- Collagist, John Digby of Oyster Bay, NY, introduces his work, techniques, and inspirations.
This video is part of the Meet the Maker program by Think Long Island First. More at www.thinklongislandfirst.com.
It was filmed on October 5th, 2012, in Oyster Bay, NY.
The strange, impatient, almost harassment style of the interviewer really grates. The artist is charming despite her hurrying him. Beautiful art and fascinating process, such a shame that she doesn't just leave him be, to express his art. You can feel his nerves and how he is affected by her style.
Amen. 🙏🏼
I agree. He’s charming. She’s obnoxious.
She put me off.
Perfectly put
agree. I can't finish it.... she appears so impatient with the lovely man....
Good lord, woman, let the artist speak! I'm sure he'd have done a better self-interview. He's a brilliant collage artist, with lots of knowledge to impart.
What a sweet man and what an abrasive interviewer. It was painful to watch.
Terrible interviewer….rude and impatient…I would love to hear from this artist without her!!! She really spoiled it.
what a genuinly beautiful artist and what a ruthless interviewerer.
She isn't a professional, clearly!
So interesting to see. Such a pity that the lady interviewing was so rude and rushed him through the process without letting him go at his own pace. She also kept finishing his sentences and words. So impatient and ruined the interview.
I agree. This artist is a jewel. She is a fool to squander a golden opportunity and to present herself so rudely. In time this video may become very historic of the artist, and people will always see how rude and disrespectful she is.
One wishes the interviewer could muster to be more patient and polite.
So true..can i pin her on the canvass instead?? 😈
She rushed too much and not let the artist finished his explanation, how fantastic is his work love them
The interviewer is maddening
He is a sweet old man to share his expertise and techniques 🙏❤️
Yowie! Oh man, his process seems so differreent and interesting -- such a shame that gal kept interupting him. Gads, the guy is a total gem and she stomped all over him. We couldve had a master class if she'd just shut her mouth.
@madhabitz you state it so perfectly. Such a shame. Right before watching this video I watched another one of a collage artist, this one shot by @LukaMcGhie, it was so beautifully done. Hope we can find a better interview of this lovely artist. Had she listened slowly she may have understood that even the way he goes about choosing his books is in fact all part of his process. BEAUTIFUL art. 💙💫🧑🎨
What a sweet and passionate man! Love his work.
Wonderful collagist who clearly has a passion for what he does. A few minutes in and already I don't like the impatient, rude, crap "interviewer". I would never tolerate that from a friend, family member, or colleague; much less in my working studio. Back off, you are in his workspace!
A Master Class in “How Not To Interview”!!! (Was she trying to catch the bank or the supermarket?) I was torn between the tension of enjoying Mr Digby’s words and the impatience of this interrogator.
Very rude interviewer
I’m envious of his magnificent collection of old battered books. John is absolutely PRECIOUS!!! Beautiful art! 😊❤️🔆
This guy is amazing! His collage pieces are beautiful. I hope the lady doing the interview has picked up better techniques because she was too impatient.
Fabulous art, John. You are a wonderful inspiration!!!
Wow!! He's so precise with the fuzzy cutting!! He's got great eyesight!! I'm just 31 and having glasses but i have problem fuzzy cutting intricate details. Kudos to you, sir!!!
🙌🙌🙌
Amazing artist, beautiful art.
how unique.... good work John
Beautiful work! Unique! Creative!
Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful work interesting technique.Didnt the presenter realise the artist was elderly .deaf with a speech impediment or was she on a time limit? He needed more time we all felt rushed
Yes - she made it much worse for him by flustering him. Hard to watch.
Yes, interviewer is rude, I was so disappointed
This is what I call it art thank I really enjoyed my time watching this video and above all the he inspired me
So interesting and a great artist, trank you!
That was fantastic and so interesting to see John's process. Thank you for posting.
God bless him with good health
I agree with the previous comment; the interviewer is rude and impatient. I also would love to rear the artist without her or with a more professional interviewer. This artist and his work are fascinating!
Wow the interviewer is a very impatient person. Speaking for him. Not waiting for him to finish. Let him speak and tell about his art and books that he is so passionate about.
What a beautiful soul. The best interviews are those that give direction, not orders. Relax an enjoy the journey with the soul of an artist. It’s the only way you will learn true meanings.
Amazing- woh woh woh what a wonderful great artist he is
God bless you
His work deserves an documentation film for all the marvelous works
What an interesting and talented artist and art!
Yes the interviewer woman rushed him . Too bad.. she is very abrupt. But he is a wonderful artist with passion and skills.
Beautiful work John.
John's a gem! I love his work! He must have unmatched patience. Thank you, John.
I love this guy. Very inspiring.
This was wonderful! Curious about the handmade paper he discussed at he end - was he working with original handmade paper or copies of it?
Love his *abstract*work.
I've taken so much inspiration from this wonderful man. I wish I could than him.
Oh, how I would love to spend the day in this man's studio. I would just let him talk and ramble and talk as he desires....and end my visit a richer woman. As a fellow artist and an empathetic person I simply cannot finish this video because of the interviewer.
Hi that technique of collage is amazing !! I loved it,!!thanks for shaer us your nice ideas💐
Fantastic, interesting artist, so scrupulous with his materials. Great questions about the details of his process. Thanks!
??? Great questions??? Surely you were watching a different interview. This interviewer should perhaps consider a career in law, maybe some sort of prosecutor? Some profession where you are encouraged to badger others?
I would like to know the interviewers focus. Was she trying to sell his work and wanted specific info about the materials he used? She is obviously not an artist. I feel she has some ulterior motive. He is such a sweetheart! I would study with him in a second.
