When I knew I was getting the ALPINA B4 S, I figured I needed to get hold of a M4 Competition Package & shoot a comparison test. Thankfully I managed to pull a few strings to make this test happen!

Yes, Graham and Nick did help, this was an awesome video. The visuals you all got and the comparisons etc that you and Aaron deliver were great... This was almost as good as the Petrolheads Alps movie. Praise indeed

Really enjoyed this one Joe! Was great to see these two up against each other and I'm sure they were fun on those roads too. They are so different but both aiming for the same sort of idea so is interesting to see the two takes Alpina and BMW have. Great camera work from Nick and Graham too, can really see the work that's gone into this one, keep it up!

The first video I saw of yours was you sitting in your parked car talking to a single camera about fuel economy and storage space. A couple of years later you're matching anything Chris Harris has put out, great stuff!

Jesus he was hardly thrashing it though was he? The guy had spent a lot of time and effort to do the review. By all accounts the car hadn't even been sold at the time. Imagine every owner asked for old road tests of their cars to be taken down!
James Reilly each to their own but i'd rather not have my expensive motor potentially being devalued because there is a video of it on youtube being driven enthusiastically on youtube.
Cheers James! Yeah I got the call about that M140 the morning of this test, hence being well behaved (off camera) in the M4. Moral of the story is, all demos have a hard life, that particular M140 was always warmed up and treated well compared to many others. This issue has certainly made me re think UA-cam, deleting a video that essentially took me 3 days to produce is a real kick in the guts.

The whole situation baffles me Joe, don't get it at all. As for it devaluing the car........?!?! Hope he got it at a knockdown price! Where does this leave you for future videos?
Joe Achilles - The Alpina will never be sold with that plate on anyway! B-) Don't see what all of the fuss is about. These cars are designed and built to be driven hard at times. If someone buys a second hand sports car thinking it's never been 'driven' then more fool them!

I wish we got more than just the B6 and B7 in the States.
As much as i adore the 4 series platform, i'd still rather have an M3 or an Apbina B3 S

For the money, the M4 looks a bit more special, both inside and out.

No, the m4 is just sporty which every car brand offers. No sunroof, all black exterior trim, black basic seats and interior trim. Nothing special about the M4, Alpina fixed that! B4 has individual color options in every way, comfortable daily-driving suspension, tuned and refined 440 engine not your basic M4 I6, annnd they’re made at 1/100 the pace so way more rare. B4 is more “special” but m4 is sportier for sure

No brainer for me. Same; if not more power performance, about the same money, better interior, better for everyday use, and more exclusive in the states........Alpina!
Fantastic video mate! Super interesting to see both these cars head to head, and I think i agree with all the points you have made! I probably would be one of the few young people to go for the B4S.. Great driving, cinematography and editing! ;)

Really nice video Joe, was away when you published this and the internet on the continent wouldn't let me watching in anything other than one big blur so I waited. So glad I did... Awesome video and some lovely cinematography. Interestingly I'm one of the young people who would actually pick the Alpina. Just love Alpina's, always have and I've only ever been in one, but the exclusivity they bring vs the ten a penny m4, Alpina all day!

Thans for posting this very nice video, lots of hard work to produce such nice content well done! If I may I believe when you swapped cars, the audio in the Alpina sounds like several tracks of voice are running (maybe from a couple of cameras) but it's not quite lined up so is ever so slightly delayed resulting in a slight bathroom kind of sound. Again though great video sorry if the audio thing has already been mentioned.

Very enjoyable video, up there with your epic interview with Herr Bovensiepen. I love Alpinas, although my B3 is of the E46 generation but once you acquire the taste (says he with an M140 on order - many thanks for all your videos on those Joe!)
I would very much take the Alpina over the M car in this instance. That Alpina ticks all the boxes for me, especially the colour. Great video again dude. Well done guys.

Top quality production Joe! I'd take the Alpine over the M4 any day; Love that interior too. I'd also change the colour and maybe do away with the stickers on the side, although there could be some power loss by doing that ;) Would love to be a passenger on such roads with very capable drivers like you two.

lol @ Joe- I have never heard you complain so much about not losing traction - my 2020 M4 Comp feels amazing! I think a lot of the issues with traction was the tires.

Great vid guys, just the sort of comparison a petrolhead ponders! I've always been more drawn to the Alpina brand, but with M cars available with substantial reductions, that swings it in terms of value for money for me, back to the M car

seems as if the alpina wouldn’t be much slower considering the similar hp and more torque which likely makes up for the weight difference
Hi Joe, they are both very nice cars and both do similar jobs if I had to pick it would be the Alpina version as it gets the job done but without shouting about it it's like Superman without the red pants etc. in saying that if I had the cash I would have the Alpina B7 yes you can't compare on any level but I just love the B7 it's BMW at its best with Alpina breathing on it a great video Joe very informative. Do you know if you can pick and customise the suspension, steering and throttle setting in the Alpina like you can in the M4?
Cheers Maz! You don't have quite the level of settings as the M cars, but you can adjust the suspension and steering like in regular adaptive equipped 4 series BMW's

Amazing comparison, I was waiting for long for this; I would go for the b4 s, not such a big fan of m4 edginess...
In the end over 90 % of the time you ll be in town or motorway not on track. I would choose another colour though, leave green for d3 estate.

Really great video! Nice comparison and conclusion. I'd like to see a review from you comparing the alpina vs. the alfa giulia quadrifoglio (or at least the M3/4 compared to the alpina). Can you do that? :-D

Both great cars, but now I think I like the new M3s better than the M4, almost same performance but 4 doors on the M3 and better looking in my opinion.
Excellent video and cars. If I had one car it would be the Alpina, otherwise it would be the CS. Also, you'd think they'd attach the plate on better to the Alpina :D

M4's exterior + B4's interior would be perfect

The way i see it, buying an Alpina B4 is if you want smaller bmw (not big as 5 or 7 series), with similar performance to the m4, but less sporty and more daily which is strange, cuz if you want daily car, why dont you than buy 5 series or 7 series. I just dont see what the B4 has to offer vs the M4 CP, its heavier, not as fun. It would make sence if its an SUV or 7 series. And diesels are starting to get less and less with the new environment pollution control.

I dont think so, i drove powerful V8 diesels and while it feels like a jet, its not as sporty, still sounds good, but cant compare to the petrol V8 and high revs are too fun to not have in a sport car. The only V6 i drove was Bmw X5 3,0d.

hello Joe , great vid well done! two points how do you compare the Alpina Petrol to their Diesel,secondly did you check any MPGs ?.........and on the UK roads especially in the S E it has to be Alpina all the way ( pete mayes)
Hey Pete, The M4 averaged around 21mpg for the entire two days, the B4 S managed almost 26mpg! The Petrol is faster and gives more driving pleasure, but it costs around £12k more in the UK so....
