You cross your chains for encase the tongue of the trailer comes off the ball hitch. If this occurs, the tongue will fall onto the cross X of the two chains and not strike the ground.
Nice to know, been doing it for years and never knew why...
Not going to argue your point but, the real reason has to do with physics. With the chains crossed, when turning, they remain very close to the same elevation off the ground. If they are hooked inline, the chain to the inside of your turn would droop and possibly drag while the opposite chain would be stretched.
10-4 on that
what they said^^^^^^^^.
Most state laws for towing a trailer require you to cross chains. Safety factor.
Chains on your trailer are crossed because if it becomes unhitched from the tow vehicle, the crossed chains will keep the hitch from hitting the ground. In theory.
They do exactly that. Seen a video of an actual tongue detachment and the chains cradled the tongue. Terrifying to see at 65mph, amazed to see it actually work.
You're working a lot of hours Laura. Between the harvest work, filming and editing you are really busy. Thanks for taking the time to share all of this with us. Good night. 🙏
I wonder where she gets her film developed?
😂
I guessed 250 gallons. Wow, off by 50 gals.
Farmers are the toughest of the tough.
Thank you for your service.
We appreciate you.
Non-Farmer 'city boy' here.... LOVE your videos, Thanks for explaining your farm lifestyle, equipment and procedures.
I think you hired a good person when you hired Gage. He puts in a full day of school plus football practice, then shows up to work his shift. He seems dedicated and hard working.
Thank you for feeding the USA and the world. God Bless the American Farmers .🙏❤🙏
No chance of me getting bored with your blog. Pure entertainment plus educational to boot.... Can't believe how fast the kittens are growing. lol.....Keep the vids coming...,.
Thank You Laura and Grant !! For the great harvest video's !!
Does being in the combine for hours at a time ever make you guys sleepy? I mean the soft hum of the combine, the random beeps. It’s very ASMR’ish 😂
For blue tooth back up camera, try "I ball". Works great.
I say 312 gallons!! I love watching your harvesting videos, you and Grant work so hard during harvest season and long hours of driving those combines and many bushels of corn, beans and wheat. Thank you for so you do to help feed this country.
Thank you so much for letting us follow the harvest season at your farms. As a boy from the country site here in Denmark I know it is really really hard work. I hope the weather will be with you all for the rest of the harvest season.
I thoroughly enjoyed today's video Laura. It was nice going along with you and Grant and you provided good insights into all the activity. I loved the final shots of the kittens out exploring, they are cuties! You are gaining on your subscriber goal and I hope you achieve it by end of harvest. Have a good and productive week and be safe. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.
I was on the highway and hit a big bump that knocked my hitch off the ball. The crossed chains were able to catch the hitch and I could pull over safely and get things straightened out. Always cross your chains!
Thanks for all the videos you've been putting out lately. I really don't watch much tv anymore so now I just watch Laura Farms!
Lol New Zealand TV has become absolute dog doo doo. Laura Farms is a lifesaver. Always uplifts. Never fails. Absolute gem.
@@darylneal989, David down in Christchurch here! - Yeah I totally agree, and gave up on NZ TV back in 2019. Don't miss it at all!
I too watch Laura and Grant everyday, plus my other favourite YT channels. Much more interesting and entertaining, especially learning about the crop harvests, farm life and inner workings of these big JD beasts! 😀
It was a joy for me to see the fuel filler with a lock that lets the thing work hands free. Your fuel cart fills me with envy. 😉😉All the self service petrol/gas stations in Oz started getting rid of the lock about 25 years ago. The safety goons decided that we're all to stupid to be able to handle a trigger lock. It's such a pain to have to stand there holding the thing and squeezing the trigger while you're filling.
I AM AN 81YR. OLD X dairy farmer and I just want say you are one fantastic woman, keep it up. Thanks for sharing all your work
Laura, this video was most enjoyable, it was always good to see you and Grant working together, now we get to see it all the time.
Love from Mike. ❤
Just watched the show where you are backing up to hook up the fuel trailer. From an old farmer. Before unhooking the trailer place a 2x4 one foot long behind the rest tire of your truck then just back up to the 2x4 to hook back up it will perfect every time. 😅
Not here to tell you that you did something wrong. Great content! Trailer tip. It has always helped me once you are close. To leave the door open and watch the ground move when you back up to get precise distance… drag your boot and leave a mark if you have a doubt as how far you need to back up 😊
Lots of fuel for all that Equipment!!!!!!! 🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
It almost sounds like Grant might have to get a Case Combine for Laura lol 😂
Thank you, thank you, atom.
We pray for a great harvest for you and Grant 🙏
As far as pumpkins go? A few farms here have pumpkins and Butternut squash growing throughout their corn. I'm sure some get run over, but its always interesting to see a field full of pumpkins or Butternut squash and corn stubble after harvest. The next part is done by hand. Semi truck into the field and a few guys. Some pick-up and toss them into/ onto the trailer. Others will be stacking. Move the truck a bit and do it again. Enjoy.
