Thanks for watching! Emmmn well for now we have kept the same chain! Thought we would recommend an 11 speed! I just think a longer chain might be too long!
Hi Hanna, I’ve just upgraded my P line 12 speed to 15 gears!! I bought the Brommie+ kit sold on your website which converts the existing shifter on the Brompton and the recommended cassette (using the first 5 cogs only, 11-21 cogs). This is a far neater solution than buying a third party shifter. I was also puzzled why you didn’t mention replacing the chain as you mention it as a necessary part of the conversion. In the end suspected that using the existing one was going to work. And so it did. Although indexing the gears was far harder than the videos demonstrated, even referring to the one put out by the guys who sell the kit at Brommie+. In the end after some hours and frustration of tinkering it started to come together. Just one tip I would offer after all my struggles. When routing the shifter cable through the end clamp and that darn pesky final hole, it is far easier i found to tun the bike upside down, resting it on it handlebars and seat. This gives you a much clearer view of the clamp and final routing hole for seating the cable correctly. It’s so easy to think that the cable is seated correctly when not having a clear, unrestricted view, when in fact it is only half clamped and just ‘pinched’ in place. The problem then arises when after a little bit of tension, the cable starts to move due to not being properly clamped. Hope this helps? Kevin
Great Video Hannah been wondering when this would come out after your last post mentioned it. Really great idea. I had hoped to convert my T line to 12 speed but given this video think I’ll go XT 5 speed awesome.
So funny that I should come across this video - after having just returned from paying for my 4 speed T line! I said to the shop owner (a friend) that I would go with the 4 speed rather than 12 (with that heavy antique hub), as I could easily see the massive spacing between the gears would allow more to be fitted - my 11 and 12 speed bikes are a much closer fit! Really helps seeing what brand(s) fit direct too; especially as it means I already have tools. Thank fudge that Brompton did not use a bespoke design! And of course (and another reason why I didn't want the hub gears), as you have done, the selector can go on the correct side! 😅 I may at a later date (as a commenter has said) fit a twin chainring crank, but given the money I just paid for this beautiful bike, with parts like carbon cranks, I probably won't. 😉 Loving the vids and the out-takes at the ends. Keep up the good work. Regards, darth.
Hi, I am planning to make such modification. I would like to know if the original tensioner guilding can do the job moving freely in/out between 11-21t sporkets. And if need adding the chain length?
Thanks so much Hannah - for developing this mod and for explaining it so well. I’m assuming it works for the Ti4 too. Love mine to bits it’s just occasionally when I’m out of town I’d like a lower geared option without going down the 12 speed route…😀😀

With 2023 P-Line 21T sprocket works. With 2024 Version the jockey wheel touches the 21T sprocket. But there is some play in the monuting of the derailleur. So we put some plastic approximately 1 mm thick under the back mount to bring the derailleur a little bit down. In case it doesn't help enough, there is an extension by H&H but I have no experience with this. My 13T sprocket startet jumping after 2700km (heavy driver, wax). For me Brommie+ conversion for the brompton shifter is working.
Hi Hannah, great video and very useful. I’m in the process of buying a Brompton P line and haven’t decided yet whether to go for the 12 or 4 speed. I wonder if this upgrade can be done to the cassette on the 12 speed? giving overall 15 gears? I’d really appreciate your comments. Thanks Kevin
Brilliant video as always, this could be handy for me, making the hills easier, but I'd quite to stop spinning out on gentle hills with my CHPT3, need to think about that though👍
Thanks for watching! Tricky as if you want to stop spinning out then you might want a larger front chain ring, but that would counter act the larger sprocket…. 12 speed?
@@brilliantbikes it's a bit annoying that by the time I could get my hands on the CHPT3 it had become a very closely geared 4 speed, from 6, so it's spins out on the slightest decline. Although I didn't really want 12 gears, as I'd expect a few more issues with them and I'd have to see your review first. Any idea when you will get your hands on one? Hi Hannah, great video. I just bought all the necessary for the upgrade. As I have a 54T chainring, can I ask you how many links do I need for the chain? 104 or is it better 106?
Hi, I would really like to do this. I have a couple of questions though: did you consider going larger than a 21 tooth (e.g.24 tooth) Also is it necessary to change the existing Brompton sprockets because they are thicker than those from an 11-speed? Thanks, your tutorials are the business!
Hi, i just saw this viedo. This is exactly what i want to do. Is this ok on 2024 12 speed line? 2 questions, 1, the original tensioner jockey wheel can move freely between the 11-21T? Any change on the chain length?
Thanks for the question and for watching. We used the same chain, although an 11 speed might be smoother. The SRAM X01, or XX1 which be lighter, but more expensive at £145 or £170.... You could use the shifter on the bike and adjust the indexing to use either the larger or smaller 4 sprockets, but it will not shift across 5 sprockets. Thanks for watching!!!
You can fit 7 only on the stock hub if you have a cassette with a unibody design. These types of cassettes are not cheap either. Some aftermarket rear hubs will allow 7 cogs, but it will be significantly more work.

