Castlevania 4 to me was a masterpiece. The music, the graphics. Being able to whip in all directions. Was so good.
Wish the difficulty was cranked up more... I just found it way too easy.
@@Schush yeah, it's a bit easier than 1 or 3, but was way better in my opinion on gameplay, and graphics. Less cheap deaths. Music was insane for both. Super mario world was pretty easy as well, but was exceptional.
It's one of the early SNES games I have the fondest memories of. I was surprised at the time when future entries didn't follow the same style.
@@_NoDrinkTheBleach 100%. I'm not sure why they didn't keep it so you can whip in any direction. Was such a fantastic addition
Ita solid. I feel theyvplayed it safe
Rock n’ Roll Racing needs to be on that list somewhere.
Pat missed out on SNES. You can tell.
He doesn't play games. Only reviews them
Yeah. It's why he relies on idiots like Abramson. Journalist, my ass.
Super metroid as #1...I'm not mad at it. One of the best games ever.
Maybe top 10. Definitely not #1. Still a fantastic game, though.
The last battle with Mother Brain blew my mind back in the day, the music, the sound effects, everything… so good
@@animalhouse8849 I can see SMW, SM, LTTP, CT, FF3, alternate between #1 depending on who you ask
@@realpoopypants this is what I love about the retro community...there really isn't a consensus #1 and the snes had so many good games that could be #1
Super Metroid is so good. It spawned a genre of gaming, that is still loved to this day…
PilotWings has always been my favorite SNES game. Playing the environments throughout the entire game in Mode 7 in all of its scaling & rotation glory at your pace. It blew me away then and still does to this day, simply an amazing game showing you the special abilities of the SNES
To me it was more of a tech demo, was really unique and did a lot of things we had never seen before though.
It's very high on my list. The vibe of that game is unbeatable. I never had it as a kid so I can't even just dismiss it as nostalgia...it's just so chill and relaxing despite being a challenging game.
It's actually crazy that it was a launch title too
I couldn’t agree more! Pilotwings is probably the most underrated snes game, imo. It is still super replayable and I just love the music in the game.
Secret of Mana is not a Zelda clone
They dont play games
Came here to say this
@@benjaminyoung9694 don’t remember pats boomer rant on games using both analog sticks? Bruhhhh
Super Mario World should be Number 1. Not just on the SNES, but possibly across all consoles.
Tetris Attack at 25.... I'M OUT! Leaps out the window!
My favorite game of all time is Super Metroid. Glad to see it take the top spot.
A Link to the Past is my favorite SNES game its possibly the best 16bit game of all time. Here is my top 20 SNES games
1 Zelda A Link to the Past
2 F-Zero
3 Castlevania 4
4 Super Metroid
5 Super Ghouls and Ghosts
6 Super Mario World
7 Earth Worm Jim
8 TMNT Turtles in Time
9 Mario Kart
10 DKC
11 DKC 2
12 Earth Worm Jim 2
13 Pilot Wings
14 Jurassic Park
15 Lion King
16 Aladdin
17 The Jungle Book
18 Earth Bound
19 Mortal Kombat 2
20 Contra 3
Honorable mentions Mega Man X, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, Space Invaders, F-Zero 2, Clay Fighters, Killer Instinct, Super Star Wars, Doom, and Yoshis Island, Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Punch Out.
I probably forgot a few honorable mentions since I'm going off memory.
NBA Jam TE is one of my favorites on SNES, and just one of many solid arcade sports experiences from Midway. Chrono Trigger really deserves its spot, I found it more engaging than FF games of the time (back then, I found random battle encounters really annoying), and the time travel elements were just icing on the cake.
Any particular reason you choose TE over vanilla NBA Jam? I played both back to back with my friend the other night and there's just enough I like more about the original that TE will probably never come out of my drawer again, but I'd be curious what would make it rate higher in your book.
For me #1 is Mega Man X. That game is practically perfect. Gorgeous sprites, a banging soundtrack, pinpoint controls, and a buttery smooth difficulty. It’s great for speed running too if that’s your jam.
It's very good. I like the sequel as well I kind of think they're both equal but I could go either way.
To me it felt short game .I mean the only complain I have is that all those cool abilities you got we didn't get enough of a usefulness of them in level or boss fighting. Look at super Metroid the weapons were used everywhere
@@tanigarcia100 I’m personally not a fan of Super Metroid’s controls. A lot of those abilities feel clunky to use, whereas I feel every in MMX is buttery smooth. But they’re both great games.
