"Anything worth doing is worth doing badly" speaks so much to me. I'm in the middle of making a series here on UA-cam explaining the basics of Austrian economics, while I'm still only an economics student. After so much deliberating and indecisiveness I just puffed out my chest and said "Why the hell not? If I'm wrong people will tell me, and then I'll learn how to be right". And boy I can be wrong, but if you stumble enough times your balance becomes better than it ever could've been otherwise
Love your videos brother ❤ stay safe and keep up the good work. Can't wait for your next upload. And nah your balance is on point, you're right in your ideas 💡 but you have a good humble attitude as well and that's always good for a growth mindset👍 love NZ
As a 23 year old college graduate wondering what direction to head into in life, this was fantastic and relatable advice. Thank you to Tom Woods and the wonderful people at the Mises Institute for the work they do.
"As a 23 year old college graduate wondering what direction to head into in life." As if we're gonna have that choice. If Americans do not stand up to the tyranny we're witnessing, that choice won't exist.
It’s great, Thomas, the saying about doing something badly. My stepdad who is a wonderful person, started a truckstop. When he started this back in the 60s everybody told him don’t do it the economy is bad , this isn’t the time to do it , it’s not going to succeed. And his mentality was business always has its ups and downs so if I can make this business work well or at least survive in the downs I’ll be ahead of the game and I will have learned a lot of valuable lessons. He turned it into a 40 year plus successful business that allowed him to become a very generous millionaire. His son sold the business for $30 million a few years ago. It’s exactly the point get out do it now and strike while the iron is hot and you have the inspiration.
This was great to hear. I definitely needed the advice about arguing or being righteously correct about everything. I've noticed that and have been trying for a long time to fix it. It's too easy to fight meaninglessly.
My brain never turns off. I always ask questions. I started making vision boards, collages...and that helped a little. There is just no receptacle available for my thinks.
@@TomWoodsTV I'm glad to hear that, turning on an economics program and seeing a famous economist talking about fishing would be kind of weird though. It would be like my doctor wanting to discuss safe driving habits with me. Kudos for hammering out a topic you felt passionate about, hope you continue to do well in life. If you have anything on your mind about fishing btw, I actually could use some tips.
The NAP simply tells us how to not be evil, not how to be good or great. In "The Ethics of Liberty," Rothbard makes it quite clear that he is searching for a "minimal," or above all else, consistent, ethics. That is the NAP ... however, the NAP cannot apply to all areas of life. Godel has taught us that any theory which is sufficiently powerful to decide the truth of every statement (in a sufficiently powerful language) is inconsistent. The NAP then, *cannot* be applied in every situation if it is to remain consistent. The problem is that we are asked to make choices in every moment of our lives, and these choices have (at least potentially) moral consequences. We may strive to have some kind of consistency, but it's unlikely that we can achieve it. We *can*, however, achieve consistency on a subset of decisions where the NAP applies.
Interesting proposition: ‘Listen to every Tom Woods show’ which, presumably would be many, and then seee if his advice-not holding grudge- is practical. If this packaged presentation any example at all, then such a task would be valid test of resentment-stifling. Anyone out there having done so, please don’t keep it hid. Aloha...
@2:13 All Woods has to do is shave and get a pair of horn rimmed glasses and, HE'S ROTHBARD!!!! Maybe spend a little time in NYC and pick up an accent? IMHO
Have some fun, not, and within the generally pretty good points made to these undergrads, count the number of first-person pronoun usages. Gives extra purpose to the talk and serves to remind restraint.
My dear Michael, the event is called "An Evening with Tom Woods," and I was sharing stories from my life that illustrate general principles. If you are aware of some other pronoun with which I can do that next time -- perhaps you would have been happier had I used the third person? -- I am all ears. Otherwise, try to be happy, OK?
I was point out that this whole talk screamed Micheal Malice from point 1 (The exact words Malice uses when he blocks people who explain things to midwits on Twitter) and then later on he ends up admitting one of the other points was from Malice and talks about him a couple more times.
Rothbard defended southern segregationists. He wrote a lot and is interesting, but he didn't have nearly the same impact on the world as Milton Friedman or Ayn Rand. Also he defended Cuban communists.
I AM THE ANTI-ROTHBARD CULT!!! I am quite entertained by te guy, but I think he is full of baloney about 30% of the time. He was a mover and a shaker. AND I am SMH!!! IMHO

This was so necessary to hear. It’s easy to spiral into pessimism as a libertarian.

Really enjoyed the personal stories-some if them had me in stitches. Thank you for sharing.

Possibly the bravest talk on UA-cam.. 🙌
Tom gives another great chat. It’s really easy to be negative during these dystopian times.
Long time listener and one time guest here. Great talk and much appreciated, especially in the middle of Rona central. Thanks and kudos.

A contract's a contract.
Nathan Brady imagine the interest on that 15 dollars

I was about to say that Tom looks like a King sitting in that chair. But then he told that story…
"Dear Reader" absolute genius.
Some country music is fantastic and American AF. Its like listening to a history lesson. Brion McClanahan would likely agree.
Country music violates the NAP

Great fireside chat and wonderful advice for this generation 👏
I enjoyed listening to this. 🙂
Hope to meet this guy someday, and shake his hand! 😄
Tom Woods never struck me as an expert on happiness.
Well, a guy who has a career he loves and children he cherishes has this funny way of being happy

But for Covid I wouldn’t have found Tom Woods, or be retired from my 27 year business I loved Covid, that gift that keeps giving.
I wish I'd had these pieces of advice when I was a kid. It would have been a lot easier than learning them from experience.
Story time with uncle woods
I've rarely laughed so hard. Bravo!

This is how Libertarians should persuade others by telling stories. Stories will stick with people.
I read the word “librarian”, so I brushed up on Dewey decimal system jokes from 1972....🤷♂️
Pretty funny college stories!
I need to make a gif of Tom doing the spin motion with his finger.
Everything worth doing is worth doing badly
I wonder how many more people clicked this video because he put (or anyone) in the title? Hehe

The fact that you're here and know Rothbard's name proves he had an impact at least as large as Friedman and Rand.
At least he wasn’t a positivist dummy like Milton Friedman.