Hello, thank you for making this video. I need some advice. I followed your video today and upgraded my T line to 5 speed. However, I think I made a mistake during the process but this mistake didn't effect anything (at lease I didn't notice.) I used the first 5 sprockets of the Shimano Deore M5100 Cassette. However, Amazon sent me a 10 speed Sram GX10 trigger shifter instead of GX11 I ordered. I then ordered from another vendor the correct Gx11 shifter. However, during installation, I accidentally used the GX10 shifter instead of GX11 (they kinda look the same from the outside and box...) From what I read online, GX10 use Exact-Actuation and GX11 use X-Actuation. I kept the same chain and the original 50T chainring. After adjusting the limit screws, the shifting feels find and I don't see any issue with it. I rode 10 miles today and shifting was smooth. My question is that should I swap out the shifter to GX11 or just keep the GX10 since it's shifting fine? Thanks! Oh...I subscribed to your channel today!

Brilliant bikes does sell a left hand shifter for a 5 speed conversion. This is made by Brommie+ (Brommieplus). I’ve bought this shifter it works very well, no problem. I’m not sure why Brilliant bikes don’t promote that as a conversion as it very elegantly take the 12 speed P line up to 15 gears. (5 external and 3 internal). Mine works very well and you retain the original shifter, no need to buy a Sram shifter or any other third party component. You still need to purchase the 5 cogs as mentioned in this video. The Brommie+ shifter kit costs about £55. It only took me about 45 minutes to do the conversion. The time consuming bit was indexing the gears later for smooth shifting but the end result is a joy. 15 Gears!! Bring on those hills…………..
Good idea this, but, but why not just change the chainring from that leg-breaking 52 tooth one. If you ride in hilly areas try the 44t chainring. I'm stuck with the 6-speed and now down to 40t costs £20 (stronglight). Old legs are here now.
Doing that you lose the higher gear because you shift everything down. If you a bit of a speed demon then that can be annoying. Saying that changing to 44t is suiting me fine.
The new 4 speed (which here we change to 5) Brompton setup actually uses a different (known as advanced or MK6) rear triangle to the 1 / 2 / 3 and 6 speed Brompton You could change to a 5 speed rear wheel (internal hub gear) Changing to 4 or 5 speed would mean replacing the rear triangle (which is currently only available as a titanium option other than on the Brompton electric)
@@brilliantbikes Thank you very much! A 5 speed hub sounds interesting if the gears are better useable than in the 6 speed. I do not need the 1st and the 6th.
Disappointed! I thought you were going to install a 5 speed hub! You sell Brompton 5 speed hubs, would love to see you swap that onto a standard 3 speed hub Brompton. It’s a mod I could see myself doing.

