I love this guy - he's hilarious! And when he sits there playing the occasional random, throwaway riff, he sounds amazing. She Sells Sanctuary = one of the best songs ever.
Love removal machine by The Cult is among THE best rock n' roll songs of all time, and Billy Duffy has come up with some of the most unique sounds of any guitarist. Thanks for the upload.
The Cult was my first rock concert. I saw them in Lubbock, TX back in 1987. Dangerous Toys and Bohnam were the opening bands. Wow! I can still see the concert in my head like a movie when I hear those songs. Over 20 years after that concert, my band opened up for Broken Teeth (Jason McMaster of Dangerous Toys) at The Deadhorse in San Angelo, TX, and I told Jason the story of how he was the first rock band I had ever seen live when he opened up for The Cult and Bohnam. It was a pretty cool moment in my personal rock history books. Now, 35 years later, I just bought a Gretsch G7593T Billy Duffy Falcon, and came across this video to keep me entertained while I wait on my guitar. Liked and subscribed!
“You have to command the instrument, you can’t have fear” This. This is so important you guys. Take this from this comment section. Strap on your guitar. Go.
Billy I'm 49 now and it seems like yesterday that I discovered You and Ian . ( THE CULT) It ceases to amaze me how Ya'll keep coming up with really really good songs. A lot of bands would be tickled to have 4_ 5 songs on there albums. A bunch of bands don't have 4 or 5 good songs during their whole career.
Looks like pple have forgotten how popular Gretsch was in the 80,s a few new wave bands played Gretsch like Altered images, haircut 100.... Bow wow wow an important part of Gretsch history .
Briefly met Billy and Ian before at the bar the first ever gig as 'The Cult' - I'd missed Death Cult.......brings back some great memories....super nice then, super nice now.
Love this...the big white Falcon, a jewel😍the album L❤VE(my favorite)is a real MASTERPIECE... Billy,a very talented guitarist, yet so down to earth...thanks for this interesting video!😍🎵🎶🎸🎸🎸
Just discovering this guitarist after reading his name a billion times in all sorts of guitar media. He’s an amazing artist. Like a mix between Johnny Marr, Slash, Johnny Ramone and Keef Richards. And the kicker is that what I’ve seen him with is white falcons and les Paul’s. They’re completely different animals! I wonder what the relation must be in his mind. I have a les Paul...
The measure of greatness...SSS is one of the most distinct and identifiable songs in music history and you KNOW it within the first few notes. Enough said.
I haven't laughed so hard for a long time. Billy's dead-pan, self effacing nature, so beautifully expressed, is so heartwarming. Thanks to him I own a WF.
as a younger man I did some work as a roadie. I did Death Cult on one night and coveted Billy's Gretsch. The following night King Kurt were playing. Sitting backstage with them and having a chat with them they got a Gretsch white falcon out of a case. I told them that Bill had been at the venue the night before and he had the same guitar. They said ' oh but mine's better and has gold trim etc and other bits' A bit later they we're on stage...using the guitar as a tennis racket to bat away eggs that were thrown by another band member. Billy would have cried
Billy is a genius. A great guy - and definitely the reason that I now own 5 Gretches including a White Falcon. What confuses me here though is Billy saying that he had to sell his "Theatre of Hate" double cutaway WF to buy the single cutaway - as there are a number of photos of early Death Cult gigs where both guitars are visible on stage. Playing the single cut with the double cut perched on a stand at the side of the stage. One day I'll ask him in person! 😅
Brilliant, nearly dropped the sauce pan when you said" if you have all your limbs your in". Wish the job centre adopted that rule. Do you remember the Berlin , Manchester. Regards, Mike.
Just bought my first (rancher) Gretsch, after over twenty years of lusting after them. Biggest regret was Norm, of Norm's Rare Guitars, offered me a '57 Chet Atkins 6120 with a matching steer horn amp, for something like $2,400. By the time I made up my mind a short time later, they were already around 8k and climbing..
Billy's work on The Cult's early stuff was amazing. That mix of country twang, alt-punk and rock. Some of my favourite ever playing. That said, he's an utterly average rock guitarist which is why The Cult tailed off so hard when they went down that route.
Did Billy just play the riff from the U2 song I Will Follow off their Boy album? ;-) I'm a U2 fan too (early stuff mainly), so I detect a very strong "peer" influence of (U2's guitarist) The Edge in Billy Duffy's playing style. However, Billy Duffy is the perfect combination of The Edge & (AC DC's) Angus Young/Malcolm Young. Not to mention, I'm a die-hard fan of The Cult. ROCK ON! \m/
Yep. My strat would be the first non-living thing I'd go for in a house fire. Doesn't sound odd at all. Those things have personalities as much as my cats. All my guitars have names and respond to me like girlfriends. The only Falcon I ever played was better than sex. If I'd had the 3 grand for it, I'd have totally walked out with it.
Never heard this guy talk before. He is so down to earth!
Billy s guitar, Jamie s killer bass lines and Ian unique voice make one of most particular sound in rock history
I love this guy - he's hilarious! And when he sits there playing the occasional random, throwaway riff, he sounds amazing.
She Sells Sanctuary = one of the best songs ever.
Agree, I love that tune
I'd definitely drink a beer with Billy even if he wasn't in one of my favorite bands. Very cool dude.