@@TIDbitRETRO I don't mean control wise I mean example mega man the tornado att is useless it would have been cool to climb higher or dash to farder location. More use in game
I would have had Super Star Wars in there - really like that game a lot.
OG DKC is my favourite Snes game - had it at the time, I get that you could argue about 2 being superior technically or whatever - but the impact of seeing those pre-rendered graphics for first time, Soundtrack, Humour lives long and i still play it here and there to this day - lists shpuld be personal and come down to what you love playing most and it's hard to beat Nostalgia as well when you have memories.
I still love 2 by the way.
🙋🏻♂️
Super Star Wars looked and sounded amazing, but the gameplay really stunk
Rock-n-Roll Racing
That game kicks ass. It’s one of the gems of all hidden gems on the SNES.
@@TIDbitRETRO definitely.
Blizzard used to be so good at making games 😭
I used to be in hospital all the time with asthma when I was a kid and they had a SNES on a trolley with that on and I played it for hours 😂 defo a hidden gem.
Pat giving props to Tecmo Super Bowl and UN Squadron. Solid.
Turtles in Time should be Top 10. Also would consider EVO Search for Eden, Pocky and Rocky, Sunset Riders, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors Top 25 games.
Good list though any top ranking of SNES titles that doesn't have DKC2 in the top 10 is one I'm going to side-eye just a bit.
Terranigma is such an underrated game mostly because it wasn't released in North America. Id say ita definitely a top 10 maybe top 5 game of all time.
They need to release a soul blazer trilogy collection. SB, IoG, TN - I'd buy that in a second.
Id have to go with Link to the Past as #1 for me. and probably the best game of all time
I actually just started collecting Super Famicom games with box. The art works are gorgeous 😊😊😊
The foldable SMW manual is utterly gorgeous.
Maybe it's just me but zombies ate my neighbors will always be in my top 10 for snes. So many memories with that game and can still pick up and play today and still enjoy it. It's quite honestly one of my favorite games of all time. That's just my opinion
I honestly kinda expected it to be on that list.
Yeah I still remember always finding out new things in game like the secret ray Gun in the first Castle lol and them the level 1 bonus out of the top bush at the top got lucky and got a rocket in the drawer and that's how I saw the purple creaters that I had never seen in levels I wonder were they were cause when you finished game you see them.
1 LTTP
2 chrono trigger
3 super metroid
4 FF 3/6
5 castlevania 4
6 DKC 2
7 ogre battle
8 super punchout
9 F zero
10 marioworld
11 street fighter 2
12 mega man X
13 FF 2/4
14 lufia 2
15 demon crest
16 lost vikings
17 contra 3
18 star fox
19 yoshi island
20 earthbound
21 mario rpg
22 earthworm jim
Ill go with this not really in order. I feel some games like ogre battle are criminally underrated because of the genre. Ogre battle 64 wouldnt exist without that
Ogre battle is an amazing game, but it was really held back because of the UI.
Zombies ate my neighbors should be up there too
Reasonable list. My number 1 is and always will be EarthBound as its the one game that gave me as many memories as my number 2 Super Mario World when I was a younglin. I'm aware EarthBound is flawed in some aspects... Damn SNES had so many bangers (and some trash as well RACE DRIVIN)
We got Earthbound with the guide book at Toys R Us in probably 1996 or so. That game will forever be top 5 in my book if not number one. So much to love, especially if you grew up with it.
@@buttguy that's the thing do cause the game sales were bad so in a sense the game was a failure at the time not to mention that there are a lot of people who don't like rpg games. And for those who were lucky to get it it's a masterpiece
Overall, I appreciate this list bc every game at least "feels in the ballpark" vs sometimes when a list has games out of nowhere.
I endorse.
Short answer. Whatever I added to my snes mini.
The Sydlexia NES and SNES top 100 lists are great and fun to read too.
Recently, I started playing a 3 player game on Secret of Mana!
Game is cool.
The problem with the sports games are that for every Tecmo Super Bowl you have a game like Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball! The Genesis was a lot more consistent. For every NHL 94 you had a game like Mutant League Football. Though that being said I am surprised NBA Jam wasn't in the top 25. May not be the best game ever but everyone played it with siblings and friends back then. Walk up to anyone alive back then and say "BOOM-SHAK-A-LAKA!" And they will know what you are talking about.
