I looked you up for this reminder. I planted Mary Washington this Spring (2020) and they did amazing! Also watched your lesson on planting them back then. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
That is really great growth for the first year!! Well done!!
God always allows for Abundance all from One Seed !!!
From one gardener to another, thank you for this video! It really helped me a lot! Keep on hammerin away!!!
great quick vid Luke good to see your channel growing !
Epic growth! I'm hopeful that my asparagus will do as well as yours this year. Just put 40 of them into raised beds. Thanks for the advice on overwintering
Ty for the help. I was going to do this, I just wanted 2 make sure it was correct. I look forward 2 more ...
Thanks Love all the info!
answered all my questions! I'm growing asparagus from 1 root in a pot on my balcony. (in Hamilton ontario zone 5? 6?)
now it's blooming, and still sending up MANY new shoots. it's stilll early, but I'll add compost in a few weeks, cover with leaves and see what happens next spring.
thanks!
Great info for the asparagus Luke, I will mulch mine with straw, I would use leaves, but If you can believe it I don't have any leaves unless I ask my neighbors if I can rake their lawns, LOL
Hi. I would like to say that I grow Mary Washington in the Deep South of Louisiana and it does amazing. This summer was BRUTAL. So not only is it cold hardy. It’s very heat tolerant as well.
great tips luke!
Thank you for this informative video.
Thanks for sharing. It's interesting because I cut my asparagus down at beginning of winter.
Excellent how to my friend ! One of these days I'll have to jam some asparagus in my garden :)
Can't wait til spring.
it took 3 days but I have just watched all MIgardener videos back to back I am tired!!!!!!!
wooooooooooooooooooh that is amazing! So cool!
Great video! Hopefully, I can get some asparagus planted next year.
Great video, a lot of good information :-)
As always, such a great, informative video! I had a single spear that was planted from root this year but a cutworm got to it at about 1/2 inch above the soil. Do you think it will come back next year? I only planted 2 plants due to space limitations.
Thank you.
Asparagus, that's a plant I need to learn more about its cultivation.
Thanks for making such a great video. I made a bed that is a little over 4 square feet around my mailbox here in North Florida back in March and everything looks good so far. I thought the heat would hurt them, but so far the asparagus looks just like your video. Some of the stalks get top heavy and fall over, just like your video. Since I live in a warmer climate, should I cut down the stalks and mulch over them in the winter? I planted 2 types of asparagus crowns, the Purple Passion and the Mary Washington.
I live in a Zone 2b area. I've been trying to grow this for a long time. Thank you for the tips! Does this also work for container asparagus plants
This is my first year with asparagus. The plants seemed to do well. I grew them in pots. My question is should I leave them in the pots, transplant them now, or transplant in the spring? I do have a greenhouse so I could keep them in there. I actually grew 2 plants in my aquaponics set up. They were by far my best performers but I can't take up the space next year in my system.
Sould I use barrier cloth before straw for winter here in WYOMING? I have a three foot high boxed bedding area. my first year grow asparagus and it all came up, hope to keep it from freezing!
Luke. how everything. what about with my sparagus box , here in PR. is summer all the time.
what I need to do. just let then grow or I have to cut them???
warms regards
Thanks Luke, it looked like you had seeds on those ferns...?
Hi! Love your videos and appreciate all the information you provide Luke!
Zone 5 Question: If you had to ward off asparagus beetle for first year growth, should you still avoid pruning in the fall ?
Or proceed with pruning in the fall, and add extra leaf/organic mulch for a good spring harvest?
I’ve gardened for a good number of years, but this is my first year ever growing asparagus (which has done very well so far, thanks to advice from your videos!) and I’d like to make sure I don’t overwinter any pesky asparagus beetles.
Thank you in advance!!
Oops!! Believe I located the answer in the video comment feed.
Answer located was, trim back, but wait til brown and dead, and still wait til early spring.
Hi folks! This is my first year, first winter, after planting 2 year asparagus crowns. The flourished this season, gave seed, and are very hearty for winter. So, question... how do I winter them? I laid the plants down and even had to lay some wood over them to keep them down! Do I cut them short? If so, how short? Help!
I too had great first year growth following the suggestions in your videos. It is now spring and I see new stalks coming up and they are thicker than a pencil. Should I remove the leaves that remain from the winter from the bed? They are quite thick. I don’t want them to inhibit sun
Soon all my asperagus will be going doment. Do I water when they are dorment? Can I cover with mulch?
Cut them when they turn yellow and cover them with compost then mulch. You could also add stone dust etc. Before the compost snd mulch.
If you have any red berries ( it's seed) then ether grow them inside and transplant latter or let them lay with the rest of the plants.
I know a man that turned 90 thiscyear and allbhescdone is burn them in fall and add leaves. Hes been getting a good yeald for 45 + years now.
I have grown my asparagus indoors since February, and I have multiple ferns in one pot in close proximity. Do I need to separate the ferns for planting in the Spring?
Can you use pet bedding to mulch the asparagus? Cedar or pine? If not what kind of mulch??
good one... Do you have the next year video?
Hi, I live in south central Alaska and have asparagus in my raised bed in my green house. This next year will be year two for them. So, usually I cover them in the fall with compost but let them grow through winter. In spring they are brown and laid over but I have never cut them back. So, should I cut them back in the spring? And do I water them through out summer off and on?
Planted asparagus for 1st time. Should I weed a bit before topping with leaves??? Do you cover the asparagus with leaves, too?? We started with roots.
