I have had mine for 51 years and it's still doing great. Pick it every year. Thanks for a great video.
I am asking if the asparagus crowns that I bought last year at the end of the year that I did not plant, are still going to be good if I plant them this spring?
@@jeffdinter600 it’s hard to say. Give it a try!
WOW, that sounds so beautiful! I'm praying and planting my asparagus and rhubarb are legacy plants for my family.😍
@@jeffdinter600 me too. Migardener?
Wow
Gardener Scott pro tip: Dig the whole, then make a mound in the middle for the crown to sit on. Then u splay the roots out down and around.
I have already harvested about 4 pounds of asparagus from my 2 yrs crowns I planted last year I bought from MIgarderner here in Alabama. They are growing like crazy still. I also soaked my roots for 20 minutes before planting.
Perfect timing ...we just rec'd your asparagus and am planting tomorrow...We love your channel and your store...thanks for helping us get a good start.
I received my strawberry roots from you and I’m getting ready to plant them! Thanks for the informational video Luke 🧤🌱🪴 I watched your older tutorial on asparagus last year, planted asparagus last year and they did awesome.
Perfect. I just received two packages of asparagus crowns, Jersey supreme and purple passion. I'm going to plant them along the edge of my woodchip garden growing up like a edible fern hedge
That was Great information! Glad you mentioned about burying the crown. Thank you Luke!💜
I've never grown asparagus but maybe somewhere down the road.
Luke,I will be eating from asparagus that I seeded years ago from seeds you sold me from the lake house.
Perfect timing! Waiting on my 2 year old roots to arrive anytime!
Some day I want to grow asparagus. Now I know how. I loved to pick off the sprouts and eat them raw in a family member's garden. Yum! Thank you very much.
Thank you for the video, I'm in Quebec zone 4b, I've ordered my asparagus roots , waiting for them to come.I'm excited to get planting.we still have snow though.
This was awesome. Excited to follow along.
Can you do a video showing growing and planting asparagus from seed? I know I have several more weeks before planting out but it would be good to know what else I need to be concerned with.
Gulp. I didn't see this video had been uploaded till after I planted mine yesterday. Haven't watched it yet, but hope there wasn't any make-or-break information... I did watch a couple of your other asparagus videos and followed the soaking recommendations in the email, so hoping all will be well. Thanks, Luke.
Thanks for the advice on when to harvest with the thickness the 2nd year!!! I've been looking everywhere for some answer other than no or yes but they don't explain the "pencil" measurement so thanks again! Yea to gardening and most of all to the harvest!!!
Thank goodness for your videos. I can’t believe I did everything wrong yesterday. I am embarrassed to say it but here goes. I planted them in rich dark soil, small hole using a bulb digger and the kicker, I planted them upside down thinking the roots were actually the asparagus stocks and let the “roots” exposed above the ground about an inch.😂😂😂😂. Today I dug them up after watching your video. When will I learn to watch your videos first. You explain everything so well. Thank you!
Thanks, Luke. I ordered asparagus crowns from your store and spent hours searching the web for how to plant them properly. Your explanation is the clearest. While I'm waiting for the crowns to arrive, I'll be prepping my soil. Didn't know about the play sand. Terrific tip. Willing to wait 1-2 years for harvest.
How is your asparagus harvest?
@@wendycrew1177 This is the third year (2023) and I will be harvesting this year. Looking forward to a good year.
I just planted the crowns I purchased from MIgardener about 10 min before you posted this video.
Cant wait for my asparagus crowns to arrive. Thank you, Luke. I purchased strawberries too. So excited to start growing food again. 🌻💕🌻💕
Hey! My 11 plants from last year flourished, 1 of them didn't make it. I plan on getting another 20 - 2 yr old roots. Thanks for the vid Luke.
That was exactly the information that I needed. Thank you!
Luke!! My Trifecta order arrived today! Thank you so much! Very quick order turnover!!! 👍👍👍
I love bare root season, got strawberries and asparagus
Hah same I just got a new property and I've bought more bare root plants than ever, asparagus, strawberry, rhubarb, echinacea fruiting trees, bushes and berries I'm going all out!
I tried to plant asparagus last year and failed miserably. This year I decided to try again, and bought some from you. This video came out the week I need toplant them and I realized I had pretty much made every mistake last year. This year I followed your tips and have a bunch of sucessful babies!!!! Yay!!! Can't wait to eat them in a year or 2!
Any videos about artichokes? 😊🪴
Thank you
Just planted some today! Thanks!
I live in Puerto Rico I saw them in HomeDepot. The weather here is cool breezy 80F. At night it gets low 68F. It’s considered Spring here. During the day it’s breezy cool but sunny. My tomatoes and Peppers are doing well.
