Melissa Reddy discusses Ryan Gravenberch after the midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in a £34.2m deal.
The 21-year-old has signed a five-year deal with Jurgen Klopp's side and becomes the Reds' fourth summer signing - with all of them being midfielders.
The Netherlands international has joined Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo in moving to Anfield this summer after Liverpool let Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabio Carvalho depart this summer.

Indeed, Ryan was one of the first players Liverpool looked for in the midfield rebuild until he went to Bayern.
Now with Macallister, Szoboszlai, Ryan & Endo for protection that's a good Midfield.

Bayern only got Gravenberch for €18 million because he was going into the final year of gis contract. Ajax also had a sell-on clause in his Bayern contract. Rival fans are trying to inflate the price we paid. It was only £34 million €40 million Euro for a 21 yearold versatile cm with a very high ceiling. He also has 9 full caps for the Netherlands. What we paid was peanuts in todays market considering he was touted as one of the best young players in European football 12 month ago.
£34m is a fair price for someone with an apparent high ceiling in this market. Endo for £16m plus Gravenberch for £34m looks like a much better deal than £46m for Lavia (a bid that was rejected). But perhaps Klopp was hoping for a young DM specialist. Well, I am sure he can made do with two gifted young midfield generalists like Gravenberch and Bajcetic, plus the veteran Endo. And MacAllister is playing very well as a 6.

I'm really, really happy with our midfield signings. Sure, Lavia would have been superb but £50 million for a 19-year old (a year older than Stefan). We were right to hold off. Plus, throwing in high bids for Caicedo and Lavia only made Chelsea spend even more.
Our defence has always been dodgy but even when we won the Champions League and title, our best form of defence was pressing high up the pitch and retaking the ball in midfield. If we do stregthen our defence in January, I think we could bring back some silverware this season. Not sure about the title though.

Hope we go back in for Andre on the cheap in January so we have Endo, Andre and Bajcetic to fill the DM role and it can free up Gravenbrech to play more forward to where he is more suited and comfortable
I mean if Bajcetic performs too good to be a starter I don't think we will need Andre, plus we really need a CB atleast 2 of them so rather go for Defence in January
Andre is on a duel "ownership" (as happens a lot in South America) 80 - 20% so a lot of negotiations will be needed to sort that one out.

21 year's old, 6.3 ft brought through the Ajax system. Klopp can coach him to be anything he needs. Dutch lads Gakpo, VVD already at the club. It's a no-brainer, great signing.
McAllister seems to be the most versatile.Technically sound. Can literally do anything a midfielder is supposed to do. He might be our most important midfielder.
Szobo is absolute dynamite. Has the pace and strength of a box to box. But maybe better use as an attacking mid. A midfielder that can dribble past defenders, set pieces and has goals in him.
Endo. Unfortunately we are not expecting much due to the age. But he is a leader and if he can break down play and do the gritty work that is more than enough.
Gravenberch. In my opinion has the highest ceiling, yes even higher than szobo. We may be looking at a young Viera, or at least the Juventus Pogba.
Exciting times.
I was instantly convinced by Szoboszlai. Ridiculous physical specimen with brains and good technical skills. He has the potential to become the greatest midfielder of his generation.

Mac has been carded twice and doing his best on a shortsided squad. I do not think we have seen what he is capable of in a red jersey. I agree that he is likely to prove to be the most important new midfielder.

Not signing a defender is a team suicide. The seasons theyve been poor have been because theyve not covered themselves when they get injuries and left themselves short. Last season it was the midfield and 2 seasons ago it was the defence. Always a signing or two away from greatness 😢

All our midfield are ball winners and will chase to get it back, so as long as we play on the front foot, we don't need asitting midfielder. Trent to push inverted and VVD and Robbo to move in. Macca or Endo to cover. R.G & Gakpo to build a solid connection. Szobo to do his stuff. Diaz & Salah to keep defences pressed back and either Nunez or Jota to be in the middle to help start the press.
Gini was an 8 not a 6. Only Fabinho and Henderson could play six.
Gini played 6 too. When Hendo and Fab had to play CB he was the 6 along with Jones and Thiago in midfield

to 6 and then we went on a winning run. The main reason he was so unsuccessful at PSG (IMO) was because they played him there.

That was on Klopp having to rely on Hendo and Fab to play at CB instead of playing Nat Philips and Williams there due to his loyalty which we all f'in knew all along and last season shows. The main reason he didn't worked out at PSG was he was outperformed by someone like Verrati and that Danilo Perreira who play DM. He didn't even play DM at PSG he was playing quite up high in the 10 at times.

Oh Ms Reddy, you need to get your roots done, dear! Glad Klopp got his man over the line, but I'm baffled why he hasn't also gone all out for a new centre-back to provide cover and competition to Van Dijk and Konaté. Jerrol Quansah has a lot of promise for the future, but his lack of first team experience makes me nervous. He didn't let us down last weekend, but expecting him to provide a seamless alternative to either of the established pairing week in, week out is a lot of pressure to put onto such youthful shoulders.