I grew from seeds some purple asparagus that has died off. I have this one plant left and I don't want to lose it. It's in a pot and wondering what to do with it for winter. Should I plant it or bring it inside for winter?? Thanks for your help
💚💚💚
My asparagus (from seed) is tiny. About 6/8” and ina two foot long container…they are green now late October and I’ve put them into my garden shed which has a partial clear plastic roof.. I’m in the PNW Olympic peninsula. Should I leave them in or put them back outside… they were in the front yard patio as it had the best sun. I’m just afraid they would be to cold on the concrete and in the plastic planter they are in…got any advise ???
Ok will I need to cover them in case of frost or just let them be?
Try growing purple asparagus
Hi fantastic
Thanks for the reminder, Luke! I need to get out there and mulch my asparagus bed with leaves. Fortunately, we have plenty! ;-)
What do you do with the seeds
What about farther south , I live in southwest VA at 2500 ft. zone 6 . We get very little snow and what we do get melts off but we do get spell's of very cold weather ( below 0 for a few day's or a week at a time ) should I just put down some compost and mulch with straw ?
Yes
Is asparagus a variety of fern or is that just what you call the stalks?
Asparagus becomes a fern when it gets to mature :) In its younger form when it first emerges, it is what you see in the stores.
I planted asparagus seeds in a raised bed in Nairobi, Kenya. We do not have winters with snow. How will that affect their growth? Each plant has about four or more fern stalks and a couple already have asparagus stems. Did you say in another video not to cut for a full year? Thanks for any tips you could suggest.
Hi Luke, I did it the same way and covered my asparagus with leaves last Oktober. Now my question, do you let the leaves on the bed in springtime or do you remove it?Greatings from Germany
+Rosa Akelei Leave the leaves on till spring melts, then uncover just around the asparagus and leave the rest to break down and feed the plants.
OK, thanks for the advice.
Bless you.
I am in So Calif and am getting a lot of what looks like rust on my ferns. Is this normal?.They are 2 year old plants. I am worried its a disease maybe caused by top watering or not enough water. Does it mean its time to cut back the ferns that have turned rusty looking?...
can i split this plant to make more?
🌿🌱🍁🍂 Thank you for the info. Much appreciated! 🪷💮🍁🍂
Hi Luke, not sure if you still read comments from videos this "old". I have a question about over wintering asparagus. I have a bed of asparagus; Mary Washington, year 2. Bought the seeds from your website :-) I Have been watching several videos that recommend cutting back anywhere from all the way to the ground, to 2" above ground and adding a layer of mulch to protect them. Reasoning was to stop asparagus beetles from overwintering. You have the only video that recommended not cutting back. I am very confused and wonder if you have any insight into this? I also live in the north/great lakes. Buffalo area.
Same question: Mary Washington plants, year two, northern Illinois. I think I will cut them back now that the tops have fully yellowed and then mulch with leaves, of which I have plenty. Luke, if you see this I'd love to hear your opinion.
I’m barely in Zone 6a here in West Michigan. It’s almost mid September and I just got asparagus seeds from a friend, can I plant them in a super large plastic pot now or should I wait for early Spring?
I Winter Sowed my asparagus seeds last year in milk/water jugs & they sprouted great.
I understand about not cutting down while green, but I heard to cut back to two inches when brown and then remove a good distance to a compost pile as asparagus beetles will over winter on the plant. Is this true?
+Judith Pyle once the plant is dead and brown yes you can remove some. Just wait until spring very early spring to do that.
Get the dead stuff out of there. Its that simple. Burn it is best.
Are these asparagus of the Washington's (female types) or Jersey's (male types)?
What if you don't have snow, like in southern AZ? Is it ok to cut back the ferns?
+Eric Jungbluth Cut back all but 1 fern. never cut them all.
Cool. Thanks for the reply!
If I don't prune my collards down will they survive same as asparagus ? (They are biennial ).
limesquared They should. Mine ave died, but in a warmer climate they very well could survive.
Thanks for the tips mate in what is a great short video clip! Where the hell is that accent of yours from? Sound like a mish mash of American, Irish and Scots to me.
+Michael Ball lol, it is 100% american... I didn't now I had an accent lol.
i must be missing something. my 6 mary washingtons, i stuck in a bin when i bought them, just to keep alive. each has multiple ferns, but they each also have a really thin asparagus which is definitely not a fern, but looks like a miniature asparagus stalk. i thought ferns were just the vehicle for feeding the asparagus.
Those tiny little stalks will turn into the fern plant if you let it. Harvesting starts to happen when the stalks are thick before it gets a chance to fern out
Hey Mark, did you watch this?
Yes
how much sun do they need?
all of it
I realize this is an older video, but aren’t you afraid of asparagus beetles nesting in the ferns under the snow?
I pruned mine when it got cold and covered with leaves. Hope I didn't screw them up.
Smy God everything you said could have been said in 30 seconds
Good way to confuse the new grower. CUT THEM BACK. Ive been raising massive amounts of robust plants for 30 YEARS from the same bed!!
My plants are 6' tall when leafed out. I cut them back each fall and cover the whole bed.with a thick layer of fresh seaweed.
No messing around in the spring with cutting and stuff. Seaweed is a mulch and fertilizer all in one. NO BUGS EVER.
So you made a long winded video to supposedly save a lot of writing. Yet the only real take away from video was don't trim asparagus.