These guys won my Soul back in the 80's

What a humble guy, and a great guitarist. You don't get to be that good, unless you really are 'That Good'.
Billy Duffy - underrated Riff Master.
I agree 1000%
Riff GOD!
What a lovely bloke. Down-to-earth, honest and a genuine warmth. And one heck of a guitarist!
Thought id look mr duffy up as we live in the house where he grew up.....wow ace!!!
“You have to command the instrument, you can’t have fear”
This. This is so important you guys. Take this from this comment section. Strap on your guitar. Go.
Really love how down to earth he is. Really seems like a genuine, good guy. Oh, and I love his playing and the guitar, too.
Bugger. I just made an almost identical post! We must be right :)

I am on the same page as Duffy about the guitar.
There is a lot more to it than a piece of wood, some guitars are magic, Mojo!
super nice guy, really enjoy him interviews - and a real rocker

Saw Billy Duffy in my first ever rock concert! Sanctuary is still in my top 100 of all time!!!! 79 to be exact. :)
1:54 ... I remember that guitar, too. Always remembered the video mainly because of the big white Gretsch.
Now that's what sacrificing everything in the name of music is all about.
I finally got to see the cult in Bristol this week. Billy Duffy was awesome!! There’s no other word!!
his guitar is probably one of the coolest looking ones ever
nice interview. One of the reasons I wanted to get a Gretsch his tones are great and good riffs. Wild Hearted Son and Sun King and so many more.
Saw Billy play last week - couldn’t take my eyes off of the guitar the whole time. Just looked a million dollars.
Gotta get a White Falcon ✌️✨
Love this...the big white Falcon, a jewel😍the album L❤VE(my favorite)is a real MASTERPIECE... Billy,a very talented guitarist, yet so down to earth...thanks for this interesting video!😍🎵🎶🎸🎸🎸
Never seen him as animated as he is here. Must be the guitars.
Thank you for loving your Gretsch the way you do....amazing sound!
LOVE the sound of that thing. It's its own being.
a real legend. Such classic songs and riffs
Very down to earth bloke.

Far better guitarist than he says he is, man. Also glad he comes across as a top bloke.
So very true. That gretch guitar sound is the signature sound of The Cult
The measure of greatness...SSS is one of the most distinct and identifiable songs in music history and you KNOW it within the first few notes. Enough said.
The first album "dreamtime" was absolutely brilliant.
The cult were like demigods to me and my mates back then.
Sanctuary is my favorite Cult song, I just love it!
Billys a legend keep up the good work choice of weapon is never off in our house.
Great interview
Kickass Guitarist, Sexiest Guitar on the planet & greatest album of all time imho - LOVE
Great interview. Billy is a cool and down to earth man.
I haven't laughed so hard for a long time. Billy's dead-pan, self effacing nature, so beautifully expressed, is so heartwarming. Thanks to him I own a WF.
What a great band the Cult were, luckily we still have the great music they left behind ❤.
Such a cool guy!

