Not sure if anyone else has already mentioned this but just to bring up the fact that he's performing this in the forest as opposed to some prepared stage/set/studio - where the ground is uneven (with random rocks and roots) and there's loose soil (sure, not as slippery as sand but still...). These factors can mess with your sense of balance and just highlights his versatility and adaptability as a dancer in not being restricted to performing in just one defined space.

here's my personal interpretation of the choreography (from a chinese, also a dancer!): 本 (běn) refers to origin, roots in the video we see how minghao transitions through different dance styles: slightly contemporary/modern ⇢ bboy ⇢ martial arts, and pay attention to the CHRONOLOGY we know that minghao has been learning contemporary only recently, maybe this one or two years, thus the contemporary sequence represents his present, the current him. then we see breakdancing. minghao has been learning breaking since he was a kid so it's probably the most significant dance style to him since he's been dancing it for more than half his life, and this signifies his past, what made him who he is. the last dance sequence we see is the martial arts (wushu) one, which symbolizes his chinese roots, and i just think this is his way of saying "i've made it this far and i'm still exploring, but i won't ever forget where i came from". it's a beautiful touch how he arranged the sequence of the dance styles -- from the one seemingly of latest significance to the oldest one chronologically in time, in reverse order in the dance. it comes to a full circle when you realize the message he's trying to convey all through the dance and the dance only. i love this man so so much🥺

本 means “origin” in Chinese. Personally I think this video represents going back to the origin, to his root and digging into himself. As there are multiple influences on him (like Chinese martial art, b-boy dancing and contemporary dance, etc.). It is really stunning! Like for him.
This is truly an amazing piece of art that expresses Minghao's thoughts of his past and present. The title 本‘s original meaning in ancient Chinese means the roots of plants and trees, based on that, it has derived to mean the origin, the essence, the source, the basis, one's self, etc. I think he is trying to depict himself as a tree, coming out of the earth and growing freely in the forest, moving along with the wind and feeling the environment. You can see that he tries to incorporate his various interests in this dance. His moves are a clear representation of both the contemporary dance structure, as well as Chinese martial arts and breakdancing techniques. We can also find the references for comparing the growth of a person to a tree in many ancient Chinese philosophical thoughts. And the ideas of peace of mind and embracing nature I believe are influenced by his meditation experience. Interestingly, the music here is played by a Korean musician using the Korean geomungo. Fun fact: the geomungo was created by Wang San-ak back in the 4th century following the form of the Chinese guqin, so you can see a lot of resemblance to guqin in terms of structure, sound, and style, but it also has its own uniqueness. It is a collaboration of both Chinese and Korean culture. I think it is also the perfect representation of Minghao's own personal experience, with his Chinese roots, but always embracing everything new around him, just like the tree absorbing sunlight, water and air from the environment. In his birthday live on Weibo, Minghao mentioned that he recently has developed an interest of communicating with different people and trying things that he had not tried before to get to know different perspectives of the world. This dance is the perfect embodiment of this thought experiment. I am so happy for his growth, both as a dancer and as a person.

not a single muscle, hair, nail is out of place. Every single move is so precise and coherent, I could feel him, I vibed at the same rithym as he did. Something on my chest was trembling when I saw he mixed styles but it didn't feel like that cause every second of the video was his own style and that's what art is about. Something on my chest was trembling when I saw he mixed styles but it didn't feel like that cause every second of the video was his own style and that's what art is about.