Fall harvest has always been my favorite time of the year. It helps me remember when my Dad and i were in the field at the same time.
A system that I use since I don't have a backup camera, is that I have a magnetic rod that I place on the ball receiver of the trailer to align my ball hitch with another on the bumper that allows me to get as close to possible the correct distance for the hitch.
I also use a long magnetic rod that I can sight with a defined center line. Additionally my trailer jack is electrically operated from trailer power connector on my truck. I am hauling a much lighter trailer than Laura's fuel trailer.
That yard sprinkler is OLD! Had one when I was a kid in Minnesota. That was in the mid to late 60's. My mom loved it b/c it moved the right speed for the moisture the yard needed.
Beautiful sunset! Thnx guys!
Laura, I so love your smile! Reminds me of Reba McEntire’s. Just makes my day.
It's over 55 years since I drove tandem wagons.
(T-W-W) just hay bails.
Thank you for your hard work! I’m an engineer who hauls lots of grain trains to the port! Hard working farmers like you guys keep us fed and working!
When I back up to my boat trailer get out and check and I’m close I make a mark on the ground next to the cab the distance I need as a gauge…works most of the time😂
2:15 - Cross your chains so if the ball breaks the tongue will fall onto the chains and not dig into the pavement and possibly flip over. Also if you have a jack with a wheel you should lift it all the way up and turn it slightly to the right. If it comes down on the jack it will roll off the side of the road.
It was great to see that baby tractor, I have had one since the eighties and am on my original tracks. And I still love it every spring, and sad when I put it away in the fall.
Hair and Nails Laura.......👌👌👌! Ohhh and Vice Grip Hack👍!!!!!
200 gal good video, thanks
Looking forward to experiencing the harvest with you guys.......
Pepper is a smart cat.
You cross your chains so is the trailer comes loose from the ball, the tongue will drop down into the 'X' you made crossing the chains. That way the tongue won't hit the ground.
Ideally, it would swing under your bumper and not damage the trailer or the tow vehicle.
If you don't cross them, the tongue would hit the ground and the chains would drag the trailer after it digs into the road.
Bingo! My 300 gallon guess was pretty good. Might be and indication that I'm watching too many farming channels. LOL!
Put marks on the ground to reference your distance or get telescope magnets one for the ball and one for the hitch
If it comes unhooked the chains crossed will help the trailer from swinging back and forth and to keep it behind the toeing truck
Hell no never get bored of harvest and watching the combine at work and what does on around the farm cheer's.
If you watch how the chains react as you go around a corner you will see the other reason, and probably more importantly, we cross the chains.
All the best for harvest.

I have a long stick of wood with a magnet so it stick to top of ball when the stick moves your over the ball it really works
if your beans are 'blown over', try a different direction with the combine - when the stems lean AWAY from the combine, the reels have an easier time getting the stalks upright (esp for comb-style reels); controlled feed = less plugging...
Bored with stuff like this? Not a chance at all, we love it in this household - very much and say, keep it coming all day/night long. Kitten snuggles included (Grant included).
Harvest time again! Hope it all goes well!!
I sure won't get bored with harvest videos. Keep them coming!!
Thanks for all the good info on farming! Must be satisfying to see the fruits of your labor? so proud of you & Grant. Y'all are what farming is all about ! See you next time.
I love watching the harvesting !
No.... I never get bored by the stuff you post. It is very grounding in this crazy world, and I always look forward to it. I wish you much success with your fall harvest!
GOOD JOB FOR THE GREEK
Cross your Saftey chains in case the Trailer comes unhooked that was the cross chains will hold The Trailer up instead of Digging into The ground . ❤
Because I'm a fan, I truly appreciate you and Grant taking the time out to make the videos.
Today I learned that you need to cross the chains when you hitch, that you're Combine uses upwards of 300 gallons per fill, that the soybean stalks being wet are what clogs your combine, and that you need to check your equipment whenever you can to avoid issues. I also learned that the fuzzy crap on the outside of a soybean becomes airborne during harvest and clings to everything in the worst way possible.
Love, love, love the kittenz.
If you ever need someone to just record video of the kittenz, I would make the trip in a heartbeat.
Beautiful sunset love that.
That was a great one! Up close and personal with the combine. I always see them from the highway as these big machines, no idea what goes on behind the body work. Fascinating, once again.
Backing is easy! Just follow the trailer.
When I back up to a trailer I do two things. One is to use the outside rear view mirrors to look at the sides of the trailer and the sides of the truck. When the sides of the truck are in line with the trailer are equal I' back up. When I think I'm close I stop backing and go back to see how I'm doing. Let's say I think I'm a foot short.. I go back to the cab and leave the door open. I look down at the ground and pick a stone or a shoe mark or any handy mark on the ground and then I back up as much as I remember from looking at the distance between the ball and the hitch.
