One surprising and interesting application of Scaler 2 has been letting it control Drums.
I route Scaler 2 into a synthesizer VST with a drum kit mapped to the keys, and then explore Scaler's Performance modes. I've had some radically inventive and catchy rhythms drop out of it! It's really flexible too, as you tweak drum sounds in your synth, change performance modes, performance playback settings, etc. Try different chords for different hits!
We have a few of our users do that and wield some great results using the performances as you mentioned. Funnily enough I have never tried that myself but will do!
Amazing video and this plugin is a total gamechanger. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Thank you for supporting Scaler.
Hey thanks for this! There's been so many update to the product, that I lost track when I was not using it regularly. Much appreciated for all you do!
You're welcome and thank you. You're not alone! We thought it was time to make an up to date recap video to run alongside the course so really between the two you can learn absolutely everything you need to know about Scaler 2. Hurts me to think that thousands of people aren't realising its potential because of its complexity.
@@davidecarbonemusicGood to know about the update video and the course (which I'll purchase) goes hand-in-hand. Sure it can be a complex piece of software, but on the other hand we can use what works for us and then build upon them. Until I learn music theory via the keyboard myself, I look forward to Scaler 2 as being one of my aids toward getting there. Keep on pushing!
Scaler 2.9 is a game-changer in many areas, from essential harmony to complex chord changes, voicings, and genres. There isn't much it can't do. It's time to revisit all the jazz re-harmonizing possibilities I had forgotten or never knew. :)
No matter your level of musicianship or theory, this seems like an amazing tool and something to keep yourself from getting trapped in a box and keep the creative blood flowing consistently.
Hey mate i can't agree more
Agree 100%! Truly amazing!!
If I could like this comment twice I would
Glad to see you're still uploading videos, and supporting the community.
WOW. i just purchased S2 & it's a BIG leap from using Captain Chords. It feels more natural IMO. i've been so used to using the interface with CC so i'm still trying to get my head around not being able to use a timeline. but other than that, I love it. it's a great investment! thank you.
Thanks for joining the community. It's a great journey for us all and hope it brings you lots of inspiration. There are some big development coming for Scaler end of year so enjoy the ride and join the community over at forum.scalerplugin.com
Such a powerful plugin. I'm really glad to have this particular video, because i lost touch with Scaler since it was first released and i've missed all the updates and i need to start my learning curve from scratch. So, perfect video for me! Thanks
Doing the lords work these people. Please keep engaged and moving and updating. So amazing.
Always a blast to see you in your comfort zone and talk about a great product, thank you Davide.
This is amazing. Thanks for breaking it down for us!
best video yet about Scaler
You earned my follow. Because you’re the best I’ve seen on explaining this vst
Well, this is the video I've been waiting for since I purchased Scaler2! Thank you so much, it helped a LOT
Thank you David it is always good to revisit the application I thank you for providing this tutorial. We all have different teaching styles and learning styles as well and maybe this time around I will catch something I missed. Thank you
Thank you for this one.
Thanks so much for the revised guide. I really had a hard time with the original tutorial and always had to wing it when using the software.
Mind blowing, I didn’t know this tool is so powerful. Thank you!
Scaler has the best instructional videos! Thanks.
Hi👋 & Thank you so much.
Today, I will be using Scaler 2 to help with songwriters block.
The last few days, I have had zero inclination and wherewithal to be creative. Absolute apathy.
In order to be consistent and deliver results to the productions that hire me to provide scores, soundtracks, and songs, I MUST force myself to a creative, inspired space.
Based on this video and others, I am looking forward to what develops.
I plan on Scaler 2 providing a spark for me to layer and adjust and add on to using Movie Themes and straight chords and progressions to further build into my own design.
Thanks again so very much.
I just purchased the complete training course yesterday, but this is a great intro to that course. Thanks!
Hi have you a link to it ?
This was well needed, will check it out after being scared away by its complexity )
Very Good And To The Point Tutorial!!!!!!
