Speaking from experience and yes thats a huge red flag . She didnt let me look at the mirror at all until she was done. I felt so much hair falling and cutting off so i had my doubts. I got a pixie cut instead of a bobline ( long front and short from the back) I cried then and there. I didnt want to pay but had to anyways. :(

Being “new” is no excuse..if you can’t cut hair you shouldn’t be there. I’ve had so many hair salon fails that I’ve cut my own hair for 30 odd years, looks no better but no worse😎👍

    I feel for you.
I’ve been doing my own hair for years and one day, I thought I would treat myself to a salon visit… She left the bleach on my very long hair for over an hour and it burnt off! I was so upset. I had to learn the hard way that, I’m more than my hair. Tbh, it’s still a struggle.
I think you’re beautiful and your hair is a very small part of what makes you beautiful.❤

That's why I don't go to hairdressers anymore. The majority suck. The one that made me terrified to go back was when this guy used a dull razor blade on my strands. He was tugging so hard he ripped out a ton of hair and my entire scalp was bleeding. My head hurt for days. I had scabs all over. Imagine that fool touching a child's head? I learned my lesson the hard way. My bf trims my hair now and he is waaaaaay better. Plus, he listens and is very gentle.

Yes, the style is cute on you, but it’s not what you went in for. Plus, you had a picture. Pictures are wonderful, but your hairdresser should still take the time to discuss with you exactly WHAT PART OF THE PICTURE you like. Could be just the length. Could be the swing. COULD BE THE COLOR!!! I’ve been a hairdresser for 36 years, and I never take a picture at face value. You’re right. She sounds young and new to the business. Trust me. This is one experience she will never forget and has learned a lot from. If you’ve learned anything, it’s explain everything you like and dislike in a picture. If she doesn’t want to take the time with you, then you have the wrong hairdresser for you. But seriously, while you are waiting for it to grow out, some light, sandy blonde highlights would look fabulous on you!!!!

Holy moly! I relate to this so much, when I was 5 my hair was waist length but because it's thick and dense it started to fall out so my mom decided it was time for a cut and I said can I keep it above my shoulders and she said she would, when we arrive at the hairdresser my hair was up in a braid and she told the stylist to cut the whole thing, her motive? she wanted to keep the braid 😩. I ended up with short poofy hair looking like a poodle with kids constantly saying I was wearing a wig. I love my mom but to this day I haven't let go of this and I'm 46 now, probably why I have some trust issues lol.

Some salon owners will tell new stylist NOT to tell clients you are new. How do I know? I know cause I was that new stylist who was told by my boss not to tell clients I was new. I was very uncomfortable with doing that, and everything in me was screaming how wrong it was to lie to customers that I actually knew what I was doing and had been doing this for years. I ended up quitting and I wasn't the only one, she made me hate doing hair.

I just had the same experience. I used to cut my own hair for like a year and few days ago decided to visit a salon and let them do the job for me. I really didnt want to cut my hair a lot, just a little. I found a picture of the cut that i wanted and it was a pretty easy one, i could do it too tbh so how could this all go wrong? I showed the picture to the dresser, its a simple shaggy haircut. He explained to me how he was going to cut it and sounded legit. I offered to keep the picture open so he could look at it while cutting but he said that he remembers it well. He started from the back and it was all going well, we had a nice conversation and stuff BUT the moment he started cutting my front hair he literaly messed up bad from the first move. He cut my bangs right up the eyebrows. Im a dude too so giving me that short bangs looks really bad and he kept going cutting my hair on the sides the same way. He was like "bangs are not my style but it looks good on u" DUDE WHAT IS THIS, THATS NOT WHAT I WANTED AT ALL. Before going there I was growing my hair so he could do this cut but he just ruined all of my hair progress. He was also pretty expensive so it was all a waste. I just dont understand how a PROFESIONAL hair dresser can mess up this bad. I showed u a picture dude. It wasnt that hard. How could u let me walk out of the salon like that lmao and pretend it was looking good? Fucking sucks that we have to spend the rest of the days crying about a bad haircut cuz of them. Im never going to a salon ever again. Imma keep on cutting my own hair. This all happened at the worst time and now i have to pay his mistake. I feel so weird looking rn and my confidence has died. Great.

