i was born in Michigan but some of my Dads family came from Canada..My great Grandmother was half Canadian Indian..My dad loved Canadian Fiddlers and I remember him listening to Don Messer on the Radio.
Listening to Don and his islanders every week was a ritual at my grandparents. The one room schoolhouse I attended was also where many square dances were held - my grandfather was one of the fiddlers and there were always Messers songs played. Thank you.
Thankfully the CBC could only delete Don from their TV system. Don's music will outlast CBC which betrayed all those in Canada who loved the Don Messer program.
I was born in Detroit. But my parents came over from Canada. We listened to Don Messer's Jubilee every week. We were able to because we lived so close to Windsor.
James Genge Yes, he was wonderful, a real legend. Do you remember the outcry when his show was cancelled by CBC? I can still hear my father and grandparents, being so upset that the CBC would dare to do that.
Grew up on the Canadian Prairies. Country schools were the entertinmnt centres. From the time I was 12 or so, I remember the dances at the school. Us kids could stay up as long as the parents were having fun. I danced to this tune many times!!
@Sashine: Yes, I do recall when his show was cancelled. by CBC. This was the greatest show on TV at the time and like my father, we'd listen with a keen ear to his fiddle music. His music will live on as one of the greatest fiddle players ever known yesterday and even today.
true very true. We watched it at home too. I used to sit in my little green rocking chair as a child and watch him and his Islanders, the stepdancers, Marg Osbourne and the others. Timeless old time music so enjoyable - sad not to get this on tv anymore.
Use to watch as a kid cuz we only had 1 tv channel. I didn't like it when the drummer played the block. Now after all these decades, turns out I still don't!

There is no mistaken the master's violin. The New Brunswick Lumberjack, Don Messer. Beautiful and well coordinated.