THANK YOU !!!!!!!
Great tutorial there, really easy to follow along and very informative. Thank you
This will be a great starting point for my songs! I purchased the Scaler 2 Training Course from Plugin Boutique a while ago; and I really need to delve into it! Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial video David! 🙂
David..a really great tutorial to launch folks in a new realm of creativety🙏🏿🙏🎶👍
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for the review. Nice to explore modes with.
Great app. Thanks for the breakdown!
Around 2 weeks ago I spent about $1000 on different vsts. Scaler 2, scaler EQ and piano colors are the only things I bought that I don’t regret.
Thanks refeshing my understanding of scaler....greetz from amsterdam
Thank you very much.Very interesting and great tool for making music.
Really cool, helped me understand better.
Started with the iPad version (love it) and just bought the DAW version - easy transition to a top plugin in any category!
This is such a lovely tool.
This is a great video mate. Just got this piece of software and absolutely loving it
Great to hear! We all love our Scaler journey and hope it brings lots of creativity right back at you!
I always had a very basic understanding of theory, This software helps to connect so many dots. Ands it helps introducing new concepts (for me) in a way that is easy to understand and you can apply it directly ! This software almost feels like i'm cheating ;)
So Cool! Thanks!😎
We're always excited for more content from you lot. Great plugin, I wonder what an AI integration would feel/look like going into 202____. Cheers
Very helpful video
Superb software.
Really appreciate your videos explaing how to use this great plugin. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching and supporting Scaler 2
I got this years a long time ago. Many failed attempts. Maybe I can finally learn it.🥰
Truly a marvel! Thank you!
Thank you for supporting!
Awesome tool indeed. But so extensive in it's vast features. Would be great to learn more about different workflows to find my own favourite one.
✨✨✨Thank you, Sir, 🙏🌺😇✨✨✨, I m 1 of urs fans, Sir
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone! ❤💯🙏
This VST, the Cognitone Synfire Pro 2 VST, any of Madrona Labs VSTs, the u-he Zebra Legacy and ACE VSTs, and the MeldaProduction MDrummer VST = Never a possibility of running out of creative ideas.
I would love to see more on this vst
Any update on creating custom guitar tunings and having Scaler adapt the chords and scales to how the strings are tuned? That would be pretty amazing.
Love scaler. Needs a master class 😂
Excellent - exactly what new Scaler 2 users are looking for! BTW - I’m promoting your Scaler course with a YT short on my channel.
The performance features in Scaler are next level. Slaved to a sequencer like Stepic you can make some amazingly complex semi-generative music. It would be nice to have another layer or two of randomization inside of the performance menus though and the chord playback duration settings are a bit challenging to work with. Maybe I just haven't fully figured them out but it seems like they don't quantize to the timing options properly. Perhaps a graphic that showed where the notes fell in a measure as you were setting the chord duration would make it clearer what was going on. Sounds like a lot of work to actually pull off...
There's some big changes coming to Scaler in the near future. I am sure you will see some of those things pop up! Thanks for feedback
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! Just got my copy a couple days ago and the more I use it, the more impressed I am!
Great to hear! We love Scaler, hope it brings you love too!
@@SchoolofSynthesis It brings me frustration and depression.
Many people don't understand Scaler 2 and find it too complicated. Just what the different areas do and how you can use them is not so easy to understand. Perhaps we need more videos like this one, which explains Scaler 2 in a practical and simple way.
Agreed, that's why we made it. Changes are coming to Scaler later in '24 but more videos for Scaler 2 inbound!
Thank for sharing this. I have a question please. Why my keyboard does not play or sounds with scaler 2? I can not hear a sound when I play my keyboard in scaler 2 in Logic Pro x.
Thanks
it is not much I know - I purchased the full course as well - this is just a little thanks (from my heart) for your effort (again).
