- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Land Tax Boros, a brew challenge from Patreon subscriber Joyami. I was tasked to build around the card Land Tax, a previously-banned card advantage engine for decks with lots of basic lands. I wanted to build something new, rather that rehash the usual Azorius control Sroll Rack shells. I leaned into Red's Blood Moon Stompy mana base with the rummage looting mechanic, primarily on the back of Fable of the Mirror Breaker. In Boros we also get Nahiri, the Harbinger, a prison and control build-around planeswalker from another age. She loots, she removes problems, and eventually she hits with Emrakul! MTG

I'm just in the deck tech right now, but I really like the brew challenge approach of asking what the card wants you to do, and then checking those boxes.

Land tax is a cursed card, I swear. Every time I play it, I end up drawing just as many lands as I fetch and end up with a 7 land hand.
Scroll rack and land tax are one of my favorite parts of my commander deck
I really like the elegance of the synergy between land tax and emerakul, allowing her to shuffle the discarded basics so tax can keep tutoring them (along with the other synergies - I'm sure he states this in the video, but I am writing this before watching the gameplay).

This was truly a league of all time. Jesus at some point I wasnt expecting anything anymore and just waited for Swamp Drit. Glad the Gobbo game happened and we could watch the deck actually do something. But still looks fun!

It's a deck full of cards that are good and played in legacy. But it doesn't do anything. It does... Nothing.

@@Graatand Yes, I was. But some other reader might not have been able to. That person might have been exited to see Grimgor, Archaon, Teclis, Gotrek, Thanquol, and the rest in card form, and being disapointed that it was just 40k cards when the truth dawned on them.
And for the side note, Warhammer fantasy would suit Magic the gathering multiversum much better than 40k. For example orc boar boyz would fit an existing deck much better than orks on deathchoppers, wouldn't you agree?

I know this was Land Tax deck but could try similar 8 mox deck with new Case of the Crimson Pulse. Emptying the hand shouldn't be a problem (unless you draw all the lands like here :D)
What about Koth, Fire of Resistance? He can remove some small creatures or ult after 2 turns and make the sol lands deals 4 with a Blood Moon in play.
was this inspired by the premodern format? The taxes and mox diamonds plus prison cards really remind me of pink prison or parfait

Any merit to Scroll Rack in this build? Racking out three basics a turn seems viable, but I might be missing something...
Why bitter reunion over cathartic reunion? I feel like replacing 2 lands with real cards is so much better than maybe giving a creature haste later.
This might just be the most forced deck I have seen in a long time. It would be interesting to see a blue white land tax control deck that uses things like foil as extra free counters and planar rebirth to ramp to close out the game with big heavy hitters.

Does Seismic Assault or something similar have any place in this deck? Seems like something good to do with a grip of basics without invalidating the Land Tax trigger.

Doing some, more or less basic, stochastic Land Tax isnt a functional card - if you cant convert the basic lands into value. The deck thinning alone is not worth a card + 1 mana, given the fact that each fetch land, a mechanic ya Land Tax deck falls short on due to playing more basics, is a 1/3 of the thinning value of Land Tax anyway and the Land Tax itself can be an interaction card like Swords to Plowshares. To make Land Tax worth a cardslot you need something that turns basic lands into interaction. Like Molten Vortex or Seismic Assault or Psychatog or Armageddon. Yet those cards are all .... "not good". So as long as nobody finds a good use for basic lands in hand Land Tax is a meme. (Which btw it always was. Virtually all "old school" Land Tax decks like Parfait or XYZ-Geddon work better without Land Tax. People back then just got it wrong)
I think there is an argument for turning basic lands into combo potential instead - setting up Charbelcher or balustrade spy with substantially more relaxed deck construction. It turns the interaction problem the other way round for your opponent - 'can you answer my 1 mana enchantment that is part of a 2 card combo'.
The tension between 'wants to be an ancient tomb/city of traitors' / 'wants all lands to be basic' is still a big headache despite that.
If you go the other way to 'all basics'+mox+ritual+LED etc you can probably get something going, especially with land tax letting you fight blood moon and similar pieces. Maybe a doomsday list so you get overlap in combo pieces? Or just a charbelcher top end on an aggro list so it doesn't even need to reveal that many cards while making your opponent want to leave in enchantment/artifact answers.
Its still memey, but it feels like it could get closer to being there.
