- Dean Karnazes most likely ran a marathon before you woke up this morning. Here’s what happens when you reach a summit, grit your teeth, and Climb On.

Did he just say I run a marathon every morning before break fast ? Bro
look up Courtney Dauwalter, Moab 240 first place finisher, 238 miles, in 58 hours.
And he runs a brief 13 miles that same afternoon focusing on speed-work.....geeezzzz
@@Pays2Win Here i am feeling proud of 4 miles in 37 minutes , lol

"For me to train I like to get up in the morning and run a marathon before breakfast, and then do some speedwork, maybe 10 to 12 miles at a faster pace" said no normal human ever!
Dean Karnazas is an ultra runner. Most consider them not normal human beings. But certifiably crazy!!!
Who wants to be normal anyway? It is just boring....
Facts!
Look up david goggins
🙀
This guy entered the no lactate cheat code on the game menu of life.
I.K.R.
if he doesn't have lactate can't he possibly run sub 2 in a marathon?
@@moonootoo He said he can't exactly go fast, fastest marathon runner ran 4:40 miles which is crazy fast but I don't know, I think he might. Hope it's a genetic thing and not some mutation so he can pass it on to his kids
not lactate. lactic acid
lactate is milk
Me: "I train hard to become a marathoner!"
Dean: "I ran 50 marathons in 50 States in 50 days."
Thats good, but google James Lawrence - 50 ironmans in 50 states in 50 days, thats said to be as close to impossible as it gets (with all the traveling). So everyday race is (a full ironman is): 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.20 km)
Karnazes is born without Lactic acid in his body, so thats kinda like cheating when it comes to physical endurance and exercise. other people have lactic acid: gives u sign to STOP exercising, it can become too much for ur body! get it. Karnazes has this gift in life born without lactic acid. I try to run now every day 2rounds of 20min and my legs hurt like hell. sometimes I can not run the other day. I have to wait or 2 days waiting, then running again for 2rounds of 20min or more. thats it. an normal marathon of 27miles is waaay too much for normal people, left alone ultramarathon like Karnazes... respect to this man!
Ado Podrinje - lol he was not born without lactic acid! You and Dean need to read up on lactic acid. If Dean didn’t produce lactic acid, he would not be able to run any long distances. Lactic acid is created when your body breaks down carbohydrates for energy. His body simply flushes it out because he runs at a pace well above his ‘lactic acid threshold’. Other than that he’s an expert in fueling and pacing and has tremendous mental and physical toughness which a lot of extreme endurance athletes have. His body utilizes fat stores and carbohydrate stores just like everyone else’s.
tbh lactic acid is to prevent from damaging your body, like any pain. So if you wouldn't have pain and run, you could literally run to death, because you wouldn't know when to slow down or stop. So it's good to feel that pain, it says that your body is reaching some limits and then it's up to your will power to ignore and say - hey, I will go further and expand my limits.
then Dean is lying here when he says: ive been sliced and diced, and what they found out? I do know that I have maybe too much lactic acid then. same as Dean could probably DIE too early cuz he's over-using his legs when it comes to running. I really think this man is running toooo much, its kinda ridicolous or madness or whatever u wonna name it. but I like the guy ! he gives me hope and inspiration and motivation same as Wim hof method as well as Mike tyson! all great men in their way! same as Bruce Lee
I once met Dean Karnazes. During his run across America from Disneyland in California to New York, he stopped in about 12 different cities to do a charity 5K to give his fans a chance to run with him. One of those 5Ks was in my city in the Midwest. I got there early and managed to get a spot right up front right next to Dean. We had a very pleasant 15 minute conversation about running, nutrition, the logistics of his crazy distance runs, shoes, gear and everything else. I found him to be one of the nicest, funniest, most polite gentlemen I have ever met. I could have talked to him for much longer, but decided to give others a chance at him. I considered it an honor and a privelige to run next to the great Dean Karnazes. I paraphrase someone else (can't remember who said it first) and describe it as being like setting up an easel next to Picasso, shooting hoops with Michael Jordan, sitting down at a piano with David Benoit. He really is a down-to-earth cool guy.
so inspirational to see Bill Nye keep reinventing himself over the years.
His girl: We need to talk after your run
This guy:
His girl: 3:15
They scientifically proved that Dean can run his whole entire life...given that he runs at 6-7 mph and is nurtured properly.thats insane
That's laughably slow to a guy like Eliud Kipchoge
Bryan onstad, I think you missed the part where he said " his entire life "
How about sleep?
Actually it would be at 4 mph.
-sleep
Anyone who thinks the body only has a limited number of foot strikes, etc, needs to lie in a bed for a month, and then try to walk. You'll need physical therapy just to be able to take one step again. It's inactivity that weakens the body, not activity (which cause cells to regenerate).
Timothy Roper He also has a neutral foot strike which contributes to a lack of injuries....he’s got great genetics.
+JamesScottGuitar well, specific genetics, more like. The missing lactic acid build-up means that he can exercise long, but not very powerful.
True. Knee op put me inactive for a month
So pretty much if you don’t use it you lose it.
I call bullshit. I ran for 35 years and my knees are destroyed. They sound like ratchet wrenches when I bend my legs, give out on me under a load, and are like an 80-year old's.......and I'm only 53. I've also had many stress fractures, Achilles tendon tear, plantar fasciitis, and hip injuries. I'm trying to avoid knee replacement surgery by strength training and giving up running 3 years ago. All my non-athletic friends/peers have no knee problems. My knees have improved quite a bit after 3.5 years of no running and I'm hoping that continues.
What an absolute beast
A lot of elite ultra-runners don't like Dean because of all the publicity he gets. The man knows how to inspire and communicate well, and let's be honest, very few people had heard of ultra-running until Dean came along.
Probably because long distance running is such a solitary sport.
not like he’s anything special yeah he can run for a very very long time but if you’ve seen videos his pace is pretty slow
He has successfully fooled the general public into thinking he's something special. I won't fault him for that though. He found a way to make a career out of something he loves.
+Jackson Pavlovich he cannot build lactic acid, so his energy output is more consistent, yet not that high.
Courtney Dauwalter is a beast too
He started running at age 38. Imagine if he would have competed when he was younger
Jeffrey Salvador spin that question around and it's even more interesting
GENETICS