Lmao I got my hair messed up too. I've had a scene hair cut for a while now and it was perfect. But eventually my bangs became too long to the point where I had to pin them over. So when I went to get them trimmed, the girl completely re-did my bangs and cut them from the f*cking top of my head, and they're also too short to cover my eye. She also razored my layers and over did one side. Soooo it takes a lot of effort every day to get it even remotely close to what I want. Will not be going back there.

Same thing happened to me yesterday and i am so upset and mad about this hairdresser like can't even express this feeling(She is related to my aunt and i met her for the first time) .. So what happened is my hair was more lower than waist like it was about to touch my hips and i was growing my hair for like 2 years now only cause i wanted that long steps and nice soft side bangs and i told her what i wanted my hair to look like, i was even about to show her the picture of the haircut i wanted but she denied cause apparently she understood every single thing i told her, like she was so confident and was like yeah i know you don't want your hair length to get short n all and i trusted her but guess what she ruined my confidence with that haircut, i wanted those long steps and she made my hair length to my shoulders. Tbh that haircut is not that bad but it doesn't suit my face structure like it doesn't suit me at all. When she took the first step i knew for sure she is going to mess up but still i wasn't able to say anything to her cause my aunt is a karen, like i saw my hair gettin ruined in front of my eyes and was able to do nothing. I really don't understand like is it that hard to accept that you don't know this certain thing like this hairdresser, she pretended like she understood every thing and then proceeded to give me a whole different haircut...😭😭
    I am crying now.....