Thanks for the good vibes @Bernard. We appreciate the gesture very much hope you get lots of good vibes back from Scaler 2!
hi, thanks for a very good explanation of Scaler2, and since I play music with a quarter-tone scaler (oriental Scaler - middle east - arbic), I wonder if it is possible to add my own Scaler? Is it possible to add your own rhythms? Thanks for the answer.
How does the sync with Daw button work?
What does it sync?
Hello and so many thanks for Scaler 2.Is there any chance to add the 5/8 or 7/8 or 9/8 more tempo signatures?Thank you again!
Hey there's quite a few of those signatures in performances and expressions and there's also the ability to apply triplet/swing quantising as a global function to help you write in this time signatures.
Of course, the Drag feature in Scaler 2's MIDI Capture only exists in the PC and Mac versions and not on the iPad version, due to the inability to drag and drop from one app to another on an iPad.
Are 3rd parties able to make melody, bass or rhythm midi inside Scaler? being able to import melodies or bass midi inside would be great.
This is a fantastic tool👍🏽👍🏽. Can this be used in a live performance where things are triggered on the fly?
Yes, absolutely. Check out ua-cam.com/video/PLMDz9xxTEc/v-deo.htmlsi=og2Yuw0WksUpwqy1
@@SchoolofSynthesis Thanks a whole bunch. I’ll dive in and see what I can gather. So far so good 😊
can you do some hard testing with different DAW . scaler is giving ppl crashes... if i highlight a set of chords and drag them out to single track multichannel in reaper it crashes 100 percent of the time. I saw it crashing Ableton on someone i know yesterday a bunch of times too. The Drag button seems to still work fine. I would test some things. Thanks.
Just a amazing plugin and after a tour going through many vst years later I come back to use scaler 2 :-) My DAW has a hissing sound kind of like the ocean and wind when i load this, anyone have a idea what the problem could be? I want to study scaler 2 the next weeks and get creative.
Those videos are incredible. But is there a full user manuel than be read onlien or offline?
Yes of course @erix Scaler 2 saves a copy of it's manual on your system. You can access it easily by clicking the S logo and then Help within Scaler 2
@@SchoolofSynthesis Thanks, I didn't know, I'll check that tomorrow!
How to make chords play 4 bars in DAW sync mode? When I go to settings and set it to 4 bars and press play on playlist (FL STUDIO) it plays ok, as suppose to, 1 chords - 4 bars. But when I use scaler with en external plugin it only plays 2 chords when set to 4 bars? What am I doing wrong?
Hard to answer here without knowing exactly what you are doing but the community forum is a great place to post these things and show examples as there are thousands of users that are always willing to help and better there. Hope that helps: forum.scalerplugin.com
Great thank you... With Scaler 2, I can create automatic chords, arpegs, etc. of my previous compositions. How can I find or make chords? Can you make a video on this subject? Thank you..🙏👏👏👏
Hi Kaya, there are so many ways to do create, detect and construct chords. It's a case of having a read through the manual or looking through the playlist below which has hours of content or enrolling in the 'Official Scaler 2 Course' online.schoolofsynthesis.com/scaler-2-course-page
A very good product except difficulty looking at grayed text on gray background. Any alternative skins available? Regards.
Yes you can change the skins, textures and fonts in settings, all of the GUI is being overhauled Q4 24
Great guide, I got scaler through plugin boutique, does the course automatically come with it ?
Not unless you purchased the bundle. The course is 15 USD and well worth it if you want to get the most out of Scaler 2 but not necessary.
Love your products but fully thought this was John Oliver running the demo from just the thumbnail 😆
i have more questions now than before i watch
I was enthused about Scaler and went to the App Store on my Mac to buy it
It appears that it is only available for iPad?
I’m guessing the Logic screens are from Logic for iPad
I’m not sure?
Really great! Very interested on this plugin. Do you know if that mode which "locks" us in a specific scale works while we play in a MIDI controler? And, do you have an affiliate link?
