    This happens across all Latin America and is because english is not necessary on a daily basis, all media is in spanish and neighboring countries are other spanish speakers. TV shows & movies on public TV and most cable channels are dubbed into spanish always since the 50's. Movies at theaters are almost always exhibited with dub since 2000 due to a lawsuit from several Hollywood majors. Before that year only documentals and movies clasified as children content were dubbed, the rest runned in original subtitled version. The opposite happens in Scandinavia where almost all foreign media comes in original version exept some stuff like Dragon Ball Z.

    It's ironic that I'm having the exact same problems learning Spanish as they are in English. I'm also glad to hear they thought learning Spanish was more difficult. Makes me feel not as bad about my learning progress

    Why people are making fun of the rating they gave to themselves? Probably is because here in Colombia the level of english is so low so their english level here is considered high than the average, you shouldn't make fun of people that is learning a language because they're trying so instead of writting this things go learn something

    I took Spanish for years in high school and then a semester in college, then the only time I used it was for a 14 days trip to Peru a few years back and there were plenty of English speakers so I really didn't need to know it. As well they have so many instant pocket translators today that it's not necessary for travel but cultural immersion and respect is on a different level.
    Me gusta esta video y todos los gentes hablan mejor que yo. !Mucho respecto!

    They all rated their english a 7 or 8 and then proceed to give a sub-5 demonstration of english skills 🤣🤣

    • @suburbanman4935
      @suburbanman4935 9 місяців тому +15

      I wouldn’t say sub-five, they understood his question and gave decent answers considering how hard English is to learn as a non-native speaker. It’s a confidence thing, most Spanish speakers know way more English than they speak cause they’re scared people like you will laugh at them. Learning a language is hard, especially a diverse language like English with such a vast difference in pronunciation.

    • @LaSantaPatrona
      @LaSantaPatrona 9 місяців тому +4

      @@suburbanman4935if they were true 7/8, their responses wouldn’t be just “decent”. I’m at a very advanced level in Spanish so much that my friends tell me I’m damn near native, but I’d never rate myself 8/9 because the reality is that there’s so much to learn when it comes to a language and most of us just aren’t there yet. And that’s ok.

    • @suburbanman4935
      @suburbanman4935 9 місяців тому +1

      @@LaSantaPatrona I’m 25, 26 next month and started Spanish at age 21 and speak it between B2-C1 level so I get what you’re saying. I would definitely say I speak it 7/8 out of 10, because I understand almost all everyday vocab and have no issues conversing in the language. However I don’t agree that they’re sub-five in English. If you understand the question and respond with a level of the language that makes sense, you can rate your language 7/10 because it’s subjective.

    • @LaSantaPatrona
      @LaSantaPatrona 9 місяців тому

      @@suburbanman4935I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re sub 5 but I still think they’re nowhere near 7/8 over all. I feel like they rated themselves based on their reading and writing comprehension; which realistically speaking for most people are the easiest part, hence 7/8 there. BUT we cannot ignore that fact that speaking and listening are VERY important and where most people are lacking. I’m sure they can talk about simple topics but wouldn’t know how to express themselves on more complex subjects, a lot of them translate in their heads, and if I have to cut my speed down to 60% so they can understand where we’re speaking, they’re not at an 8. In the states, everyone speaks differently and even I as a native speaker sometimes have a hard time understanding the strange accents but I’m at a native level where even if I don’t understand every single word, my brain patches it all together and I understand. They clearly won’t have that yet. And that’s ok. All those put together are what makes a person fluent in a language. Congrats on your progress btw!

    I tell everyone I meet in Colombia, If they dont speak English, they need to learn it to have more options for better opportunities.
    Also make sure their children learn English.

    Hay un fenómeno que he percibido en mi país, y me incluyo desde mi experiencia personal. Muchos aprendimos inglés de una forma pasiva, nos sentimos cómodos escuchando o leyendo inglés, incluso diría que escribiendo también,sin embargo al intentar hablar inglés el miedo se apodera de muchos y esto empeora considerablemente nuestro desempeño en la lengua. Muchos extranjeros no tienen ese miedo, el miedo a hablar mal el español porque saben que la gente es paciente y hasta se emociona cuando ve a alguien extranjero intentando aprender nuestro idioma, sin embargo (y lo pueden notar en los comentarios), cuando un compatriota intenta hablar inglés, nos solemos burlar al más mínimo error, es importante dejar de pensar así y ser más empaticos, esta bien intentar hablar el idioma, así se empieza, con muchos errores, poco a poco se gana confianza y se aprende a hablar bien.

    thanks for the great videos. so funny that they rate themselves 7 or 8 and then come across with an 3-4 max. Maybe that's the reason why so many hispanohablantes speak fast like crazy with no sensitivity of making it easier for foreigners to understand them. although they're actually talking about THEM having difficulties to understand native english speakers. very interesting. The columbian spanish is soo funny. sounds a bit italian with that singsang. when it comes to your other videos: I wonder how many dates you got out of that intverwiews 😂you can literally see how they all have a crush on you 😉

    I think its so ironic that latin america is looked down upon for their poor English meanwhile almost nobody in the united states that takes spanish learns anything let alone understand or speak 💀 also since these are all latin/romance languages its much more difficult than for say germanic people like the dutch/germans/danish etc same and also since the latin/romance languages are so large especially Spanish and Portuguese right after and then french which is gonna only continue to explode which just makes it even less necessary for normal people to have a conversational level of english 😂 especially considering its awful orthography and inconsistent pronunciation
