Working on a review as well for this package though it’ll take some time. My disappointment is not getting the full gadget treatment for both Japan and western releases, especially given how preferable the western ports are to play sometimes. Or in this case the 2P Japan version of Same3 which was also toned way down and more accessible. I can understand the business behind it as they are coding these from scratch via reverse engineering the PCBs which is a huge task. And they just don’t have the time or budget to do that and implement full gadgets for every version. So they’re making a compromise and choosing the original or definitive version and giving that the royal treatment. So I get it even though I do lament the missed opportunity. I believe the physical has all DLC included and you can bet I’ll complain about no English menus in the hopes someone will listen. But I’m looking forward to also showing the flying shark nes port as though it can’t compare to the arcade, it was hugely nostalgic for many of us and sold like hotcakes in the day. Flying Shark was actually Toaplan’s best seller of all time and hugely influential. So I’m not surprised at all you enjoyed it more than the second game. Many do. It’s simple but also well designed and a great difficulty. Yuge-san the programmer lamented in an old interview that he was forced to make the second game much harder vs his original intent. I’ve got some new info and tidbits to share on that.
I think the lack of English menus is a big turn off for some, at least a few of my friends won’t buy them because the lack of English menus. Not me tho
Oh HOT DAMN You have the insider info on the games now that you know the programmer. I'm pretty sure that's cheating ;-) Yeah, the missing gadgets on the western versions were an odd omission. Ironically I hardly use the gadgets outside of reviews since I play in Tate, but the checkpoint gadget was super useful for the review ha. Like I said in my review, my biggest issue with fire shark is how they did the powerup system. If the powerups behaved themselves better that would have really improved the game in my opinion, because when you combine the erratic powerups with the slow movement and wicked bullet speeds, you get a nasty difficulty spike ha. I respect the difficulty for sure, but it's not the type of difficulty style that I respond to as a player. I do think it's a huge bummer the console ports aren't included because they are really fun and ironcally the release feels a bit incomplete without them. These day's I'm trying to be a bit more strict with the pricing, especially after my conversations with new players, so I think a base price of $20 or having the dlc included would go a long way towards making the game an easier buy for people. And yes, translate the damn menus m2 ha.
@@queloide4803 I am surprised the DLC is included since it wasn't in the last release (kk tiger + tiger heli). Or was it and I bought it for no reason? I am very disappointed the 2P version is not included, I really expected it to be part of this release. And after the last garage title I expected to get all home ports as well! Very disappointing. Oh, and I think the Same3 improvement hack by trap15 should have been included, too! ;)
This and the previous release are some of my favourite STG and I find these ports a landmark in the history of the genre. They are essential shooters. I’m happy M2 gave the treatment they deserve.
Yeah shottriggers always treat these releases with respect. Can't go wrong. Shame they didn't include a new arrange mode though, thought would have been great.
@@TheElectricUnderground well costume mode is a bit of a DIY Arrange. And they gave us GG3 not along ago…let see if the more contemporary titles lend themselves better for a proper Arrange. Congrats on the review Mark, it was a enjoyable viewing.
I have few complaints about the last two Shot triggers releases. I have a very diverse approach to what I play in the genre. The two Toaplan arcade garage releases are of slower pace and represent some of the building blocks of "modern" Shootemups. These are treasures and pure pieces of history with the option of more playable modes for newcomers. I own every Shot trigger physical release. The last two are just as "exciting" in historical context. I play them on their own individual merits and places in history. Here's hoping that the Shot triggers treatment continues to go all over the map, with an emphasis on previously arcade-only releases and the greatest genre developers, regardless of their styles. These are my favorite series of ports in gaming. Looking forward to the next release...
Yeah I agree. I think these games and releases are great, but they do lack a little of the shottriggers X Factor that make their previous ports so exciting and detailed. Like the character portraits being animated in Mahou or the dancing little men in Feveron ha.
While I do appreciate M2 finally digging out 80s early 90s Toaplan games I'm hoping theyd eventually give Donpachi, Dodonpachi, Espgaluda 1, Ibara the remasters they desperately deserve
Review is great as always but if you buy the physical you get access to the DLC versions as the codes are in pack. This was based on my purchase of the last one. Had to set up a JP account but codes were in the box. Please stop being negative in regards to content that IS included in the physical. I genuinely love the channel by the way. Flying Shark made me fall in love with shmups.
Hi my dude I did talk about this in the review where I mentioned that yes the DLC is included in the physical version, but the physical version is also a hefty $60! So my thoughts were that they should drop down that physical version price a little, at least to $50. $60 is a huge price tag for a lot of players.
