    My 10 year old is a history buff and he can recite the preamble to the constitution of the United States from memory. I asked him what the 2nd amendment means to him and in his own words "it protects all other rights and it ensures things like what happened in Germany in the early 20th century doesn't happen in America." This kid makes me one proud dad.

    My deep conviction in that matter and Mr. Heston were instrumental in me, a foreigner, signing up for a Life Membership with the NRA. It was among the best decision in my life. I would love to see many, many more American citizens doing the same thing. Remember: It's not about guns, it's about freedom. He once said: We are right and we'be been right all along! Rest in peace, Mr. Heston. I miss you. We urgently need a kind gentleman with the same charisma to uphold the flame as Mr. Heston did.

    Couldn't have said any of that better myself. I don't think we'll ever have a man like Mr. Heston ever again, at least not anytime soon. I agree with what he said, we have the right to own firearms and firearm ownership is a key characteristic of free citizens. No man can (or should be able to) infringe or take away rights that no man can grant.

    @TheMossberglover It would be nice to show this in school, unfortunately the liberal gun haters, along side the gun hating "soccer moms", would rise up and unleash hell that freedom is being taught in schools. The best way to inform is through the colleges, from Harvard to the local community college. Inform, educate, and keep vigilant against those who would destroy the rights that our forefathers fought, bled, and died for. May Charleton heston rest in peace and may God always watch over him.

    The purpose of the right to bear arms it to protect all the other rights. I am a firm believer that the main enemy of an oppressive and totalitarian government in an armed citizenry. There are only 2 ways to get a person to do what you want, persuasion and force. An armed population removes the government's option of force. Firearms help keep society in balance.

    the 2nd amendment doesn't mean you HAVE to own a gun, it protects your right to CHOOSE to own one, not owning one does not make you unpatriotic, simply using your right to choose not to.

    The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard. 10 USC § 311 You can argue with quotes, but you can't argue with US Code.

    Hiding behind a gun does not make you equal? It traps you in fear. In Canada we have the right to meet equal force with equal force. My son got his first deer when he was 13, my children understand and respect guns. If you really want to go back to 1776 or in common wealth law (that's us) look at the bill of rights of 1689, that's Canada's 2nd amendment, however just like letting women vote and abolishing slavery the law has been updated.

    2th amendment:
