SONY FX30 + Sony 24-70. Liking the camera more every day!

- My fondness for this camera continues to grow with each use. I made this video while we were on the train, it was so easy... you just ride the train, drink your coffee, look out the window and enjoy the ride while the Sony fx30 is lying next to you. and now you see the moment that you like, 4 seconds and you are already filming. so fast, so easy... I really like bmpcc 4k but I wouldn't be able to shoot this video on bmpcc, I wouldn't have had time to catch these moments and stabilize the camera. sony fx30 is like wings for me now, it gives me a feeling of freedom. despite the lack of braw, I don't think the image is that bad. I will try to shoot a short film on sony fx30. let's see what comes of it.

I look at this video and I think about all the camera youtubers who’ve complained this camera is bad in low-light…and then I remember most reviewers on youtube have very little clue how to actually film something. Its all specs and zooming into frames to find flaws.
This was a great reminder of what filmmaking is about, creating and sharing ART

Because I know how good your framing and aesthetic eye is for composition. I much prefer your BM4K style of shooting... To me it was like a breath of fresh air in comparison to the plethora of Sony fanboy videos that are all over UA-cam these days!... I hope you don't completely abandon that slower and more emotive style!
Just imagine if/when he gets adapters for his Helios or other manual focus lenses. Then he will get the best of both worlds, except braw.

Amazing color grading as always. Great storytelling as well.
I've never used a FX30 or other Sony hybrid cam, but this camera and lens combination offers a lot of convenience over the P4K. Stabilization, good high ISO performance, very fast and accurate AF with tracking, and small but good codecs. You wont' get the same amount of grading potential, but as long as you get it close in camera, it should be easy to grade. I feel this way when I shoot with the Panasonic G9 and S5. As long as you use 10bit 422 codecs and a flat/log profile, you can do almost anything with them, and they are so convenient.

Great stuff, beautiful as always. I've similarly developed a fondness for the flexibility of my LUMIX S5 over my BMPCC 4K for similar reasons, at least on trips like this.

Thanks for sharing your thought on this camera, but if i may... i found thoses images less " cinematic" than what you usualy do with your bmpcc. And be sure i'm a fan of your image look from years. i like the form factor of small cameras like this one and totaly understand the easy way to operate and shoot...but each time i look at Sony images i found it to sharp ...

thanks for the post. I enjoyed your paragraph. I guess a lot of us filmmakers are in the same position as you in terms of weighing our options and thinking of bmpcc4k and 6k vs this. I will go with this one thanks to you. a lot more user friendly and compact., my gimbal couldn't even stabilize the heavy bmpcc

I realy like the Cinematic Look of the Blackmagic Camera. Sony Images look like Hollywood, while Blackmagic looks like a high quality kind of oldschool tarantino movie.

Great! thanks :) with the choice of a new camera is always some kind of torment haha. whatever you choose will be right. if color grading is your passion then bmpcc 6k pro . if you want to shoot quality interviews then bmpcc 6k pro. if you want to shoot spontaneously and everything from home video to short film then sony fx30. I'm just that type. I want to shoot everything and spontaneously. I like it if my camera is always with me and ready to shoot at any moment.
@@RomanHense thanks a lot for the advice. I use nd filters so often that the BMPCC 6k pro with the built in ones would make sense. On the other hand, I like the occasional AF. But then I also prefer ProRes and braw. So many things to consider….. Both have their pro’s and con’s. I don’t know, I may rent both and try them out.

The only thing that throws me off of this video is that the woman seems sad, or that she´s not having a good time, and that´s when those clips of the sad and tired woman doesn´t match the uplifting music. the right choice of the clips when it comes to editing is key, visually is perfect.

I shared my raw shots and screenshots on my patreon when shooting on bmpcc 4k and will most likely continue to do so with Sony footage.

Looks great overall, but i dont like the high shutter speed on some of the shoots.
Very often I heard this saying: A good videographer makes beautiful videos with any video camera. Even with a simple phone. Looks like that myth has just been busted. Do not get me wrong. You are very good at what you do. I don't think you need a lot of time to learn to use this video camera. This last clip posted by you is ok, very nicely created, but............... unfortunately MAGIC is missing. Just as a craftsman needs a quality material to create his work of art. Likewise, a videographer needs the necessary tools to create emotions, joy, Magic. I'm not asking you to go back to BM, I'm just telling you what I see. And I'm not the only person. I am curious if you will be able to revive the magic with sony.
I tried to shoot on my phone but no matter how hard I try these shots cannot be compared with bmpcc 4k. but at the same time I saw amazing shots taken on the phone. perhaps each artist has his own suitable brushes, one draws well with wide others with thin ones, and some even with fingers. I'm still looking for my tool... I really like bmpcc 4k but after 3 years I want a bit more variety.
Absolutely, Roman. With BM 4K extremely difficult to travel and make shots on the go. But if you have controlled environment, all the shots just beautiful! I’m your big fan👍🏻