@@TheElectricUndergroundVery valid point but think that most of us accept the higher price tag (right or wrong) as it is by primarily import that we buy these games so although not morally right, it goes with the territory. I genuinely see your point though. I live in the UK so have no M2 Shottriggers at all to buy so likely influences my thoughts on this.
Flying Shark was the first shmup I got into in the arcade so this is a must buy for me, glad to hear its a solid port. Flying Shark was the shmup I would compare other shmups to because of my love for it. As played through other Toaplan games and then moving onto all the great Cave titles I felt like I grew with this genre as the developers found new ways to push the genre forward. It made sense to me hearing an ex Toaplan dev saying this is the building block for the genre, as I could feel this playing through the catalogue of games. Thanks great video
All these are playable in emulation via CRT monitors, which make them really difficult to just collect at this price and without a worldwide release. They are dedicated to Japan masters that do not keep legacy hardware around anymore. I got the Battle Garegga box for my collection but stopped there.
Mark-senpai did an upload? oh this is gonna be good. Time to take notes. granted, I've been wanting to hear more about 鮫/same/shark and ketsui. So yes ready to soak up your knowledge mark.
I've only played the Genesis version, but the bouncing unwanted powerups is one of the funniest things about the game. I reminds me of avoiding the weapons you don't want in Ghouls n Ghosts. But you just have to deal with it (if you're not a serious scorechaser) and switch up your weapons like it wants you to, to have some variety. The fire weapon is too overpowered as it is, so they want you to switch to the others I think. Twin Hawk (Daisenpu) is more pared down too with the "bomb" being your squadron of ships you can choose to dive-bomb all at once, but I remember it didn't have much in the way of powerups. The game is interesting because it's more slow and strategic, and you're always shooting ground vehicles, instead of other aircraft.
I think the bouncing powerups are less of an issue in the genesis version since it's much more lenient difficulty wise, once you get into the Japan version of the game though, man they start to really drive you crazy ha.
They announced in 2020 their Toaplan port lineup, and the next ones are (supposedly) going to be Out Zone and Truxton II, which are much more exciting. Specially Truxton II in the case it goes with a Truxton port. This along with Senxin Aleste (hopefully it will be released officially on consoles), Aleste Branch and Ubusana (which seems a reality by recent updates!!) hopefully will mean that the M2 hype will be back to proper form. Great review as always!
@@reinhart.sieger It's probably going to be like that. These releases have the pattern of the "important game" + the accompanying game. Mark, we need a place to collect petitions to BEG/promise developers and IPs to buy ports for Emergency games that don't have em. Like Batrider, Sorcer Striker (sp), etc and perhaps even some other ones that are only pcb. I'd promise at least double the cost of a port, know what I'm saying? Love your work, making my way thru it all thrice like a good schmupper!
I've just ordered this from Play Asia - I agree the Tiger Heli collection was a little lacking and this package is probably more of the same but I'm a huge Fire Shark fan and I'll be great to play the MD version on a modern console as well as try some of the arcade versions I've never played. I agree the power-up system is slightly obnoxious in Fire Shark - it's like "You have the flame shot, here's a green... what don't want it? Here's 5 to totally fill the screen!!" in the later levels when you really can't have a weapon change because survival demands it, the power-ups become like enemies on screen. MD Fire Shark is still a pretty easy one though, and a great starting point for any novice.
I hope M2 is just trying to go back through and doing the oldest releases first now. Hopefully in the future they continue to move more forward with more recent releases
Thanks. I don't know why they didn't include Daisenpuu (western name: Twin Hawk) It's in the same time period and wheelhouse as these two, though not strictly the same series. Maybe not feasible within the budget? If they're not going to put it with these two I don't suppose they ever will, unless they do some kind of odds 'n sods collection later.
I was just talking about BatRider a couple days ago. Such a rad game, with no home port. It's going to be on the SEGA Astro City mini V, coming soon, but it will probably be a crap port. I'd kill for the Shottriggers treatment like Garrega!! Hopefully (in a couple years probably) after M2 is done with Toaplan, they'll go back to some Raizing and Cave stuff.
