    I'm really fascinated by how the whole orchestra can make such a pleasant dynamic when the conductor is constantly dangle her wand from the ground to the roof without any changes...

    Great performance! And, the organ added SO much power and depth to the finale!

    I've watched almost every UA-cam of the 1812 and invariably somebody will comment that the cannon are out of time. They seem to think that all of the shots are to be on the downbeat.

    Given my almost obsessive love of the 1812, I'm surprised I've never heard it with organ before. Such a MAGNIFICENT instrument! An exciting addition! Bravo to the organist!
    Ms. Bish's outfit is almost letter perfect for 1882, the year the piece was written. The bustle would have been bigger for a formal occasion. I also love the giant bow disgusting her platform, and how she swung around to conduct the cannons!
    Since there was a choir on stage, I found myself wondering what other works were on the program that evening.
    Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance with us.

    Damn, that tuba player was going ham towards the end. Too bad the organ and out-of-time cannon covered him up so much. It's not common hearing a tubist covering up the entire brass section as he did. Kudos to that man.

      Interesting observation . Thanks for sharing. In most live performances, the bells and the cannons are always out of synch. It comes with the territory. Diana B. is first and foremost an organist, and a great one. But she's not a great "conductor", yet. She's learning and she'd be the first one to admit it. Thanks for sharing your insights. CVD

    I remember playing this...many times. What they USED to do in orchestras (don't know if they still do) is shoot a rifle into an empty oil barrel to replicate the cannons. The viola section was usually situated such that we were right next to the oil barrels, and this helped to damage my hearing. That and Led Zeppelin.... :)

    First time i heard this piece i was about 11 at Watergate Barge on the Potomac. They actually shot canons from i think Arlington Cemetery and various bridges. Gold standard. Rattled the bones and told the story of our city being pillaged and burned. Loved the addition of the organ on this one.

    Tchaikovsky had quite a few competent contemporaries, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Glazunov, and Tchaikovsky’s favorite, Rimsky-Korsakov. I prefer to think that there was a friendly rivalry going on where they were inspiring each other.

      It’s a Russian Orthodox thing. The Russian Church Hymn “Spassi Gospodi” was chosen for a reason. It is both a Hymn of abject penitence as well as of ultimate deliverance. Those 13 notes are an essential part of this Hymn as well as its rhythm, which I feel Bish falters upon.

    This was an awesome performance. The only one that comes close is the one in Boston on the Esplinade on July 4th performed by the Boston Pops where the cannon fire is real.

    I think maybe the visual and audio were not quite synchronized, so the conductor looks bad. If you close your eyes and listen, everybody is together-this is a better indicator of how well it's conducted.

    This performance of "The Year 1812," TH. 49, gives me an impression of the failed French invasion of Russia as it might appear on film, with the steamrolling of Napoleon's reduced force by the Tsarist defences west of Moskva for the climax.

  • @TheUnbound123
    @TheUnbound123 7 років тому +3

    The audio and visuals seem synced up to me. What people are saying by the conductor being off is the fact that the conductor is usually meant to be in front of the orchestra in terms of timing so the orchestra can see ahead of time how the conductor wants the piece played. That's kind of the point of a conductor otherwise the orchestra would play without them because they all have the music in front of them. Those conductors who conduct with the music in time with the players are usually those who have practiced with the orchestra several times beforehand so they become more of a show piece than a conductor.

    • @oramos1967
      @oramos1967 6 років тому

      Imágen y sonido están sincronizados. La sensación de retardo quizá viene del hecho de que Diane Bish es organista y no ha hecho carrera como directora y sus movimientos son toscos. Por lo demás, coincido con Ud.

    The funny thing is that Tchaikovsky hated the 1812. He considered it a piece having little skill in it, seeing he basically just hammered it out in six weeks without much real effort. The fact that it almost instantly become extremely popular really irritated him.

    • @WillCMay
      @WillCMay 5 років тому +1

      klscomus It's not written for a chorus to be used. I've seen videos where they add it in, and it can work. I'm just saying it wasn't originally written that way. To anyone who says it takes away the soul of the piece to not have a chorus doesn't know how it was originally written.

    • @irajayrosen4792
      @irajayrosen4792 5 років тому +1

      @@WillCMay the chorus is a recent addition. I enjoy some performances with it, but it ruins the mental movie in my head that I've had for over 60 years!
      Which is what Romantic music is supposed to create in your head.

    Odd choice of dress, some oddly weird moments with the orchestra holding together, but overall a fascinatingly individual, in the best possible way, of a much overplayed (and worse by so many big names). Thoroughly enjoyed, and who is that nice lady flautist doing the solo?