It would probably be just as unimpressive as it already is
@@GreekSoldier46 yea, i heard him say he started at age 30 as well.

I have yet to hear a Christian say that they said one prayer and never trained at all yet set the world record in the marathon! And had wings like an eagle, and ran and never got weary...

This guy gets life, it's not about trying to have an easy life, it is about pushing yourself and seeing what the human is capable of achieving.
"I ask not for a lighter burden but for broader shoulders"
And I had thought that Jesus said that as a Christian that our burden would be easy and our yoke lite!!!
He also has a genetic mutation that allows him to do this
John Doe I wish my life was fucking easy
Well said! 👏
The Pope other people do similar stuff, it’s possible with normal genes
"My finish line will be a pine box. "

Learned quite a few things from this guy Dean that stuck with me over the years, such an inspirational guy.
I personally wonder more about why his joints aren't completely fucked up
Either they are, or he hit the absolute genetic jackpot.

The second part of that is what should have been highlighted, he does that and works to still get to the finish of that run.
It’s a good feeling becoming comfortable with pain at that level. You feel superhuman and unstoppable!
@@randomness9960 no, just self hatred
Legend has it he still put his skill points on his stamina as he levels up...
I love this guy's attitude. I wish someone can do a video about how their joints adapt to this!
He should run the Barkley!
I highly recommend one of his most recent books, “Road to Sparta”. It’s beautifully written and interweaves his whole life story with the history of the marathon and his experience doing the race based on that. I had the fortune to get to know him a little at a fitness spa called Rancho la Puerta, where my husband and I present concerts in exchange for stays. Dean was a guest presenter one time we were there and presented a talk and that newer book, and ran with guests. He’s a truly nice, gentle and humble guy despite some forces on the internet that try to portray him differently. He makes fun of how slow he runs and makes no claims to anything but what he loves to do. The book explains that his unique body chemistry that predisposes him to this was evident when he was a little kid, like in kindergarten, and ran around the schoolyard endlessly, effortlessly, to raise some money or something. So that 30 mi run wasn’t something as out of the blue as it sounds. Martha
I'm pretty tired

XDDDD! and just like that my running days were over.

