People thought the minions were bad for being slapped on everything, but they don't even hold a candle to the amount of Shrek-branded items that could be seen in stores during the 2000s. The main difference being that Shrek wasn't absolutely insufferable
It's likely because of the fact Shrek is a likeable character, and I think a green guy who is slightly jaded, but still smiles and smirks is more appealing than one eyed yellow twinkie people with big smiles.
I'd take the Shrek candies over the minion tictacs every day. I received so many of them from out-of-touch relatives and they were the literal worst. they had a medicinal banana flavour, they made your breath smell worse and they were truly terrible to open. 8:08 I kinda respect him for addressing that the character himself is not the problem, it’s the companies that tried to use his image to sell unhealthy foods to kids. It's manipulative enough that all of Latin and South America banned cartoon mascots in advertising over the last three years. Mexico was the last hold put, banning the practice last year. The reason why McDonald's keeps trying to sell pasta is because of Jollibee. The Filipino fast food brand is huge in Southeast Asia and Oceania, rivaling and even surpassing McDonald's in some areas. Jollibee's menu features burgers, fried chicken, palabok noodles and their famous spaghetti with Filipino-style tomato sauce. That's why McDonald's is trying to copy their success.

McDonald's probably wants pasta on their menus so bad because they can produce it for pennies and sell it for like $5+. I can't even imagine what the profit margins on that would be.
They actually used to sell spaghetti. However, it actually didn't turn up a huge profit, and so it was discontinued everywhere except the Philipines (as spaghetti is a staple dish over there), and Orlando for some reason. After all, people don't come to McDonald's for spaghetti and breadsticks, they go for burgers and fries. Plus, pasta is super easy to make at home and is fairly cheap to. You can also have leftovers for days.
It was neat that you referenced the 2004 Joe Gibbs cars. NASCAR has had a history of neat sponsorships and I reccomend taking a look into some of them.

We never got the tongs however.
@@slow_start I can't help but feel like they could easily recreate a "natural" green ketchup by using tomatilloes instead of tomatoes, much like salsa verde does. I mean, that actually *might* work as "exotic foods" are a trend now. I could see a Shrek themed "verde" ketchup selling well.
I am obsessed with the brownies from KID Cuisine. They're the best brownies on the face of the planet, and I will hurl myself off the Golden Gate Bridge if they ever stop making them.
I remember asking for the Shrek ketchup in the grocery store my mom told me no and got mad because no one wants to eat green meatloaf. My brother asked for it next trip and she got it lol.
I was watching this video and I told my grandma about the cups and she proceeded to tell me all the ones she had as she proudly showed me her collection

McDonald’s even has spaghetti in the Fillapines
I'm basically counting down the days until I can finally try Jollibee's for myself 😆😆The Halo-Halo drink looks unbelievably good!! And I want to try their chicken so bad!!
@@hotaruishere2133 I actually tried them for the first time last weekend (they opened one in my hometown last year but I never felt the drive to go there, Jesus Christ best fried chicken on the market it’s honestly between Jollibee and Wingstop for the best fast food fried chicken
@@mrcritical6751 I've been to Jollibee a few times, they've opened a few test locations near Toronto, Canada. Tbh the burgers, palabok and spaghetti are pretty mediocre. I like the aloha burger tho. But the fried chicken was really good.

A cashier at Walmart had a funny story that a woman in a rush bought a Shrek snickers which if I remember was when the 3rd movie was coming out. She started eating it and noticed it was green inside that she freaked out and thought she was eating a expired snickers.
😂
If this happened nowadays, could've been viral online pretty quickly 😂.
My dad was actually a district manager at McDonald’s during the shrek glass fiasco. Somehow he was able to get all the glasses for the promotion for free, so I remember getting them vividly. We obviously gave them all back but for some reason I thought the whole situation was hilarious.
I refuse to believe that he doesn’t have one hidden somewhere that he’ll use to kill someone someday
@@broisyougobbling Anytime he gets into an altercation he smiles remembering that at the end of day he has a Puss in Boots glass on standby back home.
My family still has all of them in our china cabinet 😂
It was for Shrek The Third. So he's mistaken.
My grandparents still have them including the troublesome puss in boots glass downstairs
I think a history of things like overdone over aggressive movie tie ins or marketing things similar to Shrek mania would be fun. Others that i think of are the 90s pokemon pokemania products... the current overuse of The minions come to mind. But it'd be fun to look at past generations of yester year too
Love these ideas! I've got lots planned for the new year so definitely keep an eye out :)
I think Garfield definitely fits with this theme even if it's not technically a movie. That orange cat was everywhere in the early 90's.
Or Frozen during the mid 2010’s
10:22 WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SAYING? I WOULD LOVE TO WORK IN SHREK EARS
9:30 If McDonald's made Sonic the Hedgehog drinking glasses. Tails would have been the deadliest because Tails is a orangish yellow two tailed fox who can fly with his two tails while Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy would have been the safe ones to drink out of. Sonic is blue, Knuckles is red, and Amy is pink.
We.all.know that
What are we supposed to do with that information?
@@helofish2148to avoid it from happening twice
The Shrek marketing went so out of control it went full circle with the onions going from trash to veggies lol
They could have made healthy veggie green shrek snacks but they didn’t
Ty
Right??? They could have had spinach or broccoli “swamp”
That’s not what kids wanted in the 2000’s
The onions are probably the closest thing lol
@@shittyglasses0_ they wouldn’t care it just had to be green
I actually think using Shrek to market onions is genius since it actually correlates with the movie.

