    A shop is an essential part of a man's life. I have started 6 different shops in my lifetime and have never finished any of them. Always moved on chasing a better life. One of the places I lived and worked on getting a nice shop is still not finished.. I lived there 3 different times and still didn't get it totally finished. I still own the property after 50 years and doubt if it will ever get finished. I even built a crane that went from one end to the other and from one side to the other. Was nice but never got the siding fully finished on it before I left the last time. Keep saying someday and I keep hoping that day will come before I get to old to enjoy it.....

    Stuart, so very happy for you. I definitely empathize with you on the space constraint. Congrats on the new place. Look forward to seeing how that progresses and ultimately hearing if all the extra space really is as liberating as it would seem for all of us working in cramped quarters. Cheers

    Congratulations on the new shop! That's super exciting. I know it's tempting to start laying it out, but I have to tell you, taking the time to build a simple DIY bridge crane, mine is round bar with an I-beam riding on the skates. Yeah it's a hassle and it's pricey up front, but doing so, I can almost promise that just the act of moving your tools in, and your ease in positioning and repositioning them, you will feel it paid for itself. And I don't mean to lecture, but I'm a little older than you and a 60 lb rotary table starts looking pretty daunting around age 50. Having a hoist that can access every tiny corner of your shop, you won't regret the price or the effort. But once you move all your tools in, it's it's a job triple the size. Just my two cents

    • @StuartdeHaro
      @StuartdeHaro  Рік тому +1

    Ahhh , 'nothing like MORE horizontal space ! ;p Your shop makes mine look like a real DUMP - ! 26 x 40' basement . . . 2 car garage are stacked & packed tightly with tools & materials . . . ZERO 'spare' horizontal space ;p Between metalworking , woodworking , fly tying ;gem faceting. . . & plant growing . . . there is hardly room for FURNITURE ! 'Been a bachelor for a good number of years , * which makes a collecting obsession , (or several) a rewarding way of life ! . . . 'would be nice to have a house mouse or two . . . to clean up behind me ! ! ! The joy of not having 'honey do's' is PRICELESS !
    'Been rooting TREES from cuttings - & have a small forest of dwarf Alberta Spruce . . .
    . . . I SLEEP with one of my guitars - 'been playing close to 50 years now . . . 'can't sleep without jamming for an hour or two , or more . . . hahaha ! LIFE IS TOO GOOD !
    Ten lifetimes wouldn't be enough to do all of what I'd like to do . . . LEARNING NEVER ENDS ! ! !
    CONGRATULATIONS on the UPGRADE ! ENJOY . . . ( when all the labor leads to what you WANT to do MOST ! "V"

    I wonder if you could discuss “order of operations” . I am a basic rookie and find it difficult to plan what to do, when to do it, and why. Really can get confusing and too easy to get lost in the process. I bet this is an area you focus on in your teaching. Thanks

    • @StuartdeHaro
      @StuartdeHaro  Рік тому +1

      Hi Robin. That's one I've been meaning to tackle for a while. I have to think about how to put it into words without it getting overwhelming. There are a lot of things to consider so I want to make sure I do it right. Basically though, I always approach it first from a, "How am I going to hold this?" perspective. A lot of times, the work holding methods I have available make my choice for me. I also pay attention to the critical dimensions and if they relate to some other feature. Those are the big ones. I'll flesh it out more and come up with some examples. Thanks for watching!

    • @StuartdeHaro
      @StuartdeHaro  Рік тому +3

      Fun fact: I have a degree in music focused on the French Horn. I got into machining because of it because I wanted to make them. I've actually made nine of them.

    • @jimurrata6785
      @jimurrata6785 Рік тому +2

      @@StuartdeHaro That's quite an accomplishment!
      I'd think brass instruments are more like panel beating and hammer forming than machining, but I can see how you'd need a lot of machining for valves and mouthpiece.
      Anyway, I didn't expect a reply but I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for the content here on your channel.
      You really explain things well and make it fun.

    • @StuartdeHaro
      @StuartdeHaro  Рік тому +2

      @@jimurrata6785 There are a lot of special tools and forming mandrels that need to be made, plus a ton of small pieces like braces, connecting ferrules, and slide tubes. It's a nice mix of machining, sheet metal work, blacksmithing, and jewelry making techniques.
