Seriously. These videos seem like they should be getting more recognition than they are for the amount of quality he puts into them. This is the first video I've watched of his and so far I think he's really good at explaining history, especially in his simplestic style
Hmmm, if they offered 20 places to go Mars to set up a colony with high chance of death you think it they will struggle to fill spots? There will always be adventurous people.
Real problem is to find the one out of the thousands who are just not capable of such a feat. It's about picking harmony. One weak spot in a team will doom everyone. So yeah, they will 100% struggle. Especially in those days we live in. And if you aren't an engineer or some kind of doctor or pilot it doesn't even matter if you have the mental and physical abilities because no one is interested to send the average Joe to mars.
@@0ompaLoompawow u r so smart and informed, what position do you have at NASA? Or maybe you work for space x? It couldn't be that you are just chronically online and have no idea what you are talking about but I will give you props for doing it confidently
@@0ompaLoompaIf u go to space I doubt you're really worrying about what the guy next to you believes in.. just hope everyone knows how to do their job to keep everything running
It won't be too much of a struggle, considering there are only about 600 trained astronauts on Earth to choose from. It's probably not too hard to pick out the 20 most qualified men and women from a pool of 600.
Shackleton and Crean were from Ireland. Fun fact Ballykilcavan brewery brew a dark mild ale called Endurance near to where Shackleton grew up. Shackleton’s boat journey is well worth the read.
People like Scott looked down on shackleton because of his irish heritage. The British aristocracy are so stupid. Shackleton is my hero, I wish I could be even half the man shackleton was. I am English (Yorkshire) btw. 👍
I sailed the weddel sea on an antarctic expedition and got stuck in the ice for a few days. It was from the comfort of a modern research icebreaker ( 19:08 left panel, RV Polarstern) so i can not even begin to fathom the danger and uncertainty Shakleton and his crew were facing. There was talk around the ship that worst case scenario we would be stuck for a few weeks until the ice drift spits us out into the open ocean allowing us to sail back to Chile. But there was no concern whatsoever. There was only slight annoyance at the possibility of not being back home in time.
A while back, I watched a video about survival. It said the single most important thing to survival isn't water, food, or shelter.. it's the WILL to survive. I think this story encapsulates that well. They had basically nothing, but refused to let that stop them.
wow this journey is actually mindblowing. Consider that I mainly got into history through learning about explorers, this was easily the best Christmas video I could have asked for on UA-cam. Can't wait for what's next on this channel!
Hello from the algorithm! The production quality of this video pleased me. Thank you for your research and the work you put in to give it to us in this format!
19:52 Shakleton was obviously knighted before the Endurance expedition. Also a great pity you did not honour the members of his crew who died in the war after surviving that ordeal.
I know the views definitely don’t match the effort that you put into these videos sunless, but I just wanna say I love watching them even more than the RL ones and I hope you keep making them
Hey I’ve watched you for years sunless every video big RL guy and it was awesome to watch one of my favorite creators with my girl and have her enjoy him thank you sunless keep going big dawg
I am glad you included the most incredible fact, but underdid the emphasis. The trip from Elephant Island to South Georgia was a direct hit, crossing 800 miles of southern ocean in an open boat. Can you imagine the skill of the navigator to even take a sextant reading? When they could even see the sun that is, in a pitching boat. Sextant readings have to be at the same time each day so this is as incredible as any other part of this story - I think the only other element that comees close is the crossing of South Georgia itself. Frank Worsley was a New Zealander who captained the Endurance.
I absolutely adore these passion projects from you. I am an educator, I would love to work with you to align some USA-wide benchmarks and standards to these instructional videos and get these into more classrooms.
That was an awesome video man. People back then were different. I’d imagine that convenience just didn’t exist in any way shape or form. They were used to pain and hardship on a level the majority of people today are not familiar with.
That was an awesome retelling. I had no idea they found the boat must have missed that news but I've heard Shakletons story many times. Excellent video
Endurance was such a fitting name for their ship - their crew are now the heroes in one of humanity's greatest demonstrations of enduring through hardship.
Wow. What a story. I enjoyed your tongue in cheek style. I was expecting survival tips. But this might be better. I'll let you know otherwise if I die in a shipwreck.
I expected some kind of tutorial and ended up getting served the probably most heroic story i ever heard. I knew the name Shackleton before and I knew that he was an adventurer but i did not expected such an unbelievable story. He must have been a great guy and if you are a realist, you must come to the conclusion that if he chose just one guy who wasn't fully invested, this whole story would have no happy end.
You left out or missed a lot of really interesting context. For example, Perce Blackboro and his buddy were actually looking for employment in the city where the Endurance was getting loaded up. Blackboro's friend got hired onto the Endurance but because Blackboro was inexperienced and only 18 they didn't take him on. So his friend and another member of the crew that were worried the ship was shorthanded, smuggled him onboard in a locker with a bunch of clothes. He was only discovered on the 3rd day but by then it was too late to turn back. The following account then took place which was pretty hilarious: "Apparently in a fit of genuine rage, Shackleton subjected the stowaway to a most severe and terrifying tirade in front of the entire crew. This had the desired effect and the reactions of the two accomplices were enough to unmask them. Shackleton finished his performance by saying to Blackborow, "Do you know that on these expeditions we often get very hungry, and if there is a stowaway available he is the first to be eaten?" To which Blackborow replied, "They’d get a lot more meat off you, sir." Shackleton hid a grin and after chatting with one of the crew members said "Introduce him to the cook first."
Having to put down ur own k9 group member to survive has got to hurt so tremendously bad. I feel some way for the men just thinking about it rn. And the poor pups too, they never filled out any sign up form :(
imagine you’re young and your girl just dumped you or your parents kicked you out and you see that advertisement… i wonder what made people want to go on such a crazy dangerous journey
you fool. everyone knows the sun isn't square -- it's rectangular. you screwed the pooch. you fluffed the pillow. you really swallowed the dart and tore the ham this time! subscribed.
If this story interests you at all viewers, the book has so many incredible additional details such as their high speed slide down a mtn in South Georgia, or the horror of living on a ship you know is being actively crushed by incredible forces of nature.
Came in expecting a survival guide. Instead got a gripping tale of people who never gave up.
He got them ALL home, not one human life lost. Shackleton was an amazing man. I can't express how much I respect him.