I like the idea of keeping the original shifter. Would I need to change the chain each time I used the top or bottom four gears? Cheers 👍
Thanks for watching. We used the same chain as the chain tensioner has a lot of tie in it, so found it fine
@@brilliantbikesthank you so much for the reply. Cheers 👍
Are the spacers coming with the 11 speed Shimano cassette or did you add them ? thanks
Thanks for watching, they come with that cassette
Why didn't you just go with a 11,13,17,21 to get the larger ration without so much change to the bike, would the cogs hit the rear triangle?
Because the teeth are all ramped to help change, also we did not want a bite jump between the sprockets.
Thanks for watching!
@@brilliantbikesalso do you think that brompton will do a rear triangle upgrade kit for those who want to keep their current bike?
The jockey wheel will hit the sprocket, need to change to smaller jockey wheel (8t)
@@AnyTutorialsI currently have a 2 speed with a 12 tooth and a 19 tooth sprocket to get a wider ratio. I am within 5% of a p line gearing spread. And have made quite a few light weighting improvements.
The most elegant upgrade you can give your Brompton is to make it a single-speed.
The simplicity! Thanks for watching!!
Single speed bikes are obsolete
Hi, what about installing a double chainring?
Thanks for watching! We have never really had much luck with a double chain ring and the bike folding.
@@brilliantbikes Thanks for your answer. I've also asked 2Bikes4Adventure and they are preparing a 1000 km review. :O
love it.
Thanks for watching!
np - love watching your videos.@@brilliantbikes
I take it that a Sram sprocket set won't fit the hub?
Yeah, it’s like that one guy commented. She never gave an overall review of the difference between a five speed and the four speed on hills. I mean the difference to negligible my opinion make a real difference go to 21 speed.
I did add a bit of a summary, I was surprised at how much difference it made up the hills! Please rewatch the end 😀
Thanks for watching!
Sorry I forgot we did the ride video first!
@@brilliantbikes oh yeah, that’s right you did comment on the effort value on pedaling at the end. I jumped the gun too quick.😉 But the better question is don’t you also have a 12 speed as well so what’s the point of the six speed then I guess 🤷♂️
Does this mean you can now make the new 12-speed Brompton into a 15-speed? Asking for a friend 😉
Thanks for watching!
We are working on a solution for the shifter, as it needs to be left hand to keep the hub gears on the right
Brilliant bikes does sell a left hand shifter for a 5 speed conversion.
Thanks both for watching! Yes we did not want to loose the faster, smaller gearing, so really just wanted to add one larger sprocket
I have a Brompton with 6 gears from 2012. Is there a way to convert it to a 4 or 5 speed?
The new 4 speed (which here we change to 5) Brompton setup actually uses a different (known as advanced or MK6) rear triangle to the 1 / 2 / 3 and 6 speed Brompton
You could change to a 5 speed rear wheel (internal hub gear)
Changing to 4 or 5 speed would mean replacing the rear triangle (which is currently only available as a titanium option other than on the Brompton electric)
@@brilliantbikes Thank you very much! A 5 speed hub sounds interesting if the gears are better useable than in the 6 speed. I do not need the 1st and the 6th.
Thankfully, I have a 6-speed C Line. This upgrade looks far to difficult for me.
We also have and love our 6 speeds.
Thanks for watching!!
Disappointed! I thought you were going to install a 5 speed hub! You sell Brompton 5 speed hubs, would love to see you swap that onto a standard 3 speed hub Brompton. It’s a mod I could see myself doing.
Many thanks for the suggestion! Added to the list! I actually really want to ride one!
Almost dropped the F bomb 😅
LOL I was a little cross with myself for messing up some words, again... Thanks for watching!
Auto subscribers 😅 funny ... I hope can buy this brompton .. i used camp hazy .. prudly product frome my country 😅 ..

Who cares about a couple grams! Stop this nonsense fixation on weight!
LOL, we understand, but if we don't include it we get asked.
People like me with osteoporosis care about weight. The weight of the bike is the combined weight of all the parts of the bike, so a 100g here and there adds up.
You can choose Shimano 11-34T cassette, then you will have 25T.
Ultegra R8170 ok?