Thanks... for sideways justifying my autobombing practice on Garega too. Between that and just slowly improving hand control like your other video, those made practicing Garega more and more relaxing and making me also love it dearly so that I increase the challenge to see what else it has to offer. My Tate room for me and the kids has 4 screens and its growing, it's...very cool because they span big old flat screens to projectors. Tate room does have a couple DVD-tvs combs that are old but flat enough to flip. I love old big but like 4 inch thich TVs, like the 52-60s Samsung me and the rents had laying around. Combine that with my hording. I've had a growing assortment of TV mounts and desk arms that just happened to combine with like 10 TVS really across 3 rooms. Plus I'm growing furniture slowly like pacmac tables. Testing out Tate with some cheap projectors now. Be good
Yeah really wish they would start adding new arranges like they did with ketsui and Garrega which I finally played. Those new arranges in the ports were like medium modes. Where super easy was easy, the premium/deathtiny was medium and arcade was hard. I bought tiger hell collection, I liked it but it’s wasn’t $60 more around $30. So I’m somewhat hesitant with this one. The physical comes with all the dlc on the cart except for teki teki paki which is that puzzle game that was in the tiger heli collection. It’s only available physically I believe but it’s not a cart it’s a download code. I guess they just have that game and don’t know what to do with it so yeah lol. Might pick it up but might not. If you connect the covers to this and tiger heli they connect so big brain me is thinking once the third game is done which would go on the right (tiger heli in the middle and same same same on the left) they’ll release that in one big collection
Yes I feel the same. I love the release and think it's worth picking up. Just right now the price is a little hard to justify unless you are already on board as a fireshark fan. I think including the dlc with the base game or dropping that base price to $20 would help a lot.
I agree with you this seems in between the Darius Ports and ShotTriggers... its like Half-Triggers... I think economically its probably okay but its just not adding up to me enough to pick them up as I feel these games just dont have enough to offer in terms of modes, challenges, ships, etc. And in previous shottriggers the games had that and then MORE was added to make them even more fun... Also do these have music arranges? I always expect at least one music arrange that makes the package worthwhile. The console ports being separated in the E shop as DLC also doesnt bode that well to me. These Toaplan ports have not appealed to me yet.
Love the Shark series. Yes, they have some stupid things but man, they are pure history and have very strong nostalgia factor for me. The only question i have is: when Xbox or PC ports? i need this shit! PD: another great fan of arrange modes here ^^ PD2: I've been thinking for a long time that M2 would end up releasing a port of the great Dodonpachi (with Campaign version!) . Hope this dream come true one day!
I'm kind of on the fence about the two Toaplan collections, but what really pushes me into "not buy" territory is the lack of English. The custom modes are how I would get the most out of these games, and needing to try and Google Translate my way to figuring out a fun custom mode just doesn't make it worth the like $80 it takes to import each one. I can understand why a physical western release wouldn't be profitable to them, but is it really not even worth releasing digital versions over here? We're the Ketsui and Garrega sales really THAT BAD?
I'm in the same train of thought. why aren't they being released in NA PSN? did esp ra de sell that bad on switch they didn't think it was worth it sale wise? I'm kinda worried about the ray collection as tatio or M2 won't say anything about a NA PSN release. I don't want to have make a Japanese PSN just for shumps. I just wish they would release sorcer striker and esp ra de psi on NA PSN. I mean it's no big deal I have most of these games on mame but I'd like to show these companies that there is a market in NA for these old shumps over here.
I 've been a Toaplan Fanboy since I first played Slapfight 1986. I'll take any old school shooters from 1985 - 1994 over today's manic shooters. I just can't stand the tiny hitbox in modern shmups...
@@TheElectricUnderground That's what I never understood. In old school shooters the hitbox is the sprite. What you see is what you get; If a bullet touches the sprite, then you die; it is deterministic, and it is your fault for not dodging the bullet. In manic shooter, the hitbox is mostly at center of the ship, and it is difficult (for me) to gauge where the hitbox outer limit stops at. This leads to dodging by luck vs dodging by intend. This approach renders gameplay indeterministic (from a player perspective) and completely voids the gameplay for me. Anyway, this is my rant of the day against Manic shooter. :)
Same Same Same isn’t that hard, I mean sure it is hard, but not impossible. Part of the game is learning how to manipulate & milk the power ups to heavily increase your score, eg: at one point in lv 2 there’s a lot of big planes coming at you, that drop 4 of 5 greens at the same time, the key is to know exactly when to pick them all up to get 25000 points and that next plane will then drop a blue or a red, it works every time. I did a 1CC no death vid about 2 months or so ago, it is on my chan, scroll to 8 minutes in the vid & you’ll see exactly what I mean. Great vid man, keep it up 👍
Nice! That sounds like some impressive routing ha! Yeah these old school shmups are interesting how momentum based they are, where if you are on route and don't die, it's manageable for sure.
