It can actually be argued to be a good thing, since it meant kids were eating fresh vegetables instead of color change desert, chemically enhanced French fry dip, or fast food.

Honestly, the shrek onions weren't a bad idea. Kinda wished they had done a whole with green veggies.
"Why are ogres green? Cause they eat their greens!" Would have been a good way to help kids eat healthy. What a missed opportunity.

Shrek was basically unstoppable in the 00s, even Toy Story had a hard time keeping up with the amount of consumer products Shrek had.
Shrek was a marketing FORCE. No other franchise occupied as much shelf space as Shrek.

I had a buzz lightyear soap as a kid in the 90s / early 2000's and I refused to use it because it smelled so good.

I mean he wasn’t wrong. Twinkies are essentially poison when you look at the sugar content and amount of processed crap that goes into them, plus the stuff in the green dye. It’s was vacuum packed diabetes.
8:08 I kinda respect him for addressing that the character himself is not the problem, it’s the companies that tried to use his image to sell unhealthy foods to kids. Because I feel like some adult would just pin the blame on the characters themselves for selling stuff to kids, when often the visions of artists that create those kind of characters don’t always aline with the intentions of the companies distributing them when they get put on products.
People thought the minions were bad for being slapped on everything, but they don't even hold a candle to the amount of Shrek-branded items that could be seen in stores during the 2000s. The main difference being that Shrek wasn't absolutely insufferable
It's likely because of the fact Shrek is a likeable character, and I think a green guy who is slightly jaded, but still smiles and smirks is more appealing than one eyed yellow twinkie people with big smiles.
I'd take the Shrek candies over the minion tictacs every day. I received so many of them from out-of-touch relatives and they were the literal worst. they had a medicinal banana flavour, they made your breath smell worse and they were truly terrible to open. I'd take Shrek's green apple or sometimes lime-flavoured candies as the chance of lime is superior to the suffering that is an artificial banana. hell, I'd even take onion-flavoured tictacs over banana ones.

When I was younger I had a Fiona themed bath set. The whole gag was that it was like a swamp, and the bath products were like a mud. I can still remember the smell, but I’m convinced I hallucinated it because I can’t find any evidence it existed no matter where I search.

I work at Goodwill and we have pictures of the Puss in Boots McDonalds glass taped up with a warning saying not to sell it. I've actually seen a couple of them get donated.

As a kid I had a Kid Cuisine with Shrek on the box, I opened it and saw it was a green tray and didn't think twice about it, eat my lunch and then threw the green tray away, a few days later I had another kid cuisine with Shrek on the box and noticed that tray was blue, didn't think twice about it, later had another kid cuisine (ate that a lot as a kid) with Shrek on the box tray was blue, was confused and read the back of the box and saw if you had the green tray you were a winner, I was so disappointed in myself

it's actually a problem that was all too real. I don't know how bad it is these days, but back in the day, mascots had serious selling power. Tony the Tiger made us think Frosted Flakes were an after-sports snack! lol

It's manipulative enough that all of Latin and South America banned cartoon mascots in advertising over the last three years. Mexico was the last hold put, banning the practice last year. Go look up how Mexican super markets dealt with it. You'll see workers putting red tape over the Lucky Charms Leprechaun on boxes they bought before the ban.
Australia is set to pass similar legislation and the EU is considering the same thing, but have yet to put formal legislation.
Needless to say, it's controversial and may well see its end here in the states before long. I suspect around the same time Mickey is forced into public domain and Disney losses an incentive to have cartoon mascots.
Despite that politician's easily memeable presentation, he made a good point. There was a huge pushback against fast food and junk food mascots for that very reason. It's why McDonald's rarely uses Ronald and never uses the other characters, for example

A cashier at Walmart had a funny story that a woman in a rush bought a Shrek snickers which if I remember was when the 3rd movie was coming out. She started eating it and noticed it was green inside that she freaked out and thought she was eating a expired snickers.

Honestly, Kid Cuisine being stuck in the late 1990s and early '00s makes a whole lot of sense when their mascot is a CGI'd penguin named after the thing they're selling. Also, Shrek onions make sense.

Honestly, here in Argentina it was all about Shrek during the 2000's, and we loved it. We didn't get the Twinkies and the Cuisine things, fortunately, but we did get tons of McDonald's toys, cereal promotions and a lot more things I can barely remember. Such a Shrektastic era ❤️

My dad was actually a district manager at McDonald’s during the shrek glass fiasco. Somehow he was able to get all the glasses for the promotion for free, so I remember getting them vividly. We obviously gave them all back but for some reason I thought the whole situation was hilarious.