The sound so deep in my core
Beautiful guitar played by a Rock N Roll Master so eloquently~!
Passion. Such a valuable quality 🙂
Keep putting out the great music Billy.
One of the greatest!
Always had a great guitar sound. He cared alot
What a lovely guy
A likeable person without a massive showbiz ego.

What a cool dude🤘
I was completely struck by these guys...i learned the entire first album as a teenager
Brilliant, nearly dropped the sauce pan when you said" if you have all your limbs your in". Wish the job centre adopted that rule. Do you remember the Berlin , Manchester.
Regards, Mike.
What a kick ass road dog musician & a really cool cat!
THANKS FOR THE INSIGHT ....-----
Me fez querer e aprender a tocar guitarra ! Obrigado sempre Billy
This guy can go !
I want one of his new Gretsch guitars.
He plays his talent down a lot which I love. Definetely underrated in the world of Bristish guitarists but being annonomous maight be his thing?

/m\ate cheers & ROCK ON! ;-) \m/
nice one, Billy. top man.
Great stuff .
Love this vid. Rock on morrissey!
Nice interview 👌🏻
THE BEST BILLY DUFFY THE CULT
Geordie from Killing Joke plays a Gretsch and he has that huge sound too. I love the sound of Gretsch guitars.
Scott M , Geordies plays a Gibson E-S 295 and has done for many years but he has also played other Gibson's ; mainly Les Paul.
Such an awesome well spoken zero asshole tremendously underrated rock star!!!!
My next guitar....! 🎸
great stories

My heroguitar
☄️ The Cult ☄️
@7:19 "In a house fire it'd be the first...."
Wife off camera gives a glare...
... "well, it'd certainly be the first non-living thing..."
LOL
Punk was maybe over when The Clash, Split... after Combat Rock! 82-83.
Billy's work on The Cult's early stuff was amazing. That mix of country twang, alt-punk and rock. Some of my favourite ever playing. That said, he's an utterly average rock guitarist which is why The Cult tailed off so hard when they went down that route.
"....the first non-living thing, put it that way." Well put.
Is it me or does Billy look more like Gordon Ramsay the older he gets?
I can't help but think that Billy regrets not using the Gretsch for Sonic Temple.
whats the begginging song?
Did Billy just play the riff from the U2 song I Will Follow off their Boy album? ;-) I'm a U2 fan too (early stuff mainly), so I detect a very strong "peer" influence of (U2's guitarist) The Edge in Billy Duffy's playing style. Niroshan Fernando There are definitely songs from their early repertoire like Gods Zoo, Sanctuary, and Nirvana which are reminiscent of early U2.
Nominay Btw, I LOVE that song God's Zoo & Moya too! SDC songs that they kept as encores for diehard fans.
Yeah that was I will Follow intro
@@GLYDR Yes, it sounds more like the intro of the live version on the b side of Gloria,
His football intermezzo was great, too. I wonder if he did that to have more time to write songs for his wife Victoria and the other Spice Girls.
:-)
Get them girls on the sly :)
I thought it was interesting that he didn't mention working with Rick Rubin on the "Electric" album or the photo on the cover of "Sonic Temple."
Billy and Malcolm Young made the White Falcon desirable imho
Fu**ing cool
A MINHA BANDA PREFERIDA ATÉ HOJE !!!!!!!!!
Single coil? I see two !! Billy...

So this is where Vanilla Ice got to
When Englishmen want to live in California but still hail England... I never got it.
i just dont get were you lot get off sayin this is a nice guy he was in 1983 when he needed fans to help them thro there first tour now ha ha
The Cult : forgetaboutit
surprised he wasn't copying geordie from killing joke ...
I absolutely adore Billy Duffy but the intro from I will follow at the very beginning is way
inferior to The Edge's,IMHO.