Hi Marcos yes of course, all features are designed to work with all MIDI controllers especially the Key-Lock feature
@@SchoolofSynthesisGreat to know. Thank you for your answer. Already purchased it. It's really great.
I have trouble using live playing along with my melody or holding bars on chord as I need. So I got stuck on this and tried Ezkeys. Do you have any videos showing how to do it?
Can you explain a bit better what you are trying to do so we can respond better?
love the product, there seems to be an annoying glitch recently though where when I drop chords into the daw from the program it changes the tempo to 120 every time, even though the tempo in project is set different? any advise?
You must have asked Logic Pro to import tempo and then chose don't ask again! That's a Logic Pro issue: to reset that message to the default - after you have indicated "Don't ask again" - you can do it in Preferences->General>Notifications->reset notifications.
@@SchoolofSynthesis appreciate the speedy reply . I’ll check that out thanks :))
Scaler is an amazing plugin. Hopefully the third installment adds a play in key function to help create melodies faster.
Wait, isn't that there at 12:30' in this video (keys-lock) section?
@@SchoolofSynthesis Lmao.. you didn't have to make me feel bad lol. thanks!!!
Hey David, any chance of Scaler adopting smart VOICE LEADING?
Somebody's got to do it first. Seems like that should be a thing available in a world with the logic of doing so in Cubase Chord Pads for some time now, and AI popping up in every tool. Imagine building progressions where the next chord possibilities aren't just ranked by cadence or some logic, but after you decide to consider one, also then ranked by voice leading 'smoothness' using every (reasonably) possible arrangement of chord tones, including all the basics like drop 2, etc. and doing things like separating dissonant chord tones distantly and maybe even some toggles to tweak that and other "rules" on and off. Those at the top would sound sweet, and progress downward to greater movement between chord tones.
Now when I want to go from the IIIm7 to the VI7 I get a list of choices for the voice leading to use and I can easily audition each one in context, maybe with a "play "x" chords then new chord" option for me to set how many chords in the progression to use in the audition before the new chord.
I'd pay a hefty upgrade fee for a really intelligent voice leading capability in Scaler 3, to me that's the final frontier other than entirely AI generated progressions or suggested progressions from any point onward in what you've already built.
Also have some ideas for a new type of step sequencer if you guys have ever considered getting into that space with a tool.
Thanks @brianmi40 Have passed on the feedback, we know there's some things coming later this year so hope to make some announcements soon!
This is amazing plugin but.... When can we expect an update.. Or version 3? Bit more options in randomization
Hi, the scaler team are always updating. Scaler 2.9 due very soon and the devs have talked about a major transition later 2024!
Question: when I drag my pattern into my DAW, it always plays when I play back at the beginning of the track even when I place it in a later section of my song. It also imports a a different tempo. Do you know what could be the cause of this? Thanks!
Hard to diagnose here on UA-cam but please do head over to the community at forum.scalerplugin.com for help from the wonderful Scaler community. In the meantime our guess is you have DAW sync turned on and you have a preference in Logic Pro X which auto assumes tempo when you are dragging midi in. You must have clicked yes and don't ask again at some stage. To reset that message to the default - after you have indicated "Don't ask again" - you can do it in Logic Pro X in Preferences->General>Notifications->reset notifications.
I really love scaler and I use it a lot. But I do miss one thing: A real song builder section D like you have e.g. in software like ezkeys with a real optical representation of the chord lenght. In the C section of scaler it is possible to build several song parts, but to edit those chords in the edit menu without any visual change of the chord squares is not as intuitive as it could be. You alsways have to open up the edit area instead of just streching the chord to the right lenght in your track. I know, it is possible to do this into your DAW, but then you have to work in two different places. Thats no critic of scaler, its just a suggestion for further improvement.
100% agree. You will like what Scaler looks like in 2024!
