People can work very hard at a low paying job, even two or three such jobs, and still be in poverty. One reason for low pay is the attitude that such jobs lack skills. So called no skills job in reality require skills such as physical strength, patience and compassion, loyalty, selflessness, focus, speed, etc. For example, flipping burgers is seen as unskilled. That's ridiculous! Try it, it is difficult and requires many of the skills I just listed. With all that, poor people live under the heavy burden of greed, selfishness and hoarding at the top. The cruel attitudes of the wealthy goes hand in hand with poverty. The belief that some people are elite while others are less than permeates our culture. Excellent video.

About the parenting help? Nah - it isn't just European countries who do that. It's part of life from Australasia, to many African countries. One of the most though-provoking incidents during Covid was a remote village in the *arse-end of Africa raised money to send to the Americans. After it was valued in American dollars it came to $89. Of course I wouldn't surprise me at all to find this is an apocryphal story, but just the idea that people who still live in round-houses - as did we all once - can feel sorry for those who live in mansions, drive cars, and spend their entire youth working ridiculous hours a week to buy bigger cars & better mansions.
*Uh, in the hybrid Australian, South African, English & Melanesian that govern the way I speak, this is not what you guys call a "cuss" word. It's just a phrase meaning 'the back of beyond'. So not being intentionally crude.

We also have family payment in Australia plus a school allowance so people can purchase the things their child needs for the start of the school year.

@@MsDesiree39 Government is the symptom but the American people are the real problem, after all, if there was enough broad support for real change among Americans, it wouldn't take long for that pressure to build into policy changes, but the problem is with the US, politics and the American people are too polarised, which is allows the system to get them fighting among themselves.
Personally, I think things will continue to get worse in the US unless something radical changes.

I hope the US one day understands that a country has the responsibility for its citizens and for them to be able to live a life and not just working their a**es off to somehow survive.

American politicians in the 50s and 60s did not always agree on how to solve problems, but at least they agreed on the nature of reality. The same cannot be said today, with "alternative facts" and culture war distractions from the political right. You don't need to fix problems if you deny their existence. Much of Congress has gone batshit crazy over the past few years and decades. I think that's also why America can't fix the problem right now: its government is dysfunctional. You have most Democrats on the one hand wanting to do at least *something*, but the entire Republican party's goal is obstructionism. "Whatever the Liberals want, we're against it."
It's exceptionally mean-spirited, which makes fulfilling human needs with human solutions impossible.

It's about "Free Market" and "Evil socialism". American feel generous when they donate to charity while Europe and a lot countries use part of the taxes for solidarity and poverty prevention. It's not perfect but it help preventing many disastrous situation. Though, unfortunately, not all. Then, even with that solidarity system, some of us still do donate to charity.
"Poverty cost in the US" would cost much less with basic social system. Like it cost less to prevent fire than to fight it and deal with the aftermath.
But behind poverty, all over the world, there is greed. Not systematically but greed is largely responsible. The real differences stem from the "Free market" illusion that allows companies to have stronger lobbies (basically corrupting authorities at every level). Poverty let companies generate immense wealth exceeding tens of time the cost of poverty and their taxes.

We have a good system here in Finland, If you are able to use it. Meaning that you are fysically and mantally fit to take care of yourself. But if you have mental or drag/alcohol related problems, and no one to take care of you, then your in trouble. But I think that would be prob allmost everywhere. No one suffers hunger or homelesnes here if they dont choose that way of living (mental/ drug or something else, issues).

What the USA needs is 1 tax for all income in the entire country 30% which must be distributed to Schools, Hospitals, Health Insurance, etc. Pension payment by employers which must be locked without the interference of politicians by law.

I feel you have to bring in workers unions for all occupations to make sure people get a wage that works with the costs and inflation in the country. The minimum wage is not a minimum wage it is only pocket money and doesn’t pay the value of that worker. Then you have this outrageous tipping culture making everyone who is also struggling to pay the wage that people should be getting from their employer. It’s outrageous.
