  • I was dying watching Linus and Jake try to rack out his new house and just had to upload a simple how-to.

I fully agree with your install/removal method, however there is one issue. Not all cage nuts are the same! Most have the metal cage as a thin piece of flexible metal that are easily flexed by pinching it and are a breeze to install. However, there are some out there that are really stiff and don't easily flex. I think the problem with cage nuts is that people get ahold of these inflexible ones and have huge problems with getting them installed. I have a few in my rack and I've been slowly replacing them with more flexible cagenuts simply because removal and installation is that much easier.

Thank you. I just got my rack yesterday and was trying to mount a power strip today, totally baffled how to do it, but you made it a piece of cake for me. Thanks! 😃

I wanted to learn how to install cage nuts because I have been wanting my own little rack for a while.
Welp, guess I did. xD To the point, precise, exact. Thanks, exactly what I needed.

I love your videos, I'm doing some similar home lab stuff I have some Nexus 3048s coming for a pair in my home lab and your video on yours is literally the only good relative content out there all I get to watch while I wait for mail

First video among 1000's I can actually see how the units is set on the rack.

You are using soft cage nuts. Eventually you will find super stiff ones this is not possible.
You will need a cagenut tool or a screw driver.

Hahaha... I was definitely thinking this (and also how sick that hot pink color is) while watching. I don't remember having ANY trouble installing/removing nuts in my rack, and I'd never done it before then. I do it the same way you do - it just came naturally to me, lol.

I use the screwdriver handle tool with the little slit and arc cut out. Helps when they aren't that squishy.

Thanks for the tip. I will try this next time. I always just end up using a flat head screwdriver.

    Haha.
Yea, I saw that episode as well as his newer one where he uses a newer style due to the fact that he hats the nuts.
They are so easy to use.

That doesnt work on them i used.. i think the nuts and the cutouts have different tolerances.. some are really tight. I have only managed to install and remove with screwdriver.

I wish I had time for real videos! Biggest thing I want to make a video on is moving off hyper-v to proxmox. It's sooooooo much better! Sadly the only thing I have time for is short, hand-shot stuff like this. Would that content be better than nothing? Don't want to clutter up people's feeds with crap

@@Taylordtech Probably, your audience likely doesn't need a lot of hand holding, most are probably well versed in IT. So shorter videos of interesting things probably would work fine. Like "hey look at my server with 40/50/100gig networking", or "look at my vms on proxmox with ceph". I would be fine with it.

Honesly the contents of the rack havent changed much...its just now got this fancy room all to itself with sound dampening and heat exhaust so I can have it near me without much noise.
      Suppose thats worth an update.

The Cage nuts I have are NOT that easy to compress (maybe you have superhuman fingers?) I’ve spent some good money buying different types of tools and they still are hard for me when I’m down to a 1-2U hole to insert the cage nuts (even WITH the expensive tools) …. Based on what I saw you do on this video could you tell us precisely where to order cage nuts that are that easy to compress… I don’t think they have to be so hard to put in but the ones I have so far are still really hard to install sometimes… Could you give an ordering link please for the cage nuts you showed us…. I’m willing to give it a chance without tools

The washer things are kinda trash and not worth using (unless you have a fancy new ubiquity setup you dont wanna scratch up...).

There's no way this works for every nut, I kept a flat blade screwdriver for mine and even then it was like freeing up a tectonic boundary rift

  • @JzJad

To be fair the ubuiqity ones do kinda suck...but Linus And Jake made it look really hard lol

    • @Taylordtech
      @Taylordtech  2 роки тому +3

Yeah, they're stiff as hell. Then again reasonable nuts and screws are sold on amazon for like $15 for 50. When you drop $5k on a setup like that what's an extra $15?

@@Taylordtech my experience is that almost all mounting hardware that comes with any device is garbage. I usually just toss it straight away and go with what I know works. IN the end it saves a ton of time and hassle rather than stripping some cheap screw or rack nut. I also like all my rack screws to be the same, but that may be a bit OCD>

Linus was installing Ubiquiti’s awful cage nuts. They do NOT install easily like this.
Nice title for the clicks, though.
