  • The desert is a land of extremes you have extreme heat by day, cold temps. by night, wind storms, lack of vegetation, things that poke and sting, and the biggest threat- a lack of water. The fact is, most folks that are lost out in the desert and happen to find rescue suffer from dehydration. When it comes to Survival priorities water is key and the Native peoples who lived out here thousands of years ago made their homesteads around water sources. In the Mojave desert when you find a significant amount of water your other priorities fall into place such as, building materials, tools, plant life, animals and much more. The problem is, finding water out in the desert can be difficult. In this video Jeff shows you how to locate water in the Mojave Desert.
    In a wilderness survival situation, primitive skills, bushcraft, and wilderness living skills can save your life. In this video we focus on primitive technology. You should also mention the need to carry a small amount of salt. Most people are so focused on drinking water they forget to consider if there is no salt in your system, your body will not be able to utilize the water you ingest. Its happened to me more then once southern California desert area. Especially if there's very little food intake.I could drink all day and I would still feel like I wasn't getting any water and I would urinate every 10 min.

      Actually, some people found a tribe that had no idea what the heck salt was, and they were living off perfectly fine. Also, salt makes you thirstier...

    Another reason not to camp in a body of water is because in some areas, where wild life is bigger, it’s possible for predators to wander into your camp. Either way great vid 👍

    cover the mouth of your canteen with several layers of folded bandana and face the mouth downstream to minimize sediment.

  • @matthewjeschke
    @matthewjeschke 4 роки тому +1

    Put the wet bandanna around your neck. It will help keep you cool while it dries off. I typically wet a bandanna when I get a chance in the desert, then put it around my neck.

    When you put the chlorine in the water, that is the time to disinfect the threads. You can then rinse the threads before drinking. Cloth over the mouth of the canteen when filling keeps out the debris and sediment. And if your going to carry the tube, carry a small filter. Excellent videos!

      Because our society is only concerned about skills geared towards jobs which it relies on. So today you have a lot of STEM classes and lessons. Institutional education is really a joke that is less about the individual and more about the needs of the job market.

    Hello Jeff, great video. Kudos! Making these is not easy. I wanted to point out that at 10:10,when you found a trickle, using your knife sheath was interesting, but you might get tanning chemicals in the water. Maybe not important in survival. I was surprised that you didn't say to dig a hole in the sands at that point, possibly line with trash can liner and collect that puddle that was forming at the base of Rock and sand on the video. In my estimate, you were saved at that instant. That puddle looks to be a liter or more per hour. Keep up the "inclusive" videos!!! Great asides on culture!

    There might have been a little sediment in that stream but you could have drunk it without suffering any harmful effects. I guess there were no towns, cities or farms upstream. No beavers, No huge herds of bison. And the UV would have taken care of most of anything else. You soon get used to the taste. Depending on the minerals in the water it may cause diarrhoea in folk used to town supplies. But you won't die.

    Chemically, I like to carry Lugol's solution - 5% version - Iodine/ potassium Iodide- for chemical purification. One can argue which chemical is best to use, and for me, a much better taste than Chlorine. Boiling is best, as I understand, but chemical with a survival straw (lower the micron the better) will take care of a lot.

    • @trevorh6438
      @trevorh6438 8 років тому +1

      I agree with lugols solution. Good for water purification and disinfecting wounds. Its also not a pure poison like bleach and chlorine, iodine is actually used by your thyroid.

    • @bmphil3400
      @bmphil3400 5 років тому +1

      I have used iodine in some BAD places..... Guyana and Panama......they are saying now that iodine is not effective on cryptosporidia.....but I have had no bad effects.....maybe I have been lucky.....they are saying now that chlorine dioxide is better and kills more pathogens.....the drops work faster than the tabs.......

    Just an FYI - bleach degrades over time. If you have it stashed in your survival bag be sure to write a date on it and change it out for fresh bleach occasionally. Also, bleach degrades faster when diluted, so keep that in mind. Here's a link that tells more about bleach degrading. www.scripps.edu/newsandviews/e_20060213/bleach.html

    Are you aware chlorine displaces iodine in the system, if continued for long enough you run the risk of heart problems. A lot of young (20 year old plus or minus) men returned from Vietnam and had heart attacks and the authorities determined chlorine to be the reason. It was covered up.

      In my humble opinion, It would not be beneficial to cut the tube because that full length may be needed in another situation. Keep it long as is. However, it would be easier to suck through the tube at full length if he had kept it at ground level. Just merely lay down on the rock and prevent having to fight gravity by standing up.

I'm immunocompromised, and I wouldn't dare drink from that. You may get by with it if you have a healthy immune system, but I've pulled water samples out of places just like that and seen microbes and bacteria in it under a microscope. So, I would still treat it to be on the safe side. Many thanks.