Need money to become legendary?
@@arogueburrito yes they needed a recording device and at least paper and pen to write their lyrics or theories and paper and pen do in fact cost money
@@Al_Gonzo then that's just a non-argument. Your initial comment seems to suggest a good bit of money is necessary, but getting paper and a pen is possible with minimal leverage. My point was people who are hyper dedicated still find a way, even of they're poor
@@arogueburrito poor is subjective. You cannot be a good rocket scientists if you are poor. And if you are so poor that you cannot afford a bike then you obviously cannot be a good cyclist

They interviewed his parents and they said when he was little they went through 20 babysitters, because the kid wouldn't stop running the house and bouncing off walls! Babysitters would literally run out of the house, "get me the he'll outta here!!" 😀

A tortured mind leads a tortured life. Once you reach salvation, you will no longer torture yourself. Been there.
It feels like I HAVE to do vigorous exercise every day and occasionally scream to vent my anger/frustrations/demons. Otherwise I have very little focus and peace of mind. Even with the exercise and various coping mechanisms, I still struggle a lot with concentration and long-term planning.
You make the difference mate keep it up

Interestingly, as far as the no sweating and lack of lactic acid buildup, I have a similar experience. I didn’t know it was a thing. I’m not no where near his his level, but I can go & I don’t get thirsty easily while hiking, running or working out. I think I can do better. I will do better. 💝

Sir welcome to our Trail !
I did a lot of running on concrete, no issues whatsoever with my knees or any other body parts
What’s amazing in my opinion is that he discovered this at age 38. Can you imagine this at a younger age? Being in your late teens and early twenties while aware of this would be astonishing. You’d be at your prime with a genetic advantage.
Should I start then?
No. When he was younger he used to run marathon. Then one night when he was celebrating his 30th birthday, he just wanted to run and ran 30 miles in the middle of the night.
What a cool guy
he is Forrest Gump
The real FG
a very smart business man that understands his window of time closing
My competitive running career started in a similar fashion. Mine started with a drunken bet with a Navy buddy that I couldn't run a marathon. 7 months later I completed the SF Marathon in 3 hrs and 28 minutes. So much suffering for a 50 Dollar bet.
I have no idea why some people are negatively criticizing this man. Even if he isn’t the fastest runner just the fact that he can get out there and keep moving for hundreds of miles non stop or run a marathon distance everyday for 50 days is just mind boggling. I used to run 25 miles a week 5 miles 5 days a week and was at the lowest weight of my life at 5’ 11”, and 180lbs. for a year and a half was I believe in the best shape of my life. One day I wanted to see if I could run 10 miles, which I did easily because my cardio respiratory system was great but afterwards both my knees were killing me and I was laid up for a few days recovering and said never again will I run further than I’m capable of if I want to stay healthy, even 5 miles a day was overkill, because I believe I only needed to do 2.5-3.0 miles 4 times a week in 30 minutes to be be in the same condition. People who run more than that is beyond my understanding. That I think is too much running for fitness reasons unless you are training for races of which I don’t and never want to. I guess to each their own.😎
This guys physical abilities and abnormalities are every runners dream
I can run marathon 4 hrs non stop, but, this guy 🤯
Much respect and yea age is just a number
I ran a half marathon on Saturday and my ankles are crippled today. How is this person still alive?
The moral of the story here is: recognising his threshold for pain is virtually zero, and then capitalising on it. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Some people were really just born to be able to do impressive feats
I got a side cramp watching
SystemCTRL It’s called a muscle stitch
He's unique in the mention of lactic acid here, but also you can tell he has a strong gut from reading his book and how he eats while running.
No other animal comes remotely close to just how long humans can run. It's what we evolved to do, in my opinion it defines us as much as the discovery of fire and tools. This man would be the goat even a million years ago when all we did was constantly move.
The first time I watched this I choked on my coffee when he said he runs a marathon before breakfast
And then when he said he does 15 more in the afternoon I spilled coffee all over myself
Beautiful beautiful beautiful. Just beautiful
Me thinking I am killing it because I run a half marathon 4x a week at 9:30 and a 20+ mile on Saturdays now I am like I got to do better.