BLCB was a shame because it could have been an amazing game. Dumb control scheme and lobotomized AI really neutered that game.
NBA Jam TE is one of my favorites on SNES.
"I don't know about these all time classics". So confused why I'm still subbed. 😂
Cuz there isnt other retro channels like this lol. I feel your pain
Pilot wings would be in my top 25 for sure
Secret of Mana is not a Zelda clone at all, I think Ian is way off
They dont play games
Masterpiece. Two player co-op was a game changer as a kid. Love Zelda, but SoM is right there.
@@fiction916 it was actually three player if you had the multitap
"SMRPG at #12"
I'm literally playing SMRPG as I watch this. Love it to death.
So many bosses are really creative in Mario rpg like Johnny Juno and the axem rangers to name a few
Very shocked that mortal kombat 2 isn’t in the top 25. That was an incredible port of the game. And also, Turtles in time not being in the top 10 is downright criminal.
It depends on where was the survey taken. If most participants were out of the US, ofc most sport games will not be high on the list. People in Latin America didn’t give s*it about American football. I think nba jam, sunset riders, DKC2 and mortalmkombat 2 should have been higher, while super punch out should have been out.
EVO the Search for Eden is definitely top 25, maybe top 10. Just a lot of people haven’t played it.
I agree. It was huge in the emulation era but didnt grow like earthbound and chrono trigger did.
Personal preference and nostalgia will always dictate the lists. There in no true list.
Your right me personally don't really play RPGS so I like platformer ones better like sparkter,Congos, sky blazer, etc
I love final fight guy and ff3
" War craft 2 is an f zero clone " - Ian Ferguson
This feels like a list of games that most everyone played at their and their friends’ houses. Not the “hidden gems” or the games that “should” have made it, but rather the games that you were most likely to find in your and all your friends’ collections. The ones everyone would have remembered playing.
it's a hyphen not a "dash", we don't call "spider dash man." It's "Spider Hyphen Man!"
My Top 25; though, my play of the full SNES library is extremely limited.
1. Super Mario World
2. Tecmo Super Bowl III: Final Edition
3. Final Fantasy II (US)

Bedroom List: Simcity. Chrono. Zelda. Metroid. Act Raiser.
Top 25 *Dreamcast* games 🥰
yes, please! Shenmue is number 1 always
Quick…someone get Pat a copy of The Secret of Mana. Phenomenal game.
I think it is a situation where, people who play sports tittles play them predominantly. In the NES days, we played what was there. Even Super NES. I would have given Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball and NBA Jam some love in the 100. Also, I am making a supposition that sports video game players prolly aren't video game journalists for the most part. Inherent bias. I'll play chel, but my heart is schmups, RPGs and platformers. ^_^
Ken griffey baseball was so underrated. They did a great job of mixing arcade and simulation in that game. I collected baseball cards then, and you could change the players names. The stats were the same, so you could look at the cards and find who was who
Love you guys. Can you please keep the camera on Ian's face and not have it keep switching to Pat? Not sure if it's just my OCD but its super distracting when it keeps switching.. at least for me
This is one of the easiest consoles to find 25 games that are still godlike to this day.
- Final Fantasy VI
- Chrono Trigger
- Yoshi's Island
- Donkey Kong Country
- Dixie Kongs Trouble
- DKC3
- Earthbound
- Super Metroid
- Secret of Mana
- Mega Man X
- Mega Man X 2
- Mega Man X 3
- Super Castlevania
- A Link To The Past
- F-Zero
- Super Mario Kart
Since I didnt really play many of the games, it get's difficult chose now. Probably some more RPGs, maybe Street Fighter 2. Somehow I dont like Mario World as much, same goes for Mario RPG, although they are still great games.
Too bad, the west didnt get many tactical RPGs like Front Mission, FEDA, Fire Emblem, or they couldve been on the list.
Nice to see love for DKC3
I think the issue is the sports games are multi-platform but the list should have NHL 94 or Super Tecmo Bowl.
This is my personal list Pat. Hope you don't mind me sharing!
