WE, who??? Was there someone else there with her, possibly the guy she was sleeping with? I think her lover killed Elliot and she was there, it was done during a passionate fight, but Elliot was murdered. That's my guess.

What MG said about interventions causing resentment is true, according to Kurt Cobain’s biography. He felt betrayed by his wife and friends and committed suicide shortly thereafter. Courtney Love made a public pronouncement to that effect. She felt that the intervention pushed him over the edge. I’m going by what an unauthorized bio stated. I wonder what MG’s thoughts on this are and whether he will do a KC podcast one day.
Like Elliott Smith, also victims of long term benzo use - which over time causes great swaths of the brain to die.
The other thing about interventions is if they aren’t done yet it’s a waste…all the tears on earth won’t stop them from going back out.

1:06:50 & 55:08 she says "it was real" - İn my opinion she's expressing what was going on in her mind at the time without filters. My theory is, first, she couldn't believe herself that she actually did that to him -- and then the reality hit her. Either that, or, she has had thought of killing him before, and when it actually happened she went through a moment of realization.
Perhaps I should listen to the very end but this is bugging the hell out of me. After listening to your CIA videos I'm forced to wonder with the quick rise of someone who listened to grunge back then (me) has never heard of this guy. It's always funny and gloomy at the same time how , intellectually inferior people can brush off as "paranoid" the idea that some people potentially worth several millions of dollars of artistic rights could be bugged at home , when there is regularly instances of people actually beeing bugged by private entities during simple inheritance of well under a million processes .....