@@TheElectricUnderground true, I played both games in the arcade when they came out & they were amazing for the time. The “wildcard” flamethrower in the second game was beyond anything out there, the way it made the entire screen come alive…truly a great era
Is there a chance M2 will do Batsugun Special someday soon? The Saturn port is great, but more people need access to one of the greatest shmups of all time.
Great release by M2 as always, but f**k the DLC code included with physical version. Put the damn DLC and the english menu on the damn disc! Come on M2!!!
The physical was a little pricey but I am enjoying this collection so far. I agree that a few arranged modes would have increased the value. Good review 👍
@@TheElectricUnderground I've been looking forward to Truxton II and OutZone since they announced their intentions. I suck at these games but I keep buying them lol

Ha I know I feel like toaplan are trolling us a bit with that name XD "triple same!" Might work ha. I like that they have the home console parts, just wish they were included in base price, or dropped the base price to 20
@@TheElectricUnderground I don't mind the price. Over my lifetime I'll put as many hours into this as I have Elden Ring. I just wish they'd release them quicker. Surely they've got the gadget template for Toaplan games down by now.

@Mr. Coffee This is how it was for the kyukyoku tiger heli collection as well for PS4. Switch version of that collection had the games on cart, so I assume it'll be the same thing here.
Yes it's on there, but the physical version is also $60 and I think that's too steep, at least for me personally. I think a 40-50 price point would have worked better, considering there is no arrange. If they made an arrange for the games, I'd say the price it totally fair.
It does, but the dlc is not on disc from what I understand. And the physical version is $60, so that's a pretty hefty price. Not a deal breaker, but a sting to the wallet for sure
So question, Switch released a game titled TOAPLAN ARCADE GARAGE FLYING SHARK SKY SHARK in Japan. On ebay, in one of the screen shot's, it show's the different version's of the game, including the one that I want titled "Sky Shark" (as I played as a kid) Is this an option to play that version on the Japanese release or is it just showing a history of the game and you actually only play the Japanese version? It's pricey at $70 but I would really like to add to my switch collection and bring back a few memory's. thanks in advance to anyone that knows!
It's a shame that M2 is feeling pressured to extract more of a profit from their products. I understand why, but that doesn't change the corrosive and exploitative influence capitalism has on production.

I'd kill for the Shottriggers treatment like Garrega!! Hopefully (in a couple years probably) after M2 is done with Toaplan, they'll go back to some Raizing and Cave stuff.
My views exactly
I love the mega drive version! Cant wait to try the arcade version :)
Yes for sure! Just beware it's a mean boy difficulty wise
Thanks... for sideways justifying my autobombing practice on Garega too.
Thanks Mark, this should be in the mail any daya now K tiger has been bitter sweet
Yeah I feel the ports are solid and all, just a bit of a step down compared to the older ports
Yeah I think a music arrange and a gameplay arrange would have went a long way to justify the price
Great review as always!
Thanks so much my dude!!
Flying Shak was well known over here in te UK due to the home computer parts .I was always confused about the Sky Shark renaming!
Love the Shark series. Yes, they have some stupid things but man, they are pure history and have very strong nostalgia factor for me.
The only question i have is: when Xbox or PC ports? i need this shit!
PD: another great fan of arrange modes here ^^
PD2: I've been thinking for a long time that M2 would end up releasing a port of the great Dodonpachi (with Campaign version!) . Hope this dream come true one day!
I absolutely dream of the day M2 release dodonpachi with campaign version, I d be so excited
Yeah they need to make the English menus happen, seriously!
Now imagine that physical price with PlayAsia shipping bruh lmao
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh jeez , yeah I bet shipping is Alot right now
Cart has all the dlc except the puzzle game
I 've been a Toaplan Fanboy since I first played Slapfight 1986. I'll take any old school shooters from 1985 - 1994 over today's manic shooters. I just can't stand the tiny hitbox in modern shmups...
Oh that's interesting! I personally love tiny hitbox in games ha
I agree completely, there is just something better about older shmups like Raiden and Sorcer Striker.
Since you’ve mentioned Batrider, I hope when they do it, it’s with both the old music and new music included. The new music is by Manabu Namiki.
Absolutely! they gotta give batrider the vip treatment like garegga
I think so!! Probably at the end of the toaplan collection, they would be insane not too
Awesome review. I love M2, but still no English version of the settings menus I see. That's disappointing.