yes, this camera is well suited for all cases, except for the sony fx30, take a closer look at the lumix s5 mark2, here in the comments they say this is a good camera.
Hey, maybe you can share your insights, how you are adjusting slog-3 when filming ? Or you overexpose it to +1,7 or other parameters ? Because, often even when over exposing my footage i get lots of noise in darks.. Usualy my settings is iso 800 and +1,7ev and aperture accordingly 1.4 to 5,6 but often as said, i get noise in darks.. any insights?

What aperture were you mostly on for the low light scenes? And did you mostly use 800 iso?

Great stuff and inspiring! I am also considering switching to an FX30 from a sony A7III. I just find it hard to decide on the lens lol. Did you play by any chance with the tamron 17-70mm f 2.8 on the FX30? I am considering that lens as my choice.
Thanks! I heard the opinion that the larger the zoom, the worse the quality of the lens. so if you want such a mega versatile lens then it should be a premium class. this Tamron costs 699€, I doubt it a bit.

Missing Blackmagic look. Another thing is the Ibis or Is were drifting and this is totally anti-cinematic. I recommend turning off the Ibis to avoid this horrible ibis drift. Despite all of this, amazing video like always. Chrees Roman!

Do you sell Luts for slog 3 friend and which one would it be?
New fx30 owner and do wildlife. I’d so love to get away from S-log and go to PP11 S-cinetone. I’ve been searching for a good Lut/Luts for this pp11. What would you recommend from your Luts? #23 looks awesome! I use DaVinci so not sure if that’s a negative for me. BTW, total newbie to video
I don't even think about using slog yet. I like pp11 combined with LUT -23 (my favorite lut in this pack is 4). It works in Davinci too. 🙂

I never shoot slowmo at night. In general there is more grain in this camera than any other I have used but since I am not a fan of smooth images I still like this camera.

this camera gives a fairly sharp image, with such lenses at f4 it will be even sharper. I use old vintage lenses and sony 24-70 f2.8

As always very inspiring, however I miss the rhythm and color of your videos made with the BM, I think that the ease of use of Sony cameras makes us lose tone and patience to try to obtain an excelent narrative experience (I'm not saying that be your case). The enthusiasm for Sony lasts 60 days :) Great cameras, all-terrain, for any scenario... but sacrificing the essence of what we enjoy the most. Those of us who enjoy editing, framing and pacing... always come back to BM. And I'm sure you will too, even if you resist for now :) Without a doubt, the Sony is a great camera... for other things.
Thank you! :) I agree with everything said! I didn't give up bmpcc 4k, I just needed an additional camera with autofocus and stabilizer and now it's just interesting to get to know the sony fx30 better.

you could color grade a bag full of garbage and it would look amazing. I see it in your footage and I had it in mine before I sold the FX30, Its that jittery pan or maybe its the motion cadence, is hard to see past. do you notice the same? I have the fx3 btw.

Not as beautiful as the BMPCC4K's footage but very nice nonetheless, I am sure the FX30 is way easier to shoot with because of size and autofocus.

I think so.. I didn't sell my bmpcc, but for now I only shoot with sony, maybe it's just an interest in a new camera. let's see how it goes

Мне показалась даже лучше. У бм с исо выше 3200 уже красные полосы появляются, картинка испорчена. А на сони просто зерна больше, можно использовать. Но это так пока по ощущениям. Специальных тестов не делал.
The 24-70 sounds painful.... 36-105mm sounds not too convenient to use

@@RomanHense on full frame or with a speedbooster to be at least anywhere around 24-70mm for sure, its great but with APS-C crop its pretty bad (not wide at all)

Sonys green horrible color is very visible n the footage.. it’s nowhere near your bmpcc footages
somewhere I was impressed by the green color and perhaps went too far with it. but bmpcc 4k shots are of course different, I don't argue...
@@RomanHense your grading is source of inspiration to me but I felt like this was little sonyish grading.. I own Sony A1, the color science of A1 is beautiful and very different from a7s3 or fx3… most of the Sony camera has this greenish tint, I had a7s3 before, it had that greenish thing too

how did you avoid the noise? I also have fx30, but I can’t understand why the picture is very noisy even on a bright day?
