  • Independence Day is upon us! Independence Day 2---I mean, Independence Day Resurgence, directed by Roland Emmerich, and starring Jeff Goldblum, Jessie T. Usher, Liam Hemsworth, and Bill Pullman definitely has many a fan really excited to see aliens, action, and even a little bit of comedy from this sequel. However, the DT podcast crew will not forget Roland Emmerich's previous blunders such as Godzilla, the first Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, or even 2012. Will Emmerich deliver us some Michael Bay type bull crap? Or will we invade the movie theater after this movie review?

The problem was for this movie: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE kind of movies in a long awaited sequel
that Roland Emmerich just losing his edge. I loved disaster flicks from Earthquake (1974) to Armageddon (1998).
Until this movies confusing me with too much of going on and it didn't focusing the characters and it's story.
It's not the worst I ever seen but I give this a RENTAL! Roland, you just loosing your mojo, man.

I just watched Independence Day: Resurgence. I didn't have high hopes for this movie and I was neither surprised or let down. It had a lot of the things that made the original one great, but ultimately fell a little flat for me. It appears that there is a new trend along with the sequel trend for directors to take a page out of JJ Abrams and Colin Trevorrow's play book by making a sequel as close to the original as possible. When done well by a skilled director we get movies like Star Wars the Force Awakens, when done moderately well we get movies like Jurassic World, and when done in a passable manner we get ID:R.
ID:R is not a bad movie as a whole and a lot of people will probably like it. All of the original cast members that came back gave great performances. The new cast members not so much. Any scene in this movie with Liam Hemsworth was awful, which basically included the rest of the new cast members as well. I don't blame Liam Hemsworth he seems to be a fine enough actor, when there is a shitty performance I blame the director. Any scene where Liam Hemsworth or anybody else is flying a jet is cringe-worthy. It is like watching someone over acting and reacting while driving a car at 5 miles an hour. It's pretty clear that no one in this movie has ever been in a jet or even watched a pilot flying a jet. They don't whip their heads around and scream the whole time. Why don't they do this? Because flying a jet is hard and the g-forces you get while flying at those speeds don't allow a person to move a whole lot and they're strapped in pretty tightly. Basically any of the scenes with Liam Hemsworth completely pulled me out of the movie. Liam Hemsworth and the new black guy are supposed to fill Will Smith's shoes in this movie. I will give credit where credit's due and say that the lack of Will Smith left a hole in this movie. A Will Smith size hole cannot be filled with two barely known actors.
Despite the flaws that movie is still a great popcorn movie, just don't expect to be amazed. The dialogue, story, and even the acting were a little thin and hollow at times.
    2 out of 5 Stars.

They're 100% right and said exactly what I said. They just got extremely lazy with the writing of this movie which is the biggest issue with this film. It was cheesy, all over the place with so much going on, some of the acting was just atrociously bad. It was just a movie that was put together very lazy and it showed.

Now this is my opinion so don't hate me for it, but I watched both of these movies in the same night and I actually liked the second one better. Don't get me wrong I loved the original but this one I felt like did sooo much better. The only things I really missed was the AWESOME speech in this movie, like how the first the president gave an awesome speech, this one didn't they just repeated the old speech a lot. The other thing I missed was Will Smith, and I thought the way he "died" was stupid, they said it was a flight training accident. I was telling my sister walking out of the theater they should of at least said like, "He is in New York now." Then show a scene of New York getting blown up signifying he died. Also you guys should do a review of a movie sometime with Gus Sorola and Burnie Burns.

Movie was meh, I'd rather have Roland Emmerich worked with David Spade and Kurt Russell for a no kidding Stargate sequel for the 1994 film, ignore completely the TV shows. I know I am alone on this, but I'd rather had that than a sequel for a film that in my opinion did not needed one. The ending, acting, and the overall cinematic experience was to me lightning in a bottle. It was the Star Wars experience from the 90s. I really felt sick watching this, not even Bent Spinner or Jeff Goldbloom saved the movie for me. The whole thing looked fake as hell, I still feel goosebumps when the motherships start falling into Earth's atmosphere in the first film. I refuse to watch this sequel to this day.

They actually do tell you how Will Smith's Hiller died. they show it at the start in that quick brief overview of what happened inbetween. He died test piloting one of the first fully fledged hybrid fighter jets (the ones they eventually use en-masse) as the engine malfunctioned and because it was so risky wouldn't let someone else take the risk.

    • @martin43427
      @martin43427 8 років тому

I saw it on the weekend. What a horrible horrible movie. One of the worst movies I've seen in quiet awhile.

I saw this turd and that's being generous. The first film wasn't great but this one is just bad. Devoid of any memorable characters. A plot that makes no sense. Good sci-fi should either make us think or be fun. The Matrix. Blade Runner. Moon. The underrated Puppet Masters (the one with Donald Sterling).

Corey, you have to stop saying Independence Day and Star Wars in the same frase. It hurts...

I give it a low Matinee myself. It's just as dumb as the first but keep your expectations low and you'll enjoy it.

I dunno man, I wasn't a fan of the first film but I feel this is much more horrible than that film. I had fun because there were some unintentional laugh out loud moments for me (and some audience members in my theater), and it just was silly to the point of being mind-numbingly dull. And the characters(majority) were just so thinly written without any personality or arks. I give points to Goldblum cause he's still charismatic as hell, but everyone was bland and boring.

What all I'm hearing is that if the first movie came out today, you would say the exact same thing. This to me could be an issue of changing movie standards/expectations in the last 20 years. The things movies could get away with back then, you can't do it today. From a 90s perspective, I thought this movie was right in line with what we had back then.

After watching this movie, I can't for the life of me remember the name of any of the new characters except the Warlord. They were just so bland and boring. They really wanted discount Chris Pines to look cool and he wasn't.

they know, in fact Goodwin (or tommy) told them about it. go watch their trailer talk on it, they bring it up. their focusing on the REAL reason here.

plus, they pointing out how the movie doesn't tell the audience, which might be a bad thing as people usually don't go the official film sight, only the fans.

Here's my question.. How'd Dr. Okun come back to life. He died in the 1st movie, how'd he come back. Plus, Why'd the aliens wait for 20 yrs to come back

I call BS. He was blue. If he had a pulse, don't you think his assistant would've called for medical assistance, but he never did. He checked his pulse and found nothing. Your logic is flawed.

They had Will Smiths characters death happen on a website promoting the film at the time. Apparently he died while testing out those alien jets we see in this one... But honestly this movie wasn't that bad IMO it was entertaining. It was fine 😂

Did they expand on the aliens? I'm more interested in them than the rest of the film. No one's talking about them.