Beautiful art and artist. I wish she would have not rushed him so
Gorgeous work!!
Beautiful work x
O!M!G! … Brilliant, beautiful and SO (VERY!) inspiring! New fan here! Can’t wait to see everything. This is so inspiring,
This artist is so amazing!
Fascinating intricate work
Beautiful work. A testament to 10,000 hours.
Duality personified!
Beautiful!!
love
beautiful
Great :) thank you very much ♡
Amazing 🎉
I agree with some of the other comments about the abrupt, almost rude interviewer. Still the voice of the lovely artist came through.
"Think Long Island First" was run by Jolanta Zamecka (clinical psychologist!) and Ewa Rumprecht (musicologist). Both live in Oyster Bay, the same community as this artist John Digby. "Think Long Island First" closed down in Dec 2012
It probably closed down because no one wanted to be interviewed by the woman conducting this interview. Ghastly.
I think his art is fabulous but the interviewer is extremely RUDE!!! Pushy and non caring!!! Wow
omg the lady kept rushing him... but Mr John Digby is an amazing collage artist and very informative.
J'adore ce travail artistique.
I would love to spend a day in his studio. We could learn so much...appreciate the interviewer tried to keep help. Thank you both!
... so elucidating to listen to a HU ) pers.lingo :: person/indiv : ' human unit " ( working on a level of such inspiration, while atstIMe utter humility ...
Lovely Collagist John Digby and awesome work!! The interviewer clearly should find another job. Terribly impatient. I would have liked to hear the Artist speak without being constantly interrupted. Maybe someone else can do another Interview with John Digby...he is so talented.
I wish he was able to make his own video and just talk, I think he had a lot of valuable things to say that got lost in this interview. The treasure is in the process, not just the final piece and I don't think the interviewer understood that.
I think it was an amazing look into John’s work and process. As for the interviewer I think she kept him on track but would have been better just to allow him his thoughts and then edited the interview later. Still if it wasn’t for her and john working together I would have never got the amazing opportunity. Thank you both.
Yes I agree, he need gentle promoting, but she isn't a professional & doesn't have the attitude for interviews.... Even though she may well meaning.
@07:12 What is the nene of the paper? Octuara paper?
Oh what a great and sweet artist is John! thanks you are so inspiring! The interviewer ....no comment, just rude. what is she rushing for?
This interviewer is disgustingly rude! The man stutters. Please shut up and let him talk!
John, Are you making collage ?
Very sweet, passionate man into what he loves but the Interviewer comes across impatient and not a people type person. I love 💓 Collaging, but could not precede watching the video because of her demeanor towards Him.
Can somebody please shortly explain his process to me?? Because of the interviewers interrupteptions I didnt get it. What paste is he talking about (that will ruin the bristles???
From his accent, he must be English. I would like to have found out about his life and why he's now in upstate NY.
Yes he is British.....
She is so rude. Sir l love your work and of course all your library. BEAUTIFUL Art.
Amazing work John. The Interviewer was probably on a time schedule, I personally found her fine, John has a slight stutter so he may have seemed harassed which I hope was not the case. She asked all of the questions I wanted to know. Thanks
I would love to see an interview with him, done by a civilized person. How rude!
عظيم جون
2 cute...
I couldn’t understand anything because her impatience attitude. It is uncomfortable to see how she pushed him to explain the process without letting him enjoy the moment. She is rude or has not experience doing interviews or maybe she doesn’t want to spend time during the editing?????
Someone needs to edit this interview so it's just the artist speaking.. Edit this terribly rude interviewer out 🙏
🙏🏼
have just watched this in 2023, this artist is a treasure. However the interviewer was completely disrespectful. I am ashamed for her.
Tommy Cooper's little brother?.
Amazing artist and was fascinated with the process that he uses. What a shame the interviewer was such an ugly distraction, with her pushy, rude 'style'.
... humility personified meater embossed arrogance exemplified ...
She is a MONSTER! She needs to find a different occupation where she has no contracts to interview, disgusting!
Would like to see more of his art close up. The interviewer makes this a very painful video to watch - hopefully she learned something from the process ... a little patience perhaps? The interviewer was extremely disrespectful and I hope I never encounter another one of her interviews.
🙏🏼
Horrific interviewer!
Great artist love his pieces even though she didn't even bother to really focus the camera on the works to be appreciated in detail
Very interesting Artist......the interviewer is rude.
That woman is incredibly offensive. Don't understand why she's interviewing this gentleman if she won't allow him to speak without being rushed and share his magic freely. WTH He's fascinating!
The interviewer should have helped
Had to pause the video at 4:50, his work is beautiful and his soul seems to be the same, but I can not listen any further to this horrible woman interrogate him! I was cringing!! Hope I can find a better interview of this lovely artist.
wonderful art! wonderful artist! terrible interviewer---she needs to learn patience with older people. He didn't get a chance to share his genius because she didn't let him
Essa entrevistadora está totalmente despreparada para entrevistar alguém. Espero que ela tejha trocado de profissão. Disgust!!!!
So rude how awful she was
Agree with the rest, would love to just have him be able to speak freely. the interviewer really is rude and makes it seem so so rushed and uncomfortable
Sounds like the interviewer is only there for her three minutes of fame. I feel sorry for the man, as he is being rushed, took time for this woman, and was nothing but rude. What lovely work John has accomplished and what imagination. I hope John Digby was not taken advantage of.
She use great a lot but she has no feeling towards his unbelievable art work 😮
WOW! He may not want to tell ALL of his secrets. Is the interviewer running out of battery time? It could be me, but the "interviewer" gives me anxiety. As an artist, please don't override me if I am taking time to SHARE my time...
If she is in such a hurry hurry mode , she shouldn’t do this interview at all