This video made me remember some deep ass memories of these Shrek game books I used to have, and you could like make up stories by choosing alternative words on premade stories and draw on Shrek among other things
The Shrek marketing went so out of control it went full circle with the onions going from trash to veggies lol
I think a history of things like overdone over aggressive movie tie ins or marketing things similar to Shrek mania would be fun. Others that i think of are the 90s pokemon pokemania products... the current overuse of The minions come to mind. But it'd be fun to look at past generations of yester year too

I actually think using Shrek to market onions is genius since it actually correlates with the movie.
The reason why McDonald's keeps trying to sell pasta is because of Jollibee. The Filipino fast food brand is huge in Southeast Asia and Oceania, rivaling and even surpassing McDonald's in some areas. Jollibee's menu features burgers, fried chicken, palabok noodles and their famous spaghetti with Filipino-style tomato sauce. That's why McDonald's is trying to copy their success.

@@mrcritical6751 I've been to Jollibee a few times, they've opened a few test locations near Toronto, Canada. Tbh the burgers, palabok and spaghetti are pretty mediocre. I like the aloha burger tho. But the fried chicken was really good.

Me and my best friend or in our late 50s and he had bought some twinkies and brought them over. I said I had not had a Twinkie and over 20 years. We open the box both got one and took a bite in the filling was Green. We start spitting it out thinking it was bad until we looked on the front of the box and read the label. We still laugh about this from time to time.

I remember the same weekend the first Shrek movie came out, Baskin Robbins (the 31 flavour Ice Cream joint) had a promotion for Shrek flavoured Smoothies. You had the Green Shrek flavour and then there was blue flavour for Donkey. This lasted for only a few weeks however and the smoothies were discontinued for whatever reason despite Shrek 1 becoming all the hype
For the record, those smoothies were actually pretty good. I remember loving the blue Donkey one when I had it.

It was neat that you referenced the 2004 Joe Gibbs cars. NASCAR has had a history of neat sponsorships and I reccomend taking a look into some of them.
They also did it again with Shrek The Third paint schemes during the 2007 season.

McDonald's probably wants pasta on their menus so bad because they can produce it for pennies and sell it for like $5+. I can't even imagine what the profit margins on that would be.
They actually used to sell spaghetti. However, it actually didn't turn up a huge profit, and so it was discontinued everywhere except the Philipines (as spaghetti is a staple dish over there), and Orlando for some reason. After all, people don't come to McDonald's for spaghetti and breadsticks, they go for burgers and fries. Plus, pasta is super easy to make at home and is fairly cheap to. You can also have leftovers for days.

My parents used to buy us the Shrek Fruit by the Foot snacks, they were green instead of red and sour and so delicious. One time when I was 4 years old I ate the whole box and threw up afterwards, it’s one of my most favorite memories lmao
Not Shrek related but I was 5 in 1994 and ate a whole box of Blue raspberry gushers and my mom had a fit lol. Thankfully it didn't make me sick. But I will never forget that. She didn't buy Gushers very much after that.

@@slow_start I can't help but feel like they could easily recreate a "natural" green ketchup by using tomatilloes instead of tomatoes, much like salsa verde does.
I mean, that actually *might* work as "exotic foods" are a trend now. I could see a Shrek themed "verde" ketchup selling well.

I can remember begging my mom for Shrek Kids Cuisine. 😂 She caved and bought it for me & my siblings. The pudding 100% did change your tongue green.

The early 2000s were wild! There was a new strange kids candy or snack every day! I remember watching cartoons and you'd get bombarded by ads of tons of stuff! I remember being obsessed with the 1st Shrek when it came out. I even have a story...
I remember being at my aunts house and she was keeping there for a day or two. We had Shrek on VHS and I wanted to watch it. The weather had been REALLY bad out too! I watched all of Shrek and my aunt was like, "hey can we check the weather? It sounds bad out there!" And I was like "yeah....right after I watch Shrek one more time! >:D"
so i watched the whole thing a 2nd time and at the Tornado sirens were going off right at the end of the movie. My aunt finally checked the weather and she said "oh lord! We gotta go get in the closet!"
The weather was rough, and my aunt probably got scared, but i just couldn't refuse Shrek, his love, and my fascination with him! Good times back then, man! 😅🤣👌🏻

You've unlocked a memory for me!! I remember eating the Shrek ravioli as a kid. It just tasted like the regular beef/ cheese ravioli I'd get from the grocery store. I remember them having that starchy-sticky feeling and opening them up the filling were like these little squares. I think there was like some savoury tomato sauce as well (by Heinz btw). We never got the tongs however.

Ah misaimed marketing in a nutshell. The worst one is the PSA from when the 3rd movie came out that had the characters telling kids to get out and play to be active and healthy. But then you remember their faces are plastered on every junk food item in the book from Twinkies to McDonald's!
6:24. Ugh, green apple flavored Nesquick mix? I normally like green apple stuff, but why would I want green apple flavored milk? Also regular Nesquick mix in my milk made me throw up every time I tried it, why would I ever want a green apple one?