YES NO KIDDING! I'm starting to suspect they are secretly sponsored by google translate .... XD
Great release by M2 as always, but f**k the DLC code included with physical version. Put the damn DLC and the english menu on the damn disc! Come on M2!!!
Yes separating it out is very naughty since it tanks the resell value in the future and it's just annoying.
The physical was a little pricey but I am enjoying this collection so far. I agree that a few arranged modes would have increased the value. Good review 👍
Thanks my dude! Yes I hope they tune down the price a little in the future
Another great review- need to get a ps4 or switch(lite) then I can play them!
For sure, I think you should be able to pick up a cheap PS4 soon!
Bought the physical. The problem you have with this niche games is that prices most all the time go up and not down (I've paid 90€ for the Ketsui one)
I actually have a whole podcast episode about this topic! It's an interesting discussion! ua-cam.com/video/47KK4liKP5E/v-deo.html
Passed on the Tiger-Heli package but I will likely pick this one up at some point. Any idea what's next from M2?
I think truxton? That would be my guess
@@TheElectricUnderground I've been looking forward to Truxton II and OutZone since they announced their intentions. I suck at these games but I keep buying them lol
@@damonke79 can't go wrong, the ports are solid :-)
M2 could have so much of my money if they just made PC ports...
What s wierd is that they port some of their shmups, but not shottrigger for some reason
@@TheElectricUnderground Yup, picked up their Darius collection on the hope they'd get the message :)
Fireshark boxart dude looks just like you in this vid
Ha that s great!
Playasia says the DLC is on the cartridge. (Probably why it’s so much more expensive?)
Yes DLC is included, but NOT on the cartridge, just as a download code. So you get it, but I think they should have put it on the cart.
@@TheElectricUnderground oh that’s lame and ya I agree. They know we’re going to be playing these in 20 years too lol
Fuck saying Same! Same! Same! I just call it Flying Shark 2. I bought the DLC. I love Wardner. I'll never play the home ports, but I appreciate it being the definitive version and including them.
Why not just call it Fire Shark - you know, the official name for the western release of the game?
Ha I know I feel like toaplan are trolling us a bit with that name XD "triple same!" Might work ha. I like that they have the home console parts, just wish they were included in base price, or dropped the base price to 20
@@firenze8938 Because I like Flying Shark 2 and you don't matter to me.
@@TheElectricUnderground I don't mind the price. Over my lifetime I'll put as many hours into this as I have Elden Ring. I just wish they'd release them quicker. Surely they've got the gadget template for Toaplan games down by now.
Bought it..boy it's expensive but after the previous toaplan collection, i had to buy it from playasia along with other switch games...i also bought the new pocky e rocky
Yeah it is super expensive!
I am trying to get the EU T-shirt with the astronaut, but the ones that are linked too are different. Any Ideas?
Yes follow this video! ua-cam.com/video/1t_y7XipPWk/v-deo.html
I believe the physical version includes the DLC does it not? I haven’t received my copy yet but I thought I heard it did.
It included a code to download the dlc, but not on disc. So it s 60 bucks, I think that s actually more expensive then buying the digital dlc and game
My PS4 physical copy is in its way from Play Asia - am I now assuming I will not get the DLC included with it? 😬
You will get the dlc as a code but not on the disc. From what I understand the physical version is 60, whereas the digital version with no dlc is 30
@@TheElectricUnderground thanks for the info - I guess I still can't use the code if I have no Japanese PSN account then 😬
I think the physical version does include the DLC, tho, right?
Does the physical version include the dlc ?
It does, but the dlc is not on disc from what I understand. And the physical version is $60, so that's a pretty hefty price. Not a deal breaker, but a sting to the wallet for sure
thanks boss
You got it!!
Hi, would someone post an english translation of the menus here. That would be great!
Does anyone know if dlc is included with physical? Either on the cartridge or free download?
I you change display size?
Cant seem to find it in the ps4 store?
"Same! Same! Same!" was like a concept for the first Raiden game. The wide shot and the thermonuclear bomber weapons are shared with Raiden.
absolutely! I reminds me a lot of raiden. Too bad it doesn't have a super speed ship ha
Physical all day!
Absolutely! just beware that the dlc is not on the disc, it is a download code, which I think is a bummer.
It's a shame that M2 is feeling pressured to extract more of a profit from their products. I understand why, but that doesn't change the corrosive and exploitative influence capitalism has on production.
Yeah I do think it s a shame compared to previous ports in that sense, but hopefully they bring the heat in the batsugun port!
