Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
2. What are you studying? I'm a recent grad of Yokohama National University's "Masters of Business Administration" Program

Looking up every single word that I don't understand is exactly how I learned English. I switched everything to English (movies, books, wikipedia articles) and just kept at it. It took 3 years, but after that I could speak English fluently!

Satori reader has been a life-saver. I especially love their explanations within the context of the item that you're reading. And smaller things like being able to hear ふ (a sound I struggle with) or how ん changes with vowels vs. consonants. It makes my learning more intentional and people here notice a difference with my spoken Japanese 💜🎶

It's so true "This word must be very rare, I've never heard it!" *2 hours later it's everywhere* I'll make sure to check the Satori Reader, sounds like something I actually need.
I feel very desmotivated with Japanese learning, but here you are, giving us a lot of good resources.

Me too! I took the N4 when I was 15 and literally never went back due to well a kinda unrealistic goal of skipping to N2 but now about 4 years later I finally feel good enough to do it

I’ve started to use an index card as a bookmark, and write down the readings for names on it. It’s definitely made reading novels in Japanese more enjoyable.

Didn’t know about satori reader! Cool to know! I’ve been only using Japanese news articles (nhk) and the genki 1& 2 stories. Still a beginner even after studying abroad and graduating college with a minor 🤪. Really don’t want to give up my past efforts so I’m self studying. I was also smart to copy all my university course paperwork, so I have “homework & quizzes” every day.
I can verify Brian is doing a great job answering questions in Satori Reader in a timely and thoroughly helpful manner.
I passed the JLPT N1 first try two years ago after a year of on-off study and 6 months of intensive focus. Satori Reader was awesome for helping me keep motivated by mixing up the media I was using to get exposure to Japanese. Mostly, I used that series you're both holding - Shin Kanzen Master - and they are brilliant. I made a time line between the day I got the books and two weeks before the exam, and literally made a schedule for the six months, one row for each book; all the lessons in each book spread evenly over the time I had. Some books had 90 lessons and some only 25 or something so I knew it would be really easy to get ahead in the areas I was comfortable with and behind in others. Having a time line gave me a huge sense of accomplishment, I could see where I was leaning too hard on the sections that I enjoyed and falling behind in others.

I was originally waiting for a sale but I couldn't really hold off and just went for a 1 year subscription. I think its worth it, it makes learning a lot easier and I love the notes that you can check out for some of the more difficult parts. I also like that I can import the kanji I learned from Wanikani. So far I finished 2 articles and currently on my 3rd one.

awesome interview, that proverb is my new mantra, so good! love this guy, been using Human Japanese and the HJ intermediate apps since like 2012/2013 and was so stoked to see advance turn into satori reader and how amazing of an app it is as well, if you haven't tried Human Japanese yet, its amazing and its what really kicked off my learning easy to understand, good for quick snippets of learning, and is cheap with a free version to dip your toes in first.
Omg the dev of Human Japanese! That's the app that got me really hooked on Japanese like 10 years ago when I was in middle school. Very cool to see he's still active in helping people learn :)

Human Japanese is one of the best reading apps I have seen. The text ia well written and fun, the design really agreeable and the language instruction top notch. And you can carry it everywhere you go ! ビデオはありがとうございます
Kindle helped me a lot, there are many books which have furigana for most words - and for those where its missing all it takes is 1 second marking that word and the reading along with translation will appear.

This is so helpful! I am about six weeks into a beginner class in Kyoto, and while I am doing well with all the individual pieces, it's proving hard to see it all come together.

I’m the reader that would read the full sentence or page in kids books & then take every word I don’t know & find the meaning. Then reread it again & figure out what it says in English.
Definitely nice addition with the flash cards that Satori has I’m enjoying Mona’s Big Adventure it is challenging as a beginner & the short series of Restaurants, Hotels etc. is nifty as well. Like that the voices in the story don’t sound robotic but actual people speaking!
Don't look up every word you don't know, it will just take all the fun out of reading and you won't remember them all anyway. Focus on frequent words, or words that somehow stand out to you.
It will never be your last chance to learn a specific word. And if it really truly is your last time seeing that word, well then you probably don't even need to know that word.
I'm actually curious to know how many of you are "look up as you go" types and how many are "underline, skip and come back" types?

I'm Japanese who learn English. I'd read English sentences with Japanese translation for 1year. And now I look up all of words I don't know.
@@kemushichan You know, Loretta, thinking about it more, I don't think your technique and mine are that different. What the process actually looks like for me is, I will often finish the sentence or paragraph before looking up the word(s), and then go back and read it again. So it's kind of a mental underline, a little mental tag on that word. I've just discovered that it's better for me not to get too far ahead before I stop and check, because knowing the meaning of that word will often greatly illuminate what follows. But at the end of the day, I think we're basically doing the same thing. It's just a question of now or later, and I think that just comes down to style and preferences.
zehaha, I totally get how it can feel overwhelming to be looking up too many words. But it's also frustrating when you find yourself at a really important part of the story and you realize you're not exactly sure what's going on. For me, I find reading to be the most satisfying when I'm staying with the author every step of the way, even if it means my progress is a little slower than I might like. This part didn't make it into the video, but I've found that as I've gotten older, my hesitation to look things up has decreased. I no longer feel it to be an impediment to my enjoyment; rather, it's the sunshine that illuminates the rest of the story. Of course, everyone is different and your mileage may vary. Those are just my two cents.
@@kemushichan i am a look up as I go type. Especially when reading manga. I'm currently reading Junji Ito's Uzumaki and the storyline is rlly interesting. So 98% of the time, I'm looking up what I don't know to get extra details. Sometimes if it's too much back to back in one bubble that idk I skip around in the text and try to use context clues.