Okay Laura. Loved when you were in the tractor adjusting the seat and you gave us a view of your jeans. True farmer's jeans with dirt probably some grease on them, etc!
Thanks guys
26:32 gorgeous sun set!! Growing up in Lincoln and visiting family in Seward, Utica & Goehner... I so miss those views and them iconic dirt roads. Don't see that beautiful scenery down around Atlanta...
Feeding the world, great job guys. !!😊🙂😀😊
As a former Mississippi Delta farm boy, I enjoy watching your videos. You should think about adding a drone to document your field adventures. Daniel does this on @TripleRFarms and it's a great addition to his channel. God bless you!
So hardworking couple 👍so nice smile 😁?
thank you laura and grant
No chatter or earbuds have saved our farm countless thousands of dollars as my brothers and I are able to feel and hear any out of the ordinary vibrations or noises before they become major on our cotton pickers and combines. I have one brother who never plugs a combine or cotton picker because he is so in tune with the machinery. I still miss the field suppers of my youth when my grandmother and mom made fantastic meals, and Sunday dinners after church in the morning were truly devine. Keep up the great work.
@25:24 Green beans ? 😂
Love your videos thank you so much ❤
Tandem trailers are hard to manhandle even if they are empty. Just keep trying I love my backup camera. Off-Road Diesel here in Texas is going for $3.50 / gallon going up.
I love the whole working together thing. I see a lot of nice ladies introducing stuff that they know nothing about. You two are in harmony and building a life. First class.
An adventure everytime!!
Thanks!!
C ya on the next video!
👍🦊🧙♂️🐺👍
Thank you Laura, the best harvest videos! is awesome how you share all the hard work you, Grant and all the people involved do every day. You´re an excellent team! and this is just the beginning.
Enjoy all your videos. Look forward to many more harvest videos in particular.
Thanks 👍 guys for sharing. Looking forward to a great season with you guys 😜. Be safe ☺️.
Never get bored with any of your videos no matter what the subject is. Keep them coming, it's my relaxing time.
Thanks to you and Grant.
Yet another great Laura Farms video, keep 'em coming Grant & Laura!
We all need the gospel everyday! Farming in the east is Soo different. We farmed a few years in nw Wisconsin. Mom was very sick, so we had to come back to ne pa. No longer have parents or grand parents. Sorry for your loss. Hope to talk to Laura & Grant more. Privately very soon!
Enjoyed watching the video Laura and Grant 😊
ALWAYS have a couple pairs of leather gloves in the combine. They will save your hands, the bean straw will destroy hands. Nothing boring about harvesting, I've done it for 50 years, fun to watch someone else doing it.
amazing cool highlight of the day
I'm glad to follow you on your adventures of farming. It's very interesting to see where our food comes from
About 5yrs ago I removed a engine from a masy combine and put it in the farm truck and still use it today great job and video God bless from GA stay safe
Awesome video Laura. You offer so much extra info, it's cool. Thanks for all we see. Good job
Thanks for your video, its awesome. Love harvestseason. Stay safe.
Never bored you guys!!!❤
I’ve recently discovered that in my small Honda generator, ethanol is a huge culprit to carburetor plugging. It turns to water I a tank so I now only running 4cycle clean gas w/o ethanol. My lawn mower also runs much better on non ethanol fuel. Storage of fuel is a tricky deal!
Glad to see you're back in the tractor starting to cut down I love watching all your checking in to see what you were up to and you're a farmer it's long long days and a lot of work I know you loving it back up in the tractor
Love your channel, Laura! I don’t watch as much as I like, but I learn something every time I do. 🙏❤️❤️🙏
It's always been supper in my 71 yrs....👍👍👍🙏
Was fun and interesting, thanks for the combine walk around from the roof!😊
Never get tired of hard work it makes for great prosperity. Love your videos all the time.
a great trick that we use in our operation, is that on the pickup truck beds on the inside, we put a piece of tape where the center is. Then we when unhook the trailers, we put a board behind the back wheels before we unhook so that you know where to backup to. I think it helps to make quick work when your in a rush.
When attaching chains to a vehicle, always cross the chains. Crossing the trailer chains aids in turning the trailer by reducing the probability of stress. It also acts as a cradle in the event of separation from the tow vehicle.
Great to see your harvest 2023 keep videos coming .
Love the content! Thnx for sharing!!
I have it from a good authority (my wife) that ladies don't actually sweat, they perspire.
Lol, women “glow”
Those Bean stems look pretty green to be harvesting. Good luck with your fall 2023 harvest.
That's was an awesome video! I love harvesting rice!
