  • When the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s Ukraine was one of the largest new nations to emerge. It held its first elections in 1991.
    Bordered by Russia on the east and by Hungary, Poland and Slovakia on the west, politics in Ukraine have always been divided along those looking east towards Russia and those looking to the West.
    Putin has said that Ukraine is “ancient Russian soil” but the majority of Ukrainians don’t feel this way, with 68% of Ukrainians in favour of joining the EU.

    Interestingly, didn’t Hitler say that Austrians and Germans were one people and that they used to all be a part of a single unit historically just before he annexed Austria in 1938? If my history classes serve me right, back then, the world also condemned the actions and watched the events unfold. We never learn from the past.

      By the time then, that was correct. The Republic of Austria was a souvereign state, yet its people were considered (and considered themselves) a German people.
      Austria proper had been a German state eversince. A sentiment of being an Austrian, rather than a German nation, only really developed after World War II, not before it.

I had 80% of the command staff there were Ukrainians. They were based in Crimea at the collapse of the USSR, refused to take the Ukrainian oath and were sent to the North of Russia. Can you imagine what it's like to exchange the warm Black Sea for the Barents Sea and live in a military closed garrison? They went for it. Therefore, Ukrainians are divided into 2 categories. They were talking so loud about this war and that Russia will pay for this, but reality is opposite: my relatives are suffering from rockets(based on their words on phone call) and whole words actually aren't doing anything specifically to solve this problem. Just some sanctions against Russia which doesn't affect them at all. The president was right about this line : "how you'll defend yourself if your help to Ukraine is so slow?(words which refer to other countries of Europe and US.) I also apologize for probable mistakes in my English as it's 4th language I know. I must clarify one thing : I don't hate any person of Europe or US, I'm just talking about the leaders of these countries and Europe parliament. Thanks for your attention!

      The NATO is the biggest lie in country relations. American political acts are made for only their profit. Honestly I have to say that the Americans and the whole NATO filled your heads with air. They don't care about people. The NATO alliance is a buble. And as soon as Ukraine is not yet in NATO, it would be the best for your country to never enter NATO. I have heard that there is corrapsy in your country, and that every politic is speaking about the benefits of entering the EU and the NATO. Also, I read that indeed as Putin said, there is dictatoral act if somebody tries to say the opposite, for example that the EU is not as it is presented to us. There is a plan to get your country under their control with the same prophacy, that you will have growth and a better economy. As also a modern Ukrainian saint said some years ago (Starets Jonas) "the West people will make the Ukrainians believe them. They will inflate Ukranians' minds. That also will be our end. Russia will raze us".
      Honestly, how did you think that you can get against Russia? You are the same people! Don't refuse that. Let it happen peacefully otherwise in NATO you wouldn't find true peace. Be sure that Putin is not your real enemy. The Americans dividied all the slavian people (and in Yugoslavia, and in Eastern Europe). ΝΑΤΟ is also the reason why Cyprus is dividied from Greece. The Americans never helped Cyprus during the Turkish invasion on Cyprus. They DON'T care. It's for your best I believe for you, to be united with Russians and have peace because you deserve it. Be strong and have your mind clear my dear.

The southeastern regions of modern Ukraine in the Russian Empire were called Novorossiya (New Russia) and Little Russia (Little Russia). Deputies of the Central Rada of the UPR secretly called Austro-Hungarian troops to their territory in Brest in April 1918, who entered the UPR and then occupied the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog and Odessa republics of Russia.
      In 1918, from January 12, 1918 to May 20, 1922, the countries of the Entente and the Central Powers (the Quadruple Alliance) carried out military intervention in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922/23) on the side of the White Movement. Italy - Murmansk, Siberia and the Far East (Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk). Greece - Odessa. Romania - occupation of Bessarabia. Poland - Murmansk, (the Soviet-Polish war of 1919-1920, the Polish army, the underground "Polish military organization"). Japan - Vladivostok, the section of the Trans-Siberian railway from Verkhneudinsk to Khabarovsk and Iman, Sakhalin, Blagoveshchensk-on-Amur. China did not actively participate in the intervention, the Far East, Transbaikalia, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk. As well as the Serbian battalion, the Finnish Karelian Legion (Karelian Regiment) and the Finnish Murmansk Legion and the Danish Volunteer battalion.
      After the defeat of the troops of Denikin, Wrangel, Krasnov, Yudenich and Kolchak, they were all expelled from the territory of Russia in 1920-1921. In 1922, with the formation of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian People's Republic, Donetsk-Krivoy Rog and Odessa Republics were united into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic with its capital in Kiev.
      From 1654 to 1917, Russian territories were ceded to Ukraine - Volyn, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Sumy, Ternopil, Kiev, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, Cherkasy and Poltava regions. In 1922, with the formation of the USSR, the Kharkiv, Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Odessa and Mykolaiv regions moved to Ukraine. In 1939, according to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, upon the return of Russian territories and after the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, the Lviv, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernihiv regions retreated to Ukraine.