25. Super Punch Out
24. Zombies Ate My Neighbors
23. Kirby's Dream Course
22. Super Street Fighter II
20. Mega Man X3
19. F-Zero
18. Donkey Kong Country 3
17. Legend of the Mystical Ninja
16. Demons Crest
15 Super Ghouls N Ghosts
14. Star Fox
13. Super Mario Kart
12. Super Mario All Stars
11. A Link to the Past
10. Chrono Trigger
9. Final Fantasy 6
8. Yoshi's Island
7. Donkey Kong Country
6. Castlevania 4
5. Mega Man X
4. Super Mario World
3. Donkey Kong Country 2
2. Super Mario RPG
1. Earthbound
@@wildwest1832 thanks!
@@SharonisCarin321 whoops deleted my comment. Yeah, I like the list though
My personal top 10, based only on how much fun I had with them and not on what a “typical Top SNES Game” list would look like:
(In no particular order)
1. Final Fantasy III (VI)
2. Super Metroid
3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
4. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
5. Axelay
6. Super Castlevania IV
7. Actraiser
8. Super Baseball 2020
9. WWF Royal Rumble
10. Super Street Fighter II
Honorable mention: Mega Man 7, Super Double Dragon, Contra 3, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy II (IV)
The mario games aren’t on the same level as Donkey Kong Country. Those are timeless masterpieces that still stand up today visually and aurally.
I love dracula x also and of course my list would have some japan snes games on it like goemon and dragon quest 5, trials of mana and terrinigma
I'd love to see a top 25 SNES deep cuts list by pat and Ian.
Hardly thinking about it. Zelda Link to the past is #1 for me. Mario kart/world a close 2nd or 3rd
I gotta say calling secret of mana a Zelda clone is silly
They dont play games
Even though it’s not my personal favorite of the trilogy, any list that doesn’t have Terranigma at least in the top 10 is invalid to me. It’s 2022, the game has had an official English translation for over two decades. No excuses not include it at this point; it’s a 10/10 experience.
That is not really a game that came out in the US though. That is why most don't have it on their lists.
Ties are such a copout.
Super Smash TV is a Top 10 SNES game in my book. Pure bloody mayhem with no slowdown. Big Money! Big prizes! I LOVE IT!
That's such a normie list. If it was voted on by dozens of people then I'd get why so many commonly referenced games and franchises rank so high on it, but for a list that's curated by any one person, I'd expect to see at least a few more deep cuts. Just sounds like whoever put it together never strayed off the beaten path at all.
Its that avgn influence
You guys need to put some respect on Super Castlevania IV.
Super Mæriow
Sonic the headdog
Doom 64
Mindcraft
Just to mention a few
My personal top ten would have to include SMW, chrono trigger, megaman X, Terranigma, Castlevania IV and sensible soccer
Hey @Pat Will there be a nes marathon this year????
Living room lists and bedroom lists are way different lists. Also, nostalgia lists and nowaday lists are way different.
Pat needs to do a live stream of Super Metroid!
But where would you rate E.V.O.?
The RETRO Top 100 has it at #65 out of over 700 games-an excellent position (i.e., very high).
Ken Griffey Jr maybe one of the best baseball games ever
#1 - Chrono Trigger
why u talkin bout a list from " someone " and dont make one by urself? or am i wrong?
My top 25
Final Fantasy II (IV)
Zelda LTTP
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid
Castlevania IV
Contra III
Breath of Fire
Secret of Mana
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Brain Lord
Paladin’s Quest
Lufia 1
Lufia 2
Magical Quest Mickey Mouse
Ogre Battle
NBA Jam
Robotrek
Secret of Evermore
Maximum Carnage
Mario Kart
Breath of Fire II
The 7th Saga
SMW
This list has an unfortunate lack of Terranigma. Also, Yoshi's Island deserves the number one spot, imo.
I know several people who cant get past the whole baby mario part of Yoshi's Island. Ruins the game for them, completely. I love that game and grew up with it but many people have zero love for it. Shame because it is a really great game.
Here's a better idea for a list, how about one of games NOT made or published by Nintendo, Konami, Capcom or Square Enix.
Square Enix wasn't a thing back then
Best Game not by a Big Name Publisher would be R-Type III.
Like Wild Guns or Space Megaforce?
I had a lot of fun with Operation Logic Bomb back in the day. Pretty cool graphics, dark story, gameplay was fun. A bit repetitive at some point though. But I loved it, and replayed it many times.