I realize this is a 3 year old video and so by now I hope that this awful haircut experience is a distant memory and that your hair has grown back long and luscious for you by now! I want to say I think you handled that so well! You handled it way better than I would have! Thank you for being such a kind and thoughtful person! 🙏🏻 having been a new stylist myself before I can actually relate. Because in cosmetology school, they teach us very basic haircuts like for instance- the 90 for cutting layers… it’s where we cut everything at a 90 degree angle. It’s not a cute cut on everyone. The layers are Not really soft or blended. If you cut too much off, or the client wants shorter layers but still wants to leave the length of her hair long… with a 90, the ends Her hair are going to start to look thin and stringy if we take the layers too short. So… not the most beautiful haircut But it’s the cut we all have to learn in order to pass state boards. That’s basically all school was for me was practice and state board preparation. We learn just the very basics during our 1500 hours. The real training comes after the stylist is already licensed (have to be to be able to work on clients) and this is where a lot of young stylists right out of school will assist for awhile to learn from an experienced stylist. That’s what I did. Did a lot of assisting. I wanted to learn everything I possibly could, so I have a chance of actually being successful long term. Bcuz it is ROUGH at first! at first we don’t have any clients yet. And there’s always pressure to try and make money bcuz to sit there all day watching hours tick by is miserable. Building books just takes time.. but I can see where someone might take a service they weren’t 💯 comfortable with… what if her other appointments that day no call no showed and you were the only haircut she was going to get to do that day. I know it seems easy to say someone shouldn’t be cutting hair if they don’t know what they’re doing. But how else does anyone learn? And most of us are Motivated to pay our bills. We don’t make money unless there is a head of hair in our chair to work on. That’s why a lot of stylists seem stressed and like they are rushing. There is soooo much pressure on us (self inflicted mostly, bcuz we want to do good work and we are probably even more nervous than you are about it turning out perfect) but also most of us are empaths (to be in service at all) so we can feel energy coming from the client. Positive energy, appreciation for my hard work and dedication to the details….and seeing their face light up or their self confidence do a 360 when they leave my chair compared to when they came in… that is what I live for. That’s what makes me love my job. It’s the difficult, rude, cranky ppl that make it hard. I’m talking about the ladies who may have an attitude, straight up act like she doesn’t like me or anything I’m doing… or she may be getting bored and antsy and be checking her watch every 3 mins- it’s very hard sometimes to keep cool calm and collected when the energy we are getting from the person we are working on is making us feel uncomfortable. It’s hard to stay regulated when someone is rushing us too. I always end up cutting myself when I’m rushing. It’s hard too when we are already uncomfortable and feeling like the client doesn’t like anything we are doing… so we keep trying to accommodate them… but they’re staring us down in the mirror watching every snip…. With difficult clients like that, It’s hard to keep it together enough emotionally in order to stay focused and get through it. I don’t think clearly when I am on the verge of getting upset myself. And will usually make even more mistakes then because I’m not thinking clearly. I honestly at this point believe that sometimes clients just don’t realize that their behavior or words are insulting. I’m doing my best to do a good job on her hair and make her look her best…. Why on earth would she WANT me to be uncomfortable or upset? I think ppl just don’t realize I can’t wave a magic wand and have them in and out of my chair in 20 mins with the hair of their dreams that looks just like the photo they brought in…. (Inspo photo is not realistic in one visit based of the current condition of the hair, it’s going to take multiple appointments to get her there safely) Bcuz don’t I know that her “old stylist could always make her platinum in one sitting” -insulting me before I’ve even touched her hair. 😅 I know most people are also shocked at how many hours it actually takes. Hair takes a longggg time.
So yes that’s how I did it at first, But not every stylist does it the way I did it. Not everyone wants to waste time making minimum wage without tips while they assist for 6 months to a year once they’re out of school. . Some are bolder or maybe a little cocky even… and go right ahead and just start doing hair. Learn by trial and error. Eventually the stylist will find their niche, what they’re best at. And get really good at whatever that is, and specialize in it. No stylist can be great at everything. So for instance, just bcuz someone is really good with color, doesn’t mean they’re also a master at cutting. They could do mediocre cuts but really bomb highlights. It really just depends on the stylist. I always suggest checking out their work if possible on social media beforehand! 😊
I have so much respect for the stylists that are really good and really successful… that did it all on their own. The reason I did it the way I did is bcuz I have to tell you… when I started with my journey in hair 15 years ago… I never expected it was going to be as hard to learn as it is. Even now I still have things that go wrong sometimes. (luckily nothing big and I’m usually able to predict it beforehand and avoid disaster) but having the realization this job is so much more than just cutting hair. We have to be chemists. Artists. Service providers. Trusted Friend and confident, run our own business, do all our own marketing and social media… manage our time, be speedy, be thorough…. Have good customer service skills… forget that customers expect us to know how to do (and be amazing at) every single haircut that exists. Majority of time not having a single clue how hair actually works or how much time and money it’s really going to take to get them to their dream hair goal. A lot of people have totally unrealistic expectations on what can safely be achieved in one appointment. oh and everyone’s hair is different. So while one thing may have turned out beautifully on one person… doesn’t mean the same thing will work on the next client. I also want to add that although it doesn’t seem like it would be… an angled Bob (especially stacked in the back) is technically one of the hardest haircuts there is to learn. 😬 It makes sense to me now why literally everyone has a hair horror story. Hair is a lot broader and a lot harder to learn than it seems like it would be. Not to mention physically and mentally exhausting being on our feet all day. I think what it comes down to is the consult. A very thorough and detailed consultation to make sure we are both on the same page and feeling comfortable, saves a lot of miscommunication! It’s hard when a client is new too, (which as a new stylist every client is going to be new to them even if they’re not new to the salon) a new client is always a little stressful bcuz we’ve never done their hair before. Sometimes it takes a few visits to really get to know their hair, vibe w/ them & be able to really knock it out of the park for them. That’s always the goal! I tell my clients all the time I don’t mind taking extra time and care bcuz ultimately I want them to a happy with it. It’s their hair after all. I can completely understand why some are so fussy. Hair is a defining feature. It’s one of our best accessories as women. It’s important!!!
Sorry this was so long just wanted to share my thoughts and experiences. Thank you again for being such an awesome human in the way you handled it. I’m sure she was kicking herself and probably felt really bad. Betcha she was panicking internally as well. I would have been 😅 maybe she’s continued her education since and maybe for all we know… now she does amazing bobs! 🤞🏻

But hay ho it’ll soon grow and many people are going through far worse than a short hair cut. Doesn’t help I know but watch a few vids on here to get this in perspective. Also use straighteners and pul the hair down, it’ll give you more length and take the bowl look away.