@@davidecarbonemusic Sounds promising 😉
Where is Voice Grouping in the iPad version?A video specific to the iPad version would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hey, does this Scaler 2 for iPad overview help? ua-cam.com/video/pTK02dwqawI/v-deo.htmlsi=mDSUFDNJrJCmnkaE
Ready made chord progressions would be perfect for the slow and lively country songs that I love. :)
There are lots of ballad, slow pop, rock chords that would suit in the genre section! Country could be a category though!
@@SchoolofSynthesis You're right, I guess I'm not equipped enough for this :):)
The MIDI Capture feature doesn't seem to be able capture CC64 (sustain pedal) messages going through Scaler. At least I haven't been able to do so.
Hi, go to settings, preferences and try setting 'Sustain Pedal CC' to Pass through. Does that help?
I should have watched this earlier.
I don't know music theory. Does this require key playing?
No! That's the whole point of the plugin. Scaler is a wonderful environment to create and learn as a byproduct of your creating! The demo is free on Plugin Boutique
I'm sorry, I must be missing something, I followed the "Complete Playlist" link. I don't see a video on how to use 3rd party instruments, what is it called?
Here you go: ua-cam.com/play/PLzUwuiQFNAPQk1ymH60_0a8lkCIlNJM_z.html&si=H-FnX04EeJMZrrGZ
Scaler 2 makes the pitch drops a half step of the instrument I’m using. If I turn off Scaler, the pitch goes up again. Anyone know how to fix this?
Sounds like you are using an older version of Scaler on Apple Silicon, please update to 2.8.1 or 2.8.2
@@SchoolofSynthesis thank you very much ! That did the trick!
Please could you make a standalone version and the ability to record ideas, without a DAW?
The developers have confirmed standalone and major overhaul of Scaler is on its way this year!
YOOOOOOOOO!!!@@SchoolofSynthesis
WHat this video showed me is knowing music theory is your best friend.
I was trying to find out where the midi capture is I rewind it four times because I wasn’t paying attention and still didn’t get it so I just clicked off the video
They actually thinking.
Bottom line… Scaler is the best vst I’ve ever purchased.
Absolutely. The work and love they put into this plugin and the tutorials is outstanding.
Worst for me.
I have a limited brain and this plugin only made for the brainy capitalists.
Amen.
@Jellybeantiger Don't sell yourself short! Scaler will grow your brain!
I've just discovered it & I'm blown away. What a great tool for writing and composition.
11:12 "performances are fantastic, because it just plays your chords" This is not true for complex chords, and it is such a shame! That performances does not follow the selected chord is the thing that hold Scaler back for me. It seems to only follow the basic triad, and if you have a complex chord it sometimes even goes outside the chord notes. This is such a shame, I really wish performances would just follow the scale degrees of the chord, that would be so much more useful. I really hope they'll fix this in future updates!
I think there may be some confusion here. Performances only play the notes of your chords - no exceptions. It can add octaves etc but it never adds a note that isn't in the chord you are triggering. That is what Davide is referring to. Possibly you are referring to Phrases, phrases do indeed break down your chord into a triad an rebuild from there. Both options are there for flexibility,
@@SchoolofSynthesis You are right about only Phrases going outside the chord, I misspoke there. But you are wrong about Performances playing (all) the notes of your chord. Performances only plays a basic triad of whatever chord you put in. So if you make complex chords with more notes than a triad, Scaler will not play (all) the notes of your chords - no exceptions. This is probably due to Performances having been recorded with only triads, so there is no programming for how to fit chords with 4 or 5 notes into a performance. And this is such a shame, because why build a plugin with such vast amounts of complex chord, is Performances can only make use of basic triads. Hopefully they will add Performances with complex chords in Scaler 3!
I purchased Scler 2 when it first entered the market. I've switched computers since then and downloaded to my new computer. However, before I was able to DL the software it made me choose a new password. when I opened this software in Logic it gave me 3 choices. The only viable choice was to purchase a license even though I had one originally. If I can't get this to work . I think I'll be ok because Logic offer similar functionality, but truly disappointed in this product's handling with customer support.