Secret of Mana def not a Zelda clone. And when it comes to sports games it seems like ones on Sega threw in a kind of fantasy element to some making them more unique and original. I’m not sure snes had those. As for #1 and #2, both can be flipped on any day for me, ones dark and the other has a cutesy charm to it, whichever you’re in the mood for.
Super Mario RPG is top 5. Rock n Roll Racing is in the 20's.
DKC is a lot better than DKC2 imo so I wouldn't be bold to assume it's above 2 just because it's more familiar.
Also, Castlevania IV is a masterpiece and the doubt of integrity for its placement on the list seemed bizarre.
Agree DKC1 is a masterpiece, music and levels are way better than the other two and also prefer the balance of having one big stronger character and one lighter/quicker character.
Super Mario World is fine, but it’s the one I revisit the least. Way too easy for most of it and once you know all the secrets by heart, there just isn’t as much challenge.
Over time i started loving mario 3 more than world for the same reasons.
@@benjaminyoung9694 Same!! Yo, that's crazy. As my preference for World went down, my preference for 3 went up.
Sports games definitely don’t get enough love. Retro ones especially. Thank you Pat for saying that.
"You gotta have 2 sports games on this list".....wtf lol. Just because something exists doesn't mean it has to go on a list.
He’s looking at it from a objective point of view.
Bro where the hell is Street fighter 2 Turbo? Everyone had a copy of some version of street fighter 2. Its the grand daddy of fighting games and it still holds up today. You could easily swap starfox out with SF2T
Super Metroid was the 1st game I ever bought with my own money, and Upper Brinstar will always be the theme of the SNES to me.
EDIT: UPPER Brinstar, not LOWER. Jesus Brain, you can do better lol
Why is Ian always sick lately
Safe and Effective ☠💉
Mortal kombat 2 would make the top 25 on a Sega genesis list for sure
NO KILLER INSTINCT?!? ULLLLLTRRAAAA!!!
Terranigma & illusion of Gaia??
Gotta say I actually prefer DKC over the DKC 2!
Same. Both awesone games tho
Me too. The soundtrack alone hits different. I used to rent the other ones and couldn’t take to them, I felt like the levels were a bit samey but I think at the end of the day it boils down to the nostalgia for the one you had.
@@dissonant21 The levels are way different in the sequels than the on the og. Maybe you should trya again.
Sim city belongs in that list imo
Fell for FZero lately.
On SNES NBA TE is the best, on N64 its Hangtime.
I agree with Pat that Sim City should be on the list. An incredible port of the sort of game that wasn't generally thought of as suited to Consoles.
Love all the games on this list but Super Metroid has always been no. 1 for me.
I'm blown away by many of the games pat says he knows nothing about....secret of mana...mega man x...the dude made a friggin guide book. I dunno man. Gotta call sus on pat. YOU SUS PAT
Pat needed to use save states to beat super mario world on his stream. And yes he used an emulator and keyboard to play it.
He doesnt play the games. The nes marathon is just him playing every game for 10 minutes. Thats how he reviews his games
@@NinjaRunningWild that's the stupidest shit I've ever heard
He's the NES punk, not the SNES punk ;).
Also he mentioned lots of times he let others play some of the games he knew little about or if it wasn't his genre.
These are heavy hitters though, I never played MMX but still know about it.
i mean who the fuck is seth abramson lel
It's a good list. I'm not super into most of the lower of the 25, but that's fine. I also don't like Mario Kart, but that's a personal problem and I get why other folks love it. My only real issue putting DKC over DKC2. The second one is better by every objective measure.
The 🐐GOAT🐐 at #1 where it belongs
Super Ghouls n Ghosts is absolutely a top 25 SNES game. F-Zero definitely belongs on the list, too. It’s one of the only pre-3D polygonal racing games that’s still worth going back and playing these days.
And Super Castlevania IV is up there in the top three of the best in the series, pretty much tied with Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow, depending on my mood.
Although this was interesting hearing the point of view of a couple of non-SNES fans.
Also, I’d rank DKC1 above Diddy’s Kong Quest, too. I really didn’t like the second or third games in that series.
Super Ghouls and Ghosts is trash.
@@Rountree1985 Dude, just because you suck at it doesn’t make it a bad game.
Why did you skip 23,21,20 etc