All I see is amazing Shrek products that I need in my life.
I still have my toxic McDonald's shrek cup and one day it will be buried with me

Once I was at a function and this family gave their child green Shrek Cheetos™️ and they were panicking trying to figure out why their kids tongue was green lmao
As a diehard Shrek kid born in 2001, I’m a little embarrassed at how many of these products I actually owned. I drank that Shrek Kool Aid to the ends of the earth
Was it good?
Me and my best friend or in our late 50s and he had bought some twinkies and brought them over. I said I had not had a Twinkie and over 20 years. We open the box both got one and took a bite in the filling was Green. We start spitting it out thinking it was bad until we looked on the front of the box and read the label. We still laugh about this from time to time.
Hilarious!
I worked at McDonald's during the "glassware scare" and totally kept my puss in boots cup lol
Just don't drink anything from them! :P
@@ThePreciseClimberthey belong in the fine china cupboard that’s just for show and nobody ever touches

In german, "Schreck " means "a scare", as in "to scare" translates to "erschrecken" .. good times, we got Shrek toothpaste (Colgate I think), coming with little collectible rubber figurines ...
This is the first I've heard of this for some reason. Very cool!
Then the guy who played nosferatu was clever
These feel weird, gross and uncanny. They also make me feel uncomfortable and I don’t know why.
10:27 Good thing, when Shr3k the 💩 was being promoted, Mickey D's didn't make employees wear ogre headbands.
We had ogre hats.
Really wish I kept my ogre hat.
I really enjoy how you initially describe the shrek marketing as if we were living in a dystoian shreknostate
This video made me remember some deep ass memories of these Shrek game books I used to have, and you could like make up stories by choosing alternative words on premade stories and draw on Shrek among other things

.... as a kid, my dad got me the whole set of Shrek glasses from McDonald's lmao they magically disappeared one day too 🤣 idk when the word came out about the cups being poisonous, so idk if they disappeared cause of that or cause my mom got sick of Shrek and Fiona staring her in the face daily, mocking her
😂
My parents used to buy us the Shrek Fruit by the Foot snacks, they were green instead of red and sour and so delicious. One time when I was 4 years old I ate the whole box and threw up afterwards, it’s one of my most favorite memories lmao
Not Shrek related but I was 5 in 1994 and ate a whole box of Blue raspberry gushers and my mom had a fit lol. Thankfully it didn't make me sick. But I will never forget that. She didn't buy Gushers very much after that.
that happened to me in 3rd grade on super bowl sunday except with regular oreos cause there was no adult in the house to stop me from eating an entire package of oreos as an 8yo
I initially thought the slowed down, warped Shrek soundtrack transition gimmick would get old fast. But every time I heard the next one, I giggled a bit to myself. So I guess I deserve to be here.
Still waiting for the "BAD products"... Shrek is love
The way the politician phrases everything makes it sound like hes standing up less for the children and more for shrek...
I remember getting Shrek toothpaste and being scared of it because it was unsurprisingly green. I eventually got over my fear, though.
It was neat that you referenced the 2004 Joe Gibbs cars. NASCAR has had a history of neat sponsorships and I reccomend taking a look into some of them.

The Tom Harkin presentation about the danger of Shrek's green ogre cream to a U.S. senate hearing is probably one of the greatest things to ever happen of all time.

You've unlocked a memory for me!! I remember eating the Shrek ravioli as a kid. It just tasted like the regular beef/ cheese ravioli I'd get from the grocery store. I remember them having that starchy-sticky feeling and opening them up the filling were like these little squares. I think there was like some savoury tomato sauce as well (by Heinz btw). We never got the tongs however.
they had zoo animal shaped ones, i loved the shrek ones i can still remember the taste
For the record, the whole green pastry Twinkies was actually first started by Ghost Busters and I think Ninja Turtles in the 80s and early 90s.
I used to love the green ketchup as a kid! I also remember really liking the purple one as well. Such an odd time to be a kid
It was definitely odd... that kind of product would never fly now I don't think. Artificial colouring is an even badder word these days.
In the last 50 years? What happened 51 years ago?
I remember asking for the Shrek ketchup in the grocery store my mom told me no and got mad because no one wants to eat green meatloaf. My brother asked for it next trip and she got it lol.
I can remember begging my mom for Shrek Kids Cuisine. 😂 She caved and bought it for me & my siblings. The pudding 100% did change your tongue green.
I was watching this video and I told my grandma about the cups and she proceeded to tell me all the ones she had as she proudly showed me her collection

They also were geniuses to be able to take the most ugly and undesirable color in marketing and make it distinctively Shrek colored and erase all the previous notions of the color green
if you ask me blue food looks worse than green, have you seen the Sonic curry?
Senator Harkins, Shrek is not poisoning children. The green filling is just food coloring.
This is exactly the kinda content im looking for on yt, thanks you so much
I honestly kinda miss this type of stuff they don’t really do this shit for movies anymore plus the first shrek was a childhood favorite. Also it’s true ketchup is the last sauce I would choose I only get that if it’s the only one possible

The worst thing about the magazine is the photoshop is so bad.