Hi Stuart, if you have purchased a licence originally for Scaler 2 it's your for life. Unfortunately this channel can't help you with these issues but as it is available exclusively from Plugin Boutique have you contacted them directly? Also please post any issues mentioned specifically what is happening over at forum.scalerplugin.com where the devs lurk and the community is very responsive. We are long-term users and lovers of Logic Pro X but don't think it covers 1% of Scaler's functionality so would be a shame to see you abandon Scaler for some resolvable technical issue.
"LIKE" 622
I wish scaler would improve their sequencer to make it more creative than mathematical. This would improve chord progression sequences. Most Scaler progressions sound the same. The way the duration is set in the playback timing is so horrible. You choose between x1 , x 0, 75, x0,5 , etc. This is not even visually intuitive. All they need is a simple pattern like Klimper. Or sequence generator for the chord progression like RapiComposer. Then Scaler will win the competition against Captain Chords. Where can one submit a feature request ?????
Davide has mentioned that there is an overhaul due in 24 that will make do with that system. Totally agreed it feels like a database because it had to be square pegged through a round hole. We think you like what you will see soon!
@@SchoolofSynthesis , thanks for the response. I hope this get's done. if not at least document the attempt, trial and process. If scaler could generate chorth rythms and patterns in the sequencer, that would be amazing. Also able 12 have some great features. so between scaler and ableton 12, someone will sort this out.
I never use this plugin.
Too unintuitive.
I press each item in the upper menu and think "What does this do?" instead of knowing.
That is where Scaler 2 is not quick for me.
Chord Pads in Cubase is more for my limited brain.
Much easier to create different chords and it has a melody mode with different phrases you select from presets which is easier.
Raise the price of Scaler by $5. Then throw is the full instruction course for free. IMHO.
Thanks for feedback. The course is 50% off and Scaler is about 20% off so generally it is 'thrown in' 🙂We want all Scaler 2 users to access the course.
@@SchoolofSynthesis Well, it's not really about the money. I think the software is complex enough that users need a lot of help. Black Magic, for examples, has hours of high quality free tutorials for Resolve. It would benefit you to give the tutorials away as it would improve sales and help users to be better at using Scaler. (I own Scaler by the way and love it, but it is a bit complicated to use.)
This is still presuming that the beginner to Scaler2, actually knows a lot. This is not helpful for me, as he interjects comments that he believes are just obvious to the listener. When he describes a process, he then will say something to the effect “ this does this….then you’ve got your blah and blah and of course that will do this and that causing the other, but we don’t need that right now so we’ll come back to it.” There is FAR TOO MUCH INFO for a beginner video. I need to know simply stated, one by one, what this app does. I’ve watched it twice, and still really don’t know how to make the chord progression, and how to put that into my fl studio play list for a tune. All the serious, incredible tricks, bells &whistles could come later. I just want to know, simply, how to put something simple together. I bought this because I am NOT a pianist. He says what it will do, but I’m not seeing step by step, what to hit to get there. This feels like lesson two, maybe THREE!
No doubt it's a complex piece of software and there are many ways to tackle a beginners video. One persons trash is anther persons treasure and that applies to making Scaler 2 videos too. May we suggest you have a look at the Official Scaler 2 Course. It's about 15$ right now and it is 380 mins and covers everything in steps with Q&A and tests. Def the most conclusive way to learn Scaler. Don't need it but over 6,000 students have completed it and found it helpful.
@@SchoolofSynthesis Excellent! I’ll try that. Thanks so much. I was having a tough go the other day, and I was frustrated. So sorry if I came off grouchy. You sometimes forget when writing, that your mood stays right there, where you wrote it. My apologies. Thanks again.
I have tried to buy the course with the link on this video, but after putting it through PayPal, twice, it still never went through. I check my PayPal, and nothing there.