Hi, Isaac! Variety can be really helpful to combat burnout. If you just can't do another flashcard, for example, try switching to something totally different, like going back to a chapter from a story or dialogue you read before, just to review it. The change of pace is refreshing sometimes, and you almost always discover things you didn't notice the first time too. Also, when I was really studying like crazy, I experienced these waves where sometimes I felt like I could learn anything and other times I felt like nothing would enter my brain. I learned not to try to learn new things during those periods but just to use them as opportunities to review. The important thing is to find a way to work with your brain, and before you know it, you'll be past the plateau and making progress again. 頑張ってください！

May I ask what level you'd say you're on in japanese? I thought abt getting the first one but i know there's gonna be a lotta words idk lol especially magical themed vocab
@@Ahn-mu3db Hmm my reading skills are probably pretty close to JLPT N1 (speaking is a different story, lol). Like Loretta, I tried reading it when I was at a lower level and it was too difficult. The magical terminology is not as bad as you would think simply because the wizarding world is new to Harry, so a lot of the things are explained to him in simpler terms. I think the hardest part is simply following the story.
And yes, diligent read aloud use of satori reader will push your Japanese level through the roof. Thanks to all its creators.

Satori Reader looks really great. I also check (nearly) every word that I don't know hehe. However sometimes I don't check at all. The reason why I check every unknown word is to get familiar with the author's voice, as most authors repeat a lot of vocab and grammar.. Took me 6 years I am finally reading Date A Live in Japanese!

Signed up yesterday, was checking things out, and I wanted to check out that Nutshell Grammar course. Couldn't remember what it was called, just remembered the description. So I re-listened to end of this episode, and that's when I realized that it's not coming out until January. Le Sigh. I guess it can wait. I'm still working on my Genki 1 textbook, and I'm going through the Human Japanese course, so maybe I'm not ready for the new course anyway. But I'm looking forward to it!
Learned about Satori Reader in this awesome video and oh boy... My "not reading Japanese because I can't find the right material" was so much solved.

I know that if I was back in my earlier days of studying I would have loved this so much! Where was all this cool stuff when I first started...
Also I am a huge subscriber of the highlight as I read method (maybe I should switch to a pencil) - I tend to highlight one novel up a LOT, and then while I'm slowly going through that converting them into flashcards, I'll go read books without highlighting. It hurts a bit to leave a word on a page I don't know, but in the spirit of 多読 I just keep reading. But, you have to be reading something interesting to keep your attention :) Any word I skipped over, I definitely will see again and again and I will learn it later is how I think of it :)
(also for character names, I write the name in a tiny memo I carry with me everywhere, so I just reference that as I read if I don't remember how to pronounce a character's name...)

I haven't used satori reader for a while now (I gotta get back to it!) bc of money reasons, but I am very confident when I say that my progress with Japanese was at its best when I was using satori reader. I have been so demotivated with my Japanese learning journey. I bought grammar books and have been learning kanji every now and then but I'm just too overwhelmed with everything.

Very interesting contract to Tadoku, which famously stated the absolute opposite: just keep on reading, skip what you don't know, capture the overall plot and topic - then return again later. Having tried it, I'm still not quite convinced: my choices seem to be to stay with whatever level of Tadoku I'm at, which gets boring. Alternately, I proceed through the levels - and then go back to some lower level to verify I now know those previously unknown words. Which becomes ridiculous, like verifying your understanding of Shakespeare by going back to See Spot Run. Maybe if there were hundreds of Tadoku stories at every level, but there aren't.
I think I'm just going to go for the JLPT5 and then take the plunge into Satori, death before glory! That all said, the more I read about JLPT, including articles and even all the way down to reddits, the less the higher JLPT levels look attractive. If I read one more story about "I passed JLPT1 but I can't understand or speak native Japanese", I'm going to write it all off as a pure money-making venture.
I'm totally with you guys about mixing it up - even when it's beyond my current level: Anki cards, then read a book *about* Japanese, then listen to a Japanese audiobook, then watch anime with (Japanese) sub-titles. Doesn't matter what I don't understand: the brilliant thing is the sheer endorphine jolt when you re-watch some anime or listen to an audiobook chapter and suddenly you understand something you didn't before!

I cant believe I hadn't had any recommendation from your channel in years YT has changed so much if the bell is off it doesn't seem to matter that I've been subbed to you for years . Anyways I have been extremely lazy with my Japanese so its barely progressed over the years but its actually worse now that I listen to so much Korean music and watch Korean videos I honestly have no idea what to do at this point I always wanted to learn Japanese first than Korean much later but now I'm pretty unsure what to do as my brain is full of three language I'm sure trilingual people have it more together then me who just picks up on Korean as I'm trying to study Japanese for years. I guess I'll make a new goal to take more steps to study I never plan on giving up on learning Japanese so thanks so much for this video.

Regarding burnout, check out my reply to Isaac V Cornejo earlier in this thread. The key really is variety, and recognizing the different modes your brain can get into as you are learning. We're working hard to smooth out the ramp for people coming from Human Japanese backgrounds on Satori Reader. Please do check us out and keep an eye out for that Nutshell Grammar series this January!

l think i was overdoing the flash cards and SRS (which seems like a common cause of burnout) so have mixed things up and already feel so much better 🥳

I love languages so much, but Im usually so tired when i get back from work that i am usually able to dedicate around 40 minutes midweek after work for languages. I sometimes fantasize about winning the lottery so i can have 2 to 3 years to just learn Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French and Arabic.
Last year I wrote my Chinese HSK1, German Goethe C1 and Dutch B2.