      5real. With that said, I don't know if we can reasonably expect any other way. The history of invasion and intervention seems to indicate that the invader/intervener will be extremely hard-pressed to provide the society being intervened on a better future. Certainly it has happened successfully, but it is far easier to come up with an almost endless list of acute and even abject humanitarian catastrophes following invasions/interventions, no matter if the intentions was good or bad or mixed. Even then, society tends to find a way to survive or it even bounces back in a new form, but still there are those that lie ruined for long periods of time or cease to exist. I think it's totally right to say groups that feel more identified with each other will tend to be more likely to risk intervention (e.g. caucasians, people of the same language, nations in closer proximity, or any other way humans are grouped). Don't you?

    If you decide to watch this video for informational purposes, please take into consideration the following:
    - it is incorrect to say that politics in Ukraine is divided into solely pro-russian and pro-European sides. We have multiple political parties that are able to take part in the elections, it is not a two-party system;
    - 68% of the population supporting Ukraine's joining the EU does not presuppose that the remaining 32% support close political and diplomatic relations with russia. Many people nowadays are of the opinion that Ukraine should remain on its own and not join any unions;
    - saying that Ukrainian nation emerged after the collapse of the USSR is a blatant disrespect towards our historical heritage and the display of plain ignorance on the part of the presenter. The USSR was never a homogeneous creation despite all the efforts to make it look so, and a part of Ukrainians always harboured the hope to get back the country's independence that it was brutally robbed of when russia once again decided it had the right to decide for somebody else. The Ukrainian culture, language, and history were born a long time ago and have been evolving for many years, and so what you call a nation was neither created during the soviet times nor after them.
    This topic is difficult to comprehend for those who don't know much about the history of this side of the globe. To get a better understanding of it, think of Ukraine as a country that has been oppressed by colonizers for a very long time. Most of the time the worst colonizer was russia in all its forms, be it the russian empire, the USSR, or the russian federation. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean that previously there wasn't any Ukrainian nation. On the contrary, our cultural identity was shaped by all the tragedies and unfairness that we had to endure, so thinking that we are a young nation is an incredibly foolish thing to do. Don't make this mistake, don't be like putin.

      Ukraines physical border has been roughly what it currently is (prior to the invasion) for thousands of years.
      Ukrainian and Russian are two different languages, like Spanish and Portugese, and when you look at the history of Ukraine we have never really been associated with Russia prior to 1700.
      Prior to 1700 Ukraine and Poland had a shared governance, heritage and culture.
      That's why as a Ukrainian I can speak and understand some Polish, but I don't understand Russian at all.

You forgot to mention that it is was not France but Russia who also "gave some guarantees of sovereignty to Ukraine". It was all OK in Ukraine till 2014. Russians and Ukrainians were brother people. Ukrainians voted for pro-Russian President whose election promises included making Russian as the second state language of Ukraine. But he was outthrown by Banderas from the Western Ukraine in 2014. Not without our American help, of course. What Western Ukrainians have to do with the main-land Ukraine since they were incorporated into Ukraine only in 1945 thanks to comrade Stalin? After 600 years of Polish rule. And now we Americans and the world sees the collapse of the "Ukrainian nation".

      Significant parts of Ukraine have longer been under Polish rule than Russian, a fact that is often blinked out when Russia puts claims on everything it had its feet on for longer than a few minutes. There, the local religion of the orthodox church was accepted, Ruthenian the official language (although as common in pre-modern Europe, Polish was the noble language), while under Russia, things went poorly going back at least 2 centuries.
      Nowadays, Russia pats itself for telling the narrative of significant amounts of Russian speakers but aggressive cultural assimilation and settlement policies (often carried out by Imperial nations at that time), replaced or devoured the Ruthenians as it happened with many other minorities within the Russian Empire/Soviet Union.
      But languages can't erase cultural heritage and the history of that region dates back longer than the history of the Muscovites.

    For those, who are looking for historical comparison, pay attention to how Cino-japanese long war 1931-1945 went and ended. First Japanese annexed Manchuria(Crimea and Donbass), establishing puppet state. Next, there was a long pause. No one helped chinese, both sides were preparing for final confrontation. On 1937, provocation on Marco-Polo brige. Japanese flamed China for aggression and started full invasion, that ended up only at the end of WWII. Chinese lost millions of people, but never surrender. I don't blame japanese for their past, but back in the day, they were on wrong side of history. Today, they learned their lesson, so will russian one day. But first, they need to be defeated and went through deputinization.

      There ain't that many sources on slavic people. Might have been Soviet propaganda rewriting history. or maybe slavs just didn't leave that much historic evidence.
      Modern history books usually start with the formation of the Kievan Rus out of different slavic tribes sometime in late 800's AD, though as of that moment there even weren't such nations as Russians or Ukrainians, just Rus people. So technically there is no ancient history according to modern history, as the Rus nation has been formed in medieval era. Though the land thats called Ukraine now was also controlled by Polish people, but historical evidence we have access to suggests that the Kingdom of Poland has been formed in early 1000's AD. Even though Ukrainian ancestric nations didn't have any ancient history, you can still look up eastern/western slavic medieval history, it's an interesting read nonetheless, since the land that would later be called Ukraine has seen a lot of changes.