I love how you always have a smile on your face
Because gardening is his craft❣️
I just purchased a bare root vegetables selection 2 asparsgus , 1 rhubarb strawberries And 6 potato startes
This is what I needed!
Thankyou for another great video mate :)
thanks for the information, luke! the plants i bought from you last year should be growing soon.. lol!
didn't know about the 2" deep crown, thanks!! bet I get more asparagus now!! thanks to you!!
Thank you! 💚🌞
Make sure you link your monster asparagus video in the description and icard so it recommends the video
Thank you for the update!
Great video would soaking them for a bit help prior to planting?
Question: We have some crowns we bought last year and didn’t get them planted. Would they still be ok to plant?
Also, I’ve heard you should soak your crowns in water a little while before planting. Should this be done?
How long will crowns/roots last in the refrigerator before planting? I ordered too many and my grow space isn't ready. I didn't know you sold them and will definitely buy from you next time!
What should I do if I’ve got bareroot asparagus but it’s already hot outside? Should I plant into pots inside so it “wakes up” more slowly?
Im expecting bare root asparagus any day, what timing lol.
If I plan on moving in the next year or so, can I plant in 15gal grow bags ?
I love this video. I thought I planted them wrong last year but I did what you said perhaps they will pop up this year 🙏 The only problem is that I didn't amend the soil. Maybe it will work. I will definitely try more 💕
Could you soak the roots in water prior to planting?
You talked about it having to be very cold when you plant them. I am in zone 10b and just received my asparagus roots. It has started to warm up, and while we might get a little frost this month, by march there will be no more frost. Will I have to do something differently?
QUESTION: do you plant a foot apart from each crown or a foot apart from the spread of the roots?
Roots i believe.
Wow pretty sure I killed my crowns. I did everything wrong. Think I should just order more crowns, if I can get them! Great video, thanks!
Question: Don't harvest the first, and maybe the second year. Do you just let the plant go and do nothing? Or, is there a pruning process?
Great question 🤔
No pruning. Let them grow to full size (mine are six feet of ferny fronds) and the tops die every winter, at which point I shred the dried up material and throw it back over the crowns as a winter blanket.
I was told no harvesting the first year, 1 asparagus the second year, about a handful the third year and from the fourth year on harvest as much as you can until the turn of the sun on the 21st of june.
You're the best!
Hey I planted my first second year asparagus roots (martha washington) this year and I am getting green shoots. We may have some more cold weather should I worry. I covered them in my raised bed with straw.
Thank you for the good info.
Loved your video. Definitely subscribed.
Question will deer eat the asparagus?
Wondering if I can plant outside a fenced area.
I know why take the chance.
Great tips in this video ! I have established asparagus in my garden in an area which has been invaded by quack grass. Any recommendations as to how I should go about relocating them to another area which is free of the quack grass ? They are till dormant here in Wisconsin, soil is now thawed.
Do you let the asparagus flower? Or do you trim it? I picked a few spears then the asparagus he bigger and had bunch of flowers on them
Hi Luke,
I’m planting my bare root Asparagus plants as well as seed starts in grow bags this year with the intentions that my wife and I are moving to our Dream Forever Home next year. I wanted to give some of my perennial vegetables and Fruit trees a year or 2 head starts.
Is it ok to plant with closer spacing with the grow bags? I didn’t watch this video last week when I planted a bag of asparagus and I left the crowns exposed… going out now to cover them and hope for the best…
Planted my bare root asparagus yesterday following episode suggestions. Noticed this morning soil rock hard from temperature at 28 degrees. Wondering if this will kill off the asparagus?
I bought 20 bare roots from your store on Tuesday and planned on planting them today after my bed is built and prepared. Sadly, they broke dormancy yesterday. What do I do?
I thought asparagus needed lots of moisture as its often found along irrigation ditches
I understand not too harvest the first year or to but do I need to chop the stalks down at the end of the growing season or just let them die off through the winter,,, it'll be my first year doing bare root asparagus
Debating on seed or bare root... this should help a lot in deciding...
Oh that's good to know! I didn't know you treated asparagus crowns differently than strawberries! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!
hi Luke I have a question. A few years ago I bought three bare root asparagus And I didn’t know a lot about gardening and so I just looked up how to care for it and then tell me what kind of soil they liked and everything but after watching your video I’m pretty sure I buried them too deep because they were definitely a little deeper than 2 inches below the soil and after watching your videos for the past year and binge watching your older videos I’m pretty sure that cat litter containers are not suitable containers to grow edibles in....I know I know.... The variety I bought were jersey giants in the first year that I planted them they had harvestable asparagus coming up that were the size of a dime and a penny and some super skinny ones to from the same plant and I thought that was kind of weird. Once it was done harvesting I ended up letting the rest of them grow and go to flour and stuff like that and the next year they didn’t really come back very strong because they never produced another harvestable crop sure I didn’t even get any and so I thought they were dead until two plants produced one tiny skinny asparagus that immediately went to flower so clearly not dead. So my question is should I leave them where they’re at now in that same container and just start amending the soil or should I dig them up and transplant them somewhere else? The type of soil I have is very beach like and I have free range chickens and ducks there’s a lot of organic matter always been added to the soil or should I put them in a different container?
I tried to grow asparagus in my community garden twice. The first year I let it grow without harvesting. The second year somebody dug up and stole my roots. The next year I tried again, but somebody sprayed it with weed killer in the fall because it was bushing out into the common path. I gave up.
Can you please make a video about planting asparagus that you start from seed
Thank you😮
Im in montreal the crowns ii bought i think they are from last year... should i put them in a pot for now and transplant in a month... soil still frozen...
When can i plant? June here now. Almost have my raised bed ready. Thanks!
Do I just leave the first year’s growth alone or do I ever cut it?
Great instructions, thanks! May I know the ratio between your garden soil (pure compost as you entioned?) and the sand? Looking forward to your reply anxiously. Much appreciated!
should you soak the bare roots before planting? i know some bare root plants need that. d. casey from MO love your videos
Will asparagus do well in a container garden? I have limited grow space.
I would love to know this as well!
What if your one yr roots have already come up and got bit by a heavy frost?? What can I do?
So if we buy crowns from you we can harvest a tiny bit the year after?
can crowns be dug up and replanted in mid fall? Southern Ontario
What if you can't put them right away? What do you do with them?
We will see what's comes up.
how do you keep weeds from taking over?
Should asparagus be in its own bed? I bought crowns this year and not sure where to put them 😅 if they should have a dedicated space or can they be with other plants and do well
Good Question Ma'am. 🤠🖖
Strawberries are companions
Hello Mr gardener. I have or I ordered two year old crowns from a person. I received them. And then I soaked them for an hr before I planted them. I think I did like three weeks ago. How long before they would possibly break being dormant and start to grow and then how long do I let them get before I harvest them ty
It's like 90 degress here.. is that too hot
Hello brother
I ordered asparagus bare root and I received it but i live in KUWAIT
Which is a very very very hot country in summer, can i put my roots in the fridge? For like a couple of months!????
I just planted my asparagus crowns, my first, do I water once a week, once every other day?🤷🏼♀️
I have some plants that I planted about 15 years ago. Instructions called for planting them 2' deep. I get asparagus every year. i planted 10 plants in a raised bed last year about 1' deep, they came up last year. i will wait until year 3 to harvest. i don't think that the planting depth is real critical.
I'm in zone 10b, is it too late to plant this season?
Do you use weed paper in your raised beds bottom or top? What do you do for weed prevention.
I ordered a three year old bare root . My question is : do I need to prune the female shoots down or just let it all grow
please let me know if i should fertilze my fruit trees now or next month??
To anyone . Its mid October here in Central Ontario zone5b, is it ok to plant Asparagus crowns now or should I wait until Spring? Thank you.
Good video however I noticed ..you dont seem to answer anyone's questions ..im sure your busy but many of the questions are similar.
If the asparagus lasts 40+ years and the raised bed lasts around 5 years how does that work?
I bought some asparagus crowns at the end of the growing season last year that were clearanced. Are they still good to plant now?
Help.. I messed up. New gardener here and I buried the root ball not the roots a day ago, am I too late to correct my mistake ?
Used to have it in my backyard when our children were babies. Went to grow it last year and they disappeared. Well I found them. They are bare root in a bag bought at Lowe's. It's two years old now, should I still try our are they lost?
Just received my crown and will be planting them shortly. It will be hard to wait two years 🤦🏻♀️
I wonder if the soil that's in the garden we use is safe to plant on top of.
What if you purchase your bare root plants in the fall, can you plant them in the fall? Like right now?
Great info! What if I missed the boat - can I still still plant them mid May in New England z6 even if not ideal? Or will they just die :(
I don't have a place prepared for them this year...could I put them in pots now
then transplant early next spring while they are dormant?
Definitely get them in some soil at least.
No trench needed hey?
Can I be honest? I don’t think I’ll ever grow asparagus. I can’t even seem to handle leeks and they seem to be kinda similar in their requirements. I’m pretty sure I’m going to fail in my glove onions this year too. 😭
But I appreciate the video anyway. Sigh.
Glove = globe. Ugh, thanks Siri. 🙄
